Summary
The Hayter Osprey 46 is a cordless lawn mower, powered by a 60v 6.0Ah battery that will provide enough runtime to cut a large lawn up to 500m² (7.5Ah battery up to 900m2). It has a 46cm cutting width and 7 cutting heights ranging from 25mm to 70mm and a variable speed drive between 1.9 and 2.2mph. This mower comes with a 2 year manufacturer’s domestic warranty when serviced annually by an authorised Hayter dealer.
Hayter is known for its high-quality equipment and the Hayter Osprey 46 60V cordless mower is no exception. If you have a large sized garden and want the power of petrol combined with the convenience of cordless, then this is a machine well worth considering.
With a 46cm steel deck, seven cutting heights and a choice of mowing modes, you’re getting a good degree of versatility. On top of this, the Hayter Osprey 46 is beautifully easy to use with a push button start and a quick release grass collection bag.
If all of that wasn’t enough, could the self-propelled drive be enough to tempt you? Or perhaps the “power boost” function that both saves energy and delivers just the right power for the conditions. There’s so much to love about this cordless tool and in my Hayter Osprey 46 review, I’ll be taking you through a deep dive of all the features. Let’s not waste any more time and get started.

Features In Detail
Power System and Batteries
Many people are still under the impression that a cordless lawn mower couldn’t possibly rival the power of a petrol mower. But Hayter changes all of that with the Hayter Osprey 46 which boasts the power of a small petrol engine.
Running on a smooth brushless motor and a 60v battery, you’ve got something that is going to offer up an amazing performance. What’s more, you’ve got choices when it comes to the battery. The Hayter Osprey 46 is available with either a 2.5Ah, 6.0Ah or 7.5Ah battery. That said, I wouldn’t recommend going for the 2.5Ah. While this might be more affordable, it doesn’t have the get up and go or runtime to match the needs of a 500 square metre lawn.
What is great about the batteries is that they can be power shared with other tools in the Hayter range. So, if you already have a stack of these, you can simply buy the bare tool. The batteries used to power this range of Hayter cordless mowers are also compatible with Toro’s Flex-Force Power System, again adding even more flexibility to this mower.
The Hayter Osprey 46 is supplied with a battery charger that will refill the battery with juice in around three hours. Honestly, there are quicker chargers out there, but this one benefits from excellent battery care and will charge to give the battery the longest service life. What’s more, your battery comes with a three year warranty which is a nice touch. You could opt to purchase the 5.5Amp fast charger that will reduce the charge time by around 35-40%, but this will set you back an additional £80 to £90.
Deck and Blade
I mentioned earlier that Hayter is known for producing high quality equipment, so when you learn about the steel deck on the Hayter Osprey 46, that’s easy to see. While steel does make this mower a little heavier at 29kg without the battery, it is far more durable. If you have a slightly more rugged garden, it’ll easily withstand the challenges of this.
Having a steel deck, just like its petrol counterparts, allows this mower to have the added benefit of a hose wash port. Simply connect your garden hose to the deck, run the mower’s blade and watch the mower clean itself in no time.
Cutting Diameter
The Hayter Osprey 46 is suitable for medium to large sized lawns that measure up to 500 square metres. The 46cm cutting deck is perfectly suited to this. What’s more, the lawn mower is designed to easily move around obstacles such as trees and posts.
Handles
Everything about the Hayter Osprey 46 60V cordless offers convenience and that is certainly the case where the handles are concerned. The padded handles, the OPC and clutch bar are all similar to those of a petrol mower and the speed control is also within easy reach.
Furthermore, the handles will fold down, lessening the profile of the mower and therefore, making it easier to store.
Height Adjustment
Having a good selection of cutting heights is imperative in getting your lawn just how you like it, especially at different times during the mowing season. It’s good news then, that the Hayter Osprey 46 comes with a choice of seven cutting heights ranging between 25mm and 70mm.
These cutting heights can be altered using a simple hand lever which is quick and convenient. But what’s really special about this mower is that by setting the cutting height just a little higher than the length of your lawn, the Hayter Osprey 46 will make light work of removing leaves; talk about multifunctional!
