Summary
The Hayter Harrier 48 VS 60V is a cordless lawn mower, powered by a 60v 6.0Ah battery that will provide enough runtime to cut a lawn up to 500m² (7.5Ah battery up to 955m2). It has a 48cm cutting width and 7 cutting heights that range from 13mm to 60mm, has a rear roller for a striped lawn appearance and a variable speed drive between 1.0 and 3.3mph. This mower comes with a 5 year manufacturer’s domestic warranty when serviced annually by authorised Hayter dealer.
If you are looking for a premium cordless lawn mower that covers almost all of your garden maintenance needs, then the Hayter Harrier 48 VS lawn mower is a worthwhile contender. I won’t lie, it isn’t the cheapest cordless mower out there, but it gives you the convenience of cordless, enormous power and a precise cut, making it a great alternative to a petrol mower and of course, the greener option.
I was astonished at the number of features this mower has to offer from a rear roller that splits for manoeuvrability, to an incredibly low cutting height of 13mm, the Hayter Harrier 48 VS is certainly a versatile piece of equipment.
While many of the mowers on the market today are pretty standard, Hayter is known for its premium mowers and has a reputation that is second to none. It’s no surprise then, that this mower has some excellent reviews and while it is in a collection of other similar mowers, it really does stand out from the crowd.
In my Hayter Harrier 48 VS review I’m going to be exploring some of the very best features that this amazing tool has to offer, and detailing why I think you should consider making the investment.

Features In Detail
Power System and Batteries
The Hayter Harrier 48 VS is a robust machine that harbours an amazing amount of power. Running on a 2.0kw DC motor, the powerful 60v batteries really give this machine some get up and go. You can power share the battery with other tools across the range saving you money, especially when you consider that additional 7.5Ah batteries come in at just shy of £250!
Of course, you can buy this as a bare tool if you already have batteries, so that’ll knock a little of the overall investment.
Runtime Battery Guide
- 6.0Ah covers lawns up to 500m2
- 7.5Ah covers lawns up to 955m2 (I would recommend this battery)
You’ll benefit from Power Boost technology which controls the mower’s power, delivering more or less according to the conditions. Not only does this make mowing easier, it’ll also maximise the running time between charges.
A standard 2 Amp charger is supplied with the mower, with a 5.5 Amp fast charger available as an optional extra.
The Hayter Harrier 48 VS has variable speeds between 1.0mph and 3.3mph so you can adjust this according to your own walking speed. This is just one of the many practical features of this piece of equipment that justifies the higher initial investment.
Deck and Blade
The Hayter Harrier 48 VS has an aluminium cutting deck that offers excellent durability and rust resistance. The mower is just built for the outdoors!
In terms of cutting width, you’re getting 48cm making this perfect for larger lawns. It’ll easily cover up to 500m² when combined with the 6.0Ah battery. However, if you need something slightly smaller, there is the Hayter Harrier 41 VS 60V, which is very much the same but features a smaller 41cm cutting width and runs on a slightly less powerful 1.5kw DC motor. Otherwise, you’ll still benefit from all the same features.
Alternatively, there is another cordless mower from Hayter; the Osprey 46, while this has a good 46cm cutting deck, it doesn’t come with a rear roller, which is one of the main features of the Hayter Harrier 48 VS.
Height Adjustment
One of the most outstanding things about the Hayter Harrier 48 VS is that it has an incredibly low cutting height at just 13mm. This is great for anyone who is looking to create a formal and neat-looking lawn.
However, this is far from your only option since the Hayter Harrier 48 VS features seven cutting heights in total all the way up to 60mm. They’re easy to move through with a smooth central adjustment handle and there’s even a leaf collection setting, which is one higher than the main grass settings. Great for that last mow before autumn!
Roller (Stripes)
If there is anything that really stands out about the Hayter Harrier 48 VS, it’s the excellent rear roller. While some mowers feature a very standard roller, Hayter has put a lot of thought into the design of this one.
For starters, it is ribbed meaning that it has a much better grip on the ground, leaving you with a more uniform stripe. Moreover, the roller splits in two, allowing you to turn without dragging or any difficulty.
Hayter is known to be one of the best manufacturers for mowers with a rear roller and their reputation for producing neat immaculate stripes is unbeaten. This is largely to do with the design of the roller, but can also be attributed to the heavy weight of the mower. At 42kg without the battery, you might think that it would be difficult to move (that’s where that variable speed comes in handy), but the weight of the machine means that you get much longer lasting and defined stripes.
Performance
For anyone who is looking for a cordless lawn mower that is going to give a clean and neat cut, the Hayter Harrier 48 VS is the obvious choice. I mentioned that Hayter is a premium brand and you’ll notice this in the cutting results. If you’re going for a more formal look, you won’t find anything more suited to this need.
What’s more, the Hayter Harrier 48 VS has some handy features that further boost its performance. For example, it uses Vari-pitch which allows for adjustment of the height at the front of the mower depending on how tall the grass is. In turn, this improves airflow for an all round better cut. In addition to this, the mower also features Trim-side allowing you to get closer to the edges and vastly limit the amount of trimming you’ll need to do after you’ve finished mowing.
Practicalities
On the Hayter Harrier 48 VS we see a hose wash port which is rather unusual on a cordless mower. We typically only find this feature on a petrol mower, so it was a pleasant surprise when I discovered this. Having a wash port makes keeping the mower clean so much easier. While this might seem like a small consideration in terms of maintenance, it can make a huge difference when it comes to prolonging the life of the lawn mower.
I also love the fact that the Hayter Harrier 48 VS comes with a whopping 5 year warranty. Even the batteries come with a 3 year warranty, which is pretty much unheard of with other brands. There is a catch though; you’ll void your warranty if you don’t have the mower serviced annually by a Hayter authorised dealer.
This lawn mower is also super quiet thanks to a high quality brushless motor and the most up to date technology.
Safety Features
In order to start the Hayter Harrier 48 VS, you need to use the safety key which straight away makes it safe from accidental starting.
The other safety feature, that is standard on most mowers, is the two hand safety button to prevent the machine being started accidentally. As soon as you let go of the start lever, the motor stops immediately.
Mulching
This feature is not available on this model which is pretty standard for lawn mowers that have a dedicated rear roller.

