WORX WR142E M700 ReviewSummary

The WORX WR142E M700 is a new range of intelligent robotic mowers that automatically know what’s best for your lawn every day. It adapts to the size and shape of your lawn and growth rate of your grass, has a range of accessories and customisable features that make the WORX WR142E M700 agile, safe, accurate, quiet and is perfect for medium lawns up to 700m².

Robotic lawn mowers have come a long way from the first models. The WORX Landroid range uses all the best of the latest technology to quietly and efficiently complete the task with no hassle. The WORX WR142E M700 is a great option for lawns up to 700m². It can handle obstacles and odd shaped lawns, and will even cut neatly to the edge of your lawn, this is not the case with its smaller brother the WORX WR130E. It even mulches the cut grass to make the lawn water-wise, greener and healthier.

Once you have done the set up you can get busy with other work or relax while the Landroid keeps your lawn neat and healthy. You will barely have to lift a finger for a beautifully manicured lawn that will be the envy of your neighbours.

Let’s take a closer look at the features and functions of the WORX WR142E M700 robotic lawn mower.

WORX WR130E S300 Landroid configureNavigation System

WORX have created robotic lawn mowers that are practically plug and play. Once you have downloaded the app for Android or iPhone for the WORX WR142E M700, simply walk through the lawn area and the machine will work it out from there.

The Landroid has a sophisticated navigation system that is powered by AIA (Airitifical Intelligence Technology). Use your smartphone to walk the lawn area and it will calculate the area and the best way to cut it. As it mows it learns, so it will improve efficiently over time. This technology, combined with the other design features and the boundary wire help the robot mower to avoid obstacles and mow right to the edge. The intelligence will factor in the weather conditions and the growth rate, in order to work out the best mowing plan.

The AIA technology on the WORX WR142E M700 and on all the new WORX robotic mowers, uses artificial intelligence for greater accuracy and precision. If you have a more complex lawn shape this is a great advantage. It will find its way through narrow gaps, navigate tricky bends and details with ease. It also has a multi-zone programming option for other parts of the garden.

For even trickier gardens you can purchase the Off Limits feature as an optional extra.

WORX WR130E S300 BatteryPower System

You will enjoy your WORX Landroid so much, chances are that you might get some of their other garden tools or power tools if you don’t already have them. There are many options available and the great thing is that the batteries are interchangeable.

The WR142E M700 Landroid Robotic Mower comes with a powerful 20V 2.0Ah Lithium-ion battery. Not only will this give your Landroid plenty of battery life but can also be used or swapped with other WORX products. This is a great convenience and will allow you to purchase other garden tools at a discount without the battery.

WORX WR130E S300 ChargingCharging Station

The charging station is small and neat. WORX call it a stealth charger given that it is so compact you will barely see it. If you do happen to notice it you will appreciate the sleek stylish looks. It is also cleverly designed with a grid to avoid the mess of grass cuttings that normally surround most robotic lawn mower charging stations.

All you need is a small flat area near a power outlet. The lateral charging contacts allow the Landroid to get close without needing too much space (this is not the case with many other robotic mowers I have reviewed). The charging function is obviously automatic, so as soon as the Landroid is running low on power it will head back to the station for a quick charge.

Blade

The blade is actually 3 ultra-sharp good quality blades that are fixed to a disk. They spin in both directions. The benefit of this is that the blades last longer and stay sharp for longer. They also cut more evenly. The blade life is basically doubled thanks to this action. They will need to be sharpened and replaced but not nearly as often as regular mower blades.

Worx WR142E M700 Side

Control Panel & Setup

Setup is quick and easy but you want to take your time and do it well. A good setup will improve the performance of the Landroid and give you better results. It only has to be done once so invest a bit of time and effort in the process and you won’t regret it.

Before you start, read through the instructions and have the following handy:

  • Scissors
  • Wire Cutters
  • Hammer or mallet
  • Tape measure

Give some thought to the layout of your lawn so you can plan the installation in advance. You want to create a logical hassle-free design for the Landroid operation.
When planning, consider the following factors:

  • Obstacles
  • Driveway
  • Paving
  • Trees
  • Flower beds
  • Slopes, bumps, and depressions

Setting up the WR142E M700

Follow the instructions to complete these 7 steps:-

  1. Locate the charging base – the first step is to position the charging base. Find a flat area that is out of the way, easily accessible and near a power outlet.
  2. Charge the Landroid.
  3. Run and peg the boundary cable along the perimeter (can also be buried).
  4. Connect the wires to the base.
  5. Connect the Landroid to your Wi-Fi.
  6. Download the app and create an account.
  7. Walk the garden with your smartphone using the app to check the area.

