Introduction

Mountfield Princess 34 Review

The Mountfield Princess 34 is a 1400 watt electric corded lawn mower that has a 34cm cutting deck and 6 height adjustments from 25mm to 75mm. It has a very respectable solid 35 litre collection box and is supplied with a 15 metre cable. The Mountfield Princess has an ergonomic and durable design and is fitted with a rear roller for a striped lawn finish and supplied with the ability to mulch the lawn.

Summary

I’ve received so many great comments and emails from satisfied Mountfield owners, it was great to finally get my hands on a Mountfield Princess lawn mower and see for myself just how good this mower is.

I took delivery of my Mountfield Princess 34 in early March, and was eager for the weather to improve to allow me to use the mower and write a review for my readers so they can see if this is a suitable option to be considered.

In summary, if you are looking for a powerful electric corded lawn mower with a fair sized cutting blade, rear roller and mulching option then the Mountfield Princess may be the perfect option for you and your lawn. It sports a 1400 watt motor and is robust and agile. This model is good for medium or small gardens. Although not self-propelled, it is light and a pleasure to work with.

It has enough power to deal with wet or long grass and will cut with precision. It is well priced and really user-friendly. The Mountfield Princess 34 weighs a mere 13kg but has amazing power from the powerful 1400 watt motor. This make it easy to move around the garden. It is a great option for those that find mowing a lawn hard work. The Mountfield Princess 34 makes it a breeze.

The 6 cutting heights will allow you to get the perfect look for your lawn with options from 25mm to 75mm. You can have precise control throughout the year according to your requirements. It is easy to change the height settings via a single and easy to use lever mounted at the rear of the mower. It also has a respectable solid 35 litre grass collection box with a very handy vision window.  This will save you having to rush to empty it all the time (when guessing it is full) and make for faster work. Another option the Mountfield has is the ability to mulch. This is an eco-friendly option that will not only save you a bit of time but also return nutrients to the soil and enrich your lawn.

Mountfield Princess 34 Review

The Mountfield Princess 34 has a 15 metre cable which is a bit longer than average and saves a bit of hassle with extension cords for many. As a safety feature, the blade will stop spinning a few seconds after you release the switch. The rear roller adds stability and will let you create that perfect striped lawn, if you wish.

There are three different Princess size models to choose from, the Princess 34, 38 and 42. There is a handy comparison table below to show the differences between them.

Well, it can’t all be good, can it? Well in my review below you will find out about all the features and functions and the pros and cons of this popular lawn mower.

  • Grass box capacity 35 litre
  • Rear Roller for striped lawn
  • Front anti-scalping plate
  • Recommended for lawns up to 200m²
  • Easy to manoeuvre
  • Mulching feature included

Power System

Mountfield Princess 34 CuttingThe Mountfield Princess 34 is fitted with 1400 watt motor that is more than adequate for a 34cm deck size, and competes well with the competition. The same size Bosch Rotak 34R electric mower is supplied with only a 1300 watt motor, and I found the Princess 34 had no problem cutting my rather damp mid-March lawn. Just remember to set the height setting to a higher level and work your way down for really long and neglected lawns.

The motor seemed to be quiet, starting was smooth and the motor stopped within 3 seconds of me releasing the starter handle.

Overall, I was very impressed with the power and cut quality of the mower, it has all the benefits of owning an electric mower i.e. no batteries to charge, no fuel and oil to worry about to name a few.

Power Cable

This mower comes with a very respectable 15 metre power cord. Even Bosch only give you 10 metres on some of their larger mowers, so well done Mountfield for this!

The cable is of good quality and is bright yellow, so you can’t miss it.

Blades & Cutting Diameter

Mountfield Princess 34 Blade

The Mountfield Princess 34 has a 34cm good quality steel blade that is specially designed to support the mulching option. The Princess range has 3 different cutting widths (34cm, 38cm and the biggest brother the Mountfield Princess 42 with a 42cm deck) that are designed for varied sized gardens. I really liked the 34cm deck, it’s so compact making it easy to manoeuvre around the garden and small enough for easy storage and transportation.

I would say that this 34cm blade is suitable for lawns up to 200m², and naturally anything bigger would be better suited to the larger models – 38cm, or even the 42cm Princess mowers.

The steel blade can easily be sharpened using basic DIY skills or easily replaced. Blades are readily available and reasonably priced.

Grass Box Capacity

The Mountfield Princess 34 has a 35 litre solid grass collection box. This is about right for a mower of this size and compares well with that of other mower brands.

Mountfield Princess 34 Grass BoxMost grass collection boxes will come with either a flap or vision window to see when the box needs to be emptied (some mowers have nothing at all). On the range of Princess mowers, Mountfield have decided to include a vision window on their grass collection boxes. I do prefer vision windows over the flap system, as on some mowers I have tested, the flap does not always work so well where the circulation is poor.

