What do Self-Propelled Lawn Mowers Do?
When it comes to buying a lawn mower, there are so many things to consider. I’ve often been asked about the various terms used in the product descriptions of lawn mowers and one that causes the most confusion is self-propelled lawn mowers.
Quite simply, these mowers have a speed control lever that can be adjusted by the user and the power of the engine drives the mower forward, with the need for you to push it.
There are naturally many pros and cons to this design so I’ve put together this guide to help you decide whether a self-propelled lawn mower is right for your garden.
Understanding Self-Propelled Lawn Mowers
I’m going to assume, for the purposes of this article, that you have previously used a push mower. These machines are designed to be pushed along by the user and cut the grass as you pass over it.
Where self propelled lawn mowers differ is that the need to push them is eliminated. In push mowers, the motor provides power to only the blades. However, with a self-propelled model there is a drive shaft that connects the motor to the wheels, enabling it to also power them.
This is hugely beneficial when mowing large or complex areas as much of the physical strain is taken out of mowing.
Key Advantages Of Self-Propelled Lawn Mowers
There are lots of excellent reasons to invest in a self-propelled lawn mower. These machines make tackling large or hilly lawns much less stressful and if you struggle to move your lawn mower around the grass, they’ll make it much easier. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the key advantages of these machines.
Ease Of Use
One of the biggest benefits of using a self-propelled lawn mower is that they are so simple and easy to use. You simply need to guide the mower in the direction you wish to go and it’ll do the hard work for you.
What’s more, many of these mowers come with variable speed so you can set them to a speed that matches your pace of walking. However, it is worth noting that not all self-propelled mowers benefit from this feature so it’s important to check the product description if this is something you’re keen to have.
Time Efficiency
If you have a large lawn then you’ll know that using a push mower can mean spending a decent amount of time mowing. On a hot day, the last thing you want is to have to spend more time than necessary maintaining your garden but a self-propelled mower means you won’t have to.
These mowers make cutting large lawns much faster and if there are any slopes or inclines, they’ll make light work of them compared to you having to lug a heavy push mower up and down hills.
Less time mowing and more time enjoying a perfectly manicured garden.
Reduced Physical Effort
For many people, using a push mower can be extremely difficult. If you have limited mobility, back issues or any other physical problems, mowing the lawn can feel like a real challenge.
But much, if not all of the physical effort of tending to your lawn is taken away when you use a self-propelled lawn mower.
Even for those who don’t typically have problems mowing the lawn will find using a self propelled mower a lot kinder on their bodies. No more aching shoulders or back from pushing a hefty mower around the lawn; that’s something we can all get on board with.
Comparative Analysis: Self-Propelled vs Push Mowers
If you’re currently considering buying a new lawn mower then I’d strongly recommend comparing features to find a machine that perfectly matches your needs. Many of the features on push mowers and their self-propelled counterparts are the same but there are some things that may differ slightly.
Power Source
Push mowers come in several different forms; petrol, electric and manual. Petrol models are known for their superior power but they require a lot of maintenance and can be difficult to use. On the other hand, corded and cordless electric mowers are well-loved because of how convenient they are. That said, they’re not quite as powerful or robust as a petrol model. Finally, manual lawn mowers, such as the reel mower are the most eco-friendly and lightweight of all push mowers but, since they’re not powered, they do require a lot of physical effort from the user.
When it comes to self-propelled lawn mowers, you’ll find that most models are petrol. However, there are more and more electric models being launched onto the market so if you’re a fan of these then it’s good news.
I’d recommend considering the size of your lawn when choosing between a petrol and electric self-propelled lawn mower. If you have a very big lawn or dense grass then the power of a petrol model will serve you well. While there are plenty of cordless self-propelled mowers, you need to consider whether the battery run time is compatible with the size of your lawn.
Cutting Width
If you look at all of the available lawn mowers out there, whether push or self-propelled, you’ll notice that there is a huge range of cutting widths.
