Hover Mowers: A Buyers Guide

Hover mowers demonstrate an interesting approach to removing as many moving parts from the lawn mower as possible. Rather than the machine running on fixed or swivel casters, a fan develops a high-pressure cushion area under the deck of the mower, so essentially the mower is floating on air.

The video below demonstrates how a hover mower works, and its advantages.

Main Characteristics of Hover Mowers

  • They hover so are extremely manoeuvrable.
  • Hover mowers can be moved in any direction.
  • Ideal for sloped lawns due to less force needed to push/pull.
  • They are normally lighter in weight compared to their wheeled electric, petrol or battery counterparts.
  • Electric hover mowers produce low noise levels.
  • They have low resistance to travel due to the hovering on cushion of air, therefore effort is minimal.
  • They work well on lawns with obstacles that need to be navigated around.

Best Hover MowerPower

As the older style electric hover mowers did not have grass collection bags, they only needed enough power to move the blade. As hover lawn mowers have progressed, the efficiency of the motors has developed with them, as they now produce a lot more torque for the same power.

Manufacturers of hover mowers have a better understanding of the typical size and type of gardens their customers have. Companies like Flymo made their adjustments to develop an economical machine. A lighter motor makes it float better and easier to hang the unit in a garage. The greater the torque, the better the cutting power and ability to collect and compact the grass clippings. And if the motor is stronger, it can perform these functions of vacuuming up grass and pressing it into the collection box as well as, if not better than its wheeled competitors.

Power cables are unavoidable when it comes to an electric hover mower. A petrol engine with its fuel tank weighs a considerable amount more than an electric motor, and lithium-ion batteries are still expensive.

When choosing a corded mower, it is important to look at the quality of the cable, making sure that it is double insulated, preferably shielded. And a longer cord is not always better. A long cord is more likely to get twisted and/or caught in a blade. It is therefore essential that a safety circuit breaker is always used for your protection.

Blades

Blade technology has come a long way over the years, from using regular steel to plastic. Plastic blades do work, but only on short and thin grass. For an overgrown lawn, you will want steel blades that can hack through thick weeds.

A plastic blade is fine for a short duration, and replacements are inexpensive, but a steel blade will last longer and can be sharpened. New steel blade types are hardened and coated to improve their durability. So, you have to consider the lawn you will be cutting and decide if economizing on a plastic blade is suitable for you, as you are more likely to be replacing it frequently.

Cutting diameters of electric hover mowers tend to be smaller than those of traditional machines. The blade is one of the heaviest components, and a bigger blade means a bigger motor. It is unusual to find a blade diameter beyond 40 centimetres.

The hover mowers are ideal for manoeuvring around small tight gardens, and not for cutting miles of grass in a straight line. They can be moved easily in any direction and are ideal for lawns that have inclines or obstacles to be manoeuvred around.

Hover Mowers Height Adjustment

Under the lifting fan is the cutting blade, and as with all mowers, this height is adjustable. To ensure that hover mowers are light enough to float above the grass, manufacturers do away with complexities that add additional weight such as the height adjustment mechanism.

Hover movers tend to use spacers between the blade and the fan. Hover mowers should be provided with a tool to undo the bolt that attaches the blade, and a splitter to help separate the spacers from one another.

Below is a video that shows you the process of adjusting the height on a typical hover mower –

Striping is another unlikely addition to a hover mower; due to the weight, it would add. A roller is easy to use in a straight line but not the tight curves of a small lawn. A hover mower does add a level of grass striping, but you should not expect the full roller effect.

Grass Boxes

Earlier hover models just forced the cut grass out from under the lip and across the lawn. Modern versions of hover mowers now have the option of integrated grass collection bag within the main body, and have improved blades that require less passes.

Most hover mowers will not mulch, but due to the way they function and fan the cuttings through the blades. They do however cut the clippings small in order to reduce the space taken up in the grass collection box.

Hover Mower Practicalities

Hover mowers are lightweight and simple to operate; they offer the flexibility of storage that a petrol mower cannot. An electric hover mover can hang at any angle without leaking oil and they are fast to set up. It is a question of economising on time, and a hover mower is very fast to set up, even after months in storage.

