Guide To Buying A Cordless Hedge Trimmer

Whether you have a single hedge that requires a little bit of upkeep or a garden that is surrounded by greenery, you’re going to need a reliable tool to maintain it. However, when you type ‘buy a hedge trimmer’ into Google, you’ll likely be inundated with results that leave you feeling incredibly overwhelmed. But provided you know what you are looking for, shopping for these gardening tools needn’t be a headache.

What To Ask Yourself When Buying A Cordless Hedge Trimmer

Buying A Cordless Hedge TrimmerYou wouldn’t go to a car dealer to purchase a new set of wheels without considering exactly what type of car you need. The same can be said for your hedge trimmers. Before you set out to buy a set of hedge trimmers, you will need to think about how you will use them.

Primarily, you should be looking at your budget. Some people will want to splash out on a top of the range hedge trimmer that boasts a lot of fancy features. However, this isn’t always necessary; there are plenty of budget friendly options on the market that do just as good a job. In order to determine this, you will need to think about the features, which I will talk you through a little later on in this article.

With that in mind, it is important to remember that larger hedge trimmers with more power are typically going to be more expensive and heavier, so the next question you should ask yourself is ‘What am I going to be cutting?’ If your garden is home to thick branches and dense hedges, a small, compact trimmer simply isn’t going to cut the mustard. Attempting this will likely see you with a broken trimmer or an incomplete job. While it might be a bigger initial investment, it may be wise to consider hedge trimmers that have the relevant power and size. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the different hedge trimmer sizes.

  • Large hedge trimmers are normally the most powerful and run at around 36 volts. While they are powerful, they may be a little too cumbersome for domestic use and are generally used by professional gardeners. That being said, there is no law against using them at home, especially if your garden requires that little bit more get up and go.
  • Medium hedge trimmers will give you around 18 volts of power which is pretty decent and ideal, in most cases, for domestic use. They will be able to do a lot of the same things as a larger trimmer, but won’t be as heavy or difficult to handle.
  • Small hedge trimmers are of course, the most compact of the lot and are great if your strength is limited and you might struggle with larger gardening tools. However, this compact and lightweight design comes at the cost of performance and these smaller trimmers tend to run at around 12 volts which won’t allow for cutting through more dense material. Additionally, these are generally much cheaper, so work well for people who are on a budget.

What To Look For When Buying Hedge Trimmers

Once you have decided upon the price and size of your hedge trimmers, there are some other things that you will need to think about. It can be tempting to rush your purchase and buy the first set of trimmers that catches your eye online. However, this may lead to you getting something inferior so doing your research first can save you time and money, in the long run.

Power – Is Cordless Right For Me?

The main debate when it comes to choosing any type of gardening equipment is the best type of power. In the main, you will come across corded, cordless and petrol hedge trimmers. Each of these types of power possesses different pros and cons and your situation will generally determine the type that will work best for you.

While the focus of this guide is on cordless hedge trimmers, I felt it important to point out the pros and cons of each type to help you make a more informed decision on whether this is the right type of equipment for your needs.

Petrol hedge trimmers are by far the most powerful and will make light work of even the most demanding gardening jobs. However, they are also the most expensive, heavy and require regular maintenance. But you could say that this heaviness also means that they are incredibly durable, so you need to weigh this up.

Another advantage of the petrol hedge trimmer is that it boasts the ability to operate for longer than a cordless hedge trimmer. While a corded trimmer may have continued power, there is significantly less torque in the motor meaning that the performance will never be as good as a petrol. For this reason, I would suggest that these petrol tools are suitable for people who have a lot of heavy gardening to do in various conditions, such as those who do landscaping for a living.

Alternatively, cordless hedge trimmers offer many advantages too such as convenience, low maintenance and a lightweight design. If you want something that will make light work of branches and foliage, then a cordless model might be what you are looking for. These are easy to handle and are powered by a rechargeable battery. However, this does mean that your power supply is limited so they may not be suitable for extended use on very large jobs, unless of course  you have a spare battery. Having said that, the advancements in lithium-ion batteries in recent years, means that there are now some cordless models that compete well with their petrol counterparts.