Good circulation is crucial if the mower is going to collect most of the grass cuttings, and Mountfield have achieved this by ensuring there are adequate vents all around the collection box. I did my first cut at the end of March after a very wet period and the Mountfield Princess 34 had no issues collecting the rather damp and longer cuttings.

The only negative about the collection box on this mower is, that it does not fold flat like the cloth ones do. Yes, the cloth collection bags are more prone to damage, but they are such good space savers. I would suggest that you could dismantle the solid box each time, but that’s just not practical and believe me, this is not the easiest grass box to assemble! (if you are doing this only once than that is not an issue)

The grass collection box is easy to fix and remove (see video), and does not constantly fall off the mower whilst mowing, like some others I have tested.

Roller (Stripes)

Good news! This Mountfield Princess 34 comes with a built in integrated rear roller. Your lawn will be the envy of all your neighbours with a beautiful traditional striped lawn finish, well done Mountfield for including this. (with most mowers this is an optional extra)

The roller does seem to be in two halves clipped together, as opposed to a single moulded roller, however it feels very strong and secure.

Height Adjustment

The height adjustment on this Mountfield Princess 34 is fantastic and beats the competition hands down. There are 6 height options from 25mm to 75mm and that will be all you need to adjust the mower for the changing seasons and grass conditions.

The adjustment is just so easy and smooth to use (see my video below). The lever is mounted to the rear of the mower, but will adjust all 4 wheels simultaneously. Normally I prefer the lever to be mounted more central to the mower as they are normally easier to adjust, however the rear height adjustment on the Princess 34 works perfectly.

Practicalities

This compact but powerful Mountfield mower is so practical as it meets the requirements of so many situations out-of-the-box. The 1400 watt motor on a 34cm deck will not disappoint on all but the toughest lawns, the 6 height adjustments, the inclusion of a mulching plug, the rear roller, the ergonomic handles, 15 metre of cable and the great value make this a very practical option when choosing your next mower.

Mountfield Princess 34 Practicalities

The inclusion of a well positioned central carry handle and the ability to fold the handles will help with storage and transportation. It is a shame the handles do not also fold at the lower point as well as this would have reduced storage even more. I understand that this can add a weak point to the mower and as Mountfield pride themselves on quality may be the reason they did not include this.

The 35 litre grass box is more than adequate for the 34cm deck, and remember you always have the option of mulching the lawn, saving more time and improving the condition of your lawn.

If you want a mower that you can simply pull out of the shed or garage, get the lawn mowed quickly and efficiently, then this may well be the mower for you.

Warranty

The Mountfield Princess 34 comes with a two year manufactures warranty.

Mountfield Princess 34 Safety Features

This mower comes with a standard central starter button that must be pressed in order to start this mower. The mower also has a quick stop safety brake feature that stops the blade spinning within three seconds of the operator releasing the switch.

Mountfield Princess 34 Mulching

Mulching

The Mountfield Princess does have the ability to mulch the grass cuttings as it comes supplied with a mulch plug. This really is a nice touch from Mountfield as most electric mowers do not have a mulching ability and a rear roller.

To learn more about the benefits of a mower that has the ability to mulch the lawn, please see my article “The Benefits of Mulching Grass – Complete Guide with Pros & Cons“.

  1. Thank you Mark for your most helpful review and video package, which has persuaded me to pull the trigger on one of these Mountfield mowers. I have lived mostly in flats or maisonettes with no lawn areas to maintain, but have recently retired and moved in to a new property with 2 small/medium sized lawns. The last time I used an electric lawn mower was as a schoolboy when my parents had a gadget that came as an accessory to an electric drill! More recently, my neighbour used an electric mower on her lawn which was very noisy. So I was pleased that your video appeared to demonstrate that the Mountfield with brushless motor was comparatively a very quiet machine in operation, as I don’t wish to be a nuisance to my new and mostly elderly neighbours. As a non-gardener, I have also been enlightened about mulching! Finally, your review also mentioned the benefits of a more powerful wattage motor to handle damp grass more easily. Having moved from a relatively drier part of the country in the South East to a wetter area in the North West, this was something I had originally not taken into account when I first started looking for a suitable mower. Let’s just hope I can make some use of that mulching feature! With grateful thanks once more, and my congratulations on a well designed and informative website. Nigel

    1. Thank you Nigel for your positive feedback, I am so pleased that my video and information was helpful to you. Please keep in touch and let me know how you get on throughout the season.
      All the very best

  2. George Basnett

Hi, just purchased my second Mountfield a Princess 34 replacing my Princess 14 inch. First impressions : The motor is louder than the older model, is that because the revs are higher giving it a higher pitched tone, how do the decibels and revs compare? As another has remarked the cutting blade is not as sharp as it could be and the cuttings seemed to jam into the vent holes of the grass box, which may be partly static build up due to the less sharp blade.
Yet to try it on mulch mode which I believe does require a sharp blade so it does not bode well for the likely performance?

