This Hayter Harrier 56 is a petrol mower that exudes quality, if you are looking for something that is a cut above the rest then this is the way forward. And speaking of moving forward, the self-propelled Sens-A-Speed function will adjust the drive to your walking pace; this is convenient and makes mowing a dream.
This premium petrol mower is slightly heavier than some of its competitors, but this merely adds to the robust design that you know will stand the test of time. Also being heavier will ensure that the rear roller produces beautiful and long lasting and enviable stripes on your lawn. Furthermore, this is a high quality, power driven split rear roller that will not only allow for easy turning without damaging the lawn but also provide additional stability on uneven surfaces and cutting across the border.
Main Features
- Weight: 51.6 kg (Auto-Drive with VS) / 53.8 kg (Auto-Drive with VS & BBC) / 51.6 kg (Auto-Drive with VS and Electric Start)

- Colour: Green
- Blade Length: 56 cm

Conclusion
The Hayter Harrier 56 is very much a petrol machine that is going to be perfect for larger lawns. Being power-driven takes much of the hassle and effort away. Remember, this is a the largest Harrier available and is by its nature a heavy machine. The huge 70-litre grass collection box is going to be heavy when filled with damp grass, so you may need to empty it more often if you are elderly or frail. (the two handles on the box will help)
The Hayter Harrier does indeed get fantastic cut and long lasting stiped results that you simply will not get with the majority of other brands of lawn mower. Yes, it comes at a price. But, you not only get what you pay for with Hayter petrol mowers, but you also get to buy British that is built on quality and heritage.

The P1PE P5100 mower comes with two engine choices, the Briggs and Stratton on this model or the Hyundai IC157VE 173cc engine on the P1PE P5100SPE model (P1PE P5100SPE review here). Though you will pay a little more, I personally prefer this Briggs and Stratton engine for the following reasons.
- Easy maintenance – no need to ever change the oil – just check and top up.
- Fitted with a “Super Lo Tone” muffler that significantly reduces noise levels.
- Fitted with a Float Feed Carburettor for optimised fuel delivery and better performance.
Having said that, the Hyundai is also a fantastic engine, both are Euro 2 low emission, low maintenance and extremely economical petrol engines. I just believe it’s worth paying that bit extra on your investment to get the benefits of the Briggs and Stratton Easy Start 675EXi engine.
Main Features
- Briggs and Stratton Easy Start 675EXi 163cc 4 Stroke petrol engine
- Self propelled
- 51cm cutting width
- Never need to change the engine oil, just check and top up
- 60 L grass collection bag
- Low noise
- 6 cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm
- 2-year manufactures warranty
Conclusion
The P1PE P5100SPBS has good spares and parts backup and comes with a 2-year warranty from P1PE.
The more than adequate 6 cutting heights from 25mm up to 75mm are easy to adjust with a single height adjustment lever. It perhaps would have been advantageous if this mower had a higher setting of around 85mm to deal with really long and neglected lawns.
Pros and Cons
- Quality powerful Briggs and Stratton engine
- Never change the engine oil, just check and top up
- Super Lo Tone Exhaust Muffler
- Mulch and side discharge
- Self-propelled
- Light on fuel
- Tough and durable
- Good customer care
- OPC (Operator Presence Control) safety control
- Large 60 L grass collector bag
- Could do with a higher 85mm setting for longer grass
- No rear roller for striped lawn appearance

Guide To Purchasing The Best Electric Start Petrol Mower
So why would you want to buy a petrol mower that has the added feature of electric start and are there any downsides? Simply being able to press a button to start your petrol mower offers you the simplicity of a cordless mower, but provides the additional power that only a petrol lawn mower can provide.
Pros and Cons of an Electric Start Petrol Mower
- Quick start of the mower
- Ease of use, no physical effort required
- Reliable starting method
- 2 options available, always backed up with a recoil cord
- Main concern about starting a petrol mowers is removed
- Adds slightly to the weight of the mower, due to additional battery
- Battery has to be charged for the electric start to work (backed up with recoil)
- Higher initial investment
Why Purchase an Electric Start Petrol Mower?
Yes, there are some disadvantages of an electric start petrol mower, such as ensuring the battery is charged before setting out to mow the lawn. But having said that a single charge battery on some models will allow you to start the mower for the entire season. Alternatively most mowers will offer the ability of a quick charge that will provide enough starts for at least 20 mows. Don’t forget that you have the recoil start backup available if needed.
I mentioned above that an electric start petrol lawn mower will cost more, but how much more and is it worth paying the extra?
Looking at current Hyundai petrol models with and without the electric start, the mowers with electric start cost around £60 more compared to the same model without this function. So in my opinion the 15% extra you are going to pay for this feature is well worth the investment in terms of time and inconvenience saved.
When investing in a petrol lawn mower, getting one that best suits you and your lawn requirements is paramount to ensuring your lawn maintenance is successful and trouble free. Having an electric start petrol mower goes a long way in fulfilling this need, but just remember it will still need to be regularly maintained to ensure that the recoil and the electric start work effectively.
