My Overall Rating

GTECH CLM50 Lawnmower ReviewThe Gtech CLM50 Cordless Lawnmower is a new lawnmower from Gtech for 2021 that has a 42 cm cutting deck and charges in a very respectable 1 hour. The run time is up to 40 minutes depending on the condition of the lawn. It is supplied with a huge 50 litre grass box, is lightweight at only 13.5 kg, has 6 height adjustments settings from 30mm to 80mm and comes with a 30-day money back guarantee.

Some time ago, I compiled a detailed review of the predecessor, the Gtech 2.0 lawnmower and I have to say, I was very impressed with what this machine was capable of. Moving forward, I noticed that Gtech was launching a new and improved version of this mower, so naturally, I wanted to test it again. I got in touch with Gtech to find out what they had done to make the Gtech CLM50 so much better compared to the 2.0 model and I have to admit, I was surprised by what I was told.

You see, while both mowers are equally excellent, this ‘new and upgraded’ version doesn’t differ all that much. What Gtech has done is to alter the colour and change the dimensions very slightly. In a way that’s very pleasing because the 2.0 mower was such a good tool. But then again, it’s hardly the improvement I was hoping for.

Nonetheless, the Gtech CLM50 has some great features. With a 42cm cutting deck, this is the ideal tool for medium to large lawns. Anything up to around 400m² and you’re good to go. Moreover, the 48v lithium-ion battery rapid charges in just one hour and gives you up to 40 minutes run time; that’s not to be sniffed at.

If you’re in the market for a practical cordless lawnmower, the Gtech CLM50 is a great choice since it is incredibly lightweight and easy to handle. It folds flat for storage, meaning it’ll take up far less space in the shed and comes with a very generous six cutting height options.

Gtech is a company that has made a very solid name for itself in recent years. Whether you’re into their vacuum cleaner range or their excellent selection of outdoor tools, this is a mower you need to check out. In this detailed Gtech lawnmower CLM50 review, I’ll be giving you a rundown of its most essential features.

Gtech CLM50 Cordless Lawnmower Video Review

Power System

Gtech CLM50 Battery

Just like its predecessor, the Gtech CLM50 runs on a 48v lithium-ion battery. This is pretty standard but what leapt out at me from the get-go was how quickly this battery charges. With a rapid charger included in the package, you can be ready to mow in just 60 minutes.

There are a lot of mowers out there that take hours to reach 100% and this can be frustrating when you’re hanging around and waiting to make the cut. Once the battery reaches full charge, you will get 40 minutes of uninterrupted cutting. Of course, this will depend on the lawn conditions, but in general, this should be more than enough to mow the entire lawn in one go.

I was also very impressed with the battery gauge that is easy to understand and uses a light system. You certainly won’t be getting caught out by a battery that drains unexpectedly.

Gtech CLM50 Lawnmower Review

One of the things that irks a lot of homeowners, is that getting that mower right up to the edge of the lawn can be tricky. If you have walls, fences or other things around the edge of the lawn, you’ll find it much easier to get a close cut thanks to the blade that runs along the underside of the mower. For anyone who is looking to save time trimming once the mow is complete, this is an excellent feature to have.

Moreover, this mower is so easy to handle. Not only is it lightweight, but the nimble wheels are designed to move freely around the garden rather than just in a straight line. Although if it’s straight lines you’re after, this one doesn’t come with a rear roller, which is something of a disappointment; although certainly not a deal breaker.

Deck and Blade

With a 42cm cutting deck, the Gtech CLM50 is the ideal mower for gardens up to 400 square metres. Not only will the battery provide enough time for this size of lawn, but the generous deck will cover much more grass in each pass. That said, there’s nothing wrong with using it on a smaller lawn.

The single carbon steel blade is lightweight and effective, making a clean and efficient cut. If it’s durability you are looking for, this type of metal blade will stand the test of time, especially when  you compare it to its plastic alternatives. Typically, it runs at 2800rpm but with a smart sensor, this power can be automatically increased to 3500rpm if more oomph is needed. You would think that a single blade (Omniblade) will cause issues with vibrations, however the blade is perfectly counterbalanced by a weight that eliminates any vibrations from the spinning blade.

Height Adjustment

Gtech CLM50 Height Adjustment

Depending on the time of year, you may need to alter the height at which you cut your lawn. Most mowers will come with some level of height adjustment, but not all are as simple to operate as the Gtech CLM50. The central height adjustment lever is smooth and so quick to use. Simply move it from one position to another and watch the mower move to your desired height; then all you need to do is get on with mowing.

What’s more this Gtech lawnmower features 6 cutting heights ranging between 30mm and 80mm giving you a lot more versatility and flexibility in how you cut your lawn. It would have been nice to have a slightly lower cutting height for those who like a very close bowling green cut. However this is not always a good option for the health of the grass.

Storage can be a nightmare at times, especially with cumbersome mowers like the old petrol ones. With the Gtech CLM50, the folding handles make popping this into the shed so much easier. Some mowers feature handles that only fold down once, but this one has a handle which dual folds, ensuring that you have a completely flat tool for storing.

