Hyundai are well known for their innovative approach to anything motorised and when I look at the features of their HYM40LI380P cordless lawn mower it isn’t hard to see why. What you’re getting is essentially a hefty cutting width, especially when you compare it to its younger brother, the Hyundai HYM40LI330, which has a cutting width that is 5cm smaller at 33cm.
What’s more, this is a cordless lawn mower that is going to give you superior durability since it has been designed to withstand the elements and will not rust – when you’re putting it through its paces, you want to be sure it will measure up.
In terms of power, you won’t get anything else that is much more reliable since the battery is not only long-lasting but also super quiet, but we will look at this in a little more depth later on.
It has the nice little addition of a rear roller so if you’re looking to create a striped lawn, and I know that’s superbly popular, you have the tools to do this. There’s little doubt that with the wealth of impressive features that this mower boasts, your lawn will be the talk of the street.

Power System & Batteries
I have already mentioned that you’re getting a very decent Samsung battery with this cordless mower and when you consider that the average 2.5Ah battery gives you around 30 minutes of running time, you begin to appreciate how much you could get done on a single charge. Whilst this may not be ideal for larger lawns, it’s certainly more than ample for smaller or medium lawns.
Additionally, you’re getting a 40V motor which will make light work of your lawn if you keep it properly maintained, although it is worth noting that if you have thicker / damp grass, you might need to cut it back slightly first.
Spare batteries are readily available and can be used across the Hyundai 40V range of power tools.
Furthermore, the mower operates at a very low sound volume so, despite the good power level, you’re not going to be disturbing the neighbours.
Battery Charger
One of the first things that caught my eye when trying out this mower was that the battery charger is extremely efficient. Not only will it fully power the battery in as little as 80 minutes but it is also built to last. Each battery has the capacity to go through as many as 1000+ charges so you know you’re getting a product that is in it for the long haul.
80 minutes for a full charge is comparable with other brands, however if you need to charge even faster then there is a Hyundai fast charge available that will get the job done in a very respectable 30 minutes. This fast charger will need to be purchased separately as the standard charger is supplied with the mower.
Remember that the batteries and charger can also be used with other compatible 40 volt Hyundai tools.
Blades
The Hyundai HYM40LI380P features a steel cutting blade which can be easily sharpened or replaced when the cut quality is starting to deteriorate over time. With a generous 38cm width, these good quality blades will effortlessly cut through the grass giving you a very precise and aesthetically pleasing result.
Height Adjustment
I know that it is essential to have a decent height adjustment on your mower, after all, there are going to be times that you want the grass shorter or longer and the Hyundai HYM40LI380P doesn’t let you down. It has a generous range of cutting heights which allow you to cut anywhere between 20mm and 70mm. This is set across five different cutting heights, so you can see, your choices really aren’t limited. Unlike its smaller brother, this mower has a single lever that easily adjusts all 4 wheels simultaneously.
Cutting Diameter
Hyundai offers a good range where their cutting diameters are concerned and within this range alone you’ve got a choice of this 38cm cutting width or if you want something smaller, there is the Hyundai HYM40LI330P.
Roller (stripes)
This model does feature a rear roller which will allow you to create an attractive striped lawn. This couldn’t be more simple either and moving in parallel lines will provide you with the best effect.
The only slight issue with this roller is the width. The roller does not run across the whole width of the mower, therefore you will need to overlap each run to ensure a consistent finish.
Now, a roller isn’t an essential feature by any stretch of the imagination, but it certainly is a nice touch to have.
Please remember, this lawn mower is lightweight and any stripes it creates will not last as long as heavier mowers or rollers.
Mulching
This is nothing if not a diverse cordless mower and that is in part owed to the fact that you’re also getting a handy mulching plug. This essentially means that your grass cuttings will be strewn back out of the mower to act as fertiliser for the rest of the lawn.
If you want a healthy-looking grassed area, then taking advantage of the mulching mode is certainly advisable. But of course, since the plug can be taken out and replaced as easily as you like, you’re not under any obligation to use this mode every time you mow, so you’re free to mulch or use the grass collection box as you please.

Grass box
One of the most notable features of the Hyundai HYM40LI380P is that it can claim to be very generous in terms of its grass box. At 40 litres, you’re not going to find yourself having to stop and empty every few minutes, as is the case with some of the smaller grass boxes on the market.
However, it is also important to note that as opposed to a completely plastic container, you’re getting a part fabric bag, which is much more lightweight and so adds to the overall ease of use of this nifty little lawn mower. Furthermore, there’s a handy little grass bag indicator that lets you know when it’s time to empty and the easy on and off attachment of the bag make the experience all the more hassle-free.
Yes it is true that part fabric grass collection bags are more prone to damage, but on the plus side the circulation is improved (better for grass collection), and it folds nice and flat for reduced storage.
Practicalities
It goes without saying that Hyundai knows how to make a powerful and long-lasting product, but with the addition of the 3-year warranty, you can certainly feel confident that you’re going to get a long use out of this mower. It’s always nice to have the little bit of peace of mind, but that isn’t the only thing that serves you practically where this mower is concerned.The lack of cables means that there is no risk of accidents whilst using the equipment, but you’ll also notice that your comfort has been taken into consideration as well. This comes in the form of adjustable handles which can be easily altered according to your height – no more straining your back when cutting the grass!

Moreover, the handles fold down completely making storing the machine oh so simple and thanks to the lightweight design – just 13.9kgs, moving it around won’t be back-breaking work either. The handles fold at both the middle point and the lower point using large hand adjusted wing nuts, a nice touch as no tools are required. Oh, and did I mention that the mower can be stored vertically thanks to the addition of two small arms on each side? Along with the folding handles, fold flat grass bag, this really does help to reduce storage in your shed or garage.
Deck
Its deck is made with a poly chassis which means that this is a piece of equipment that will serve you for as long as you need without ever falling victim to rust or corrosion – essential when working with outdoor tools. No it is not the best quality deck I have tested, however I was impressed that the double skin made the sides of this Hyundai deck strong and rigid.
Wheels
Another nice touch is the fact that the wheels on the rear of this mower are larger than the front. Why is this good? Because it will help with stability and manoeuvrability particularly on uneven lawns. The front wheels are 160mm, the rear wheels are 200mm.
Since this is a fully battery-operated mower, you haven’t got the added headache of changing the oil or a hefty maintenance routine. Not only does this save you energy, but it is also a real time saver.
Safety Features
In terms of safe operation, the Hyundai HYM40LI380P boasts a handy little safety key which must be inserted to begin using the mower. This will prevent the mower from starting up unexpectedly, ideal if you’ve little ones in the garden and certainly a very well thought out safety plan. Two keys are supplied with this mower.
As with all lawn mowers, an operator presence lever needs to be continuously held on for the mower to operate. Once released the mower’s motor and blade stop very quickly.