A petrol mower needs continual maintenance and refuelling; it has many more working parts and more to replace. A hover mower is much quieter and cleaner to run than their petrol cousins.

Hover Mower Safety

Hover MowersElectric hover movers do not have as many safety features as petrol mowers. There are safety switches to allow the controllers to activate the throttles, but that is about it. The consensus with any machine of this type is to unplug it before you turn it over for cleaning or height adjustment.

Make sure that the blade nut is done up tight and that it is plugged into a proper wall socket with a residual circuit breaker. Electric lawn mowers tend to have surge protectors to protect the motor.

Even though hover mowers float, they will still cut the wire. It is better to trail the power cord behind the machine and always guide the electric cable round the garden, so it doesn’t get caught.

Pros

  • Lightweight and easy to manoeuvre as travels on cushion of air
  • Good value
  • Suitable for small to medium sized gardens
  • Easy to store
  • Economical to run and maintain
  • Simple to operate

Cons

  • Do not create an attractive striped lawn effect

Are Hover Mowers Better?

It is indisputable that an electric corded mower is a lot more efficient and greener than a petrol mower. Electric corded hover mowers do not need a degree in mechanics to get them up and running, and they are easy to maintain.

Hover mowers have a small cutting footprint, and because of the hover, it can take a few passes over the same area to get all the grass cut. It is worth spending the time looking at whether your garden is too big to make buying a hover mower a consideration.

If mobility or strength is an issue for the operator then a hover mower can be a real solution. The cushion of air reduces the friction between the mower and the lawn making it easier than a wheeled mower to manoeuvre. Having said that, the idea of a hover mower is to swing it from side to side as well as backward and forward, by its very nature “swinging” side to side is going to be harder to perform for less abled operators. You can always push the hover mower backward and forward like a traditional wheeled mower, this will be easier due to the cushion of air.

Choosing the correct lawn mower may seem like a daunting task with so many different options to consider. It’s impossible to say which is the right choice for you as it depends on so many personal preferences and lawn situations. Having an understanding of the different options available will help you make an informed decision as to which type of lawn mower is best for you and your lawn. To help you understand these option I have produced a free guide called “A Helpful Guide to Buying a Lawn Mower” that can be accessed here – A Helpful Guide to Buying a Lawn Mower.

More Details

One in a line of three hover lawn mowers, the Flymo SimpliGlide 300 is the smallest in the collection. What’s more, thanks to a lengthy power cable, you will be able to whip around the garden without restriction.

This ease of use is further backed by excellent maneuverability. Floating on a cushion of air and with a lightweight design, the Flymo SimpliGlide 300 moves around your garden effortlessly. This takes a lot of the hassle out of maintaining your lawn.

This lawn mower isn’t bursting with the number of features you might expect from a more complex machine, but it certainly has more than enough to meet the needs of the average homeowner looking to keep their garden neat and tidy.

In my Flymo SimpliGlide 300 review, I’ll be giving you a closer look at some of the features and showing you why this lawn mower might be perfect for you.

While it might not come with a whole host of complex features, it brings you more than enough to get your everyday gardening done without a fuss. What’s more, it has some features that even the most high-end mowers can’t lay claim to such as a low 10mm cutting height.

Summary

The Flymo’s SimpliGlide 330 is an electric hover lawn mower with a 33cm cutting width and foldable handles for reduced storage. It has a 1700w motor, 4 cutting heights ranging from 10mm to 30mm and weighs just 7.3kg.

More Details

There are 3 varying SimpliGlide models in the range. The Flymo SimpliGlide 330 is the big brother to that of the SimpliGlide 300 and offers the same 1700w motor but a larger 33cm deck. There is also a larger model, the Flymo SimpliGlide 360 with a larger 1800w motor and 36cm cutting width.

