Summary
What is the Greenworks 40V 49cm Cordless Lawn Mower? The Greenworks 40V is a cordless lawn mower that has a deck size of 49cm, covers lawns up to 800m² and has 5 cutting heights between 35mm and 85mm. This Greenworks cordless lawn mower has a very large 60 litre grass collection box, charges in a very respectable 120 minutes, provides up to 70 minutes of run time and has the ability to mulch the lawn clippings without having to purchase any additional accessories.
The Greenworks 40V Cordless Dual Blade Lawn Mower 49cm (19″) with 2x 2Ah batteries and charger – 2500207UC is one of the best selling cordless lawn mowers in the US. How does this mower that is on the market in the UK compare to others in this price range?
The Greenworks Dual Blade Lawn Mower 49 cm (19″) is indeed packed with features you would expect to see in higher end cordless mowers and certainly has the ability to cut a lawn up to 800 meters square with the 4Ah power batteries (roughly the size of 3 tennis courts). This mower needs to be compared to its nearest rival, the BLACK+DECKER 36 V Lithium-Ion Autosense Mower CLMA4820L2-GB, in order to judge how good this mower really is. These two mowers are probably the most affordable and best performing large cordless mowers on the market today.
To compare the Greenworks to other cordless mowers in higher or lower price range would distort the results.
Below I have listed all the features and functions of the Greenworks 49 cm 40V, both the good and not so good and then compared it to the BLACK+DECKER 36 V Lithium-Ion Autosense mower so you understand exactly what you’re getting for your money.
Main Features
- Covers areas up to 800 m² in size
- 2 batteries – 2 x 40V, 2Ah (400 m²)
- Optional batteries – 2 x 40V, 4Ah (800 m²)
- Blade length: 49 cm (19 inch)
- Number of Cutting Height: 5 (35mm – 85mm)
- Grass box capacity: 60 Litre (13 Gallon)
- Charge time for 2Ah batteries: 60 mins each battery
- Charge time for 4Ah batteries: 120 mins each battery
- Free run time: 70 minutes for 2 x 2Ah batteries OR 1 x 4Ah battery
Power System
Like many cordless lawn mowers, the Greenworks 49 cm 40V is powered by two Lithium-ion battery (40V) and electrical motor which will charge in around 2 hours depending on the batteries you use. The batteries are removed from the mower for charging and storage.
There is a downside however. Each battery needs to be charged individually as the charger can only charge one battery at a time, it could take up to 2 hours to fully recharge, however this will produce a very respectable mowing time of around 70 minutes.
In comparison to the BLACK+DECKER the charge times are very similar but provides a slightly shorter mowing time for the 2 x 2Ah batteries. This naturally depends on the condition and length of the lawn.
Unlike the Greenworks only one battery can be made active on the mower with the Black & Decker. With the Greenworks, once one battery is drained the machine automatically switches over to the second battery. This is a very convenient feature.
With both mowers, only one battery can be charged at any time. I also found that the charger with the Black & Decker will not allow the battery to be recharged immediately after being used and needs some time to allow the battery to cool down, so bare this in mind when comparing charging times.
In summary, the Greenworks 40V will offer slightly longer mowing time in comparison to the BLACK+DECKER. In the table below I have included the difference in relation to charge time.
Another advantage of both the Greenworks and BLACK+DECKER mowers is that their batteries will fit over 25 other tools available from their own manufacturer including string trimmers, garden blowers, chain saws and many more, This is very useful if you already have or are planning to have other Greenworks tools.
With regards to the slight differences in mowing/charging time, this doesn’t directly affect you if this is enough time to cut the entire lawn, as there will be no rush to charge the batteries for the next cut.
Also, the power system is completely electric so it produces zero emissions and works extremely quietly. Which is quieter? Well there’s not much between them but would say the Greenworks 40V is slightly quieter than the BLACK+DECKER, but really there is nothing in it that you would notice.
The great thing about cordless mowers is that you can set out to work at any time you want without it disturbing your family or your neighbours as the mowers are very quiet. With zero emissions they look after the environment as well.
Blades
The Twin Force G-MAX Lithium-Ion Mower has a 49 cm cutting width with two blades that do not overlap but come very close to each other. The dual metal mower blades offer very effective benefits…
- Having two blades provide for a very fine mulch cut. Blades of grass are cut smaller and finer making it more easily absorbed into the lawn.