The cutting width determines how much lawn will be covered in each pass. For example, if you have a 38 cm lawn mower, this will cover a 38 cm wide path as you move the mower around. The wider the cutting width, the less time it will take to cover your lawn. That said, it is possible to get something too large that will make getting into those tight spots very tricky.
Since self-propelled lawn mowers are larger and designed to tackle huge lawns, you’ll often find that they come with larger widths compared to push mowers. It’s a good idea to find a mower that’s going to allow you to get your lawn cut in the quickest time without affecting the manoeuvrability.
Terrain Suitability
Push lawn mowers are designed to handle flat surfaces which are generally small to medium in size. If your lawn is larger than around 500 m² to 750 m² then you’ll likely get away with using a push mower. Any larger than this and it’s probably best to choose a self-propelled model to get things done much more quickly and put less strain on your body.
Moreover, you have to consider the type of terrain in your garden. While a push lawn mower is ideal for flat lawns, it will be very difficult to move up a slope. However, self-propelled lawn mowers make tackling those hills and inclines much less stressful. What’s more, they make the activity a lot safer and there’s less chance of you losing control of the machine.
A Few Drawbacks To Consider
I think that self-propelled lawn mowers are fantastic. They make mowing much easier on your body and you’ll cover large areas in no time. However, in the interests of being objective, I think it’s important that I give you a few points to consider that may affect the suitability of a self-propelled lawn mower for your garden.
- Self-propelled lawn mowers are much heavier than push mowers. While they are easy to manoeuvre thanks to the self-propelled drive, you still have to consider whether you’ll be comfortable lifting the mower from the shed to the lawn
- Since the motor and internal systems are more complex than a push mower, self-propelled lawn mowers require more maintenance and there’s more than could go wrong. This could result in costly repairs.
- If you’re shopping on a budget then a self-propelled mower might not be right for you as they’re typically much more expensive owing to the advanced technology.
Pro and Cons of Self-Propelled Lawn Mowers
Pros – What are the benefits of a Self-Propelled Lawn Mower?
- Easy to use: Self-propelled lawn mowers are easier to use than push mowers because they don’t require as much physical effort to push around the garden lawn.
- Saves time: With a self-propelled lawn mower, you can cover more ground in less time, which is especially helpful if you have a larger lawn.
- Better for hilly terrain: Self-propelled lawn mowers are better for hilly terrain because they can easily climb inclines and hills without the need for extra effort from the operator.
Cons – What are the disadvantages of a Self-Propelled Lawn Mower?
- More expensive: Self-propelled lawn mowers are generally more expensive than push mowers, which can be a disadvantage for those on a tight budget.
- Heavier: Self-propelled lawn mowers are typically heavier than push mowers, which can make them more difficult to maneuver in tight spaces or around obstacles.
- More maintenance: Self-propelled lawn mowers have more moving parts than push mowers, which means they may require more maintenance and repairs over time.
Conclusion
Self propelled lawn mowers are the ideal tool for large gardens with uneven terrain. They make light work of what might otherwise be quite an ordeal for your body so are also considered to be a lot safer.
However, while there are several clear advantages to self-propelled lawn mowers, they’re not for everyone. It’s vital that you compare the features of each type and make a decision that’s right for your garden. For example, if you only have a small, even lawn then spending a considerable amount of money on an expensive self-propelled lawn mower is overkill.
On the other hand, if you have a large or uneven lawn or you struggle physically using a push mower then one of these advanced machines will likely be a huge benefit and make gardening much more enjoyable.

The Hyundai HYM80LI460SP is supplied with a mulching and side-discharge plug, two safety keys and is covered by a 3 year Hyundai warranty. I finally got my hands on this Hyundai 80 volt cordless mower, and could not wait to test it out on my 500m² lawn, to see if all the positive feedback I have received is justified.
Just bear in mind there is also a push version available (without the self-propelled drive) and this is the model I used in my video review below - Hyundai HYM80LI460P (all other features are identical).