In terms of convenience and ease of use, there aren’t many lawn mowers that are as well equipped as the Flymo SimpliGlide 330. Now, I’ll be upfront from the beginning, this isn’t a mower that comes with a massive range of features. This is a simple lawn mower that is ideal for anyone looking for something hassle-free to just get the lawn cut.

The Flymo SimpliGlide 330 has a 33cm cutting deck and a powerful metal blade that is perfect for dense or thick grass. It is powered by a 1700 watt motor which gives it some real welly, even on sloped or uneven lawns.

The four cutting heights give you just enough for most domestic situations and with a low of 10mm, this is one of the best mowers if you want a really close cut. It’s beautifully easy to manoeuvre and when it comes to storage, the mower has some pretty handy features. I will be looking at these features and many more in my Flymo SimpliGlide 330 review, so let’s get cracking.

Main Features

  • 33cm cutting width
  • 4 cutting heights from 10mm to 30mm
  • Foldable handle
  • Lightweight at only 7.3kg
  • Front wheels for easy transportation
  • Dual lever operation
  • 1700 watt motor

Conclusion

I was really impressed with the Flymo SimpliGlide 330 despite it being one of the more simple lawn mowers on the market. It doesn’t come with any frills but it will give your grass a clean cut and you won’t have to break your back whilst doing it.

The mower is lightweight and easy to use. While it only has four cutting heights and no grass collection box, this doesn’t matter if you want something for everyday domestic use.

Flymo is a well-known brand that is under the Husqvarna umbrella. This instantly lets you know that you will be getting an excellent quality product and the SimpliGlide 360 is a nice little machine. While it isn’t all singing, all dancing, it is the ideal lawn mower for getting outside and quickly cutting the grass before getting on with your day.

It features four cutting heights and always delivers the clippings back to the grass; there isn’t a grass collection box, so you’re not spoilt for choice. However, you’ve got enough there to meet basic domestic needs, which is something that appeals to a lot of homeowners.

Moreover, this is a lawn mower that handles beautifully, so if you want something that isn’t going to feel cumbersome and awkward, this is definitely a model worth considering. There’s quite a lot of other attractive features and in my Flymo SimpliGlide 360 review, I’ll be covering all of them.

This mower is extremely light at only 5kg, combine this with the Flymo air cushion and the fact that there is no grass box and you really can mow your lawn very quickly and will tackle the most neglected lawn without any challenges.

This mower will easily hang on a bracket on your shed or garage wall due to it being so lightweight and compact. The 10 metre cable is adequate for a smaller lawn and is standard for a mower of this size.

Conclusion

Flymo is more about giving the operator something that is easy to use. An owner of a Flymo is someone that does not want to spend hours getting their mower running after months in winter storage. This mower is ready to go the moment it is plugged in, and there is comfort in knowing that fact.

The rest of the Flymo Hover Vac 250 is simple, and the blades are easy and cheap to replace. The only issue with this model is the size of the blade and the fact that Flymo’s needs more than one pass to cut a patch of grass.

The final decision on whether to buy the mower may be more to do with where it will live. If you have the indulgence of a big garage, you may as well purchase one of the 250’s bigger brothers such as the Flymo Hover Vac 280 or even the large Flymo Easi Glide 330VX models. If you want to put it up on a storage rack or even in the attic, then the Flymo Hover Vac 250 is going to be the best choice.

More Details

This is the updated version of the Easi Glide 300, designed for small lawns with a few improvements to efficiency. The motor is the same power (1300-Watt) as is the noise production, but Flymo has managed to shave 400 grams of the final weight.

  • People that like a trusted and well supported brand - Flymo.
  • Those that require a mower that collects and compacts the grass clippings.

Conclusion

It would seem counter intuitive to release an updated version of a mower with shorter blades. But then the length is not everything, and with the compromise of a smaller blade, Flymo has made a much stronger blade.

A shorter blade also pledges greater reliability in speed and a decrease in the chance of an off-balance blade. If you are a tall person contemplating this machine, it may be worth looking towards one of the other machines. Unless you are willing to slouch over the mower for short periods of time.