- The two blades allow for a wide 49 cm cutting width right to the edge of the mower.
- Metal blades generally wear less quickly than plastic blades which results in you needing to replace the lawn mower blades less often.
- Metal blades are generally sharper and provide a cleaner cut to the grass blade, resulting in a neater, tidier and superior finish to your lawn and garden. The metal blades on the Twin Force G-MAX can be sharpened when needed unlike plastic blades.
All the benefits listed above put this mower ahead of its competitors and it’s good that Greenworks have taken advantage of what is clearly the most effective cutting system in the market.
So in summary, this mower cuts extremely well whether or not you decide to collect the clippings or go for the mulching option. Also, with the wide cutting width you will cut your grass in less time with fewer passes.
Cutting Diameter Options
The Greenworks Cordless mowers are available in the following deck diameter sizes. This range makes it easy for you to choose the width that is best for your lawn’s shape and size.

It can’t all be good?
Well, no. There are a couple of small disadvantages of having the two blades and to some extent puts this mower at a slight disadvantage compared to the BLACK+DECKER.
- The two blades turn in different directions so you do not have the option for side discharge as you do with the BLACK+DECKER. On this mower you only have 2 options – mulching and rear bagging because of the dual blade design, it does not offer a side discharge feature.
- As the blades do not overlap (but come very close) you sometimes can see it miss the odd blade of grass. This is very picky and will not even be noticed by the majority, but maybe worth a mention.
Height Adjustment
In order to combat the changing season and to continually improve the look of your lawn, you can adjust the height at which the Greenworks 49 cm 40V Twin Force Cordless Lawn Mower (25302) cuts at. This is done very easily using the large single lever located on top/side of the mower.
It lets you choose to cut from anywhere between 35mm to 85mm with 5 separate cutting heights. Just make sure you don’t set it at the shortest setting from the when the lawn has significant growth, instead start at a higher setting and gradually work your way down. This gives the areas of small grass the opportunity to catch up with the long, resulting in a more even and lush looking lawn.
As well as being able to sharpen the blades, it is also possible to purchase a replacement blade. Replacing the blade is relatively easy for anyone with basic DIY skills and tools.
Cutting Diameter and Height
The cutting diameter of this mower is a very respectable 49 cm and is perfect for those with lager lawns and no narrow strips to navigate. This mower will reduce mowing time and in turn give you more time to put your feet up to admire your beautiful lawn. Now, compared to its counterparts with smaller widths, this might be a potential disadvantage should you have a smaller garden with narrow strips. However for larger gardens this mower with its performance, power, large grass box and reliability is definitely a strong contender.
You may well be thinking that for a mower with such a large cutting width you would have to compromise on having a heavy and difficult to manoeuvre mower, well that’s not the case with the Greenworks Twin Force G-MAX. At just 42.5 lbs (19.2kgs) it is one of the lightest mowers in this class and size range and weighs up to 30-40 lbs lighter than a gas/petrol mower – WOW!.
When you need a mower that’s light in weight and going to get your lawn mowed in the shortest time possible, this may well be the best option, the Greenworks Twin Force G-MAX could be the cordless mower of choice.
Grass Box Capacity
As with all larger cordless lawn mowers the grass box is going to hold much more than its smaller counterparts. The 60 Litre collection box is also much larger than the Black and Decker at 50 Litres. The size of the collection box will allow for longer periods of use without needing to empty grass clippings as often.
The grass box on the Greenworks is very easy to remove. The grass clippings empty from the box freely with no obstructions.
An airflow tab located on the bag indicates when the box is full, eliminating any guesswork about when it needs emptying.
Practicalities
The light weight, oversized rear wheels and the large cutting width make this mower excellent for larger lawns or lawns with slopes.
This lawn mower will make lawn care much easier and really makes the entire experience much less dependent on you struggling with a heavy oversized petrol mower.
As with all cordless lawn mowers, not being tethered by the cord not only makes it easier to mow the lawn, but safer, quieter and more environmentally friendly.
Does this make it more practical compared to the closest competition? Well, yes I think it does for people with large lawns that have a need for longer running/mowing time. There is also a fold away handle that makes carrying and storing the mower in the garage or shed very easy.
Safety Features
What I really like about the Greenworks Twin Force G-MAX is the addition of a removable safety key that disables the lawnmower to help prevent accidental starting. This is a nice feature not found on similar cordless mowers that give peace of mind around children.
