Summary
The Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-850 is a cordless lawn mower with 7 cutting heights ranging from 25mm to 80mm, a 44cm cutting width and a 50 litre hybrid grass collection box. The mower is supplied with a 6Ah battery that charges in around 185 minutes but has the ability to charge to 80% in 144 minutes. The Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-850 Cordless mower is designed for lawns up to 850m² in size.
One of the best things about having a battery-powered lawn mower is the convenience; you can whizz around the garden without being bogged down by cables and without the cumbersome design of many of the petrol models. But oftentimes, this comes with a sacrifice, and typically, this is power.
However, when you look at the excellent battery system that comes with this Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-850 mower, it isn’t difficult to appreciate how this could be a step up in the world of cordless garden equipment. It is fitted with a 36v 6.0Ah battery which is more than adept for the job, especially when you consider that this mower is designed for a garden measuring up to 850m².
In addition to this, you are getting a range of features that make mowing so much easier. From the large grass bag, which folds away for storage, to the reduced noise output for a more pleasant experience, you might finally stop seeing cutting the grass as a chore and more of an enjoyable pastime!
Main Features
- 44cm cutting deck
- 36v lithium-ion battery
- Ergonomic and ErgoSlide handles
- 50-litre, foldable grass box
- 7 cutting height positions
- ProSilence for quieter operation
- Leaf collection blades
- Lightweight design
- Batteries can be shared across other Bosch 36v tools
Power System And Batteries
One of the biggest problems with cordless mowers is that the power system simply isn’t great enough to imitate the cutting power of the petrol mower. And no, I’m not going to tell you that this mower will rival the power of a petrol, but then you are not purchasing this mower to cut a rough, undulating meadow.
As far as a cordless model goes, you are getting a decent power system that will give you a good result for the average UK lawn. The Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-850 comes with a single 36v 6.0Ah battery which gives you a good run time and enough power to tackle a 850m² garden with ease.
If you already have a battery, there is the option to buy this as a bare tool which will also save you quite a lot of money, since the batteries are what pushes the price up on these mowers.

Features In Detail
Battery Charger
If you are in a hurry, there is the option to use the Quick Charge feature which will top the battery up with juice in just 144 minutes, this will get you to 80% charge. However, if you want full power then you will need to charge for 185 minutes, but that is still quite a reasonable amount of time for 6.0Ah battery.
Performance
As I have mentioned, the power of this mower is pretty impressive for a battery-operated model so as you would expect, it gives a decent performance.
On top of making light work of a medium to large-sized garden, you will also notice that the mower boasts the AdvancedRotak grass combs. This allows you to reach the edges of the lawn much more easily without having to dig out the lawn edger or grass trimmer. If you are pushed for time or want to be able to get everything done with one tool this could be the answer.
You will notice that this Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-850 mower has the ability to step up the power when the terrain becomes tougher. It senses when more power is needed and adjusts accordingly. Why is this important? Because it increases the run time of the battery as the blade is only using the necessary power to cut the varying thicknesses and lengths of the lawn.
In summary, this Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-850 mower is packed with features not found in many other brands that all contribute towards the overall performance and functionality of this mower.
Deck and Blade
This mower has a 44cm deck which is the same as the smaller model, the Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-750. The only difference between these models is that with the 36-750 you get a smaller 4.0Ah battery compared to the 6.0Ah battery provided with the 36-850. Conversely, if you need something smaller in terms of the deck size, this mower has another younger brother Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-660 with a 42cm cutting deck.
But one of the most notable features about this rotary blade is that it boasts a leaf collection system which allows you to collect, shred and dispose of leaves in the grass box, meaning that you will not need to clear the lawn before getting started.
Cutting Diameter
I have already touched on the 44cm cutting width of this mower, but it is important to clear up any confusion. In most cases, the name of the mower will feature the cutting diameter. In this case, you would expect ‘850’ would mean that the cutting width is 850mm – that would be a pretty generous mower, to say the least!
However, in this instance, the name of the mower refers to the square metres that the machine is designed to cover. So for example, this Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-850 is designed for lawns up to 850m² and the Bosch UniversalRotak 36-560 is designed for lawns up to 560m². When choosing a mower from this range, be sure to keep this in mind.
Mulching
Whilst this mower doesn’t come with a mulching plug supplied, it can be purchased as an optional extra for around £30. For your convenience I have included a link below.

