Introduction

LUBA mini AWD Review

Hello there! I’m Mark and today I’m taking a detailed look at the LUBA Mini AWD from Mammotion. This robotic lawn mower promises to revolutionise your lawn care routine with its advanced technology and smart features.

After extensively testing Mammotion’s larger robotic mowers—the large LUBA 2 AWD and YUKA—as well as the YUKA Mini, I was eager to explore how the compact LUBA Mini AWD would perform. This newest addition to Mammotion’s family brings 4 Wheel Drive capabilities to smaller lawns, potentially filling an important niche in the market. As someone who has hands-on experience with the entire range, I’m particularly interested in how this model compares to its siblings, especially the YUKA Mini which serves as its direct 2 Wheel Drive counterpart. Does the added traction of all-wheel drive and remote height management via the app justify the price difference for average gardens? In this comprehensive review, I’ll walk you through the setup process, performance capabilities, and how it stacks up against the other models I’ve tested to help you determine if the LUBA Mini AWD is the right choice for you and your lawn.

In this comprehensive review, I’ll cover:

  • What’s included in the box
  • Setup and installation
  • Full specifications
  • Real-world testing on both my front and rear lawns
  • Performance analysis
  • Conclusion with pros and cons

Unboxing the LUBA Mini AWD

LUBA mini AWD Unboxing

Let’s start by exploring what you get when you purchase the LUBA Mini AWD. Upon opening the box, you’ll find:

  • The LUBA Mini AWD mower itself (I’m reviewing the 1500 model, but there’s also an 800 model with different specifications)
  • A separate camera module that needs to be attached to the mower
  • Charging station with slide-on visor
  • RTK satellite navigation station
  • Wall bracket for mounting the RTK station (can be extended or compact)
  • Ground spike option for the RTK station
  • Additional wall brackets
  • Cleaning brush for maintaining the mower deck
  • Spare security key
  • Spare blade pack (six blades)
  • Clips and ground screws with Allen key for securing the charging station
  • Two power supplies (one for the charging station, one for the RTK station)
  • Long cable for the RTK station
  • Hex screwdriver for assembly
  • User guide and quick start guide
  • RTK antenna

While it might look like many components, the setup process is remarkably straightforward, which we’ll cover shortly.

Optional Extras

Beyond the standard package, Mammotion offers several valuable optional extras:

Solar Panel

This brilliant addition allows you to position your RTK station anywhere with good sun exposure. It includes a battery pack that charges during the day, eliminating the need for a power outlet near your RTK station. This gives tremendous flexibility for optimal satellite reception.

Garage Roof

For those wanting to protect their LUBA Mini from the elements when it’s docked at the charging station, the garage roof accessory provides shelter from rain, intense sun, and debris. This can help extend the lifespan of your mower and maintain its appearance.

Formula Car Stickers

For a touch of personality and racing flair, these Formula 1-inspired decals let you customise the appearance of your robotic mower. They’re a fun way to make your LUBA Mini stand out and show off your motorsport enthusiasm while it races around your lawn.

4G Connectivity

The LUBA Mini comes with built-in 4G capability. You get one month free with the Mini models, and the ongoing subscription costs are very reasonable. The 4G service extends the range between the mower and RTK station, though if you have good Wi-Fi coverage of your garden like I do, this will not be necessary.

Setting Up the LUBA Mini AWD

Setting Up the LUBA Mini AWD

Getting started with the LUBA Mini AWD couldn’t be simpler. While the included user guide and quick help sheet provide clear instructions for assembly and initial setup, I highly recommend watching my video review above for the most intuitive walkthrough. In my video, I demonstrate the entire process step by step—from unpacking and assembling the components to mapping your lawn and customising settings through the app. This visual guide removes any guesswork, especially for those who may be less technically inclined or new to robotic mowers. Whether you’re connecting to Wi-Fi, setting up the RTK station, or creating your first mowing zone, seeing the process in action makes the entire setup experience virtually fool proof.

