Best Self-Propelled Cordless Lawn Mower

Best self-propelled cordless lawn mower to purchase in the UK

Summary

Best Self-propelled Cordless Lawn Mowers

If you’re in the market for the best self-propelled cordless lawn mower, you’ll be pleased to know that modern garden equipment has come on leaps and bounds in recent years. Cordless self-propelled lawn mowers are now available, and they make light work of cutting the grass, while removing the risk of getting tangled, mowing over the cord, or having an accident. In fact, they’re now real competitors to petrol mowers.

In my search for the best self-propelled cordless lawn mower, I’ve personally tested two models on my own lawn. I’ve scrutinised their features such as cutting width, cutting height, grass collection capacity, and ease of use, and I’ve captured my findings in video reviews so that you can see these mowers in action for yourself. This hands-on evaluation allows you to see precisely what each mower delivers, aiding you in making a well-informed decision about which one is the right fit for your gardening needs.

The first model I put to the test was the Hyundai HYM80LI460SP. This mower stood out with its 45cm cutting width and the flexibility offered by its six cutting height options. The 65L grass collection box is a generous size for efficient mowing sessions. Constructed with a sturdy steel deck and fitted with a brushless motor, the Hyundai HYM80LI460SP provided an efficient and steadfast cutting performance during my trial.

Additionally, I examined the Cobra RM43SP80V, which is a high-end offering. With a slightly more compact cutting width of 43cm and seven cutting height options, this mower affords precision and adaptability. The 50L grass collection box is suitably proportioned for routine lawn upkeep. In my review, I was particularly impressed by the Cobra’s weather-resistant design and rear roller, which not only added to its robustness but also enabled me to create the much-desired striped effect on the lawn. The powerful motor ensured that the cutting performance was first-rate, even under more challenging lawn conditions.

This guide will give you all the information you need to know to make an informed and wise choice when purchasing a cordless self-propelled lawn mower.

The EGO LM1701E-SP is one of the best battery power mowers currently on offer, and if you are looking for a neat and tidy package, then this may be it. EGO also makes a the same model with no self propulsion, that is cheaper, however I would recommend paying the extra and going for the self propelled version – LM1701E-SP.

  • Wide cutting blade.
  • 5-year warranty on the mower (3-year on batteries), if registered within 30 days of purchase.
Cons
  • Mulching plug and Rear roller are optional extras and are not included out of the box.
  • This mower is 26kg, and therefore would recommend the self-propelled model unless you have a level lawn.

88The Cobra RM43SP80V is a cordless battery lawn mower that has a 43cm cutting deck and comes supplied with a large 2 x 40V 5.0Ah battery that will give you around a 30-40 minute run time. The mower comes provided with a large 50 litre grass collection box and a wide range of cutting heights (7 stages, 17mm to 75mm), weighs 29kg and is provided with a Cobra 2 year warranty.

I was really excited to get my hands on the Cobra RM43SP80v as this is a high end, extremely well performing mower. I would say it was a pretty simple design in terms of mowing features and add ons but what it does have is done incredibly well.

For people with medium to large lawns, a robust and hard working mower is a must and that’s exactly what you’ll get with the Cobra RM43SP80v. It’s one of the most powerful cordless mowers on the market with an 80v mower and gives a great running time of up to 50 minutes.

The Cobra RM43SP80v has a lot more features to get us talking so in my Cobra RM43SP80v review, I’ll go through everything you need to know to figure out if this is the lawn mower for you. If you prefer to see the product in action, you can check out my video review of this lawn mower.

Main Features

  • 80v motor
  • 2 x 40v 5.0Ah batteries included
  • 2 x fast chargers included

I'll be honest, this has to be the nicest cordless mower I have ever tested, and that's saying something. The Cobra RM43SP80v is a brilliant investment if you want a powerful and reliable self-propelled lawn mower that produces well defined and long lasting stripes that are the envy of your neighbours.

Out of all the mowers I have tested this one is staying for my own personal use. Even my wife says "can you stripe the lawn?" instead of "can you mow the lawn?" and this Cobra is the machine to do it and do it well.

It almost feels like you are using a petrol mower, without all the noise, fumes and maintenance of course.

The batteries in this 40v range can be power shared with other tools such as hedge trimmers, grass trimmers and leaf blowers etc.

It’s robust and designed for a range of mowing situations so is perfect if you’re after something versatile and easy to operate and maintain.

It’s got everything you’d expect from a high end machine and a performance to match.