There are also corded hedge trimmers but again, the power is lacking when compared to a petrol model. However, you do have the advantage of unlimited running time which is useful if you have a lot of gardening to get through. You should consider that the power cord will limit where you can work and you may need to use extension cables. There is also the safety considerations with corded models, as there is always the risk of cutting through the power cable.

The Advantages Of A Cordless Hedge Trimmer

If you are certain that a cordless hedge trimmer is the way forward then first of all, let me congratulate you on this choice. These pieces of gardening equipment are certainly worth getting excited about. Let’s have a run down of the advantages:

  • They are lightweight
  • They are affordable
  • Ability to power share batteries
  • You won’t be tied to a power point so you have more freedom of movement
  • Many come with the option to extend the pole to reach higher up
  • Cordless trimmers are safer owing to the lack of a power cord
  • Can be used in remote locations where power is not available, such as an allotment
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Low maintenance

Battery

Cordless Hedge Trimmer BatteryThere is no denying that a cordless hedge trimmer has a significant drawback in the form of battery power running out in the middle of a job. While this type of equipment may not be suitable for professional gardeners, it can be hugely beneficial for domestic situations.

However, one of the most crucial things to look at is whether the battery will last long enough to get all of your cutting done. It can be useful to find a tool whose battery charges quickly so that you can do another job while it charges before getting back to trimming.

Alternatively, you should look at whether there is an option to purchase additional batteries, so you always have a spare one charged. But alongside this, you will need to think about the power of the battery.

Lithium-ion batteries are mainly used in these types of tools and these have a decent amount of power and are pretty durable. You should also pay attention to the battery voltage and amp hours, which will tell you about its power. The higher the number, the more powerful the battery. But you should also keep in mind that as the voltage / Ah goes up so does the weight and size of the battery meaning your tool will be heavier.

Ability

Cordless Hedge Trimmer AbilityRegardless of the type of power you have chosen, you will need to think about whether the hedge trimmer is up to the challenge. The first thing you should consider is the height of the hedge. Of course, you could use a ladder to access higher points but there is the safety aspect to consider when doing this.

The good news is that many models, particularly cordless ones come with an extendable handle that allows you to reach higher hedges without having to take your feet off the ground.

Another important thing to think about here is the type of blade that the hedge trimmer has. You could be forgiven for thinking that all blades were one of the same but in reality, there are several different types that are suited to different cutting needs. For example, the gap between the teeth on the blade will determine the thickness of the material that it is able to cut through.

Furthermore, you should think about whether the blade is dual action or single action. Single action blades have one edge that moves along a cutting bar, whereas dual action trimmers have two blades that move in alternate directions. These are generally accepted to deliver a better performance. Again, what you need to cut will determine the best type for you.

The length of the blade will have an impact on the performance of the cutter. For example, a shorter blade may be much easier to control and would work well for someone who is not used to using a hedge trimmer. However, they tend to be less precise and may not give you the finish you require. Conversely, a longer blade will deliver a much straighter / nicer cut, but you may find that they are a little difficult to balance and control. As a general rule, hedge trimmer blades between 45cm and 65cm are the most common.

Best Cordless Hedge Trimmers

Now that you are confident that you know what you are looking for when buying a cordless hedge trimmer, it is time to start shopping. Of course, with so many options, it isn’t difficult to feel overwhelmed. I feel that the following products are definitely worthy of a mention. I will take an in-depth look at each one, giving you a clear insight into whether it will be the right equipment for you.

DEWALT DCM563P1-GB ReviewDEWALT brings us this nifty little hedge trimmer that has one of the most impressive batteries that I have seen on this type of equipment. With a powerful 5.0Ah battery included, you get an incredible running time, which makes this the ideal tool for more demanding jobs that are going to take longer. What’s more, with a relatively generous charging time, the wait isn’t anything to worry about.

This hedge trimmer boasts the ability to make some pretty decent cuts and will work well with medium and large hedges. It has a mighty blade of exceptional quality and is lightweight and easy to use.

One of the first things that caught my eye when I looked at the DEWALT DCM563P1-GB hedge trimmer was the laser cut blade. If you want something sharp and precise then this one delivers an exceptional performance.