Firmware updates can be done manually using the USB port, or allow for automatic over the air updates.

Mowing Features

WORX WR142E M700 Review

Cut to Edge

The smaller WORX WR130E S300 does not have this great feature, in fact, most robotic lawn mowers lack this convenience. Without it, you will either have to live with unfinished edges or do them manually every so often. The WORX WR142E M700 has a cut to edge feature meaning that you will not have this hassle. Provided you have set your boundary wire up correctly the robot mower will cut neatly all the way to the edge of the lawn. The blades are offset to enable it to do a precise job.

Cutting Pattern

At first, the cutting pattern may look a bit random or haphazard. As it works and travels over your lawn, the AIA artificial intelligence technology is constantly learning and it will get better all the time. It will work out the fastest and most efficient way to mow the area. This intelligence will prevent any repetitive pattern seen on many other robotic lawn mowers.

Narrow Passages

Narrow passages are a challenge for many robotic lawn mowers but the WR142E handles them very well. The unit itself is compact but more importantly, the AIA artificial intelligence technology allows them to handle gaps and narrow passages with ease.

Multi-Zone

Most gardens will have more than one area or zone. The WORX WR142E M700 has a multi-zone programming feature to accommodate this, and allow it to work seamlessly and automatically in different parts of your garden.

Height Adjustment

Some robotic lawn mowers make height adjustment tricky. This is not the case with the WORX Landroid Robotic Mowers. The WORX WR142E M700 has an easy to adjust 4 step heights ranging from 30mm to 60mm, that only takes a few seconds. Depending on the type of grass, the season, rainfall and mowing frequency, you will need to adjust the height from time to time for a perfect looking lawn that is healthy and weed free.

Mulching

There are many benefits to mulching. First of all, it saves time as there is no need to empty a grass box. A mulching lawn mower will cut the grass blades into fine pieces and leave them behind on the lawn. As they break down they act as a natural fertiliser and return nutrients to the soil. Mulching also protects from water loss making the lawn more hardy in dry times. This practice saves money on fertilisers, is eco-friendly and nourishes the grass.

With conventional mowing, mulching can be tricky. As the Landroid is designed to mow regularly and designed for mulching, it is effortless to do.

As the grass cuttings are cut so finely, they will not stick to your feet or be visible, so no mess only the benefits to enjoy!

To learn more about the benefits of mulching, see my article The Benefits of Mulching Grass.

Rain Sensor

While it is not ideal to mow your lawn in the rain, in some areas this will mean going weeks without mowing. The Landroid has a rain sensor that will detect the presence of rain. If rain is detected the WORX WR142E M700 will stop mowing and resume once the rain has stopped. You can, however, adjust the sensitivity and allow it to continue mowing in light rain. The design and build of the Landroid are such that it can generally continue to mow in the rain. As it is intended to be used regularly a bit of mowing in the rain will not harm the lawn and will not damage the Landroid.

WORX WR130E S300 AppWORX App & Installation

You can control your WORX WR142E M700 either using the display panel on the device or using the smartphone app. When you are charging the device up, download the app at the same time. It is free and available for iOS as well as Android. Then, sit back and let the machine do its thing.

While you can do it manually via USB, the firmware is automatically kept up to date with over the air updates. You can download the respective apps here:

You can even download the app to get a feel for the operation before making a purchase. The app is free. It gives you all the relevant information you need and complete remote control of the device.

Ensure the Landroid is connected to Wi-Fi and follow the setup instructions after installing the app.

Safety Features

As you would expect from a quality robotic lawn mower, the WORX WR142E M700 has a number of safety features. It will only work within its own defined network. Safety features include:

  • Lift & Tilt Sensors

The blades stop spinning if any lift or tilt is detected.

  • Quick-Stop Blade

If any problems are encountered there is a quick-stop feature that will stop the blades spinning instantly.

  • PIN & Alarm System

This protects the Landroid from children playing with the machine or unauthorized use. The Landroid will only function within its own network. These features make it less likely to be stolen while also keeping your family and staff safe.

  • Lawn Mower Garage

Whilst your robotic mower is completely fine working in the sun and rain, you do have the option to build or purchase a lawn mower garage. If you are not building one yourself, then there are many different designs and options available. Most robotic mower manufacturers will have a dedicated docking station roof, that will provide some protection from the rain and sun, however you can take it one step further and have a completely bespoke design. To see what can be achieved see my article Top 9 Best Robotic Lawn Mower Garage Ideas.