Handles
Some lawn mowers can be incredibly uncomfortable to use since the handles are set in one position. If you force yourself to repeatedly stand in a way that doesn’t allow for correct posture, you are likely to struggle with back pain and other unpleasant symptoms.
But Bosch has thought of this when creating this machine and as such, the ErgoSlide handle allows you to easily adjust the handle to suit your height, giving you a much more comfortable and pleasant mowing experience.
Also, the handles on this Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-850 mower are not your simple metal bar, they are Ergonomically designed for comfort and to allow the handles to be held in several different positions, whilst still being able to operate the mower. I found this particularly useful when mowing around flower beds single-handedly as you can see from the video above.
Rear Roller (Stripes)
This Bosch Advanced Rotak 36-850 is supplied with a rear roller, however due to the lightweight nature of this mower, the stripes will not be long lasting as you would achieve with a heavier petrol lawn mower or a dedicated lawn roller.
Please Note: If you purchase any Bosch battery mower complete with the battery and charger, it will be fitted with a rear roller. If you purchase the Bosch mower as a “Bare Tool” then NO rear roller is fitted.
Wheels
This lawn mower sits on four equally-sized wheels which gives you a good level of stability. In some mowers, larger rear wheels are preferred but with such a lightweight model, these wheels are more than fit for purpose.
Height Adjustment
Depending on the time of year, you might need to cut the grass at different levels, and this means that you need a mower with adjustable cutting height. You will find this in most models but how easy this is to alter can vary greatly.
Fortunately, Bosch has got you covered with the unique integral height adjustment system that allows you to adjust the cutting height at the push of a button. This is one of the simplest methods that I have ever seen and is certainly a game-changer.
The Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-850 mower can be adjusted through generous seven cutting heights ranging from 25mm to 80mm, giving you a diverse selection required for changing seasons and lawn conditions.
Grass Collection Box
If there is anything to get excited about with this mower, the grass collection box has to be it. Not only can it hold up to 50 litres of grass clippings, but it will also fold flat for much easier storage. In all the mowers I have tested I do prefer these hybrid grass collection boxes with the cloth sides (for better air circulation) and solid top and base (for enhanced durability). As mentioned above this allows the box the ability to fold flat.
Another feature of this grass box is the “Grass Box Full Flap Indicator” allowing you to easily see when the box needs emptying.
Often, you will find that a mower will have a collapsible handle but the grass box is not always a consideration where storage is concerned, yet it is one of the largest components.
If you are short on storage space, this is a model definitely worth considering.
Practicalities
If the easy storage and ErgoSlide handle weren’t enough to demonstrate what a practical and useful mower this is, there is more to impress you.
It is no secret that cutting the grass is not always the quietest activity but with the ProSilence feature, noise levels are reduced by up to 30%, giving you one of the quietest mows of your life.
In addition, this is a superbly lightweight piece of equipment so even if you have struggled to push a mower around your garden in the past, this one shouldn’t be a challenge. There is also a central and well-balanced handle located on the body of the mower to allow it to be easily lifted and moved to the shed or garage for storage.

Pros and Cons
Should You Buy This Model?
If you are looking for a lightweight lawn mower that has many helpful features and functions, but at the same time is not overly complicated to operate, then I would highly recommend this Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-850 model. Some mowers have features (gimmicks) that simply do not enhance the process of mowing your lawn, however everything that Bosch have included on this mower makes the task of mowing your lawn that much more efficient and enjoyable.
These innovative features are there to serve a purpose. For example, the lower noise levels (ProSilence), easy to adjust cutting heights (single central button), ability to collect leaves (LeafCollect) make this the ideal machine for people who don’t have a lot of time or who do not want a complicated bit of kit that requires an engineering degree to understand.
If you have a smaller lawn, you may be better off with one of its younger brothers (Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-750 or Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-660), but all of the mowers in the range will give you the same thing; power, reliability and simplicity.
To help you with your decision above is a handy comparison table to show the differences between the UniversalRotak and the AdvancedRotak models.
Conclusion
Bosch is a reputable brand that has brought us some incredible products over the years and they do not disappoint with this nifty and feature rich Bosch Advanced Rotak 36-850 cordless mower. It is a large but lightweight and powerful mower without the complications of a petrol equivalent model.
The Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-850 is up to Bosch’s high standards in terms of materials, build quality where no short cuts have been taken. Yes this mower is going to cost more than some of its competitors, but you are getting what you pay for. It is true that a cheaper model will cut the lawn equally as well, however the mower will not last as long and will not have all of the features mentioned above to make the job quicker and easier.
Lastly the benefits and convenience of a cordless mower, over that of a petrol or corded mower, are well known and again justify the initial investment of the Bosch Advanced Rotak 36-850.

Hi.
Bought the Bosch machine approx 18 months ago have a reasonable amount of grass frond and back ,slightly too much to do in one charge . Loved the machine light and easy to use. However after just 18 months the battery has failed and now will not charge. Have phoned Bosch they say the battery is only guaranteed 12 months . A replacement is nearly £200!!
I’m going back to petrol.
Hi Steve
That does not sound right, I believe the battery has a 2 year warranty same as the mower, you just can’t extend the battery to 3 years when you register your product.

Thanks

Hi Mark,
Just taken delivery of a new 36-850, all seems fairly straightforward, setting the battery to charge so that we can try it out. But what is the second little battery for ? It fits into the same place as the big one – is it for extending the mow when the big one runs out ? No indication in the book of words …
We’ve been using a smaller Bosch cordless for some years, but now we’ve moved into a big rough garden we need something a bit tougher. This looks good – but what about that little 2.0 Ah battery ?
Cheers, Malcolm
Hi Malcolm, this is very odd as this mower should come with 1x 6.0Ah Lithium ion battery only. Did you get the 6.0Ah in the box? If so, then the second 2.0Ah battery must be a free extra that can be used in other 36v Bosch tools.
Let us know.
Hi Mark. Love your site – it is hugely helpful!
I’m thinking of getting the Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-850, but my sole concern is the effectiveness of the mulching plug.
From what I’ve read on the Amazon reviews of the plug, it may not actually keep the cut blades within the cutting chamber (so that they are cut a second/third time into even finer pieces before being propelled onto the lawn), but instead it merely directs the ‘first cut’ blades from the cutting chamber onto the lawn (rather than into the grassbox)?
I’m a big fan of mulching, so I’m keen to get a mower that can both collect and mulch grass effectively; do you think this machine does a good enough job at mulching?
Thanks!
Hi David
Thanks for you positive feedback. The mulching plug will ensure that the cuttings are cut multiple times if inserted into the machine.
Naturally this will never be as good as a dedicated mulching mower that does not have the option to collect the cuttings. The blade on this Bosch mower needs to accommodate both collection and mulching of the cuttings.

Hope this helps.
