
I have tested a lot of robotic lawn mowers, and I’ll be honest, when I first realised the TerraMow V1000 was a camera-only machine, I was sceptical.

That sounded ambitious. After setting it up and testing it properly, I came away genuinely impressed.

Here it comes in the box, and that matters. A garage helps protect the mower while it is charging and sitting idle. If your mower is near trees, you’ll know exactly why that helps. Sap, dirt, falling debris, and general grime build up fast, especially around cameras and sensors. The TerraMow roof extends nicely over the machine and should do a much better job of keeping it clean than leaving it exposed.

The key idea behind the TerraMow V1000
The big talking point here is navigation.
This mower does not use perimeter wire. It also does not rely on RTK satellite positioning for mowing guidance. Instead, it uses what TerraMow calls TerraVision, a triple-camera AI system on the front of the mower.
That changes the entire setup experience.
With boundary wire systems, you have to peg or bury a wire around the edge of the lawn and around obstacles. With RTK systems, setup is cleaner, but now you are dealing with base stations, signal strength, installation position, and the occasional frustration of poor satellite coverage.
The V1000 strips all of that away. The cameras do the work.
What makes it even more interesting is that this is not one of those vision mowers that just pings about randomly. It is designed to mow systematically in straight lines, which is exactly what I want to see from a modern robot mower.

This particular model is the V1000, although the naming is a little misleading because its stated coverage is actually up to 1,200 square metres, or about 13,000 square feet. There is also a smaller V600 model for lawns up to 600 square metres.

Underneath, it uses a three-blade cutting disc, and TerraMow includes nine spare blades in the box. Another practical point I liked is that the battery is accessible behind a screwed cover rather than being deeply buried inside the machine. That should make battery servicing or replacement more straightforward than on some models.

Build quality and design
Some robot mowers look great in photos but feel flimsy in person. That is not the case here.
The TerraMow V1000 feels solid. The plastics are decent, the wheels feel robust, and there is a proper handle at the back for lifting it. That sounds like a small detail, but it is one of those things you appreciate very quickly. If you ever need to move a robot mower, rescue it, clean it, or reposition it, having a clearly designed lifting point makes a big difference.
It also has a rubber bumper around the body to take the scuffs instead of the main shell taking the damage.
It may not be the flashiest-looking mower I’ve ever seen, but it does feel like one of the better-built ones I’ve tested.
Important limitation before you buy
This is a two-wheel-drive mower with a front caster wheel.
That means it will not suit every property. If your lawn is steep, rough, or involves crossing gravel, loose stones, or awkward transitions between zones, you do need to think carefully.
On my test area, the front caster wheel would not happily cross certain stones on its own, so I used a plastic bridge plate to help it over. On a flat lawn with sensible routes between zones, it is absolutely fine. But if you are expecting it to cross rough gravel or tackle particularly nasty terrain, that is asking too much from this version.
TerraMow are apparently working on a four-wheel-drive version, and that would be the model to look out for if your garden is more demanding.
How simple is setup really?
This is one of the strongest points of the V1000.
Setup was refreshingly simple. I added the mower in the app, connected it, updated the firmware, and then let it begin mapping.
Firmware updates need Wi-Fi or 4G, but the mower itself does not need constant Wi-Fi coverage across the garden in order to mow. If you are standing near it, you can connect over Bluetooth. It also includes built-in 4G with one year of data included, which is useful if you want remote monitoring or your garden is beyond Wi-Fi range.
After the first year, the 4G renewal cost is modest at around £19, $19, or €19 depending on region, which is very reasonable if you want that remote access.

Where you can place the charging station
One of the surprises with this mower was how flexible the charging station placement could be.
With some camera-guided machines, I would expect the base to need a very obvious, open position on or right beside the lawn. In this case, I found the TerraMow could still navigate back successfully even when the base was positioned away from the main mowing area. It identifies the dock using the visual marker pattern on the back of the charging station.
That is a real advantage because I do not like having charging stations sitting awkwardly on the grass with long blades growing up around them. If you can place the dock more discreetly and create a channel route to it, the whole setup looks much neater.

Auto mapping is better than I expected
The V1000 uses automatic mapping only. At first, that sounds like a disadvantage because manual mapping often gives more control. In practice, TerraMow has built enough editing tools into the app that the lack of manual mapping is far less of an issue than I expected.
When I started the mapping process, the app let me set the mowing direction first. That is a very nice touch because I could tell it to mow in the orientation that would leave stripes visible from the house.
Then the mower simply came off the dock and began recognising grass, edges, paths, and boundaries using the cameras. As it moved, the map built up in the app.
What impressed me most was the accuracy. It was recognising the lawn and hard edges cleanly, and it was doing it without the usual hesitation I’ve seen from other vision systems.

No manual mapping, but still loads of control
Although the actual map generation is automatic, the app gives you a lot of control over how the map behaves.
I wanted to stop the mower from mapping my whole lawn during testing, so I created a virtual fence across part of the area. That worked brilliantly.
The no-go tools are more advanced than I expected. You can create:

- Polygons
- Ellipses
- Virtual fence lines
That means you can block off trampolines, borders, furniture, or temporary areas without touching the mower physically. If your lawn blends into a neighbour’s with no obvious divider, a virtual fence can keep the mower exactly where it should be.

There is also a map boundary lock setting, which stops the mower from continuing to expand the map after you’re happy with it.