WORX WR130E S300 Accessories ListAccessories

One clever design benefit that helps to keep the Landroid prices down is that you don’t pay for unnecessary features. It comes with everything you need for quality mowing but if you want to get more out of your investment, there are some amazing accessories that can be purchased separately.

WORX offers a number of optional extras that for a small additional investment will make your WORX WR142E M700 even more user-friendly, convenient and effective. This is what WORX have for now and they intend to launch even more in the near future:

  • Voice Control

WORX WR142E M700 Review

As much convenience as the automatic and app-controlled device gives you, you can even add voice control for even more freedom and ease of use. Perhaps you do not want to look at your phone or you battle to do this. You might just not enjoy the technology. If so, voice control is a great solution. You can operate the majority of the functions effortlessly with just your voice using this option.

It is easy to install, setup and operate.

  • Find My Landroid

Security is always an issue with quality equipment such as the Landroid WR142E M700. Although it already features a standard PIN code as well as an alarm, you can get additional protection and peace of mind with the “Find My Landroid” feature. This feature uses the cellular function of the device to allow you to track it over GPS even without Wi-Fi and RadioLink.

  • Anti-Collision System

Irrespective of your initial setup, some parts of the lawn may be a challenge. Added to this, things change in the garden all the time. The ACS or Anti-Collision System will make your robotic lawn mower more agile and help avoid bumping into trees, branches and other obstacles in the cutting area. It does this by means of quality ultrasonic sensors. This feature allows it to steer easily through the lawn and avoid all obstacles.

  • Off Limits

This add-on feature allows you to create ring-fenced areas. While you can do this with the original boundary wire it can be a bit tricky. This method is a lot more effective and easier to apply. It makes use of a sensor that attaches to the Landroid as well as an additional strip that creates a digital fence on the area you wish the mower to avoid. It can operate independently of the boundary wire and does not need power. It is operated by a magnetic force which the sensor will pick up.

  • RadioLink

While the Wi-Fi connection is great and works well, nothing can match the power of the RadioLink for optimum communication and Artificial Intelligence capabilities.  The RadioLink uses low power communication that can travel up to 1km from the router even if there are obstacles in the way.

  • Basic instructions

Downsides

While the WORX WR142E M700 is a great robotic lawn mower there are a few downsides. It is important to be aware of these when considering your options:

One aspect some people complain about is the initial setup. Sure, you have to spend a bit of time doing this but only once. Thereafter you can relax and let the Landroid do all the hard work. If you read the instructions and follow them step by step, setup is fairly quick and painless. Poor setup will result in inefficient operations, untidy edges and possibly even cut boundary cables.

It is also important to remember that the WORX WR142E M700 is only suitable for lawns up to 700m2. If you use it on a lawn larger than that it will not work effectively.

It can only handle slopes to a maximum gradient of 35%.

  1. Hi Mark, is there much difference between the M500 and the M700? We like the features of the M700 but we have a relatively small garden so I’m wondering if the M500 would be sufficient for us. We would need the cut to edge function as the garden is surrounded by low walls. Our lawn is flat and a straightforward rectangular sort of shape. It would be ideal to be able to manually lift the mower to the front garden to mow that area as well, is that possible with both the M500 and the M700? Thank you for your help.

    1. Hi Chantel

If your lawn is less than 500m2 then go for the M500. They are identical machines apart from the amount of boundary wire/clips and cutting time each day.

Yes, you can setup secondary zones as long as you can run the wire to the front garden in a continuous loop and lift the mower into that zone. If not you will need a second base/charger station.

See the following for more details.

      https://support.worx-europe.com/how-to-set-up-multi-zone

      Hope this helps.

      Mark

  2. I’m just thinking of buying a 142E (early June 2021), but I wonder if it is worth waiting for, and paying the extra for a 167E (about an extra £150). What are your thoughts?

    Many thanks…

    1. Hi Tony, I would personally wait for the 167E for the floating deck alone. You will also get the full water proof body which will allow you to hose it down, which is also a great positive. If your lawn is completely flat and level then perhaps you will not benefit so much from these additional features, and may not be worth the additional £150. These robotic mowers are a long term investment and in the scheme of things you want a mower that will not only do a great job of maintaining your lawn, but you want it to be as trouble free as possible and having the features you really need.

Please let me know what you decide and how you get on when released.
      Mark

      1. I should have waited, but rashly went ahead and ordered a 142E as, I suppose, I like to have new toys to play with! Hopefully, I won’t regret it!

