5 Best Cordless Lawn Mowers for Large Lawns
Select your requirements by ticking the applicable tick boxes below; so I can help you pick the perfect cordless lawn mower for a large sized lawn.
What Makes A Perfect Cordless Mower For A Large Sized Lawn?
Size Of Lawn
Of course, you can have additional batteries, or have the option to purchase higher rated (Ah) batteries that will run for a longer period of time.
Size Of Deck & Grass Collection Box
As mentioned above, the ability for a cordless mower to cover a large lawn is not only dictated by the power of the battery, but also the size of the deck. When purchasing a cordless lawn mower for a large lawn you really want to be cutting as wider strips as possible to limit the number of passes and time required. So getting a large enough deck is going to be an essential decision. This needs to be balanced with storage requirements, the ability to navigate narrow passages in your garden and being able to manoeuvre the mower easily. As a guide, you should be looking for a deck size of at least 40cm when considering any cordless lawn mower for a larger lawn. In terms of cutting width there are many options available, some of which exceed 51cm, rivalling their petrol cousins. There are even cordless self-propelled models available with variable speeds, but more on that later.
In terms of the grass collection box or bag, you should be looking for something of at least a 45 litre capacity, to ensure that you are not having to continuously stop to empty the grass cuttings. Again, be careful to get the balance right, as a 60 litre grass collection box, full of cuttings, will make the mower very heavy and difficult to manoeuvre.
Battery
The great news is that the majority of manufacturers sell a wide range of varying Ah batteries, that can be additionally purchased, should you want to extend the run-time. But as a guide a 12v 2.0Ah battery is never going to be able to cut a large lawn, as you are only looking, at best, at 15 minutes of run-time. On the other hand, a 56v 7.5Ah battery will have enough juice to cut a lawn up to 800 square meters with 50 minutes of run-time.
Another great advantage, with some brands, is the ability to power share the batteries across a range of garden tools. As you have a large garden this is a great feature that adds to the versatility of your tools. Not to be outdone by their petrol cousins, cordless lawn mowers are now available with self-propelled drive and variable speeds, again a feature particularly useful for larger lawns. The thing to remember here is that a self-propelled model is going to reduce the run-time of the mower. Most models will allow you to disengage the self-propelled drive, only be used when required i.e. slopes.
Standard vs Fast Charger
While we are on the subject of batteries, don’t forget to consider the charger that is supplied with your cordless mower. If your mower takes two batteries simultaneously, makes sure your battery charger is able to charge both batteries together. Not all chargers are equal. There are standard chargers and fast chargers, and the difference can vary widely. For example, a standard charger may charge a battery in 3 hours, compared to a fast charger reducing this time to only 1 hour.
Other Considerations For Choosing A Cordless Mower For A Large Lawn
So whilst the above are areas that need to be considered specific to larger lawns, you now need to decide what other general features you require. These include –
- Self-Propelled Drive
- Variable Speed
- Vertical Storage
- Folding Handles
- Hose Wash Port
- Number and Range of Height Adjustments
- Cutting Options (Mulching, Side and Rear Discharge)
- Build Quality and Performance
- Safety Features
- Spare Parts and Support
- Warranty
What Criteria Have I Used To Select The Best Cordless Lawn Mowers For A Large Lawn
The best cordless lawn mowers for large lawns have been selected based on many factors, features, practicalities and performance. Within each review you will see a detailed breakdown of each factor and how well the mower is scored, however in general I have used the following measures to shortlist them:
Build quality, performance, quality of cut and blade width, value for money, cutting time, batteries and charge time, height adjustment, grass box size, available cutting options and safety features.
Conclusion
Cordless mowers have come on leaps and bounds due to better battery technology with Lithium-Ion batteries creating more power, quicker charge times and longer cut times. Also, cordless mowers require very little ongoing maintenance particularly when compared to their petrol cousins, not to mention no fuel and oil storage concerns.
In summary, cordless mowers are most definitely a real option when it comes to looking for a new mower for your large lawn. Even die hard petrol fans are starting to see the endless benefits of cordless battery over petrol, and are now convinced, as long as you choose the correct model, will have the power and performance to deal with the most demanding and large lawns effectively.
