Guide To Purchasing An Electric Lawn Mower For A Large Lawn / Garden
What Are the Advantages Of Electric Lawn Mowers?
Electric mowers are favoured by many not only because they are lightweight, easy to start and manoeuvre, but mainly because they are inexpensive to buy, reliable to start and require little or no maintenance. Power is also a feature of electric mowers that make them a viable option for large lawns. Depending on the wattage output of your electric mower, they will compare favourably with that of cordless mowers and even some smaller engine petrol mowers.
Many electric mowers are supplied with additional features that would normally be present on high end and more expensive models. To name a few, some electric mowers will allow you to mulch your grass resulting in a healthier, greener and thicker lawn. Some also provide the option of a rear roller allowing you to achieve that beautiful and professional looking striped lawn.
Many homeowners may be surprised to learn that some electric lawn mowers also have a leaf collect function, larger rear wheels for additional grip and handy grass box full indicators letting you know when the box needs to be emptied. The vertical storage, not normally found on other powered mowers, is also becoming a rather popular option for obvious storage saving reasons.
Yes there are a few minor disadvantages when talking about electric mowers for example being limited by the power cord and its reach normally between between 10m to 15m. However, this minor limitation is outweighed by the many advantages stated above.

What Features Should You Consider?
Deck & Lawn Size
If you have a larger lawn around 200m² to 350m², make sure you consider the size of the mower’s deck. In general, the blade or size of the deck should be between 34cm and 40cm. It goes without saying that a wider the blade will cut more grass in a single pass and get the job done quicker. However, some people may prefer a smaller deck due to limited storage, transport requirements or tight spaces and passages that need to be mowed in their garden.
Below I have included a table that will guide you in picking an electric lawn mower that is suitable in terms of size for your large sized lawn.

Motor Power
Another important area worth considering is the power of the electric motor. If you are going to follow a regular lawn mowing schedule and not allow your lawn to grow too long, then a 1200 watts motor may be sufficient for a large sized lawn. If however, you are looking for a mower that will deal with tougher conditions then you should consider a motor around 1600 watts.
If the electric mower has a mulching ability and you are looking to mulch the lawn on a regular basis, then additional power is always going to be beneficial to the mulching process.
Additional Features
In addition to the above, consider what specific features you will need to effectively cut the lawn and store the mower afterwards. Everyone has different requirements and that is mainly the reason why there are so many options available on the market. Ask yourself questions like –
- Do I need a vertical storage as there is limited space in the garage / shed?
- Do I need a lightweight model for storage on a shelf?
- Do I need mulching and rear discharge in addition to the cut & collect option?
- Do I need a rear roller to achieve a striped lawn appearance?
- What about larger rear wheels for better grip?
In summary, ensure that you purchase an electric mower with the features you need, do not pay extra for fancy features that will never be used.
Many features come as standard with all electric mowers such as foldable handles, grass collection box, but you may need to check if the grass box full indicator is present if you want to remove the guesswork from the emptying process. Also check the length of the cable as some mowers are provided with varying lengths.
Cutting Options
So whilst it is true that everyone with a large sized lawn is going to want to cut and collect the grass cuttings, there may be other cutting options to consider. These include, as mentioned above mulching, side and rear discharge. Just because your electric lawn mower doesn’t come supplied with a mulching plug as standard, it doesn’t mean that the mower is not capable of mulching. Some manufacturers will provide a mulching blade and mulching plug as an optional extra. All of my reviews will state the cutting options that are provided, and also the optional extras available for any particular mower.
Side and rear discharge are two other cutting options supplied with some of the electric mowers for large sized lawns, so if you want to use them ensure that your new mower is able to deliver, as they can’t be simply added on.
Cutting Heights
Having a good range of cutting heights is important to ensure that you can cut the lawn to suit the seasons and your personal preference. Most electric mowers will come with a good range of cutting heights, but you will need to check if they suit the way in which you want your lawn to look. If you want a bowling green finish, and the lowest cutting height on your mower is 35mm, then this is not going to meet your requirement. Again, if you leave your lawn to grow exceptionally long, you are going to need a higher maximum cutting setting to ensure that you do not overload the motor causing it to cut out.
Some electric mowers require you to adjust the front and rear wheels by turning the mower over and pulling the axle in and out of slots to adjust the height. Others require you to adjust each individual wheel to the required height. The easiest and most popular method, unsurprisingly, is a single height adjustment lever, which will adjust all four wheels quickly and simultaneously.
Warranty & Support
As you have a large lawn, the electric mower is going to be used for longer periods compared to a smaller lawn. For this reason it is more important to ensure that the build quality is good and spare parts are readily available. I would recommend picking a brushless motor as these not only tend to last longer but are also somewhat quieter.
Another consideration should be the length of the warranty. Yes most manufacturers provide 2 years, but there are some that will extend this time to 3 years, or even longer. You are unlikely to use it, but it is always good to know that you have that piece of mind should something go wrong. Some brands do aftersales support and service very well, whilst others can’t be contacted for love nor money. In my reviews I always score each mower based on warranty and support to help you make the right decision.
Conclusion
In summary, if you are not too concerned about working with a mower that has a power lead, then an electric mower is not only the most cost effective, environmentally friendly, reliable and easy to operate option, but will also provide excellent results for your large sized lawn that are comparable to other powered mowers.

That said, manufacturers are making electric mowers that are much more powerful than they once were. For a large sized lawn, and for lawns that are maintained regularly, then an electric powered mower will be more than sufficient. In terms of convenience, there is nothing that is better than an electric corded mower. You don’t have the worry of the power running out since it is connected to the mains and these lightweight machines are incredibly easy to handle, not to mention low costs. Moreover, they require very little maintenance and still deliver an impressive performance.

An electric mower will last much longer when it is well taken care of. The great thing about them is that they don’t require a huge amount of maintenance, so it’s not hard work looking after one. However, investing just a little time in taking care of your electric mower will ensure that it lasts up to a decade.
Do Electric Lawn Mowers Mulch?
Many modern electric lawn mowers come with multiple mowing functions which include mulching. You’ll typically find that they come with a mulching plug which is inserted into the back of the mower where the clippings would normally enter the grass collection bag. These plugs are easy to use and open up a new way to use your mower that will benefit the health of your lawn.
Can Electric Mowers Get Wet?
When using an electric lawn mower for your large sized garden, it is imperative not to get it wet. If moisture gets into the electrical circuits, then this can cause damage and may render your lawn mower useless. Not to mention that when mixing water and electricity there is a significant risk of sustaining an electric shock. Always consult your user manual for the safe use of your mower.
Can You Mow Wet Grass With An Electric Lawn Mower?
In much the same way that you shouldn’t get your electric mower wet, it is important to avoid mowing the lawn while it’s wet. Yes. Most electric lawn mowers have enough power to tackle large sized lawns with ease. No. Oil is used by petrol mowers as they have an engine with moving parts. However, an electric mower is entirely powered using mains electricity. Therefore, there is no need for oil to lubricate the parts. This is one of the reasons that a lot of people prefer electric mowers as there is far less maintenance involved.