What’s more, you’re getting that longer running time and a durable blade as well as a hedge trimmer that is a dream to use. The initial investment is only slightly more than some others and for what you get, it’s absolutely worth it.

Bosch AHS 50-20 LI Review – 0600849F70

Bosch Home and Garden 0600849F70 ReviewIf you are looking for something that will get the hedge trimming done in minimum time then the Bosch AHS 50-20 LI trimmer might be for you. This is the epitome of what a cordless trimmer should be, with easy to use functions and a wealth of features that make cutting a breeze.

It features a lightweight design and is suitable for cutting medium sized hedges with a cutting ability, in terms of branch thickness, of up to 2.5cm. But what really stands out for me about this one is that it comes with a battery and charger that can be shared across the entire Bosch Home and Garden range, which is always a huge plus point.

Performance

The Bosch AHS 50-20 LI cordless hedge trimmer boasts a very impressive cutting ability and will easily tackle branches measuring up to 25mm. This makes it ideal for most average jobs and perfectly suited to domestic use. However, this is far from the most exciting thing about its performance.

This hedge trimmer features an anti-block blade. What this essentially means is that should the branch not be cut on the first pass, rather than affecting the motion of the blades, they will automatically cut in the opposite direction. This allows for interruption-free cutting that is almost effortless.

Bosch Home and Garden 0600849F70 Features

Features

  • The Bosch AHS 50-20 LI hedge trimmer comes with an 18v lithium-ion battery, that will deliver up to 200m² cutting before it needs recharging. What’s more, when the juice does eventually drain, giving it a boost to 100% takes a mere 60 minutes!
  • There is a handy blade guard, which allows you to cut along pathways, walls, fences and any other obstacles without any issue.
  • Bosch appears to have kept in mind that not all hedges are the same, and indeed, not all users are the same. To this end, the cutter includes a multi-position handle that will adjust to suit how you want to cut. This allows you to cut up high or at awkward angles, ensuring that no part of the hedge is left looking unkempt.
  • As I mentioned earlier, this hedge trimmer comes with a battery that can be used across the Bosch Home and Garden range. If you’ve already got a selection of these tools then the inclusion of a battery and charger will add to your collection. Conversely, if you’re just starting out with the brand, having these things included in the box is a massive plus.
  • The blade teeth are set at 20mm intervals and the blade width measures in at 5mm, this is conducive with the 2.5cm cutting width. Blade length is 50cm.
  • Weighing just 2.5kg, this hedge trimmer is ideal for people who are looking for a lightweight gardening solution. Like most cordless models, the lack of a petrol motor means that the tool is easier, quieter and safer to handle, even if your strength is lacking.

Warranty

Bosch Home and Garden 0600849F70 Pros and Cons

Much like many purchases, the Bosch AHS 50-20 LI hedge cutter comes with a standard 30-day return period. This should give you plenty of time to figure out whether the tool is right for your needs. However, in addition to this, you will also get a three-year warranty from the manufacturer included with your purchase. Just remember to register your product, otherwise the warranty will not be valid.

Value

At a snip over £120, you can’t complain that this hedge trimmer is overpriced; but is it worth the money? As a middle of the road tool, I feel that you are getting a decent bang for your buck. Not only is this an efficient piece of equipment, but it also has some nice features that mean it should cost more than it does.

For example, the inclusion of the battery and charger would typically boost the cost significantly. Furthermore, since these can be used with your other Bosch tools, you’re getting an even better deal.

Bosch 06008B3070 Cordless Telescopic Hedge Trimmer ReviewAnother impressive hedge trimmer from Bosch only this one is perfect for people whose hedges are much taller and wider. With the addition of a telescopic handle, you’ll notice that getting to those hard to reach spots is a breeze. What’s more, it comes with ten cutting angles so whether you want to cut horizontally or vertically, you have the option to do so.

Performance

The Bosch UniversalHedgePole 18 hedge trimmer delivers a clean and precise cut so you won’t need to keep going over the same parts several times. If you’ve ever used a substandard piece of cutting equipment, you will appreciate how annoying this can be. But much like the other Bosch trimmer we looked at, this one comes with anti-block technology so that the blades can change direction if they hit a tougher branch ensuring that you do not need to keep stopping.