In summary, this is a great hover mower that costs well under £100. It has features that will make cutting your lawn a breeze as opposed to paying for features that are gimmicks and will never be used. This Flymo Hover Vac 280 will be the mower you have for many years, it’s so simply to use and just gets the job done with minimal fuss and effort. Remember this is a trusted Flymo, they have been in the hover mower business for decades and really do know  how to make a functional, well-built and good value hover mower. Conclusion

If the aim is to keep a small lawn in check, then this is the perfect machine. It is small enough to live in a small box in the garden or even under the stairwell. The 330VX is clean and quiet, with few moving parts.

Taller operators may find it little uncomfortable to use this mower for longer periods as the handlebars cannot be extended. This is standard across most mowers at this price point and means that the operator may find themselves bending over the machine to push it.

Another great feature of this Flymo EasiGlide 330VX is the rate at which it compacts the grass clippings into its 20 litre grass collection box. This helps to reduce the number of stops and trips needed to be made to the compost bin.

In summary, this is a fantastic  hover mower that is not going to break the bank. It has features that will make cutting your lawn a breeze as opposed to paying for features that are gimmicks and will never be used. It is a lightweight hover mower at just 8.2kg and is simple to use, and there are very few parts, so there is minimum maintenance. Conclusion

For those with a smaller lawn, this Flymo EasiGlide 300 is a perfect machine. Some people will be glad to sacrifice extras, for something like this that will cut the lawn, and that is it. If so, a small grass bin is not an issue either. If lifting strength is an issue, a small box is an advantage as well.

The blade is flat and potentially easy to sharpen, but replacement blades are so inexpensive that it would not be worth the effort. The biggest issue for those with uneven gardens is the lack of a height adjustment lever and having to take the blade off to add spacers, however, as already mentioned, once you’ve found the optimum height for your lawn, your are more than likely to leave it set at that.

The reduction of parts has kept the price and weight right down, and that is the audience this mower is aimed at; somebody who wants a simple, great value mower that will get the job done with least effort.

This Mower Is Suitable For

  • People with medium to large sized gardens (600m² or less) with no narrow strips.
  • Those that require a mower that does NOT collect the grass clippings.
  • People that require lightweight, quiet and easy to use hover mower.
  • Those that are looking for a trusted brand that is reliable and good value for money.
  • People that require the largest electric non-grass collecting hover mover in the Flymo Range.
  • Those that require a larger sized 40cm cutting width.
  • Requires a powerful 1500W motor for longer/thicker lawns.
  • Those that require a dual (left and right) handle control switch lever.
  • Those that require a foldable handle mower for compact storage.

Conclusion

The Flymo TurboLite 400 is a great all round mower that is designed for the maintenance of medium to large sized lawns.

The large 40cm deck size along with the 1500W motor make this mower ideal for larger lawns and really does make cutting the lawn a breeze. This mower is light at only 7.5kg, combine this with the Flymo air cushion and the fact that there is no grass box and you really can mow a large lawn very quickly and will tackle the most neglected lawn without any challenges.

The build quality is what you would expect from Flymo, it is not the highest quality but then Flymo are trying to keep this mower as light as possible.

What I like about this mower is the 5 different cutting heights, however you will need to add or remove spacers to the fan to adjust the height

The Flymo TurboLite 400 is great value for money and will fold away flat when not in use. The fact that this is non collect mower with no grass box may put some people off, but if you simply want a mower that will mow your lawn quickly and easily then this may well be the mower for you.

Remember if the 40cm deck size is a little large for your lawn then you may want to consider the smaller Flymo TurboLite 330 with a smaller deck size of 33cm but the same power motor at 1500W. If the 33cm deck size is still too large for your lawn then there is always the Flymo Turbo Lite 250 with a smaller deck size of just 25cm and is more suited to small lawns (under 150m²).

All in all this is a fantastic mower full of features that can be used to help make mowing your lawn that bit easier and enjoyable.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Easy to use and lightweight
  • 5 heights of cut (15mm - 41mm)
  • Good cutting width
  • Cutting height is easy to adjust
Cons
  • No grass box for collection