The Hyundai HYM80LI460SP is supplied with a mulching and side-discharge plug, two safety keys and is covered by a 3 year Hyundai warranty.

I finally got my hands on this Hyundai 80 volt cordless mower, and could not wait to test it out on my 500m² lawn, to see if all the positive feedback I have received is justified.

Just bear in mind there is also a push version available (without the self-propelled drive) and this is the model I used in my video review below - Hyundai HYM80LI460P (all other features are identical).

Before we get into the review of this Hyundai HYM80LI460SP Cordless Lawnmower, I think it’s worth saying a quick word about cordless self-propelled lawn mowers in general. If you asked me 3 or 4 years ago if a cordless self-propelled lawn mower is any good and worth the investment, I would have said a resounding no! But in 2022, the battery and motor technology, and indeed, mower technology in general, has improved to such an extent that my answer now would be, most definitely "yes".  In this Hyundai HYM80LI460SP review you will see why cordless mowers, and in particular self-propelled cordless mowers, are now a real and viable alternative to petrol mowers.

Main Features

  • Those that like to have a longer warranty including the battery (3 Years).
  • People that like the option to side and rear discharge the grass cuttings.
  • Those that require the option to mulch the cuttings.
  • People that do NOT want a striped lawn effect.
  • Those who want the option of fast battery charge time (30 minutes) – Optional extra.
  • People who do not want the hassle of cords or petrol.
  • Those that require a larger grass collection box for less stops.

Conclusion

The Hyundai HYM80LI460SP is a mower that is at the top of its game. It is a diverse piece of equipment that will stand the test of time thanks to the powerful, long-lasting batteries and robust outer steel shell of the machine.

Mowing has never been more simple, and this is largely owing to the self-propelled drive of this piece of equipment but can also be attributed to the large grass collection bag, ample cutting width, variable cutting heights and options.

In terms of modern mowers, you won’t find anything quite as effective and impressive as this.

Pros
  • Self-propelled
  • 4 cutting options - cut and collect, mulching, side discharge and rear discharge.
  • Good run-time (up to 40 min)
  • Large grass box (65 litres)

It offers either a 36cm or 43cm cutting width with 7 cutting heights that range from 19mm to 70mm and has a rear roller for a striped lawn appearance. The AD model is self-propelled with a variable speed drive between 1.8mph and 2.5mph. This mower comes with a 3 year manufacturer's domestic warranty when serviced annually by an authorised Hayter dealer.

Before I get into the nitty gritty of the batteries for this battery powered lawn mower, I’d like to point out that you do need to purchase the batteries separately. Of course you can also buy the Hayter Hawk as a bare tool if you already have compatible batteries.

What’s great, however, is that you have a good number of options. There are four batteries to choose from; a 2.5Ah battery although this is only suitable for the 36 Push Hayter Hawk, 4.0Ah, 6.0Ah or 7.5Ah batteries which can be used across all of these tools. Moreover, each of these 60V batteries can be power shared with other tools in the Toro garden tool range.

You will need to choose your batteries in line with the size of your lawn. For example, the 4.0Ah battery will handle lawns up to 300 square metres, but Hayter states that it can be used on lawns up to 900m². However, I doubt that this is the case on a single charge even with its adaptable power boost function.

With this battery powered mower, you will need to purchase the battery charger separately, but again, you’ve got options. There is a standard charger which will fully boost the 7.5Ah battery in three hours and the 6.0Ah battery in 2.3 hours. This charger is also suitable for the 2.5Ah battery which it’ll recharge in as little as an hour!

Alternatively, you might opt for the fast charger. Naturally, this will cost a little more, but it comes with the advantage of being able to refill the 7.5Ah battery in just 66 minutes! The 6.0Ah battery will be ready to go again in just shy of an hour with the rapid charger.

Buying the batteries separately should be considered an investment and this can put some people off, but when you consider how efficient they are and that the 7.5Ah can handle up to 900 square metres, it’s an investment worth making.

Main Features

  • Choice of three mowers with cutting decks of 36cm or 43cm
  • Self-propelled or push options available

  • Rear roller
  • Vertical storage

Having spent some time looking at the Hayter Hawk, I can confidently say that this is an excellent piece of equipment. OK, your first thought might be how much? But once you realise what a great litter performer this is and how easy it makes maintaining your lawn, you’ll quickly understand why it’s worth the investment.

This mower comes with a 2 year manufacturer's domestic warranty when serviced annually by an authorised Hayter dealer.