Bosch 06008B3070 Features

Features

  • The Bosch UniversalHedgePole 18 cordless hedge trimmer comes with a telescopic handle making it perfect for getting to those high up spots. Not only does this mean that the hedge will be more evenly cut but it also makes it far more safe to use since you won’t need to be climbing ladders or steps. The handle extends to a whopping 2.6 metres which is more than enough for most UK gardens.
  • The trimmer comes with a powerful 18v battery that delivers enough get up and go for most average gardening needs. While it may not be sufficient for larger branches, this is unlikely something that would be needed in a domestic situation.
  • The battery can be power shared across various tools in the range, so if you are looking to start a Bosch collection, this will get you off to a great start.
  • With an impressive ten cutting angles to choose from and a cutting width of 16mm from the 43cm blade, you have the versatility to tackle several types of hedge. Whether you’re looking to lop the top off your conifers or re-sculpt a topiary, you certainly won’t be limited.
  • This is a very lightweight tool at 3.6kg but to better support the user, it comes with a shoulder strap. While not essential, this is a nice added extra.

Who Should Buy This Model?

If you have a lot of high hedges and trees in your garden then this is certainly one of the better options. Owing to its ability to extend up to 2.6 metres, you won’t need to climb steps or ladders which is excellent news for older people who may be a little unsteady on their feet, or like myself not great with heights.

This is also a great choice for people who are fans of the Bosch range since the battery can be power shared with any of the other 18v tools from the brand.

Makita DUH523Z Review – Cordless LXT Lithium-Ion Hedge Trimmer

Makita DUH523Z ReviewIf you want a hedge trimmer for lighter garden work then the Makita cordless trimmer is a great choice. It doesn’t come with the battery or charger so you will either need to already have these or be willing to buy them separately. However, the cost of the body is far from bank breaking for this premium brand, so it is worth considering.

This hedge trimmer is lightweight and has a brilliant selection of features that make it ideal for the domestic gardener. I was particularly impressed by the anti-vibration system and the user-friendliness of this tool; but more on that later on.

Performance

The Makita DUH523Z cordless hedge trimmer is the perfect option for people who maintain their gardens well and need something to help with this upkeep. While it might not be suitable for extremely heavy work or thicker branches, if you’re looking to trim back your pruned hedges, this will make light work of this job.

What’s more, the Makita hedge trimmers feature an incredibly durable blade that will glide through the foliage with ease. You won’t find yourself straining with each cut, which is great for quick touch-ups. The blade is coated in nickel giving it a stain-free design that won’t wear quickly. However, when it is time to switch up the blade, doing so is quick and easy and can be done by the user.

Makita DUH523Z Features

Features

  • The Makita DUH523Z trimmer works with an 18v battery putting it right in the middle of the road in terms of power. The battery is not included in the box so you will need to purchase this separately, as well as the charger. However, with a generous cutting time and handy LED blinkers to let you know when the battery is about to run dry, you couldn’t really ask for much more.
  • This hedge trimmer has an anti-vibration system that makes using it so much more comfortable than some of its competitors. This is thanks to the five internal cushions that absorb much of the energy produced by the motor so you won’t feel a thing.
  • The blades measure 52cm and give you a cutting width of 15mm which is perfect for light to medium gardening and again, I have to point out that they are nickel-coated.
  • The handle is coated with a comfortable rubber grip for a much more pleasant user experience.
  • The Makita cordless hedge trimmer is lightweight weighing just a little over 3kg. This is ideal for working higher up as the arms won’t get tried as quickly. It is also perfect for older people who find that their strength isn’t what it once was.
  • With two hand operation, this is a very safe tool to use. The motor will not activate unless both the top handle and switch are engaged.

Makita DUH523Z Pros and Cons

The Makita DUH523Z cordless hedge trimmer is one of the less expensive tools I have looked at. However, it does pay to keep in mind that this is due to the fact that the battery and charger are not included. When you factor in the cost of purchasing these, you’ll be paying much the same as other tools in this class.

