If you are trying to decide between the Mammotion LUBA Mini 2 AWD 1500 and the LUBA Mini 2 AWD 1000, the choice is not really about the mower chassis. It is about navigation.

That is the key thing to understand.

These two robotic lawn mowers are incredibly similar in the way they cut, the hardware they use underneath, the app experience, the battery, and the overall design. The real difference is how they know where they are and how they move around your lawn.

The 1000 model uses Tri-Vision camera guidance with NetRTK. The 1500 model uses LiDAR and dual camera guidance, without relying on NetRTK for navigation.

So which one should you buy?

For me, it comes down to your lawn layout, your signal conditions, and how much area you need to cover. Once you understand those three things, the right choice becomes much clearer.

The main difference: LiDAR vs NetRTK

The LUBA Mini 2 AWD 1000 is guided by a tri-camera system supported by NetRTK. The LUBA Mini 2 AWD 1500 switches to 360 degree LiDAR combined with a dual camera.

That makes the 1500 the more independent mower of the two.

LiDAR works by scanning the surroundings and building a 3D understanding of the area around the mower. On this model, the LiDAR has a quoted range of around 60 metres. In practical terms, that means the mower can use physical features in your garden to work out its position rather than depending on an RTK correction signal.

That matters a lot if your lawn has:

  • Heavy tree cover
  • High walls
  • Narrow side returns
  • Areas with weak Wi-Fi or 4G
  • GPS-dark spots near buildings or overhangs

If your garden is open, with clear sky and reliable signal, the 1000 model makes a lot of sense. If your garden is more complex, the 1500 model is the stronger option.

Physical differences between the LUBA Mini 2 AWD 1500 and 1000

Physically, these two machines are almost identical.

The biggest visible difference is the module on top. The LiDAR version is slightly taller because of the sensor housing. The height difference is only 8mm, but it could matter if you have built a very tight garage or need the mower to pass under something with limited clearance.

In width, they are effectively the same. I measured both at around 460mm. So if you are worried about narrow passages, gates, or gaps between borders, there is no practical difference there.

What is the same on both models

A lot, actually.

If you already like the LUBA Mini 2 AWD platform, both of these mowers give you the same core strengths:

  • Four-wheel drive
  • 20mm to 65mm cutting height
  • Main cutting disc plus side edge-cutting disc
  • 6.1Ah battery
  • Same motor power
  • 80% slope handling
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 4G connectivity
  • Three years of included 4G service
  • No boundary wire installation

So from a mowing and ownership point of view, you are not choosing between a good mower and a bad mower. You are choosing between two versions of the same very capable mower with different navigation systems.

Why I like the LUBA Mini 2 AWD platform so much

There are two features that make this mower stand out for me.

The first is the four-wheel drive. Not everyone needs it, but when you do need it, it makes a huge difference. Gravel crossings, rough patches, bumpy transitions, and awkward slopes are exactly where it earns its keep.

The second is the side cutting disc.

That side disc is what allows the mower to get right out toward the edge and massively reduce trimming. For me, that is one of the biggest real-world benefits of this machine. If you can map the mower correctly and physically get the disc close enough to the boundary, you can often eliminate edge trimming altogether.

Underneath, both models are essentially the same. You get:

  • A 20cm main cutting disc
  • A 12cm side cutting disc
  • Good blade protection under the deck
  • Suspension and a well-thought-out underside design

I particularly like the way the blade area is protected. It helps stop grass wrapping around the screws as badly as it does on some other robotic mowers.

The one downside of the edge-cutting disc

The side disc is excellent, but it does have one limitation.

It is fixed at around 50mm cutting height. You cannot adjust it independently.

So if your main lawn is being cut much lower, say 20mm to 35mm, the edge can end up slightly taller. In practice, I do not find it very noticeable because it still keeps the edge under control. But I would love to see a future version where that side disc could be adjusted down to match the main deck height.

That is still the main weakness for me, and it applies to both models.

Which gardens suit the 1500 LiDAR model best?

This is where the LUBA Mini 2 AWD 1500 really starts to justify itself.

If your garden has lots of visual structure and lots of obstacles, LiDAR tends to shine. Trees, borders, walls, paths, buildings, and planting all give the mower useful reference points.

That makes the 1500 a strong choice for:

  • Back gardens with dense tree canopies
  • Lawns boxed in by fences or walls
  • Gardens with awkward shapes and several navigation channels
  • Properties where RTK signal reliability is questionable
  • People who simply do not want to think about signal-based navigation

It is also a better fit if your lawn area goes beyond 1,000 square metres but stays within 1,500 square metres. The 1000 model is limited to 1,000 square metres, while the 1500 model gives you that extra capacity without forcing you into a larger and more expensive full-size LUBA 3 AWD.

Which gardens suit the 1000 NetRTK model best?

The 1000 still makes perfect sense in the right garden.