Hayter is known for its high-quality equipment and the Hayter Osprey 46 60V cordless mower is no exception. If you have a mid-sized garden and want the power of petrol combined with the convenience of cordless then this is a machine well worth considering.

If all of that wasn’t enough, could the self-propelled drive be enough to tempt you? Or perhaps the power boost function that both saves energy and delivers just the right power for the conditions. There’s so much to love about this tool and in my Hayter Osprey 46 review, I’ll be taking you through a deep dive of the features. Let’s not waste any more time and get started.

The Hayter Osprey 46 60v cordless mower is a super convenient, powerful, and easy to use cordless mower that puts a lot of others to shame. I’ve been very impressed with it and despite some very minor flaws, it’s a lawn mower I have no qualms in recommending.

85The Hayter Harrier 41 VS 60V is a cordless lawn mower, powered by a 60v 6.0Ah battery that will provide enough runtime to cut a lawn up to 300m² (7.5Ah battery up to 600m² max). It has a 41cm cutting width and 7 cutting heights that range from 13mm to 60mm, has a rear roller for a striped lawn appearance and a variable speed drive between 1.0 and 3.3mph.

I recently talked about the Hayter Harrier 48 VS cordless mower which is a gigantic cordless lawnmower made for large gardens. But then I got to thinking; does this premium brand offer anything smaller for people with not such large lawns. I’m pleased to say that the answer to that question is yes! The Hayter Harrier 41 VS is great for gardens up to 600m² and aside from having a 1.5kw motor as opposed to the 2.0kw motor on the 48, the deck size is the only difference.

If you’re looking for a cordless lawn mower that will be a viable petrol alternative then I’d strongly recommend giving this one a chance. OK, it’s something of an investment but you’re paying for superior quality and a cut that’ll blow your socks off!

The main feature of this lawn mower is the heavy rear roller that gives lasting stripes and a wonderfully formal look to the lawn. But there are plenty of other things to get excited about, so let’s take a deep dive with my Hayter Harrier 41 VS review.

Main Features

  • 41cm aluminium cutting deck
  • Power Boost technology
  • Rear roller
  • 60V battery
  • 1.5kw DC motor
  • Leaf collection
  • Large 70 litre grass collection bag
  • 7 cutting heights from 13mm to 60mm
  • Variable speed
  • Folding handles
  • Hose wash port
  • 5 year warranty
  • 3 year battery warranty

This Mower Is Suitable For

  • People with gardens up to 600m2 in size (with 7.5Ah battery). Recommended for 300m2 lawns
  • People who do like a striped lawn.
  • Those who want a self-propelled variable speed drive.
  • Those that like to power share batteries with other garden tools.
  • People who want generous 7 cutting heights that range from 13mm to 60mm.
  • People who like to cut their lawn exceptionally low for formal appearance.
  • Those who like the convenience of having no power cord or have limited or no access to a power source in the garden.
  • People who like to purchase a trusted premium brand with good after sales support.

Conclusion

More and more manufacturers are throwing out cordless mowers and I have to say that some are shockingly inferior. But that is not the case with the Hayter Harrier 41 VS; this is a premium lawn mower that has a range of useful features that make maintaining your garden something of a joy.

The mower has variable speeds, a low cutting height, cuts to the edge of the lawn, a very effective rear roller and so much more. I can’t think of any reason why anyone wouldn’t love using this tool!

Pros
  • Self-propelled variable speed drive
  • Good range of 7 cutting heights from 13mm to 60mm
  • Low 13mm cutting height for a bowling green finish

88The Einhell GE-CM 36/47 S HW Li is an self-propelled cordless lawn mower weighing 31.3kg and is powered by two 4.0Ah Einhell 18v batteries (36v). It has a 47cm cutting blade, a huge 75 litre grass collection bag and is designed for medium lawns up to 700m².

One of the biggest gripes for a lot of people is that when it comes from switching to cordless after years of using a petrol mower, things just aren’t as powerful or effective. Until now, that is. If you’re looking for a cordless mower that boasts the power and features of a petrol model, then I think you’re going to be hugely impressed with the Einhell GE-CM 36/47.

With a simple push button start, 4-in-1 mowing options, variable speed rear wheel drive and a whole host of other things to get excited about, this is a mower that is incredible value for money. But what is most amazing about this tool is how easy it is to operate. Yes, it’ll give your lawn an excellent cut but with very little effort on your part. If you want something that’s going to do all the hard work, you’ll find it in this mower.