That being said, with a durable blade and some nice features, you are getting a relatively good deal. The only thing that I would point out here is that since this isn’t designed for heavy-duty work, but is perfect for the average garden environment.

Warranty

Makita DUH523Z offers its customers a standard one-year warranty. However, this can be extended; the details of this can be found on their website. In a nutshell, you’ll need to send the tool off to be serviced by the manufacturer within the first 12 months, if you want to extend the warranty. I’ll leave it to you to decide whether that is worth the hassle.

Who Should Buy This Model?

This is a great choice for people who don’t need to tackle big gardening jobs. If you simply want to maintain an already pruned hedge, these cutters will more than meet your needs. Furthermore, they would make a brilliant choice for someone who already has the battery and charger and is merely looking to replace their existing trimmers.

Ryobi OHT1855R ONE+ Cordless Hedge Trimmer Review

Ryobi OHT1855R ONE+ Cordless Hedge Trimmer ReviewIf you’re familiar with Ryobi tools then you will almost certainly appreciate their quality. The One+ range is excellent for a number of reasons but primarily because you are getting the option to access a huge range of more than 30 tools. Tackling everything from hedge trimmer to drilling is pretty much effortless.

In the case of this hedge trimmer, you are getting an excellent range of features including the double trigger for safe operation, an intelligent battery and a 55cm blade that powers through the foliage in no time at all. If it’s power you are looking for, then I would highly recommend this model.

Performance

Like many of the other Ryobi tools, this OHT1855R ONE+ hedge trimmer delivers exactly what you would expect; power and reliability. Whether you are looking for a cordless trimmer to add to your commercial arsenal, or simply need something for those gardening jobs at home, this is versatile enough to meet your needs.

With an 18v 4.0Ah battery, you’re getting enough oomph for most standard jobs and when you couple this with the lengthy 55cm blade, you can appreciate how the tool will make light work of the job. What’s more, with a longer blade, you get longer reach, which is great news for anyone who has wider or taller hedges.

Ryobi OHT1855R Features

Features

  • The Ryobi OHT1855R hedge trimmer is part of a larger One+ series of tools that has more than 30 appliances in the collection. As such, you have options when you are buying. Primarily, you can choose whether to take just the tool, or get the whole package with the battery and charger included.
  • This hedge trimmer comes with a powerful 18v 4.0Ah battery. The higher Ah would suggest a greater running time and while it is semi decent, you might find yourself charging it more frequently than you had hoped. That being said, owing to the power of the tool, it’s worth the slightly shorter running time.
  • The battery features a handy 4 stage power gauge which details how much juice you have left. I found this to be pretty handy since it goes down from 100% to 75% to 50% to 25%, making it clear the entire time.
  • The intellicell battery is a smart power source that boasts technology which can improve the overall battery life, meaning that you won’t need to replace it anywhere near as frequently.
  • This Ryobi OHT1855R ONE+ hedge trimmer has a cutting width of 22mm which is great for most average garden jobs. However, if you have thicker or more challenging branches to cut, you might find that this doesn’t quite live up to your expectations. Having said that, this is one of the widest cuts of the hedge trimmers I have reviewed. The blade on this model is 55cm in length.
  • At just 2.8kg, this is an excellently lightweight tool, which is great if you’re going to be tackling longer jobs. It also has a rubber grip handle for comfort, improving the overall user experience.
  • The hedge trimmer boasts a double safety trigger which means that the likelihood of accidental start-ups is drastically reduced.

Ryobi OHT1855R Pros and Cons

This is a slightly pricier model than some of the other hedge trimmers I have looked at, but I certainly wouldn’t say that it was over the top in terms of price. You get what you pay for and with the smart features and decent level of power as well as the option to use alongside other tools in the range, it’s a pretty fair price.

What’s more, if you already have plenty of batteries and chargers, you can pick this up for significantly less by just purchasing the trimmer on its own, as a bare tool.

Warranty

The standard warranty on the Ryobi hedge trimmer sits at two years. I’d say this was more than fair but when you consider that there is the option for an extended warranty, you can feel confident that you’ll always be covered. The extended warranty boosts you to three years but in order to get this, you must register your tool.