  3. Superb website. The comments from Paul and Chris are particularly relevant. My back lawn is almost completely surrounded by low walls or a decking, so the ability to mow right up to the edge is especially important. For that reason, the M700 (or maybe M500) look perfect. But I too have two completely separate lawn areas. I was a bit worried by your concern about a 20m distance for one person’s two lawn areas. For my two sections of lawn, the shortest distance is about six metres. But there are steps between them that make it very hard to create a path that the mower could negotiate. I am quite happy to manually move the M700 from one location to the other. So based on your review, and my other research, my gut feel says go for the M700, probably with some additional boundary wire, and create a link from rear to front lawn. I would then install the M700 for an hour so so each time on the front lawn, but make sure to return it “home” to recharge.

    1. Hi Andrew, thanks for your positive comments about the site. Yes it is unfortunate that you have steps between the 2 areas, so manually moving the mower to the other area occasionally is the best option.

  4. Hi Mark, great insightful information. I’m looking at the robotic mowers for the first time and have a typical UK property with front and rear gardens, connected by a passage at the side of the house. From a few hours of reading and watching videos across different manufacturers, web sites and review sites, I don’t get a sense that covering front and back garden is well catered for? Would love to get your perspective on this and any info on how best to setup for this? Thanks.

    1. Hi Paul

      Thanks for you message.

If you have a relatively close, level and unobstructed passage between the two lawns you should be good (a floating deck is less like to get stuck).

Alternatively you can create separate areas but they will need to be connected to the same charging base at all times. The boundary wires would be run close together along the passage to ensure the mower does not try to navigate it. The alternative is to have a separate charging station but will need to pair up each time you manually change areas.

The Flymo EasiLife robotic mowers have taken this a step further, whereby they have a secondary area mowed. When the mower is mowing in the area without the charge station it will alert you when it needs to be taken to the primary area to be recharged. You can see how to configure a secondary area on page 18 onward in the Flymo user manual below –

  5. Thanks for the great reviews on your website. They are the best reviews I’ve come across. I have a relatively tiny lawn split over 2 lawned areas. One is about 70m2 and an u usual shape and the other is about 40m2 and is triangle. They are not connected and are about 20m apart with a step between them. I want something relatively small, that cuts to the edge and can mow both areas.
I’m drawn to the Worx S300 but it doesn’t have the edge cutting so I’m thinking of the M700 even though it’s for bigger lawns. Is it considerably larger than the 300?
In terms of the two areas, can I pick the mower up and set it going on the smaller lawn and then lift it back?
    Thanks
    Chris

    1. Hi Chris, many thanks for your positive feedback.

Yes you can create separate areas for the WORX but they will need to be connected to the same charging base at all times. The alternative is to have a separate charging station but will need to pair up each time you manually change areas. Yes the M700 cuts to the edge, unlike the S300. The dimensions of the mowers are – S300 507x361x205 mm / M700 558x404x205 mm.

The WORX mowers are outstanding mowers. My only concern is the 20m distance you have between the zones.

Link to my review is below, please note that this mower does not cut to the edge as the WORX –

  6. Hi Mark,
    Great website.
I purchased the Flymo Easilife 350 and although its ok I am having issues with it. I setup the guide wire with a set square for accuracy and although it worked ok for a few days it now won’t dock and always misses the centre. Couple of issues with the software and support doesn’t seem that great. I am still within the return time and just agonising over whether to return it and go for the Worx WR141E or try another Easilife – I have 400 sq meters of lawn?
Would be very grateful for your reply.

    1. Hi Mark,

Thanks for your email. Sorry to hear you are having issues with the Flymo. To be honest, I have not had anyone who experienced these issues before and I am sure they can be resolved.

Have you already spoken to Flymo’s technical support team? What have they said? I do know someone who installs Husqvarna / Flymo who installs the robotic mowers, so can put you in contact.

Alternatively, the WORX robotic mowers are fantastic, in particular the new Landroid L1000, which has a floating deck. This is a little overkill for your sized lawn but I have included the link to my review below –

      Kind regards

    1. Hi Cath

No, the triangle is only used for the outward facing right angles. The internal angles are just run as normal around the perimeter. If there is a very tight internal angle you may need to run the wire in a curve, the mower will miss cutting the inner angle and some trimming would be required.

      Hope this helps.

      Many thanks
      Mark

  7. Good evening,
If I decided to put a flush footpath across the garden to a hot tub, would the mower need to avoid crossing over the footpath which would be same level as the grass? Would I need to re callabrate the boundry wire?