Main Features

  • 47cm cutting width
  • 6 cutting heights
  • 75 litre cloth grass collection bag with grips
  • 4-in-1 mowing functions
  • Suitable for gardens up to 700m²

  • 2 x dual chargers included
  • 90 minute charging time
  • Safety key
  • Vortex technology deck
  • 2 year warranty (3 years if registered within 30 days of purchase)

Conclusion

The Einhell GE-CM 36/47 S HW Li has to be one of the best lawn mowers I have looked at in a while in terms of having everything you need. Petrol mowers are powerful, but they’re no good for the environment and they require one heck of a lot of maintenance. By comparison, this cordless mower has many of the same features without the downsides. What’s not to love?

  • Self-propelled drive.

84The WORX WG749E is a self-propelled cordless lawn mower that is supplied with 2 x 4.0Ah batteries and charger that produces enough run-time to cut lawns up to 500m² . It has a 55 litre grass collection box, 46cm cutting width and has an excellent range of 7 cutting heights from 20mm to 80mm.

Having tested and reviewed WORX lawn mowers over the years, I was over the moon, to say the least, to hear that they were launching their first cordless self-propelled model for 2021. What’s more, this WORX WG749E cordless mower is not only self-propelled, but also offers variable speed. If you’ve never used a WORX tool before, then let me be the first to tell you that the quality and performance come highly recommended; not just by me but by millions of people around the world.

I personally use the smaller WORX WG779E.2 and would not have recommended any WORX mower for larger lawns, but with this WORX WG749E that could be about to change.

With the WG749E, you are getting an enormous amount of power in a surprisingly lightweight body and a very decent 46cm cutting width. Self-propelled cordless models are typically a little weightier, but this one handles beautifully. Moreover, it delivers an immaculate cut right up to the edge of the lawn.

For fans of the WORX range, you’ll be pleased to know that you’ll receive two 4.0Ah 18v batteries with this model that can be power shared, and a very convenient charging system. There is the option to mulch or cut and collect as well as 7, yes 7, cutting heights making this a rather diverse machine.

Main Features

  • 46cm cutting width
  • Self-propelled with variable speed
  • Ideal for larger lawns up to 500m²
  • Power shareable batteries
  • Brushless motor
  • 7 cutting heights – 20mm to 80mm
  • Mulching plug included
  • Safety key provided
  • Larger rear wheels for stability
  • Folding, lightweight handle
  • Up to 3 years warranty

Conclusion

I was a little more than excited to review this latest WG749E mower from WORX and I wasn’t disappointed. Being the brand’s very first self-propelled, variable speed cordless mower, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but they have surpassed themselves in terms of power, performance and convenience.

While there are not multiple collection modes, there is more than enough features for the average larger lawn and with an incredibly easy to use design, this is what the mower of the future ought to look like.

Just like the smaller WORX mower models, I can see this WORX WG749E cordless mower becoming a best seller and constantly selling out. So, if you can get your hands on one, I would do so ASAP. They can be pre ordered now or purchased after the release date in late June 2021.

Pros

82The Mountfield Empress 51 Li is an electric self-propelled cordless lawn mower weighing 29kg and is recommended to be powered by two 5.0Ah STIGA batteries. It has a 51cm cutting blade, a 60 litre grass collection bag and is designed for medium lawns up to 600m². There are 6 cutting heights available that range from 22mm to 80mm and the mower comes with a two year manufacturer's warranty that includes the batteries.

The ways in which you can mow with this self-propelled tool are endless. There are six easy to adjust cutting heights and a choice of four mowing modes. If it is versatility you are after, you won’t find much else quite as adept as the Empress 46 LI.

This lawn mower is ideally suited to larger gardens thanks to its generous 51cm cutting width. It will make light work of lawns up to 600m² but it certainly won’t be tiring work thanks to a compact and lightweight design that is fantastically easy to manoeuvre. If you would like to get to know this tool a little better, my Mountfield Empress 51 LI review will tell you all you need to know.

Main Features

  • 51cm cutting deck
  • 6 cutting heights
  • 4-in-1 cutting options - cut and collect, mulching, rear discharge & side discharge
  • 60-litre grass box

  • Self-propelled drive

Conclusion

I have been impressed by a lot of the Mountfield mowers in the past but this Mountfield Empress 51 LI really caught my attention and with so much to offer, it is little wonder. This is a robust, powerful and reliable piece of equipment that doesn’t scrimp on features. While it is missing a rear roller, has no foam on the handles and is a little tricky to fold the handles at the lower point, these are minor inconveniences when you think about everything else you are getting.