As I said earlier, there are many advantages to this lawn mower but there are a few downsides. Let me explain both so you know what you are getting and if this is the best option for you.
Should You Buy This Hayter Harrier 48 VS?
I’m not going to pretend for a second that this is an affordable mower, so if you’re looking for a bargain, then this probably isn’t the machine for you. However, if you’re willing to make an investment then the Hayter Harrier 48 VS could be just what you’re looking for. There isn’t much it can’t do and it delivers one of the best cuts I’ve seen in a long time.
For people with larger lawns who are looking for something that is as good as a petrol mower without the fumes, I’d also say this is a good choice. It’s an incredibly powerful cordless lawn mower and will make light work of even more challenging conditions. This is thanks to the many mowing features that help it glide around the garden, cutting the grass effectively without the need for multiple passes.
You get all of this convenience and power in a robust machine that’ll turn garden maintenance into much less of a chore since the Hayter Harrier 48 VS does it all for you.
To give you some guidance on which type of customer would suit this model best, below I’ve listed the categories they fall under:
- People with gardens up to 955m2 in size (with 7.5Ah battery) – Recommended for 500m2 lawns.
- People who do like a striped lawn.
- Those who want a self-propelled variable speed drive.
- Those that like to power share batteries with other garden tools.
- People who want generous 7 cutting heights that range from 13mm to 60mm.
- People who like to cut their lawn exceptionally low for formal appearance.
- Those who like the convenience of having no power cord or have limited or no access to a power source in the garden.
- People who like to purchase a trusted premium brand with good after sales support.
Conclusion
The Hayter Harrier 48 VS is an amazing cordless machine. It has a wealth of features that a lot of other cordless mowers could only dream of. With a low cutting height, hose wash port, cut to edge, power boost, a split rear roller and so much more, this is a mower that warrants getting excited about. As far as premium lawn mowers go, I’d say that the Hayter Harrier 48 VS is up there with the best!

Mark, any chance you can do a run down on the latest cordless rear roller mowers? The Hayter 48 looks fab but they don’t have any local servicing dealers near where I am (up North). The nearest one is 20 miles away! Any chance you can review the new Cobra, Webber and Stiga twinclip?
Hi Idris
Thanks for your message. Yes you will need to have the Hayter serviced at an authorised dealer to maintain the warranty.
I will be reviewing some more higher-end mowers later this year and was going to test a Hayter and Stiga mower.

How good is the Hayter 48 at cutting a wet lawn?
Hi Jeremy
Yes not too bad, this is one of the better mowers at cutting wet/damp grass. You are always going to get clumping and a blockage of the chute if you don’t clear and empty regularly.
The Power Boost feature does a good job of detecting when things are getting tough and ups the power. Please always refer to the manual for safe use of the mower.