If your lawn is relatively open, has good sky view, and you do not expect RTK-related issues, the 1000 can be an excellent choice. It gives you the same core chassis, the same cut quality, the same four-wheel drive, and the same edge-cutting benefit.

So if your lawn is:

  • Under 1,000 square metres
  • Open to the sky
  • Not heavily obstructed by trees or buildings
  • Well suited to NetRTK guidance

Then the 1000 remains a very strong option.

LiDAR still needs reference points

One important point that is worth mentioning is that LiDAR is not magic.

LiDAR works best where there are enough surrounding features for it to understand the environment. In a very open space with very few landmarks, LiDAR-only systems can struggle because there is not much to reference.

That is why the dual camera on the 1500 matters. It gives the mower another layer of awareness and helps it deal with situations where one method on its own would be weaker.

That combination makes a lot of sense. You get the benefits of LiDAR in complex areas, but you still have the camera there as a backup.

Zone limits and coverage differences

There are a few practical specification differences beyond navigation.

  • LUBA Mini 2 AWD 1000: up to 10 zones
  • LUBA Mini 2 AWD 1500: up to 20 zones

So if your lawn is split into lots of separate areas, the 1500 becomes more attractive again.

There is also a quoted efficiency difference per charge:

  • 1000 model: about 430 square metres per charge
  • 1500 model: about 500 square metres per charge

Both use the same 6.1Ah battery and the same motor power, so the most likely explanation is that the LiDAR model is simply taking a slightly more efficient route and wasting less movement.

The 1500 is also a little heavier because of the LiDAR hardware. It comes in at roughly 17kg versus about 15kg for the 1000.

Setup and mapping the 1500

Setup is one of the areas where this mower really scores well.

You are not laying boundary wire. You are not mounting a physical RTK antenna. You are basically charging the mower, connecting it in the app, updating the firmware, and mapping the lawn.

That whole process is quick and straightforward.

One thing I always recommend with robotic mowers is to keep an eye on firmware. These machines improve quickly through updates, but I still prefer to be cautious. When a new update comes out, it is worth waiting a little while and checking user feedback before installing it, especially if your mower is already working well.

For mapping, the main thing to remember with the LUBA Mini 2 AWD is this:

  • Map counterclockwise

Because the side cutting disc sticks out beyond the wheels, you need to think about where that disc is in relation to your lawn edge. If you want the mower to cut right up to the edge without hitting stones or borders, your mapping line matters.

The app also gives you a very handy reverse function while mapping. If you drift too far out or make a mistake, you can reverse along the line you just created and remove that section without starting all over again.

A useful difference I noticed while mapping

During setup, I noticed something interesting with the 1500 LiDAR model.

On the 1000 model, there seemed to be more of a limit between the charging station and the first zone, and also a more obvious distance limit between zones. On the 1500, I did not run into the same restriction during mapping.

Whether that is down to LiDAR itself or newer app behaviour, it is still a practical advantage if your lawn layout is more spread out.

How I solved a ramp and drop detection issue

LiDAR brings big advantages, but it also means the mower is more aware of drops, edges, and transitions.

In my case, after mapping, the mower stopped at a ramp section on the way back to the charging station because it was treating that change in level as a hazard.

That sounds annoying at first, but it is actually good behaviour. It means the mower is taking edge detection seriously.

The fix was simple in the app.

I created an obstacle-free zone over the ramp section. That tells the mower to ignore what it would normally interpret as an obstacle or dangerous feature in that very specific spot and continue through.

This feature is extremely useful for more than just ramps. If you have overhanging plants along a narrow path, for example, you can use obstacle-free zones to stop the mower from constantly refusing to enter that channel.

There is one obvious warning, though. If you tell the mower not to treat that area as an obstacle zone, it will not avoid objects placed there in the usual way. So only use this where you are confident the route is safe.

Navigation performance: LiDAR was slightly more accurate

Once mapped, the 1500 performed very well on my lawn.

It tracked the path very neatly, and compared with the 1000 model, I found it slightly more precise in the centre of narrow channels. The NetRTK version did well too, but it tended to wander a little more from side to side. The LiDAR model looked more locked in.

That was especially obvious on the paved path between lawn areas.

It kept a cleaner line, navigated confidently, and handled transitions very smoothly.

It also crossed gravel and stones well, which is exactly where the AWD layout comes into its own. That is one of the areas where a lighter mower with a front caster wheel can struggle. If your lawns are separated by gravel drives or uneven crossings, this four-wheel-drive platform is much better suited.

Cutting performance and edge cutting

On the lawn itself, the 1500 did what I expected from the LUBA Mini 2 AWD range. It cut cleanly, tracked the border well, and used the side cutting disc exactly as intended.

On the edges, the disc overlapped the lawn boundary nicely without running into the stones. That is the sweet spot. You want the blade close enough to eliminate trimming, but not so close that you are repeatedly striking hard surfaces.

