Sprint 530SPX Review

Summary

The Sprint 530SPX is a self-propelled petrol mower fitted with a 161cc Briggs and Stratton engine and has 4-in-1 cutting options. These comprehensive options include cut and collect, mulching, side discharge and rear discharge. This mower has a 53cm cutting width, steel deck, 6 cutting heights that can be adjusted from 28mm to 92mm and a large 70 litre soft mesh grass collection bag.

As far as petrol lawn mowers are concerned, you will struggle to find something quite as impressive as this Sprint self-propelled beauty. I don’t know for certain whether it is the powerful Briggs and Stratton engine, the excellent build quality or the wealth of features, but there is something about this mower that sets it apart from the rest. And while you might think that this means it will come with a hefty price tag; you’d be wrong. The Sprint 530SPX is surprisingly affordable, all things considered.

The The Sprint 530SPX comes with a 4-in-1 design that gives you excellent versatility when mowing your lawn as well as a ginormous 53cm blade that will make mowing a larger lawn much less time consuming. Since Sprint is owned by Briggs and Stratton, you can always feel confident that the engine is of the utmost quality and will deliver an immaculate performance.

When I initially gave this mower the once over, I have to say that I was more than impressed. If you’re looking for a piece of garden equipment to invest in for the long-term, I’d seriously consider this model. In my Sprint 530SPX review, I’ll be detailing all the exciting features that you can expect to enjoy when purchasing this model.

Main features

  • 53cm cutting width
  • 6 cutting heights
  • Folding, adjustable handles
  • 70 litre grass box
  • ReadyStart
  • Wash port
  • 4-in-1 mowing function
  • Briggs and Stratton engine
  • Self-propelled drive
  • 2-year warranty

Engine

Sprint 530SPX Engine

As I have mentioned, Sprint is owned by Briggs and Stratton. If you aren’t familiar with this company, they manufacture some of the best engines on the planet, so when you buy a Sprint, you’ll always be getting an excellent quality motor.

This particular model features the Briggs and Stratton 750EX DOV series engine. DOV stands for direct overhead valve and in short, this means that the engine will generate much higher torque with fewer vibrations and less noise. The 161cc 4 stroke engine is perfectly suited to the machine it is operating and will provide incredible power that will make lawn mowing easier than ever. What’s more, this engine is designed for the long haul, provided it is well taken care of, so there’s no worry of having poor starting or having to replace it any time soon.

Performance

In terms of performance, you couldn’t ask for more. It’s because of that powerful engine that I have just talked about that this mower delivers a smooth, quiet and easy ride that is perfect for larger gardens. As I mentioned, it operates quietly without a huge amount of vibration making it much more comfortable for the user.

The Sprint 530SPX mower boasts a clean and precise cut. If you have ever used a substandard mower, you’ll know how difficult it can be to get the cut spot on. Not only will it be clean and even but with such power behind it, you won’t have to keep going over the same patch of lawn to get the desired result. In short, the job isn’t going to take anywhere near as long.

Many people are reluctant to use a petrol mower owing to the fact that some are tricky to start. This one comes with ReadyStart, a feature that is seen on all Briggs and Stratton engines and while there is no electric start, that really won’t matter with how simple this recoil start is to get going. The ReadyStart system means that there is no priming and no choke; simply just pull the recoil and the engine will start.

Self-propelled Drive

Sprint 530SPX Performance

Many petrol lawn mowers come with the downside of being incredibly heavy and this can make it difficult to move around the garden. However, a lot of them also come with a self-propelled drive and this Sprint 530SPX is no exception. This smooth self-propelled mower glides around the garden at a single speed of 3.6km/h which will match the walking speed of most adults.

Blade and Deck

One of the most outstanding things about this lawn mower is the incredibly durable and well-made deck. Crafted from steel, you are getting something robust enough to stand up to any challenge and that will resist corrosion and damage. This is anything but flimsy, so if you want something that will stand the test of time, this is worth considering.

What’s more, you are getting a 53cm high lift blade which is a very generous size indeed. This is ideal for larger lawns and will mean that your mowing time is drastically reduced. However, if you think that this will be a little too large, there is the option to downsize to a smaller model that would work well for a medium sized lawn (comparison table with more information below). If you are looking for a slightly smaller deck, you could take a look at the 46cm Sprint 460SPX model. There is also an even smaller model of this mower called the Sprint 420SP self-propelled petrol mower that has a 42cm deck size, but is not available with the ReadyStart feature.