Before we get into the review of this Hyundai HYM80LI460SP Cordless Lawnmower, I think it’s worth saying a quick word about cordless self-propelled lawn mowers in general. If you asked me 3 or 4 years ago if a cordless self-propelled lawn mower is any good and worth the investment, I would have said a resounding no! But in 2022, the battery and motor technology, and indeed, mower technology in general, has improved to such an extent that my answer now would be, most definitely "yes". In this Hyundai HYM80LI460SP review you will see why cordless mowers, and in particular self-propelled cordless mowers, are now a real and viable alternative to petrol mowers. Main Features
This Mower Is Suitable For
ConclusionThe Hyundai HYM80LI460SP is a mower that is at the top of its game. It is a diverse piece of equipment that will stand the test of time thanks to the powerful, long-lasting batteries and robust outer steel shell of the machine. Mowing has never been more simple, and this is largely owing to the self-propelled drive of this piece of equipment but can also be attributed to the large grass collection bag, ample cutting width, variable cutting heights and options. In terms of modern mowers, you won’t find anything quite as effective and impressive as this. | Pros

Hayter Hawk Review (36 - 43) 60V Cordless Mower | 36 | Cut and Collect | 7 (19mm - 70mm) | Folding Handles Rear Roller (Stripes) Safety Key Self Propelled Variable Speed Vertical Storage | 84 | The Hayter Hawk 60V is a cordless lawn mower powered by a range of 60V batteries that will provide enough runtime to cut a lawn up to 300m² with a 4.0Ah battery (7.5Ah battery up to 600m2). It offers either a 36cm or 43cm cutting width with 7 cutting heights that range from 19mm to 70mm and has a rear roller for a striped lawn appearance. The AD model is self-propelled with a variable speed drive between 1.8mph and 2.5mph. This mower comes with a 3 year manufacturer's domestic warranty when serviced annually by an authorised Hayter dealer. Before I get into the nitty gritty of the batteries for this battery powered lawn mower, I’d like to point out that you do need to purchase the batteries separately. Of course you can also buy the Hayter Hawk as a bare tool if you already have compatible batteries. What’s great, however, is that you have a good number of options. There are four batteries to choose from; a 2.5Ah battery although this is only suitable for the 36 Push Hayter Hawk, 4.0Ah, 6.0Ah or 7.5Ah batteries which can be used across all of these tools. Moreover, each of these 60V batteries can be power shared with other tools in the Toro garden tool range. You will need to choose your batteries in line with the size of your lawn. For example, the 4.0Ah battery will handle lawns up to 300 square metres, but Hayter states that it can be used on lawns up to 900m². However, I doubt that this is the case on a single charge even with its adaptable power boost function. With this battery powered mower, you will need to purchase the battery charger separately, but again, you’ve got options. There is a standard charger which will fully boost the 7.5Ah battery in three hours and the 6.0Ah battery in 2.3 hours. This charger is also suitable for the 2.5Ah battery which it’ll recharge in as little as an hour! Alternatively, you might opt for the fast charger. Naturally, this will cost a little more, but it comes with the advantage of being able to refill the 7.5Ah battery in just 66 minutes! The 6.0Ah battery will be ready to go again in just shy of an hour with the rapid charger. Buying the batteries separately should be considered an investment and this can put some people off, but when you consider how efficient they are and that the 7.5Ah can handle up to 900 square metres, it’s an investment worth making. Main Features
ConclusionHaving spent some time looking at the Hayter Hawk, I can confidently say that this is an excellent piece of equipment. OK, your first thought might be how much? But once you realise what a great litter performer this is and how easy it makes maintaining your lawn, you’ll quickly understand why it’s worth the investment. | Pros

There’s so much to love about this tool and in my Hayter Osprey 46 review, I’ll be taking you through a deep dive of the features. Let’s not waste any more time and get started. Main Features