    1. Hi George, thanks for your feedback and first impressions. Other manufacturers such as Hyundai are also supplying blade that do not have a sharp cutting edge, I have raised it with them and they have confirmed that this is normal and will not affect the performance of the mower. You could remove the blade and put a sharper edge on. The Mountfield Princess 34 I have tested seemed to cut well, as you can see from my video. Let us know how you get on with the mulching. Kind regards

  3. hi my name is Ian can you tell me if you have tried the honda 330 electric corded lawnmower as i was thinking of purchesing one of these or the mountfield princess 34 which would you recomend thank you Ian

    1. Hi Ian, if we were talking about a petrol mower I would go for the Honda, however as we are talking about an electric mower, I would definitely recommend the Mountfield.

Some of the reasons are – greater power, mulching plug included, rear roller included, larger grass collection box, greater range and number of cutting heights, and is about £30 cheaper.

It is not to say that the Honda is not a good mower, it is just that you get lots more with the Mountfield Princess, and that is one of the main reasons it is so popular.

      Hope this helps.

    1. Hi James, I would go for the Mountfield as it has a cleaner cut and collects the grass cutting better than the Hyundai. Just bear in mind that the blade is 4cm smaller so you may want to consider the larger Mountfield Princess 38. Do you know roughly the square meterage of your lawn? This larger model is suitable for lawns up to 250m sq, about the size of a tennis court. Price of both is comparable but will just slightly if you go for the larger Mountfield 38. Let me know
      Mark

      1. Hey.
Ordered princess 34 (paid £120). Couldnt force myself to pay £40 extra for extra 4cm width. Id rather do and extra pass on the lawn :))
Thx a lot for the help. Looking forward in confidence that i got a good machine ;)
        P.S. lawn around 80sqm.

          1. Hi again.
Havent had a chat with mountfield yet. Will do a “collect” cut instead of “mulch” tomorrow, will lower the height by one (was on 4 last time) and see how it goes again first…

      2. Hi again. Used my princess for the first time today ;) Really light and easy to manoeuvre. Another plus is that the roller can be removed without damaging the unit (unclick and remove). Assembled the box in one minute or so. Dont see why ppl have problems with it.
One thing i noticed: the blade is not sharp. Is this how it should be ? My previous mowers had really shap blades.

        Thx Mark once again !

        1. Thanks for your feedback, great to hear that you are pleased with the mower. With regards to the blade, I will investigate further and come back to you. I have recently noticed this with one of the Hyundai model too.
          Kind regards
          Mark

          1. Hi again. I just called mountfield and their reply is that its the speed of the blade that cuts the grass, not the sharpness of the blade.
            So it is … normal.

          2. Hi James, I don’t get this with my Mountfield as it cuts sharply and cleanly. This is very odd, did you speak to Mountfield about this?
What height setting was it on?
            Thanks, Mark

  4. Hi Mark,
Thank you for the review, my dad has just bought himself one of these, but he’s having trouble installing the mulching plug – it only seems to fit part-way into the gap, and feels like it would need to be forced to go all the way in. It seems to be the wrong size or shape somehow. From the video yours seems to slide in effortlessly, do you think he has received the wrong part?
    Many thanks,
    Mark

    1. Hi Mark, when you insert the mulching plug try to tilt it back slightly as you are inserting it. I don’t remember it being that difficult to insert so it may well be that you have the wrong part, but this is unlikely.
Is there a part number stamped on the mulching plug? If so, you can send it to me and I will look into it.
Let me know how you get on.
      Mark

  5. Hi Mark,
Thanks for a very informative site. I have purchased a mountfield 34 electric thanks to your review. So far, I am very pleased with the mower.
In your video, you release the grips which hold the bars in order to fold the handle down. I cannot work out how this is done. Once the grips are fully wound on to support the frame, there is no manoeuvre to quick release. I would have to fully unwind the grips on both sides in order to release the frame. Where am I going wrong?
    Thanks,
    Peter.

    1. Hi Peter

Yes, you need to get this just right to enable the quick release.

Just don’t tighten completely and leave about two or three turns. Then the when you fold/tighten the lever it will tighten enough but allow for the lever to be released again.

Have a look at the video below.

      https://youtu.be/8ncfSgdhHxs?t=85

      Hope this helps.
      Mark

      1. Hi Mark,
Thanks for the quick reply. Yep, all good, as you say, just release them slightly in order for the grips to manoeuvre. It looked so quick in your video.
I’m going to make a start on your lawn tips now.
        Thanks for the advice.
        Peter.

    1. Hi Leighton,
Thanks for your message. The model I tested had the mains cable hard wired to the cable, so it would appear that Mountfield have now changed this.
I know for a similar mower that has the same system, that the cable has to be pushed hard in, and normally you would hear/feel a click when in position. To remove you would need to press down on the plug to release it from the socket. This means that there is no way that the cable should detach from the mower under normal conditions.
Please try this and let me know.
      Mark