Once you have chosen your batteries and given them a charge, you’ll benefit from a nice running time and excellent operation and performance. For medium to large gardens, this is by far one of the best mowing tools on the market at the moment.

  • Self-propelled drive.

This lawn mower is ideally suited to larger gardens thanks to its generous 46cm cutting width. It will make light work of lawns up to 550m² but it certainly won’t be tiring work thanks to a compact and lightweight design that is fantastically easy to manoeuvre. If you would like to get to know this tool a little better, my Mountfield Empress 46 LI review will tell you all you need to know.

Main Features

  • 46cm cutting deck

I have been impressed by a lot of the Mountfield mowers in the past but this one really caught my attention and with so much to offer, it is little wonder.

85The Yard Force LM G46D Cordless Self-propelled Lawn Mower features a fast charging 40 volt 5.0Ah battery that provides around 40 minutes of run-time and is suitable for lawns up to 800m². The 7 height adjustments on the Yard Force can be set between 25mm and 75mm and comes supplied with a 55 litre grass box. The Yard Force LM G46D Cordless Rotary Lawn Mower is lightweight at just 33.5kg and has a 46cm cutting width.

The Yard Force LM G46D is a lawn mower that offers everything you need to maintain a luscious lawn in a compact and (relatively) lightweight package. New for 2021, this mower is the largest in an upgraded range from the brand, which also includes smaller models with a 34cm (Yard Force LM G34A ) and 37cm (Yard Force LM G37A) deck, respectively.

However, for larger lawns, this mighty machine has a lot to offer including a self-propelled drive for ease of movement and a huge cutting width of 46cm, which is ideal for lawns up to 800m². What’s more, it comes with a power system to be reckoned with including a brushless motor and a hefty 40v 5.0Ah battery.

If you are someone who likes a little diversity when it comes to cutting the grass, then this model will likely get your attention. The Yard Force LM G46D boasts a seriously impressive cut and collect system as well as the option for side discharge and mulching (3-in-1 cutting functions). If that wasn’t enough, then it also features seven cutting heights and a steel deck to add to its versatility. There’s really nothing that has been left out with this machine and for a cordless, it could be one of the mowers that seriously rivals more robust petrol models.

Main Features

  • Self-propelled drive
  • 3-in-1 cutting options including mulching and side discharge
  • 46cm cutting width
  • Seven cutting heights, centrally adjusted
  • Rapid charging
  • Powerful 40v 5.0Ah battery that is compatible with other tools in the GR40 range
  • BoostX function for optimal power
  • Vertical storage and soft grip folding handle
  • 55 litre hybrid grass box

Conclusion

The Yard Force LM G46D is a rather impressive little lawn mower. And I use the term little lightly since, while this is a compact and easy to store machine, it certainly thinks big in terms of power. With a 5.0Ah battery, you get a better running time and even when the power runs out, you won’t have to wait an age for it to recharge. Couple this with the battery’s ability to power share and you’ve got something rather innovative. The quiet operation of the brushless motor, the efficiency of the self-propelled drive and the choice of 3-in-1 cutting features make this a pleasure to use. In fact, I found it incredibly difficult to pick out anything that I didn’t like about this lawn mower.

Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mowers Buyers Guide

Introduction

A cordless self-propelled lawn mower is an excellent option for people who have larger lawns and want the ease of not having to manually push along a traditional mower. They give you the freedom to get more work done without over-exerting yourself.

These pieces of garden equipment are ideally suited to older people who struggle to use a manual mower or those with mobility issues. However, even able-bodied people will find these mowers extremely advantageous when navigating sloped or rougher lawns.

Of course, thanks to the cordless design, you are not tethered to a power point, giving you the freedom to move around the garden with even more ease.

Since these models are in a higher price bracket, it pays to look at the features in order to make the best decision for your requirements and circumstances.

  • Modern, powerful batteries give you better run time.
  • Variable speed models are also available.

  • Self-propulsion reduces the battery run time.

What Is A Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mower?

In the main, there are two power options for push lawn mowers – electric or petrol and when we look at the electric option, you have the choice of a corded machine or a battery-operated one (cordless).

Cordless self-propelled lawn mowers come into the latter category and are powered by using a rechargeable battery. These batteries are measured in Ah (amp hours), and the higher the number, the more money you are going to have to part with. That being said combined with the voltage, you’ll also be getting something more powerful, so it does pay to consider this carefully.

