The real breakthrough: AWD without lawn scuffing
This is where the Navimow i2 really separates itself from a lot of the competition.
Most AWD robot mowers use a four wheel design. That gives good traction, but it can also be hard on the lawn. During tight turns, especially near the charging station or in corners, they can scrub the grass and leave marks.
Navimow has gone a different route with what is effectively a three wheel AWD layout.
You have two large driven wheels at the rear and a caster style wheel at the front. The key difference is that the front wheel is not just trailing along. It is powered and actively involved in steering.

Setup is genuinely simple
A lot of people still assume robot mowers are fiddly. This one really is not.
I had it connected and ready quickly. The app walked through the process clearly, picked up the mower without fuss, and let me get on with mapping.
Because there is no boundary wire and no RTK station to install, most of the work is simply deciding where the charging station goes and then mapping the lawn.
I do not like putting charging stations on the grass if I can avoid it. Grass grows around them, they can look untidy, and turning activity near the dock can wear the turf. So I placed mine off the lawn on a path.
That worked well, though it does mean you need to make sure there is enough clearance around the station for the mower to maneuver properly.
Manual mapping versus auto mapping
The app gives two ways to build your lawn map:

Auto mapping is quick and very convenient. If you want the fastest route to getting started, it is excellent.
But personally, I still prefer manual mapping for important areas.
Why? Because I can be more precise with edges and corners. If there is a flush edge where the grass meets paving, I can intentionally run the mower slightly over the hard edge so there is little or no trimming left to do. That level of control is hard to beat.
The good news is that Navimow makes manual mapping pleasant rather than frustrating. The mower can creep along very slowly for accuracy, and if I make a mistake, I can erase the recent section and redo it without restarting the whole process.

Map editing is one of the best app features
This was one of the pleasant surprises.
If an auto mapped boundary is not exactly how I want it, I do not have to scrap the whole map. I can go back in and edit it, either by driving the mower or by adjusting the map directly in the app.

Crossing gravel and small obstacles
One simple test I was very curious about involved a gravel section. Several two wheel drive mowers I have tested struggle badly here. They dig in, lose momentum, or get stuck.

Ramps can confuse robot mowers because they may be detected as obstacles rather than a route.
That happened here initially. The mower saw the ramp and was not happy to continue.
But the fix was excellent. In the app, I could mark that area as a VisionFence off zone, which tells the mower to ignore perceived obstacles there. Once I did that, it went straight up the ramp and carried on normally.
This is a great feature for gardens where access between levels depends on a ramp or where overhanging plants might otherwise trigger unnecessary avoidance.
Cut quality and edge performance
In terms of cut, the mower performed very well. It held straight lines neatly, handled longer grass capably, and got into corners better than I expected.
One thing I particularly liked was how it sometimes reversed slightly into corners to finish them more cleanly. That gave a tidier result than several rival mowers I have tried in the same awkward areas.
Now, it is important to be realistic about robotic mowing. Unless a mower can physically overhang the edge, there will usually still be some trimming left to do in certain areas. That is normal.
Where the edge was flush with paving and I had mapped properly, the results were excellent. Where obstacles or raised borders limited access, there was still a narrow strip to tidy by hand.
That is not a flaw unique to this mower. It is just the reality of edge cutting.
Obstacle avoidance was very impressive
I tested the VisionFence obstacle system with a few different objects, including balls and a flatter item that many mowers usually fail to notice.

Night mowing is not a gimmick here
Because the mower combines LiDAR with GPS and vision, it can work in the dark. It also has a front light and runs very quietly.
I set it out overnight, and by morning the lawn was cut beautifully. The garden was completely dark, but the mower had no issue completing the job.
That is a genuine practical benefit. If you prefer the mower to work while everything is otherwise idle, or you simply want the lawn done before the day begins, this machine is well suited to it.

The slope test showed the real difference between 2WD and AWD
I do not have a severe slope on my own lawn, so I took the mower elsewhere to test what it could really do.
I ran the older two wheel drive Navimow on the same incline first. As expected, it struggled badly. It lost traction, the wheel spun, and it simply could not deal with the hillside properly.
Then I switched to the i2 AWD.
The difference was immediate. It climbed strongly, held its line better across the slope, and looked far more settled. On the very steepest section, the tilt sensor stepped in as a safety measure, which is exactly what I would want. But within its rated range, the traction was outstanding.

Another detail I like is that the AWD system is not just permanently brute forcing everything.

The few downsides I found
No mower is perfect, and I always try to be fair about the weaker points too.
1. I could not find fine manual control over mowing speed
The app offers different work modes such as standard and more precise operation, and the mower does seem to slow itself automatically when the grass gets heavier.
But I could not find a direct manual setting that lets me simply say, mow slower this time.

My final verdict
I came into this test expecting the Navimow i2 Pro to be interesting. I did not expect it to feel this complete.
What Segway has done here is solve several of the usual compromises in one go. It offers AWD traction without the usual lawn abuse. It offers advanced navigation without forcing a physical RTK setup. It offers premium capability in models that still make sense for ordinary lawn sizes.
That is why I keep coming back to the same conclusion. This is one of the easiest robotic mowers for me to recommend right now.
Is it perfect? No. I would still like more manual control over mowing speed, and the 4G renewal cost is worth noting.
But overall, this is a seriously well thought out robotic mower. For the right lawn, it may well be the sweet spot.