Cordless Lawn Mower For Large Lawns FAQs
Are Cordless Lawn Mowers Good For Large Lawns?
Modern cordless lawn mowers are a good option for bigger lawns, thanks to recent improvements in lithium-ion battery technology, but you will need to make sure that you choose the right model. You’ll likely need something with a wider cutting width as well as a higher voltage/Ah machine to ensure the correct power and runtime. Owners of large gardens will also need to ensure that the mower they choose has a good battery life, so that they aren’t interrupted by a depleted battery in the middle of the mowing session. To learn more see my article What Should I Look For In A Cordless Lawn Mower?
How Long Do Cordless Battery Powered Mowers Last?
A good quality cordless lawn mower should last around five years when it is well maintained. Of course, with a larger garden, you will be getting more use out of the machine so it may wear a little sooner than if you were mowing a smaller area. That said, with correct maintenance and care, there’s no reason your mower shouldn’t stand the test of time.
How Much Does A Battery Lawn Mower Cost?
Price should never be the determining factor when choosing a cordless lawn mower, but it is a good idea to understand what you can get for your budget. The cost of a cordless lawn mower will vary greatly from brand to brand and according to what features the mower has. At the lower end of the scale, you might expect to be able to pick up a battery lawn mower for as little as £150-£200. However, for higher build quality mowers with superior batteries, some of which are self-propelled, you can end up paying up to and beyond £1000. For mid-range cordless mowers you can expect to pay around £400.
What Is The Best Cordless Lawn Mower For A Large Garden?
There are many excellent manufacturers of cordless lawn mowers and it would be wrong of me to tell you that any one reigned supreme. However, some of the best brands include Ryobi, Hyundai, Gtech, Stihl and Cobra. It is a good idea to research a brand to make sure that they are reputable, make quality mowers and have an adequate supply of readily available spare parts such as replacement blades, but it’s also essential to look at other features such as cutting width and run time to determine whether the mower is best for your large garden. To learn more see my article What Makes A Good Cordless Mower.
What Size Is A Large Lawn?
It can be difficult to determine whether your lawn is classed as “large” without having exact measurements. However, generally speaking, anything bigger than the size of two tennis courts would be considered large. On the other hand, anything smaller than half a tennis court would be considered a small lawn, leaving anything between these sizes, a medium lawn. If you would like to learn how to quickly measure your garden using Google Maps, check out my video below. You can then compare the exact measurements to the chart below showing the deck size required for your square meterage. *A tennis court is around 260m².
What’s The Right Cutting Width For A Large Lawn?
The cutting width of your lawn mower dictates the size of the area covered in each pass. For larger gardens, you need something that will cover a larger area in each pass as this will make the job quicker and more efficient. Generally speaking, for cordless lawn mowers, anything over 40cm would be suitable for a large lawn. That said, some people may find that a larger 51cm mower is a better choice. In addition, you will also need to ensure that you look at other features such as the number of cutting heights and cutting options to ensure they are aligned to your requirements.
What Is The Widest Cordless Lawn Mower?
If you have an extremely large garden and want a mower that will make light work of keeping it tidy, then you’ll need one of the biggest lawn mowers. Cordless lawn mowers don’t usually exceed about 51cm here in the UK, although there are some commercial walk-behind mowers out there that have larger deck sizes. For domestic use, it is at this point that you may want to consider a ride on mower that offer larger deck sizes.
How Long Do Cordless Mower Batteries Last?
The battery for your cordless lawn mower will typically last up to 500 charges. The time that this covers depends on how often you use the battery but as a rule of thumb, this would mean that the battery would last between three and five years. In terms of running time, cordless mowers differ greatly. When choosing a mower for a large lawn, you will need to select one whose running time is at least between 45 and 60 minutes. The other option is to purchase extra batteries.
What Is Brushless On A Cordless Mower?
You will often see a cordless lawn mower being advertised as ‘brushless’ this is in reference to the motor. A brushless motor does not have brushes which on brushed motors can wear out over the course of time meaning more maintenance. Furthermore, a brushless motor provides a more reliable, quieter and smoother experience and will adjust the power according to the task at hand.
Do Cordless Lawn Mowers Need Maintenance?