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

As with any product, there are some good and bad points about owning this type of equipment – let’s explore these in a little more detail.

Using a mower that falls within this category will give you the freedom to tackle your lawn much more easily. Furthermore, you won’t be needing to battle the cables or work too hard since the mower will do most of the work for you.

Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mower AdvantagesAdvantages

Let’s take a look at some of the best advantages of owning a cordless self-propelled lawn mower.

  • No Cables

One of the clearest and obvious advantages of this type of equipment is the lack of cables, this makes the machine much easier to manoeuvre since you are not tied up to a single power point.

I’m sure you have found yourself in the situation of throwing a wire over your head to change directions and to avoid cutting the power cable, but this isn’t an issue you will ever experience with a cordless mower.

  • No Physical Exertion

Mowing the lawn can be a strenuous task, especially if you have limited strength, mobility or simply want to make a light work of the job, as using a self-propelled model takes out all of the physical labour of the task. All you are required to do is simply guide the mower along.

  • Better Than Petrol
Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Power

In days gone by, people were reluctant to switch to a battery-powered lawn mower, especially if they have been using a traditional petrol mower. The original batteries in these machines left a lot to be desired and this is a stigma that has remained with mowers in this category.

However, as technology has improved, so too have the batteries used in cordless mowers and they are now a real alternative to their petrol counterparts. Many higher end cordless mower are competing with petrol in terms of power, however cordless mowers require significantly less maintenance when compared to petrol. All cordless mowers use lithium-ion batteries which in modern times are considered to be one of the best battery types providing longer run times and faster charge times.

Additionally, since the earlier powered mowers were not self-propelled, they were not as good as the petrol versions and this was another point of contention amongst garden enthusiasts, with many arguing that a battery-powered option would never match up.

But the advent of self-propelled mowers arrived and now many gardeners prefer this type of equipment thanks to its ease of use.

  • Eco-Friendly

Petrol mowers are great but there’s no denying that the fumes and damage to the environment are very real. All of this is eliminated when using a cordless self-propelled mower.

For further eco friendly benefits you can opt for cordless mulching mowers, that will reduce your waste and will bring benefits to the health of your lawn.

  • Quiet Operation

Petrol lawn mowers are notoriously noisy and this can be a nuisance for your neighbours as well as an interruption to the peace and tranquillity of your outdoor space. However, a cordless self-propelled mower operates at a much lower decibel, meaning these interruptions are minimal. Furthermore, these machines do not vibrate anywhere near as much, which contribute to the quieter operation and makes for a more pleasant user experience.

Disadvantages

Now we will take a look at some of the disadvantages of this type of equipment.

  • Higher Price

Owing to the technology that is required to craft these lawn mowers, there is a higher price tag when compared to a corded version. Petrol mowers are comparable in price, but with a cordless option, you are getting convenience over power.

It is also important to remember that over time, you will need to purchase replacement batteries, which can be quite pricey. That being said, thanks to the low maintenance nature of these mowers, you will save on the cost of petrol, spark plugs, oil and other things that petrol mowers frequently require.

Another great feature of a cordless lawn mower, that mitigates the cost of the battery, is the ability to share the battery across multiple garden tools from the same manufacturer. You can often purchase battery powered garden tools without the battery (bare tool). This is particularly useful if you are looking to complement your cordless lawn mower with a cordless grass trimmer, again from the same manufacturer, as only 1 battery is then required.

  • Less Power Than A Petrol Mower
Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Speed

Petrol lawn mowers are always going to have more in terms of power – this is simply in their nature, but the modern battery cordless mowers do have a very competitive rate of power and should not be sniffed at. An example of this is the EGO LM1701E.

For people who keep on top of their lawn mowing, a cordless option will work well, but if you are attempting to cut wet or long grass, it might be a little more problematic.

  • No Control Over Speed

Self-propelled mowers are often set to run at a particular speed so you are required to go along with this.

If you are a person who likes to have complete control over the task at hand, you may not get along well with this type of equipment. However, the good news is that there are some models that do feature adjustable speed, but you will likely have to invest slightly more for this option.

Things To Consider When Purchasing A Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

Before making any type of purchase, it is crucial that you consider a few things and buying a cordless self-propelled mower is no different.