Creating multiple zones and pathways
Multi-zone performance is where many camera-only mowers fall down. This is where the TerraMow V1000 started to surprise me properly.
I created a second zone by using manual remote control in the app. You simply set a start point, drive the mower to the next lawn area using the on-screen joystick, and then set an end point. The mower then creates the channel between the two zones and maps the new area automatically.
It really is that straightforward.
I did this across a path, through a narrow access route, and into another lawn area. Then I created a third zone at the front. The mower handled all of it with far more confidence than I expected from a vision-based machine.
What stood out was the way it travelled between zones. Some RTK and lidar mowers I’ve tested have snaked awkwardly down paths, weaving from one edge to the other. The TerraMow just went in a clean straight line.

The app is one of the best parts of the package
Good hardware can be ruined by a poor app. That is not the case here.
The TerraMow app is genuinely packed with useful features, and more importantly, they make sense.

Rain detection and weather awareness
The V1000 includes a rain sensor and lets you decide exactly what to do with it.
You can make it avoid mowing in rain, choose how long it waits before trying again, and also use weather-aware operation so it avoids heading out during poor conditions.
Personally, I generally prefer not to mow wet grass with a robot mower. Wet clippings tend to build up underneath the deck and increase cleaning requirements, so it is useful to have these controls.
How it actually mows
This is the part that matters most.
Once I sent the TerraMow out to mow a zone, it worked in the exact way I hoped it would. It cut in straight, systematic lines. No random bouncing about. No obvious confusion. Just neat passes up and down the lawn.
And it is very quiet as well.
That combination of straight-line mowing and low noise makes it feel much more refined than the average vision-guided robot mower.

Obstacle avoidance test
I tested the mower with a few different obstacles to see how reliable the camera-based avoidance really was.
First, I placed a football in its path. It saw it immediately, backed away, and adjusted its route.
Then I tried a smaller ball with the mower still on the default obstacle setting, not the most sensitive mode. It still detected it.
After that, I tried a glove, which is the kind of low object many robot mowers fail to recognise. Plenty of machines will simply run over something like that and shred it. The TerraMow spotted it and avoided it.
I also wanted reassurance that if something moved into its path at the last moment, it would react quickly enough. That test also went well. It detected the new obstacle and stopped trying to push through.
For peace of mind around toys, pets, and general garden clutter, that performance was very reassuring.

Edge cutting and corner performance
Edge cutting is one of the biggest frustrations with robot mowers. Too many of them leave a strip all the way around the lawn, and then you’re still out there with a strimmer.
The TerraMow V1000 did a much better job than I expected.
On default settings with the edge distance at zero, it was already cutting very close to borders. In some places it was even going slightly over the edge where it had room to do so safely.
But the really clever part was what it did in corners.
Instead of simply turning and leaving triangular patches behind, it would often reverse into the corner to finish it off properly. I have not seen many mowers do that well. On several awkward corners in my test lawn, it left far less uncut grass than other robot mowers I’ve tried in the same space.
It was particularly good in the small awkward sections that usually catch robot mowers out. Was it absolutely perfect? No. There were still tiny areas left in some corners. But compared with the amount other machines often leave behind, it was a very strong result.

The most impressive part of the whole test was the navigation.
I had it move from one lawn, across a transition, down a narrow path, into another zone, and later up a ramp to the front lawn. It handled these journeys confidently and directly.
That is what surprised me most. Not just that it could do it, but how little hesitation there was. It did not spend ages turning around trying to work out where it was. It simply moved with purpose.
Even returning to the charging station was excellent. Instead of circling around near the dock, it went straight back in cleanly.

Can it start away from the charging station?
Another interesting point from testing was that I could start it from a zone where it was already sitting rather than having to send it back to the dock first.
That is handy because some robot mowers insist on using the base station as the reference point before beginning a task elsewhere. The TerraMow seemed perfectly happy to work out where it was, orient itself, and carry on to the selected zone.
Again, for a camera-only mower, that is impressive.
What about ramps and transitions?
I specifically wanted to know whether the V1000 could handle a ramp that would let it move from one area to another. That is a common question because plenty of gardens have steps, lips, and level changes.
In my test, it managed the ramp successfully without needing special adjustment. That does not mean it will conquer every awkward garden transition, especially with the front caster wheel setup, but it was more capable here than I expected.
Cut quality
Cut quality was strong.
For the test, I let it take off more grass than you normally would with a robot mower, just to make the cutting performance more obvious. Ideally, a robot mower should be used little and often, trimming fine amounts every day or every other day so the lawn stays healthy and tidy.
Even so, the TerraMow coped well with a heavier cut than ideal and left a neat finish. The stripes from the systematic mowing pattern looked good too.

My final verdict on the TerraMow V1000
I started this test expecting to be underwhelmed by another camera-only robot mower.
Instead, the TerraMow V1000 turned out to be one of the most impressive vision-guided mowers I’ve used. In fact, in terms of camera-only navigation, it is the best I have tested so far.
That is because it combines two things that usually do not come together all that well. It is simple, and it is capable.
It removes the setup hassle of boundary wires and RTK systems, but it does not then fall apart when asked to navigate properly. It maps accurately, travels confidently between zones, cuts in straight lines, avoids obstacles well, and gets closer to edges than I expected.
If your lawn is fairly flat and you want a robot mower that avoids the headaches of perimeter wire and satellite setup, the TerraMow V1000 is a very serious option.
If, on the other hand, your property is full of gravel crossings, rough terrain, or steep slopes, I would wait to see what TerraMow do with a future four-wheel-drive model.
For the right garden, though, this one is genuinely impressive.

Great review of the TerraMow 1000. Is there any limit in the distance between areas you can program to mow. With my garden set up there is a 50 metre distance between areas due to where the access is.
I don’t believe so, I had no message warning me when mapping out to my front lawn (35m) like I did with the Luba Mini 2 1000.