Mulching
As with almost all Greenworks cordless lawn mowers they are capable of mulching without the need to purchase an additional mulching plug. The Greenworks Twin Force G-MAX seems to do this very well due to its dual blades that produce a fine and very small mulch.
To learn more about the benefits of a mower that has the ability to mulch the lawn, please see my article “The Benefits of Mulching Grass – Complete Guide with Pros & Cons“.
What’s Included in the Box
- The mower itself
- (2) x 2AH Battery, and Charger (40V)
- 60 L Grass Collection Box
- Mulch Plug
- 4-years warranty (2 years for the batteries)
- Instruction Manual
Downsides
- This mower is not self propelled – but it is really light enough that it doesn’t matter too much.
- You can only charge one battery at a time, so a second charger may be required if this is an issue for you.
- This mower can struggle in a really dense grass areas. Be prepared to make more passes in such conditions, however this is a slight issue that most cordless mowers experience.
Now, the above items may sound trivial and are common to most cordless mowers but should be taken into consideration anyway. They are part of the package and it’s better being aware of them before a purchase than after.
Conclusion
Overall this is an outstanding mower! I actually rate it higher than the BLACK+DECKER lawn mower due to its light weight, performance, reliability, good build quality and incredible 4 year warranty – that is twice the industry standard! It also feels very powerful, this is probably due to the built in auto throttle, which automatically adjust power to the cutting blades so the mower is not working harder than it has to.
The extra features like the removable safety key is a nice touch but one that you will most probably never use. Besides you want features that will help you achieve a lovely looking lawn with least amount of work and effort.
The Greenworks 40V Cordless 49cm is very proficient at cutting varying lengths and thickness of grass for such a lightweight cordless mower. This is very impressive. It’s worth mentioning that by cutting more regularly and avoiding very long or wet grass this should avoid putting too much strain on the battery. Remember to always keep the battery charged and in a dry place over winter.
With this mower you’re getting features normally found in high priced petrol mowers, so this is very reasonably priced for such a well performing and durable lawn mover.
But do I think it’s better than its closest competitors?
Yes I do!
At this price range the Greenworks 40V Cordless 49cm offers great value for money and you would be very hard pressed to find a cordless mower that performs this well and has such a good build quality for this price. To get the best out of this mower you will need to cut your lawn more regularly and not let the grass grow too high or dense as it may struggle a little, this is however common with all cordless mowers at this price point and specification.
Overall, I think this is a fantastic mower and I encourage everyone with a larger garden to purchase one. In fact, I think it’s one of the best cordless mowers at this price point and deck size you can get right now!
The 4 year warranty will provide additional peace of mind and speaks volumes about the durability and quality of this product.
Pros and Cons
Should You Buy This Model?
Well there are a few factors to consider first, whether or not you purchase this model really depends on your garden and situation.
To give you some guidance on which type of customer would suit this model best, below I’ve listed the categories they would fall under:
- People with large lawns up to 800m² in size.
- Those who require the ability to discharge the cuttings from the rear (not collect).
- Those who want the option to mulch and cut grass with the same mower.
- People who need a wide cutting deck of 49cm to get the lawn cut with fewer passes.
- People who require high power mower with long run-times (up to 70 minutes).

Of course this is open to interpretation so if you don’t fall under every single category then don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll still love this product. It has loads of great features that I’m sure you will make use of, even if you’re not its perfect customer.

Totally agree with all your comments. Purchased in early 2020 and are extremely pleased with everything about it except the cut height. Is there a reason why the larger models have a higher starting cut height and can it be lowered in any way?
Hi Trevor, so pleased you are happy with your purchase. The Greenworks are really good value mowers for the quality you get.
With regards to the height unfortunately there is nothing you can do to lower the minimum height. It is quite common with the larger mowers to have a higher min setting, as the belief is these are designed for larger, more demanding lawns, as opposed to a smaller manicured lawn. Thanks
I have been searching for the perfect mower for ages. Not easy with so many options available. Your review has really helped, now the mower has arrived and I couldn’t be happier. The battery can be shared with my other GW tools, the options for cutting is great, never had mulching belore must say it works brilliantly – thanks for highlighting the benefits. The grass box is great size, the batteries provide good runtime to cover my lawn, the cost is not the cheapest but well worth the investment. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Paul for your comments and sharing your experience of this Greenworks mower. Glad that you are happy with your purchase and it was what you expected.
Thanks again