Roller (Stripes)
There is no rear roller on this Hayter Osprey 46 60V. If you are looking for a Hayter cordless mower with a rear roller for a stripped lawn appearance, then you may want to consider the Hayter Harrier 48 VS.
Grass Collection Bag
The Hayter Osprey 46 comes with a 55 litre grass collection bag, which has a handy feature that allows you to lift it from and through the handlebar. This is far easier and less stressful, especially when you find yourself having to empty the grass box more often, for example, when the grass is longer at the start of the season.
It’s a fabric grass box which does mean it is a little less durable. But on the plus side, it’s far easier to store and the airflow and collection is superior.
If you don’t want to go with the cut and collect option, then there’s always the rear discharge method so there’s a little versatility in this mower. Although I was disappointed at the lack of a mulching plug.
Performance
The Hayter Osprey 46 cordless mower performs exceptionally well and one of the first things that jumped out at me was the Power Boost tech. This automatically adjusts the power based on the lawn conditions. It’ll give it a much needed boost when on uneven or rugged ground, but will turn it down when things are smoother. This not only makes mowing much easier but also saves energy and improved runtime. You do have the option to manually switch to permanent Power Boost mode, this is particularly useful when you know the entire job will be tough going.
You’ll also benefit from the Hayter Osprey 46’s self-propelled drive which just makes mowing easier all around. It features adjustable speeds between 1.9mph and 2.2mph. That’s a little slower than the average walking speed, but it allows you greater control while mowing.
Practicalities
I love that the Hayter Osprey 46 60V cordless mower comes with a good amount of features that make it very practical and easy to use. For example, there’s a hose wash port which makes cleaning the mower super simple and you won’t need to worry about putting in any graft after you’ve just mowed the lawn. This isn’t a feature you would usually see on a cordless mower, so the fact that Hayter has added it is quite the innovation.
Furthermore, this lawn mower benefits from a push button start. If you’ve moved over from using a petrol mower with a pull start, then this will surely be a gamechanger for you. What’s more, with no fumes, low noise and maintenance, it’s far more eco-friendly than your old petrol machine!
Mulching
This feature is not available on this model which is somewhat of a shame. You do have the option to rear discharge the grass cuttings in addition to cut and collect.

Pros and Cons
As I said earlier, there are many advantages to this lawn mower but there are a few downsides. Let me explain both so you know what you are getting and if this is the best option for you.
Should You Buy This Hayter Osprey 46 Cordless Mower?
Are you looking to change to a cordless mower without losing the power and performance of your current petrol model? If your answer is yes, then I’d highly recommend the Hayter Osprey 46. It’s got everything you’d expect from a petrol mower without the emissions, noise and complicated use or maintenance.
What’s more, I think this is a great choice for people who have a larger sized lawn that’s a little more rough and ready than a perfectly manicured garden. With self-propelled variable speed drive and power boost technology, this lawn mower will handle a variety of conditions with ease.
The Hayter Osprey 46 Cordless Mower is best suited for:
- People with lawns up to 900m2 in size (with 7.5Ah battery). Recommended for 500m2 lawns with standard 6.0Ah battery.
- Those who want a cordless self-propelled variable speed drive.
- Those that like to power share batteries with other Hayter garden tools and Toro’s Flex-Force Power System.
- People who want generous 7 cutting heights that range from 25mm to 70mm.
- Those that want a petrol alterative and do not want to store oil and fuel.
- People that do NOT want to create a stripped lawn appearance.
- Those who like the convenience of having no power cord or have limited or no access to a power source in the garden.
- People who like to purchase a trusted premium brand with good after sales support.
Conclusion
Hayter lawn mowers are typically a little more expensive than other brands, but this price is reflected in both the quality and performance of these machines. The Hayter Osprey 46 60v cordless mower is a super convenient, powerful, and easy to use cordless mower that puts a lot of others to shame. I’ve been very impressed with it and despite some very minor flaws, it’s a lawn mower I have no qualms in recommending.