The size of the lawn will play a very important role in making a decision on whether to go for a cordless self-propelled mower. Whilst these are nifty little machines, their shorter battery span means that they won’t be suitable for very large lawns, unless, of course, you don’t mind waiting for the battery to charge and going back to the job later. Or of course you may have a spare battery at hand to use. A normal battery-operated lawn mower will give you between 30-60 minutes of juice per charge. If you have a small or medium-sized lawn, this will be ideal. Also higher end models, with battery combinations of 56v 7.5Ah for example, are available that will deal quite nicely with larger lawns, but this will come at a price.

How you want the lawn to look is also something else to think about. Some people like to have a striped lawn and in order to achieve this, a rear roller is required. Whilst some cordless self-propelled mowers have this option, not all do so it is worth checking first.

What type of lawn grass you have should be considered since thicker, rougher grass such as Annual Meadow Grass, may require the power that only a petrol mower or very powerful cordless battery mower can offer. This is particularly true if you are not going to keep up with a regular lawn mowing schedule.

What To Look For In A Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

If you have come to the decision that a cordless self-propelled lawn mower is the right option for you, then there are some things that you should keep an eye out for when making a purchase.

Weight

Self-propelled lawn mowers are generally much easier to operate since they take the hard work out of cutting the grass, but this doesn’t mean that their weight should be ignored.

As a rule, these mowers tend to be much lighter than their petrol cousins thanks to the lack of a bulky engine, but it is important to check the weight, especially if you are looking to purchase one to make mowing the lawn easier on you physically.

Self-Propelled and Variable Speed Options

As I mentioned earlier, many models come with one speed, but there are some that allow you to adjust this with a variable speed option. This will ensure that you mow at the pace that best suits you and the job at hand. How you want to use the mower will determine the best option for you.

Additionally, you should check whether the mower has a self-propulsion lever – if it does, this will give you the option to turn off this feature so that you regain control over the mower.

This is great for power-saving since using the self-propulsion will require more battery power. Most people find that engaging the self-propulsion option for steep inclines or rougher terrain is enough and disengaging for flat, even ground works well.

Battery Life

Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Battery

I have already touched on the fact that the higher Ah number the battery has and combined with the voltage, the more powerful it is and the longer it will run. If you require a longer run time, you should look for, in general, a higher Ah rating.

Furthermore, if you are planning to use the self-propelled option regularly, you may wish to consider getting a more powerful battery, or at least have a replacement so you can have one on charge whilst the other is in use. Turning the self-propulsion off, when not required, will improve the life of the battery.

Finally, you should look at how long the batteries take to charge. There are a lot of self-propelled mowers out there with exceptional charging times, some as little as 30 minutes with a fast charger, meaning that you can get on with the job much more quickly.

Before purchasing check if your mower is supplied with a fast charger or at least you have the option to purchase one at a later date.

Some models also allow you to charge more quickly up to 80% capacity, again a very handy feature if you need that little extra to finish the lawn.

It is also worth looking at whether or not the battery that comes supplied with your cordless lawn mower is power share, meaning it can be used across a range of other garden tools from the same manufacturer.

Just remember that a battery will not last forever. Ensure that replacements can be purchased, as if not it will render the mower useless.

Cutting Height And Width

Most modern lawn mowers have a good range of adjustable cutting heights, normally from 20mm to 70mm, but it is worth checking what the extremes are and how much leeway you are given between each height. It is always advisable with all lawn mowers not to cut more than 1/3 of the length of the grass blades. If you have to cut the lawn shorter, start at a higher setting and work your way down gradually.

What’s more, depending on the size of your lawn, you will want to choose a cutting width that works well for your garden. Remember, the wider the cutting width the more grass will be cut on each pass, allowing you to cut more on a single charge. Just ensure you have enough storage space for this wider mower. There are many cordless self-propelled models with a variety of cutting widths to accommodate all needs, and some even have the ability to be stored vertically, should storage be an issue. Use the filters above to narrow down your selection to include any of the features mentioned.

Conclusion

A cordless self-propelled lawn mower is a modern invention that can make cutting the grass so much easier, however, it is important to keep in mind that in some cases, a petrol option may work better. For example, for thicker and neglected lawns or very large areas.

A cordless self-propelled mower should be a real and genuine consideration for your garden, as the advancement in recent lawn mower and battery technology now make them a real viable option. You can see the power and performance in action in my video below, where I reviewed the latest EGO self-propelled cordless lawn mower.

Many die hard petrol lawn mower users in the US, are now switching from their beloved petrol mowers to cordless battery mowers due to all the advantages and features mentioned above.