Installation and Setup Steps

Setting up the LUBA Mini AWD involves several key steps:

  1. Positioning the Charging Station:

    • Find a flat area with good visibility
    • Secure it to the ground using the provided screws
    • Connect the power cable
  2. Positioning the RTK Station (if not using iNavi):

    • Place it where it has a clear view of the sky
    • Either use the wall mount or ground spike
    • Connect to power
  3. App Setup:

    • Ensure you are on the latest version of the Mammotion app, downloaded either from the IOS app store or Google play store
    • Initially connect via Bluetooth
    • Configure Wi-Fi settings
    • Update firmware of both the LUBA Mini and the RTK station (always recommended)
    • Map your lawn boundaries
  4. Zone Creation:

    • Establish different mowing zones if needed
    • Create connecting channels between zones
    • Set specific mowing heights for each zone
    • Create schedules for your mowing routine (timing, pattern, height, speed etc)

The process is intuitive and guided by the app, making it accessible even for those not technically inclined.

Lawn Layout and Initial Setup

Lawn Layout and Initial Setup

Before diving into the installation, I captured a drone shot to provide context for my lawn’s layout. I’ve divided my back lawn, with the YUKA Mini already handling one half, while reserving the other half for testing the LUBA Mini AWD. The mower would need to navigate down a path alongside the house to reach the front lawn as well.

The first step was securing the charging station on a flat surface. It’s worth noting that the charging station doesn’t necessarily need to be placed on your lawn—it can be positioned on a pathway or other location, with a channel created to connect it to the mowing zone. For convenience during testing, I placed it directly on the lawn and secured it using the provided ground screws and Allen key.

App Setup and Connectivity

App Setup and Connectivity

Setting up the LUBA Mini through the Motion app was straightforward. Since I already had the RTK station configured for my YUKA Mini, I simply needed to add the LUBA Mini to the same system. This is an important compatibility note: the RTK station used for the Mini series (LUBA Mini and YUKA Mini) is specific to these models and cannot be used with the larger LUBA 2 AWD or larger YUKA models, and vice versa. Each series requires its dedicated RTK station.

After connecting via Bluetooth, the app prompted me to connect the mower to my Wi-Fi network. It’s worth mentioning that the LUBA Mini comes with one month of 4G connectivity included. The system also automatically checked for firmware updates for both the mower and the RTK station, which I installed to ensure optimal performance.

Mapping Your Lawn

The LUBA Mini offers two mapping methods:

  1. Manual Mapping: This allows you to drive the mower around the perimeter of your desired cutting area, defining the boundaries yourself.

  2. Auto Mapping: An impressive feature where the mower autonomously navigates and defines your lawn’s boundaries using its built-in camera.

For my back lawn, I opted for manual mapping since I only wanted the LUBA Mini to cover a small part of the lawn (keeping the rest for testing other mowers). For the front lawn, I tested the auto mapping feature, which performed exceptionally well—actually achieving better precision than I could manually.

Creating Channels Between Zones

LUBA Mini AWD Creating Channels Between Zones

Since my charging station wasn’t within my defined cutting zone, I needed to create a channel connecting the two. This simple process involved using the app to drive the mower from the cutting zone back to the charging station, establishing a navigational path.

I also created another channel connecting my back lawn zone to the front lawn zone, allowing the mower to travel between the two areas. The system intuitively stored these routes for future use.

Customising Mowing Settings

The app offers extensive customisation options for your mowing schedule and preferences:

  • Cutting Height: Adjustable from very short (20mm) to longer settings (65mm)
  • Task Speed: Variable speeds for different lawn conditions
  • Cutting Path Patterns: Options include zigzag, chessboard (for a pleasing striped effect), or random
  • Perimeter Mowing: Option to have the mower trace the perimeter twice for cleaner edges
  • Obstacle Detection: Different sensitivity levels for avoiding objects
  • No-Go Zones: Ability to define areas the mower should avoid

For my test, I set the cutting height to 25mm (quite low) to clearly demonstrate the cutting performance, and selected the zigzag pattern with perimeter mowing enabled. As you can see from my video, the mower created perfect straight stripes on my lawn.