Where I had mapped the mower half on the lawn and half on the adjacent path, it honoured that line properly and cut right across the threshold. That is the kind of detail that makes a difference in everyday use. It means less strimming, less cleanup, and a neater finish overall.

Like every robotic mower I have tested, it could still miss a tiny bit in very tight corners. That is not unusual. If you refuse to let the mower overlap a hard edge, there are some corners where no robot is going to be absolutely perfect. But overall the finish was excellent.

It handled longer grass better than many robots do

Robotic mowers are really designed to maintain a lawn little and often, not hack back long growth in one go.

Even so, the 1500 coped very well when I gave it more grass than a robot mower ideally should be asked to cut. It kept going and produced a very respectable result.

For proper robotic mowing, I would still recommend using it as intended and only taking small amounts off regularly. But it was reassuring to see that it had enough ability in reserve when the lawn was not in ideal condition.

Obstacle avoidance test results

I also tested the obstacle avoidance on the LiDAR version, and the results were very good.

Using the standard avoidance setting, the mower detected and avoided larger objects exactly as expected. It also behaved sensibly by leaving the strip immediately around the obstacle, then returning later to deal with the surrounding grass rather than simply abandoning the area.

I then tried smaller and trickier objects.

One of the more impressive results was a flat glove placed on the grass. That sort of low-profile object often gets run over by robotic mowers, but this one detected it and avoided it.

I also tested a last-second obstacle placed right in front of the mower. Even then, it reacted quickly enough to avoid it, with only very slight contact in one attempt. Importantly, that was not the bumper doing the work after a proper collision. The mower was still recognising and avoiding the object using its sensors.

So in practice, the obstacle avoidance on the 1500 was at least as good as the 1000, and in day-to-day use I would call it very reassuring.

Night mowing and independence from signal

Another advantage of the LiDAR-equipped 1500 is that it should be particularly well suited to mowing in low light or at night.

LiDAR is not relying on daylight in the same way as a vision-only system. You still have the camera and the front light, but the real strength is that the navigation is not hanging on RTK signal quality or good lighting conditions alone.

If you like to schedule mowing outside busy daytime hours, that is another point in the 1500’s favour.

Connectivity and running costs

Both models include:

  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • 4G connectivity

You also get three years of included 4G service on both.

That matters even on the LiDAR model. Although it does not need NetRTK for navigation, it still benefits from 4G for remote control, status monitoring, and app access when you are away from home.

On the 1000 model, NetRTK access is included for life. After the three-year included 4G period ends, if you still want that remote connectivity over mobile data, you would need to renew it. The renewal pricing is said to be reasonable, but the important point is that there is no early ownership headache because those first three years are already covered.

What about the YUKA Mini and the full-size LUBA 3 AWD?

This is where the wider Mammotion range comes into play.

Before this LiDAR-equipped LUBA Mini 2 AWD 1500 existed, there was a bit of a gap in the lineup. If someone needed LiDAR because of signal problems or dense tree cover, but also needed four-wheel drive, there was not an ideal option in the mini range.

The YUKA Mini gave you LiDAR, but not AWD.

So if you have a flatter lawn and want to save some money, the YUKA range is still worth a look. But if you specifically want LiDAR plus AWD, this 1500 model fills that gap very nicely.

If your lawn is larger still and you want everything together, then the LUBA 3 AWD sits above this model. That machine combines LiDAR, camera guidance, and NetRTK, but it starts at a much larger capacity and higher price point. For a lawn around 1,000 to 1,500 square metres, the Mini 2 AWD 1500 makes much more sense.

  • The side cutting disc is fixed at 50mm and cannot be adjusted to match the main cut height

That is honestly the only real drawback that stood out to me at this stage.

So which one should you buy?

If I had to simplify it right down, this is how I would choose.

Buy the LUBA Mini 2 AWD 1000 if:

  • Your lawn is under 1,000 square metres
  • Your garden has open sky and good signal conditions
  • You want the LUBA Mini AWD platform without paying for LiDAR

Buy the LUBA Mini 2 AWD 1500 if:

  • Your lawn is up to 1,500 square metres
  • You have heavy tree cover or difficult GPS areas
  • You want more independence from signal-based navigation
  • You have more zones or more complex channels
  • You want the strongest mini AWD option for awkward gardens

For complex gardens, the LUBA Mini 2 AWD 1500 LiDAR is the one I would lean toward. It keeps everything I already like about the LUBA Mini 2 AWD and adds a navigation system that makes much more sense for lawns where RTK or GPS conditions are less than ideal.

And that, really, is the whole story.

The 1500 is not just a 1000 with a bit more capacity. It is the answer to a specific problem. If your lawn has trees, walls, awkward channels, or unreliable signal conditions, this is the version that makes the most sense.