Handles

You might think that the handles on your lawn mower won’t affect how easy it is to use, but the opposite is true. If you take into consideration all the features that the handles on the Sprint 530SPX has, it’s easy to see how they can make a huge difference.

For starters, the handles fold away which makes storing the mower so much more simple. In addition to this, there are three height settings on the handle meaning that you can adjust it to your height, giving you a much more comfortable experience.

If that wasn’t enough, Sprint has created an ergonomically designed handle with foam padding, which offers superior comfort for the hands and absorbs more vibrations.

Height Adjustment

Sprint 530SPX Mowing Features

Depending on the season, you may want the option to cut your lawn at different heights. Doing this is incredibly easy with the Sprint 530SPX since it boasts a central cutting height adjustment lever that is brilliantly easy to use. There are six cutting heights to choose from ranging between 28mm and 92mm offering excellent versatility when it comes to choosing how you cut your lawn.

Mowing Features

Earlier, I mentioned that this is a very affordable mower and when you think about everything that you get with it, that point becomes very apparent. One of the things that makes this mower such good value for money is that you have four options when it comes to how you mow, and that is on top of the selection of cutting heights!

You have the full choice of cut and collect, side discharge, rear discharge and mulching. Mulching is a feature that not all petrol mowers are equipped with, but I think it should be more freely included when you consider all the benefits mulching has to offer.

With this Sprint mower all you need to do is simply insert the mulching plug and your grass cuttings will be delivered back to the lawn giving it essential nutrients like nitrogen to boost its health and growth. It’s a simple concept but one that pays dividends.

Grass Box

If you choose the cut and collect option, you will be pleased to know that the number of times you have to stop and empty the mower is massively minimised when using this lawn mower. This is mostly thanks to the huge 70-litre grass box. This is a soft bag that is easy to empty and its large size is just one of the many conveniences of the mower.

The grass box locks into its place well and can easily be removed. One criticism of all cloth collection bags is that when cutting dry dusty lawns, dust can be thrown up through the top of the collection bag towards the operator. With this Sprint the solid plastic locking flap sits above the collection bag and helps to prevent this from happening.

Practicalities

This Sprint 530SPX features a handy hose wash port on the deck. You can insert your hose into this to make cleaning the deck so much simpler and quicker. It is important to keep your mower deck clean and rinsing it regularly will certainly improve the cutting and collection performance of the mower as well as boosting its longevity.

What’s more,  the lawn mower comes with an impressive two-year warranty. While I am confident that not much will go wrong with this exceptional piece of equipment, it is always nice to be covered in the event that it does.

Sprint 530SPX Mowing Conclusion

I’m feeling as though I want to recommend this mower to everyone because of its amazing features and ease of use. However, there are people that it would be better suited to and this would certainly include anyone who has a large garden and wants a powerful lawn mower that will reduce mowing time without compromising on cut quality.

This is also the ideal petrol mower for people who are looking for a product that will last them for many years. Owing to the reliability and power of the Briggs and Stratton engine, the Sprint 530SPX is a mower that you can look forward to working with for many years.

What’s more, this is a great introduction to the petrol mower for newbies as it doesn’t feature a tricky cumbersome prime and choke recoil start, but rather a smooth and easy to start ReadyStart feature. It also offers a generous choice of cutting methods and pretty much everything you would expect from a petrol mower.

  1. Harry Seaford

This mower, a Sprint 530SPX, has a lot of great features. It replaced a mountfield SP550. The start is easier, the self propelling is at a better speed. The tank has better capacity. I prefer the larger rear wheels. It’s 15 years younger!
However its cutting is far worse especially considering it’s a new blade versus an old pitted blade. The Sprint seem to flatten the grass before cutting rather than lift and cut. So although a professed 2.8cm cutting height, my grass is nearer 4cm tall after cutting. On a minor issue – it’s quite long, so shed space may be an issue for some or – like me – owners may have to fold the handle to stow it.
    Amazon did deliver very quickly.

    1. Thanks Harry for your feedback. Pleased that you are happy with the mower apart from the cut. It is very unusual for any of the Sprint range to cut poorly and higher than stated. The blade is designed to lift the grass, not flatten it, something doesn’t seem right. Has the blade been removed or changed or is it factory fitted? Thanks again Mark