Performance Testing

Cutting Quality

Despite setting the cutting height fairly low, the LUBA Mini handled the task admirably. It managed to cut through areas with longer grass without getting bogged down, though for regular maintenance on an established lawn, you’d typically be removing much less grass with each pass.

Obstacle Avoidance

LUBA Mini AWD Obstacle Avoidance

I tested the obstacle detection system using a child’s toy and a smaller tube. In both cases, the mower detected the objects well in advance, navigated around them smoothly, and continued its mowing pattern without making contact. This was impressive considering I was using the standard setting rather than the sensitive one.

Navigation Between Zones

The LUBA Mini AWD expertly navigated from the back lawn, down my narrow pathway, and into the front lawn without any issues. It transitioned seamlessly between zones, following the channels I had created during setup.

My neighbours were absolutely gobsmacked when they witnessed the LUBA Mini autonomously navigating down my garden path and out to my front lawn—the sight of a robotic mower confidently transitioning between zones without human intervention certainly turned quite a few heads!

Night Operation

LUBA Mini AWD Night Operation

One particularly impressive feature is the powerful LED headlight that enables effective night-time operation. I tested the mower in complete darkness, and it functioned flawlessly, allowing for scheduling during night-time hours when the lawn isn’t in use.

Pros and Cons

Therefore there is nothing I can share with you at this stage.

LUBA Mini AWD vs. YUKA Mini: Which to Choose?

If you’re deciding between the LUBA Mini and YUKA Mini, consider these key differences:

  • The LUBA Mini offers four-wheel drive, making it better suited for properties with steep slopes and adverse terrain
  • The LUBA allows automatic height adjustment via the app, while the YUKA requires manual adjustment (button on top of the mower)
  • Both mowers pack impressive technology and performance for their price range

LUBA Mini AWD vs. LUBA 2 AWD: Size Considerations

LUBA Mini AWD Size Considerations

For my lawn size (approximately 600 square meters total), I actually prefer the LUBA Mini AWD over the larger LUBA 2 AWD. The Mini navigates tight corners more effectively, manoeuvres around obstacles with greater precision, and is perfectly capable of handling medium-sized lawns. While the full-sized LUBA 2 AWD boasts a wider cutting deck that allows it to cover more ground per pass—reducing total mowing time and requiring fewer trips back to the charging station—this advantage only becomes meaningful on larger properties. For lawns approaching or exceeding 1,500 square meters, the LUBA 2’s efficiency makes it the better choice, as it can comfortably handle areas up to 3,000 square meters. However, if your property is small to medium-sized or features intricate landscaping, narrow passages, or tight corners, the LUBA Mini AWD’s compact footprint and manoeuvrability make it the superior option, providing all the necessary cutting power without the extra bulk.

Conclusion

The LUBA Mini AWD represents impressive value, packing advanced technology into a compact and effective package. From the intuitive setup process to the excellent cutting performance and navigation capabilities, it delivers on its promises.

LUBA Mini AWD Conclusion

Whether you have a small to medium-sized lawn or tight spaces that larger mowers struggle with, the LUBA Mini offers a compelling solution that will save you time while maintaining a beautifully manicured and healthy lawn. The upcoming iNavi model (arriving April 2025) will eliminate the need for the RTK station, making this system even more user-friendly. If you want to see this world’s first service in action, see my video above.

After extensively testing more than 20 different robotic mowers across various brands and price points, I can confidently say the LUBA Mini AWD stands head and shoulders above the competition for my particular needs. Its perfect balance of cutting performance, navigation intelligence, slope-handling capability and compact design makes it the ideal match for my property’s specific needs. While different gardens may require different solutions, this remarkable little mower has earned its permanent place in my lawn care arsenal—delivering exceptional results with minimal oversight and maximum reliability.