Grass Collection Box

Gtech CLM50 Grass BoxIf you’re mowing a large lawn then you’re also going to need a bigger grass box and this Gtech lawnmower comes with one that can hold up to 50 litres of clippings. While the mower may not have a mulching plug, which is something that a lot of people prefer, it makes up for it in other ways. Not only is the grass box very spacious, but it also has a full indicator making it much easier to know when you need to stop to empty. But with all that space it won’t be very often.

What’s more, the grass box has a unique design that allows it to fold flat. The top and base are made from plastic but the sides are made from cloth. In some cases, the cloth used for grass bags isn’t the best quality, but Gtech has gone above and beyond and used an extremely durable material that will last as long as the mower.

With such a lightweight tool, mowing the lawn suddenly feels like much less of a chore. The Gtech CLM50 weighs in at just 13.5kg so it’s incredibly easy to move around. If you’ve long battled with a heavy mower, this will certainly be a breath of fresh air. Add to this the fact that your comfort has been considered with things like padded handles and easy to reach controls, then tending to the garden is something of a dream.

In addition to this, the easy storage of the Gtech CLM50 means that you won’t have to struggle to put this away at the end of the mow. And of course, you’ve got all the other practicalities of cordless mowers such as the lack of a power cord and being more environmentally friendly.

Safety Features

Gtech CLM50 PracticalitiesIt is so important to have a lawnmower that operates safely, especially if there is a high risk of an accidental start up. For this reason, you will find that pretty much all cordless lawnmowers come with a safety key, and the Gtech CLM50 is no exception.

These small keys plug into a port on the top of the mower and must be turned in order for the mower to work. On top of this, there is a push button that must be engaged as well as the start triggers, so you’re getting something that’s really safe and yet still easy to use.

Roller (Stripes)

Do you like a striped lawn? Well, sorry the Gtech CLM50 does NOT have a roller at the rear.

If you simply have to have a striped lawn then you can either purchase a separate roller or you may want to consider the Flymo 300 as it does have a rear roller.

This mower does NOT have a mulching facility. If you want to learn about mulching and the advantages, then click here.

  1. Handles do not slide up and down for height adjustment.
  2. No rear roller for striped lawn appearance.
  3. Price – cheaper alternatives available (but not as good).

As with the original Gtech mower 2.0, I really struggled with this mower to find any significant downsides. The features are great and all seem to work well for a mower at this price point. The build quality and reliability cannot be faulted, it performs as you would expect. So just be aware of the above points to ensure they are not important to you when purchasing your next mower.

Should You Buy This Model?

Gtech CLM50 ConclusionIf you are looking for a cordless lawnmower that is up there with the best, then you would be hard pushed to find something quite as good as the Gtech CLM50. This is ideal for people who want something no nonsense but not no frills; with an enormous amount of power for a cordless mower and a clean and efficient cut, this tool is perfect for keeping your lawn neat and well-maintained.

I have to admit that this mower may not be the ideal petrol replacement, if that is what you are looking for, as there are other brands that would be a better choice. The range of EGO mowers are better suited to those looking to convert from petrol to cordless. Having said that, this Gtech will not disappoint for those who have larger lawn, but also follow a regular mowing schedule.

You’ll get a 30 day money back guarantee when you buy this mower, but to be honest, I don’t think you’d use it. Through my own experience, I can confidently say that, while there are no major upgrades from the 2.0, this is an excellent machine that you will thoroughly enjoy using. And if you can enjoy garden chores, then Gtech must be doing something right.

To give you some guidance on which type of customer would suit this model best, below I’ve got a list of the categories they would fall under:

  • People with gardens up to 400m² in size.
  • Those that do NOT require a striped lawn.
  • People that like a large grass box for less emptying.
  • Likes a quick charge option (60 minutes).
  • Storage is limited as handles and grass box fold flat.
  • People who would like a 30 day trial period to try the mower out.

Of course this is open to interpretation, so if you don’t fall under every single category then don’t worry I’m sure you’ll still love this product. It has loads of great features that I’m sure you make use of even if you’re not its perfect customer.

The Gtech CLM50 is a nifty lawnmower that certainly packs a punch. It doesn’t have quite as many features as some other mowers and it does come at a higher price. But what you get for this are convenience and quality. You can feel that this is a well-made piece of equipment and everything about it is just easy.

There’s no complex operations or messing around; simply charge the battery in an hour and get on with the job at hand. As a new and improved model, you might have expected a little more than just a colour change and slightly different dimensions, but I really don’t think it matters. When you’re using a mower as good as this one, everything else fades into insignificance.

  1. I had this mower delivered yesterday and I can’t get the green clips that hold the handle parts together to clip down. Been trying for 2 hours!!

    1. HI Debbie, please ensure that you loosen off the handle before trying to fold it / lock it into place. You have to get it just right so that it isn’t too loose but loose enough to enable you to close it.
You can always give Gtech a call, and their customer service should be able to help you. Thanks
