Scarifier for large garden

Scarifier for large garden

Hello I’m looking for a robust scarifier to work a large garden that belongs to a 1940’s house. I think it’s about 90m long and 100m wide. There is quite some mossy patches and having hired one last year that cost nearly £200 all told, I think it may be worth buying one to be able to do this twice a season. Now for my question. Does the Hyundai HYSC210 you reviewed (very helpful indeed, thank-you!) cover a garden of my size or do I need something more since I think the Hyundai is for up to medium sized gardens and mine is probably on the larger side? I’m keen not to spend too much money but at the same time no point getting kit that isn’t right for the job so whats good value robust kit for a garden of this side? (The other comparable scarifier that caught my attention because of some positive reviews is the Stiga SVP 40 G but again I have a question on whether it can handle a garden my size). Really appreciate any feedback on this! Thanks very much!

Both the Hyundai HYSC210 and the Stiga SVP 40 G would be suitable for your garden, though not perfect for such a large area. While their 40cm width is the standard for larger domestic scarifiers, it's worth noting that covering your 9000m² lawn will take considerable time compared to professional-grade equipment with wider cutting paths. I recently did my 450m2 lawn and it pretty much the whole day to scarify and collect the debris.

The real challenge, however, isn't the working width but the collection of debris. The collection bags on virtually all domestic scarifiers (including these models) fill extremely quickly and require constant emptying - often within seconds when tackling moss-heavy areas.

For efficient maintenance of your large lawn, I'd recommend:

Using the scarifier without the collection bag
Raking up the debris afterward with a garden rake or lawn sweeper
Consider investing in a separate lawn sweeper or garden vacuum for collection
Breaking the job into sections over multiple days

Both models are robust enough for your needs, and while not ideal for such a large area, they are certainly doable with some patience and planning - particularly since you're only tackling this twice per season.

Best regards,
Mark

Mark thanks very much for your quick reply on my scarifier question - may I ask if you rate the Hyundai over what looks like the newer Stiga? (The Hyundai looks to be less expensive and also has the aerator option which is making me favour it. Do you agree or am I missing anything on the Stiga or even something better than both to consider)?Completely agree on the debris, we filled a number of huge builder bags and did a lot of raking! Definitely a job over a few days, a proper workout!thanks again!
