If you want a hedge trimmer for lighter garden work then the Makita cordless trimmer is a great choice. It doesn’t come with the battery or charger so you will either need to already have these or be willing to buy them separately. However, the cost of the body is far from bank breaking for this premium brand, so it is worth considering.
This hedge trimmer is lightweight and has a brilliant selection of features that make it ideal for the domestic gardener. I was particularly impressed by the anti-vibration system and the user-friendliness of this tool; but more on that later on.
Performance
The Makita DUH523Z cordless hedge trimmer is the perfect option for people who maintain their gardens well and need something to help with this upkeep. While it might not be suitable for extremely heavy work or thicker branches, if you’re looking to trim back your pruned hedges, this will make light work of this job.
What’s more, the Makita hedge trimmers feature an incredibly durable blade that will glide through the foliage with ease. You won’t find yourself straining with each cut, which is great for quick touch-ups. The blade is coated in nickel giving it a stain-free design that won’t wear quickly. However, when it is time to switch up the blade, doing so is quick and easy and can be done by the user.

Features
- The Makita DUH523Z trimmer works with an 18v battery putting it right in the middle of the road in terms of power. The battery is not included in the box so you will need to purchase this separately, as well as the charger. However, with a generous cutting time and handy LED blinkers to let you know when the battery is about to run dry, you couldn’t really ask for much more.
- This hedge trimmer has an anti-vibration system that makes using it so much more comfortable than some of its competitors. This is thanks to the five internal cushions that absorb much of the energy produced by the motor so you won’t feel a thing.
- The blades measure 52cm and give you a cutting width of 15mm which is perfect for light to medium gardening and again, I have to point out that they are nickel-coated.
- The handle is coated with a comfortable rubber grip for a much more pleasant user experience.
- The Makita cordless hedge trimmer is lightweight weighing just a little over 3kg. This is ideal for working higher up as the arms won’t get tried as quickly. It is also perfect for older people who find that their strength isn’t what it once was.
- With two hand operation, this is a very safe tool to use. The motor will not activate unless both the top handle and switch are engaged.
Value

The Makita DUH523Z cordless hedge trimmer is one of the less expensive tools I have looked at. However, it does pay to keep in mind that this is due to the fact that the battery and charger are not included. When you factor in the cost of purchasing these, you’ll be paying much the same as other tools in this class.
That being said, with a durable blade and some nice features, you are getting a relatively good deal. The only thing that I would point out here is that since this isn’t designed for heavy-duty work, but is perfect for the average garden environment.
Warranty
Makita DUH523Z offers its customers a standard one-year warranty. However, this can be extended; the details of this can be found on their website. In a nutshell, you’ll need to send the tool off to be serviced by the manufacturer within the first 12 months, if you want to extend the warranty. I’ll leave it to you to decide whether that is worth the hassle.