Self-Propelled Cordless Lawn Mower FAQs

Can You Back Up (Reverse) A Self-Propelled Lawn Mower?

No, the majority of self-propelled cordless lawn mowers are not designed to go backwards when the power is on. If you disengage the self-propelled drive, mowers with this feature will allow you to pull the mower backwards.

How Does A Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Work?

Self-propelled lawn mowers have a drive system that is controlled using a secondary bar or lever on the mower handle. When you squeeze this, the mower engages its drive and the machine begins to move forwards, using its own power. The only thing that you need to do is guide the mower where you want it to go. Most cordless lawn mowers will allow you to engage the drive even when the blades are not running. This is handy, when you are moving the mower to and from its storage location.

Do You Need A Self-Propelled Lawn Mower?

A self-propelled lawn mower is a good choice for people whose garden is on a slope, or which features several hilly areas. This prevents you from having to use your own strength to push the mower over the tricky terrain. They’re also excellent for people with generally limited strength regardless of the terrain. Self-propelled cordless lawn mowers also tend to be better suited to larger lawns as these require even more physical effort.

How Long Should A Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Last?

A good quality self-propelled lawn mower may last up to ten years when properly taken care of, but it’s unlikely that your battery will last this long. You may find that you need to replace your battery every few years; typically, they’ll last up to 500 charges.

How Fast Does A Cordless Self-Propelled Mower Go?

The speed of your cordless self-propelled mower will depend on the make and model. Generally speaking, they’ll go between three and four miles per hour, but many models have variable speed which means you can adjust the pace to your own walking speed.

Which Is The Best Self-Propelled Cordless Lawn Mower?

There are lots of excellent brands offering cordless self-propelled mowers and what is best for you will depend on your budget as well as what other features you need. Some of the best manufacturers of cordless self-propelled lawn mowers are Hayter, EGO, Mountfield, Greenworks, Einhell and Hyundai.

How Much Is A Self-Propelled Cordless Lawn Mower?

The price you pay for your self-propelled cordless lawn mower will depend on the brand, the batteries supplied and what else the mower can do. For the most part, you will be able to pick up a decent self-propelled cordless mower for between £300 and £500. However, there are some extremely high-end models that come in nearer to the thousand-pound mark.

Is A Self-Propelled Cordless Mower Worth It?

If you want an easy and manageable way to mow your lawn that doesn’t require any effort from yourself, then a self-propelled cordless lawn mower is certainly worth considering. You’ll find it much easier to cut through dense grass and move over sloped ground without exerting yourself. Just remember, that you will pay more for a self-propelled model and they will also be somewhat heavier.

Is It OK To Push A Self-Propelled Mower?

Giving your cordless self-propelled mower a little push is unlikely to do it much harm, but you may find it’s quite difficult to do. The concept of these machines is that they will operate themselves, so why would you want to push it in the first place? Some models will allow you to disengage the drive completely, and therefore allow you to push and pull the mower freely.

What’s The Difference Between Self-Propelled And Hand Propelled?

If you’re looking for a cordless mower, it’s important to know the difference between certain features. Self-propelled cordless mowers use a mechanism that automatically moves them forwards making it easier for you to mow. On the other hand, a manual, or hand propelled mower requires the user to push it around the garden which is more tiring and requires more physical effort.

Are Self-Propelled Cordless Mowers Easy To Use?

The great thing about a self-propelled cordless mower is that it is very user friendly. Not only does it do most of the work for you, but it’ll also usually have larger rear wheels which make it more stable and easy to steer, especially around obstacles.

Are Self-Propelled Cordless Mowers As Good As Petrol?

Advancements in battery technology means that self-propelled cordless mowers now rival their petrol counterparts. While it is true the run-time of a cordless model will be less than that of a petrol mower, this can be outweighed by the benefits cordless has to offer. These benefits include, lower maintenance and on-going costs, easier to start, cleaner and safer to use, less noise and the ability to share the batteries across a range of tools from the same manufacturer. If you are planning on using your lawn mower for commercial purposes, then a petrol mower would be recommended over a cordless model.

How Do You Maintain A Self-Propelled Cordless Lawn Mower?

Self-propelled cordless lawn mowers are super easy to take care of. There’s no oil changes, engine maintenance or fuel to think about, so all you really need to do is make sure that the mower is kept clean and check bolts and screws to ensure they’re tight. You should also make sure that the battery is stored at an ambient temperature and isn’t exposed to extremes.
