Now, I won’t lie, this one will set you back a little more than some of the other cordless mowers I have reviewed in recent months, but it’s more than worth the investment when you see what you get for your money.

Power System and Battery
One of the things that first caught my attention about the Redback E146CV was that you have versatile options just about everywhere you turn. The first being that this tool works with a range of batteries.
By that, I mean that you can choose between a 2.0Ah, 4.0Ah or 6.0Ah battery, each delivering different run times. Now, the 6.0Ah will give you the most juice per charge and can run for up to 50 minutes each time. While it might be a little more expensive, it’s worth it for convenience.
There is also a choice of charger; the standard charger or the fast charger. The Redback EC20 offers standard charging times of between 70 and 200 minutes, depending on the model of mower. For the Redback E146CV, you’ll be waiting for around 135 minutes for a full charge. However, if you opt to use the EC50 fast charger, you can cut this charge time in half. Again, you’ll pay more for the privilege, but the time you’ll save is surely worth considering.
It is possible to buy the Redback E146CV as a set with the battery and charger, but if you already have these pieces of equipment, it can also be purchased as a bare tool (mower only). What’s great is that Redback makes a range of other tools like trimmer, chainsaws and hedge cutters that can power-share the same 40v batteries as the Redback E146CV. If you’re a fan of the brand, this is excellent news.
What’s more, if you do need to purchase additional batteries, they are readily available unlike some other brands, where spare batteries are impossible to purchase.

Performance
The Redback E146CV is a self-propelled lawn mower and this means that, if you have an uneven or large garden, you won’t need to put in anywhere near as much effort when mowing. The power drive is excellent for tackling steep inclines and will make what was once a chore, nothing short of a delight.
With a decent amount of power and a brushless motor that delivers up to 2800rpm, the high cutting speed will ensure a clean and efficient cut. While there are some reviews that state the mower doesn’t perform well on damp grass, I’d always urge you to err on the side of caution when mowing damp grass anyway, so I wouldn’t call this a fair statement. Any cordless mower will protect its motor and battery by cutting out when damp or wet grass is clogging the deck and preventing the blade from turning freely.

Deck and Blade
No products found.Mowing the garden isn’t always smooth sailing, so you need equipment that will stand up to the challenge. The great news is that the Redback E146CV features a solid steel cutting deck that offers maximum durability and collection performance. Not only this, but it won’t rust or corrode when it is stored and maintained correctly.
The deck boasts a 46cm cutting width which works well for gardens that measure up to 1000m².

Handles
One of the simplest, yet most effective features of the Redback E146CV is that it boasts incredibly comfortable handles. If you are mowing a larger garden, then this is imperative for a great and comfortable user experience.
Moreover, the handles fold at both the lower and mid points, which gives the mower a much smaller profile when it comes to storage.
Wheels
The 18cm (7-inch) front wheels are sturdy and reliable, while the 25.4cm (10-inch) rear wheels offer excellent stability and make the mower much more easy to turn. In addition, the traction system offers even greater grip on the ground which is super important if you are mowing over sloped or uneven ground.
Height Adjustment
The Redback E146CV features a choice of five cutting heights. Now, I have seen competing mowers, even those that are less high-end, with more than this, but I’m certainly not saying that this isn’t versatile enough.
The cutting heights range between 20mm and 75mm, which is pretty standard for any lawn mower and will provide you with everything you need to tackle various conditions with ease. You’ll switch between the cutting heights using the single central lever, which is as effortless as it sounds. Saying that, the low 20mm setting is nice to have as many mowers start at a higher level.
Grass Collection Bag
For people who like to take a more traditional cut and collect approach to their grass clippings, the 60 litre grass box certainly gives you enough room to do this. But what really impressed me was how good the circulation inside the box is. It tightly packs the grass cuttings so that you get the most out of it. When it’s at capacity, the full flap indicator will let you know that it is time to empty.
Moreover, this hybrid grass collection box features a strong solid lid as well as a fabric body, which gives it the perfect balance of durability and ease of storage. It’ll fold flat, so will take up hardly any space in your shed.
I found that emptying the grass collection bag was easy, and there were no obstructions preventing the grass cuttings exiting the bag. Removing and attaching the box was also easy, and once attached it fitted securely into place.

Mulching
A lot of cordless lawn mowers have one or two mowing modes, but when I tell you that the Redback E146CV has a choice of three, then there’s all the more reason to get even more excited about this amazing product.
Mulching is, for me, one of the most essential mowing features as it allows you to deliver clippings back to your lawn, giving it a good boost of nutrients. But much more than this, the Redback E146CV also features a side discharge chute to even further open up your options throughout the changing seasons. Naturally all this is in addition to the standard cut & collect method.

Safety Features
The Redback E146CV features an operator presence control lever and a safety key that prevent accidental start ups and must be activated before the mower will start.
Practicalities
I mentioned earlier that the Redback E146CV is the result of a joint venture between Redback and MowDirect. MowDirect are the sole suppliers of this product in the UK, but I am pleased to say that the company offers amazing customer support. They’ve been known to hand out free replacement batteries and remain in contact throughout the troubleshooting process, so you really couldn’t ask for any more.
In addition to this, you’ll get a 1 year mower warranty, as well as 6 months on the battery and charger. Alright, it’s not the longest warranty in the world, but for such a high quality piece of equipment, this doesn’t concern me too much.
In terms of practicalities, remember this is self-propelled cordless mower that will provide 50 minutes of continuous run-time (with a 6.0Ah battery), has the ability to mulch, collect and side discharge the grass cuttings, has a quality steel deck for robustness and durability and batteries that can be power-shared with other 40v Redback tools. So yes, a very practical piece of garden equipment indeed.

Should You Buy This Model?
No products found.The Redback E146CV is a great choice for people with medium sized gardens, although it will work well up to 1000m² which is on the large side. However, if you do have a significantly bigger garden, you might want to consider the next model up, which is the Redback E148CV that features a 48cm cutting deck. On the other hand, those with smaller lawns might do better to think about getting either the Redback E142CV with its 42cm deck, or the Redback E137C which, you guessed it, has a 37cm cutting deck. It’s all related to the size of your lawn as the features are almost the same apart from the E137C which is not self-propelled.
However, I would also suggest this lawn mower to anyone who wants something much more versatile than your average cordless tool. Since it has such a good range of mowing features and is easy to use, it will fit a variety of mowing needs.
This Redback E146CV is a mower that can compete with its petrol counterparts and more importantly, is comparable in terms of initial cost of purchase. Also, remember the longer-term cost savings in terms of fuel, oil, and servicing.