Who Should Buy This Model?

Anyone who already makes use of other tools in the ONE + range will certainly benefit from adding this hedge trimmer to their collection. I’d also say that if you wanted something a little more powerful and robust, this would be a good option. Of course, a cordless is never going to wield as much power as a petrol trimmer but with some tools, manufacturers are starting to get closer to achieving this.

Terratek 20V Cordless Electric Hedge Trimmer Review

Terratek 20V Cordless Electric Hedge Trimmer ReviewI was very impressed by the Terratek hedge trimmer. Not only does it have enough power to cut through medium to large hedges, but it comes with some handy features that just make life that little bit easier.

This hedge trimmer has a decent running time of 45 minutes and is lightweight. What’s more, the manufacturers have factored in the user’s comfort by including a soft grip handle and some excellent safety features. I’d have to say that this is one of my favourites in terms of performance too; you really are getting the best of everything.

Performance

The Terratek 20V hedge trimmers comes with a 51cm blade that will make light work of your hedge with a cutting width of 15mm. The 20v battery delivers a solid level of power, so all you really need to do is guide the tool where you need it to go.

With some cordless hedge trimmers, you may find that you have to give it a bit of your own power to cut through, but this one does all of the hard work for you. I’m going to put this down to the 1100rpm that the motor manages. While this is lower than the average cordless hedge trimmer, it is more than enough for domestic gardening.

Terratek 20V Features

Features

  • The Terratek 20V hedge trimmers are lightweight, weighing just 2.5kg. This is great if you struggle with large, more bulky tools and perfect for those days where you have a lot of cutting to get through.
  • In addition to being lightweight, these hedge trimmers boast an ergonomic design that makes them a delight to use. The soft grip handle is a nice added touch and will prevent pressure and discomfort on the hands.
  • If it’s safety you’re after, the Terratek 20V is at the forefront of the game. It comes with a couple of impressive safety features including a hand guard so your hands won’t ever go anywhere near the blade. What’s more, if the trigger is let go, the motor will stop immediately. This means that if the trimmer is accidentally dropped, it will stop and nobody is going to get hurt.
  • One of the most outstanding things about this hedge trimmer is that it will charge in as little as one hour thanks to the fast charge feature. The charger is included in the box so there’s no additional outlay.
  • Unless you are pruning an incredibly out of control hedge, you’ll likely find that the 45 minute running time of this trimmer is more than substantial. However, if you do need a little more, I have to refer you to the previous point; put your feet up for an hour and take a lunch break, when you come back, the battery will be ready to take you through another three quarters of an hour.

Terratek 20V Pros and Cons

As one of the least expensive tools that I have looked at, I can’t help but rave about what good value this hedge trimmer is. When you consider that you are not only getting the trimmer but a battery and fast charger to boot, you couldn’t ask for a better price.

Furthermore, since this is a hedge trimmer that is bursting with exciting features, I’d say that you were getting more than your money’s worth. While the durability of this one is slightly less, that’s a minor point when you compare it to everything else you are getting. Just be careful and treat it with respect.

Warranty

Terratek 20V Cordless Electric Hedge Trimmer gives all its customers a two year warranty as standard so you can feel confident that, if anything does go wrong, the manufacturer has your back!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Various safety features
  • Soft, ergonomic handle
  • 15mm cutting width
  • Fast charging battery
  • Charger and battery are included
Cons
  • Build quality not as good Bosch/DEWALT
  • Shorter warranty than others

Who Should Buy This Model?

For anyone who is looking for a budget-friendly hedge trimmer that doesn’t scrimp on features, I would highly recommend this model. While you might think that its lesser cost means that it won’t function quite as well, you would be surprisingly mistaken. The Terratek 20V Cordless Electric Hedge Trimmer is everything you could want in a hedge trimmer, and then some.

If you’re new to cordless hedge trimmers and want to get a feel for what they’re like, this would be an excellent place to start. But let me warn you, owing to how good this one is, if you start with it, it will set a high benchmark for all other cordless tools that follow! No wonder that this model is so popular and keeps selling out.