The great thing about choosing a cordless lawn mower for your large garden is that it won’t require anywhere near as much maintenance as a petrol mower. You will need to keep the blades clean and ensure good charging practises, but other than that, they’re very simple to run. Learn more by reading my article Electric and Cordless Lawn Mower Maintenance.
Can You Hose Down A Battery Operated Lawn Mower?
After mowing your large garden, your cordless mower may be in need of a clean, but unlike some petrol mowers that have hose ports, you cannot use water on a battery powered lawn mower. If water gets into the motor, this will cause corrosion which will ultimately end the life of your mower and you’ll need to purchase a replacement. Stick to using a soft, dry brush to remove grass and other debris. However, there are a few exceptions, Hayter and Mountfield both offer cordless mowers with hose wash ports, so something to consider if this is a feature you would find beneficial. Always consult the operating instructions for safe ways to clean your mower.
What Should I Look For In A Cordless Lawn Mower For Large Lawns?
The main thing you should be looking for in this instance is a mower with higher Ah batteries and higher voltage. This ensures maximum power and run time so that you won’t need to stop in the middle of mowing your lawn. By virtue of having a large lawn you are going to need some stamina to get the job done in one go. It is therefore worth considering a self-propelled cordless lawn mower that is going to remove the hard push out of mowing your lawn. As well as being self-propelled you may also want to consider a variable speed model to ensure that you can operate at a pace that is suitable to you personally. (don’t want to feel that the mower is running away from you OR being too slow)

Hello Mark,
I have been thinking of going all electric and was about to settle on the EGO system, buying a large mower, which also has the backpack for professional hand tool such as the hedge trimmer, chainsaw etc. I have just been reading of EGOs poor after sales service and very bad comments about the batteries. Is EGO or another make to be recommended?. My local dealer sings the praises of EGO I am a smallholder needing professional sized equipment
Thanks
Bob Ayers
Hi Robert, when I tested the EGO I didn’t have any issues and it performed exceptionally well. However, this was a short term test, so can’t comment on its longer term usage.
Saying that, I have received really good reports of the EGO range, and these are people who have been using them for many months. With cordless do you get to the point in terms of size and terrain, where petrol may become the better option. Let me know how you get on. All the very best Mark
I really like the look of the Hyundai HYM80Li460P, but your review says it has a good running time (40 minutes), but on 2x 2.5Ah batteries I find it difficult to believe this would be the case if the Cobra RM43SP80V has 2x 5Ah (double the capacity) and runs for 50 minutes. Is the review based on the specifications from the manufacturer? I’d be interested in real life run times.
It’s annoying Hyundai don’t do larger capacity batteries as an option, the only sell 2.5Ah.
Hi Oliver, thanks for your comments. You can see my full review and video of the Hyundai HYM80Li460P on the link below. This will give you an indication of the run-time I achieved on my lawn.

Thanks Mark
Hello Mark,
I enjoyed watching a few of your video reviews on Youtube and was about to buy the Murray 41cm cordless but noticed it had quite a lot of poor feedback on Amazon concerning quality control and very poor after sales support from Murray.
So now, after watching more of your reviews I am thinking about buying the Cobra MX4140V 41cm cordless lawnmower which does get good Amazon reviews but I notice that it does not seem to come up in your “best” categories.
I do like good quality products that look and feel right which is why I am probably leaning towards the metal case of the Cobra – can you think of any reason why I should not get one ?
And one last question – which machine do you you use the most ?
Best regards,
David
Hi David, thanks for your feedback. I do have both of these mowers still sitting in my shed and I tend to use the Cobra for for a quick cut of the lawn. In terms of build quality and components, it is true that the Cobra is superior and I do like the steel deck. Just bear in mind that the Cobra is a heavier machine (just over 4kg) and doesn’t have a rear roller. I also have the larger Cobra RM43SP80V, I use this for striped lawn apprearance (wife’s preferance), and is also well build, self propelled and has a solid petrol mower feel (even heavier to achieve long lasting stripes).

Conbra support is by far more responsive shoul you need them.
If you do want to purchase the Murray, they are regularly reduced, I would not recommend you purchasing at full price, even today’s slightly reduced price.
If you do decide to purchase I would appreciate if you click on the “Check Today’s Price” within my review, as affiliate link.
Hope this helps. Mark
