Homemade Organic Weed Killer

Homemade Organic Weed Killer

In order to keep those nasty, industrial chemicals found in the majority of commercial weed killers out of your garden and to save you a little bit of money, you can try making your own weed killer at home. There are many different ways this can be done, but the most effective weed killer, that only takes 3 simple ingredients, and is super effective if used properly is detailed below. All you need to do is mix the 3 ingredients together and spray!

Organic Weed KillerRecipe For Homemade Organic Weed Killer

  1. 4 cups white vinegar (1 litre)
  2. 1⁄4 cup salt
  3. 2 table spoons of washing up liquid (dish detergent)

White vinegar is ultra acidic so you can just go for the cheapest one in the store (usually the pH level about 2 to 4). You can look for ones that are more acidic, like horticultural vinegar, as they are likely to work faster but they may be more expensive, this is really up to you but either way the weeds will still die.

Also it doesn’t really matter what kind of salt or washing up liquid you decide to use. Again it is perfectly fine to use the cheapest ingredients for this mixture, after all you are just going to spray them on your weeds.

Areas On And Around Your Lawn

Take care not to walk on the area you have sprayed with the home made weed killer, as if you then walk on your lawn the grass will also die. Also if you are spraying the weed killer close to grass edges that you want to keep, spray slowly and accurately as you do not want to kill the grass.

If you have weeds in your grass, in these areas (unless you plan on laying more grass seed or are spraying on already bare patches) then you want to leave out the salt from your mixture. Salt isn’t good for your soil and is likely to stick around after the weeds have died, this makes it very difficult for the grass to grow so it should be avoided.

Using either a spray bottle or a proper weed killer sprayer, add the 3 ingredients (white vinegar, washing up liquid and sold), and give it a little mix  – you don’t want to overdo the mixing as the washing up liquid will foam up quite heavily. With the concoction ready to go just start spraying the weeds, try to be as precise as possible to limit spray falling on the grass.

You will see results within a few hours.

Here you have no need to worry about soil so you can add the ¼ cup of salt to the mixture. First add the vinegar to the bottle and then the salt, make sure you have the lid closed tight as you need to give it a good shake in order for the salt to completely dissolve. After a thorough shake add the 2 table spoons of washing up liquid to the mixture and give it a little mix.

Again once when the mixture is ready you can begin spraying it over the weeds, again being careful not to spray your grass or plants. As mentioned above take care not to walk over any areas that have just been sprayed and then over your lawn, otherwise you will kill your grass.

In both cases just wait a few hours before checking the weeds, once you go back they should be completely shrivelled up. Just make sure you don’t over do the spraying as too much weed killer could destroy organisms within the soil.

I have never heard about this but I’m glad I came across it because I’m looking for some good, gentler options for killing weeds. When I first read the title I thought it would be more complicated than this also. Does it matter if the dishwashing liquid is sulfate free or should it be the kind that uses sulfates?

  2. Thank you for this easy to use weed killer. I have some weeds growing in areas that they should not be. I have never thought about using vinegar and salt, but am surely going to give this a try. Does it matter what kind of vinegar I use? Thanks again in advance.

    1. Nah Nathan, the type of vinegar doesn’t matter, as i said the more acidic the quicker the process will be but other than that there isn’t a difference, so in the end you’ll still get dead weeds ;-)