Hayter Harrier 41 VS (377) 60V Review - Cordless Mower | 41 | Cut and Collect | 7 (13mm - 60mm) | Folding Handles Hose Wash Port Leaf Collect Rear Roller (Stripes) Safety Key Self Propelled Variable Speed | 85 | The Hayter Harrier 41 VS 60V is a cordless lawn mower, powered by a 60v 6.0Ah battery that will provide enough runtime to cut a lawn up to 300m² (7.5Ah battery up to 600m² max). It has a 41cm cutting width and 7 cutting heights that range from 13mm to 60mm, has a rear roller for a striped lawn appearance and a variable speed drive between 1.0 and 3.3mph. I recently talked about the Hayter Harrier 48 VS cordless mower which is a gigantic cordless lawnmower made for large gardens. But then I got to thinking; does this premium brand offer anything smaller for people with not such large lawns. I’m pleased to say that the answer to that question is yes! The Hayter Harrier 41 VS is great for gardens up to 600m² and aside from having a 1.5kw motor as opposed to the 2.0kw motor on the 48, the deck size is the only difference. If you’re looking for a cordless lawn mower that will be a viable petrol alternative then I’d strongly recommend giving this one a chance. OK, it’s something of an investment but you’re paying for superior quality and a cut that’ll blow your socks off! The main feature of this lawn mower is the heavy rear roller that gives lasting stripes and a wonderfully formal look to the lawn. But there are plenty of other things to get excited about, so let’s take a deep dive with my Hayter Harrier 41 VS review. Main Features
This Mower Is Suitable For
ConclusionMore and more manufacturers are throwing out cordless mowers and I have to say that some are shockingly inferior. But that is not the case with the Hayter Harrier 41 VS; this is a premium lawn mower that has a range of useful features that make maintaining your garden something of a joy. The mower has variable speeds, a low cutting height, cuts to the edge of the lawn, a very effective rear roller and so much more. I can’t think of any reason why anyone wouldn’t love using this tool! | Pros

Einhell GE-CM 36/47 S HW Review | 47 | Cut and Collect Mulching Rear Discharge Side Discharge | 6 (30mm - 65mm) | Folding Handles Grass Box Full Indicator Larger Rear Wheels Safety Key Self Propelled Variable Speed Vertical Storage | 88 | The Einhell GE-CM 36/47 S HW Li is an self-propelled cordless lawn mower weighing 31.3kg and is powered by two 4.0Ah Einhell 18v batteries (36v). It has a 47cm cutting blade, a huge 75 litre grass collection bag and is designed for medium lawns up to 700m². One of the biggest gripes for a lot of people is that when it comes from switching to cordless after years of using a petrol mower, things just aren’t as powerful or effective. Until now, that is. If you’re looking for a cordless mower that boasts the power and features of a petrol model, then I think you’re going to be hugely impressed with the Einhell GE-CM 36/47. With a simple push button start, 4-in-1 mowing options, variable speed rear wheel drive and a whole host of other things to get excited about, this is a mower that is incredible value for money. But what is most amazing about this tool is how easy it is to operate. Yes, it’ll give your lawn an excellent cut but with very little effort on your part. If you want something that’s going to do all the hard work, you’ll find it in this mower. Main Features
ConclusionThe Einhell GE-CM 36/47 S HW Li has to be one of the best lawn mowers I have looked at in a while in terms of having everything you need. Petrol mowers are powerful, but they’re no good for the environment and they require one heck of a lot of maintenance. By comparison, this cordless mower has many of the same features without the downsides. What’s not to love?

WORX WG749E Review - Self Propelled Brushless Cordless 46cm Lawn Mower | 46 | Cut and Collect Mulching | 7 (20mm - 80mm) | Folding Handles Larger Rear Wheels Safety Key Self Propelled Variable Speed Vertical Storage | 84 | The WORX WG749E is a self-propelled cordless lawn mower that is supplied with 2 x 4.0Ah batteries and charger that produces enough run-time to cut lawns up to 500m² . It has a 55 litre grass collection box, 46cm cutting width and has an excellent range of 7 cutting heights from 20mm to 80mm. Having tested and reviewed WORX lawn mowers over the years, I was over the moon, to say the least, to hear that they were launching their first cordless self-propelled model for 2021. What’s more, this WORX WG749E cordless mower is not only self-propelled, but also offers variable speed. If you’ve never used a WORX tool before, then let me be the first to tell you that the quality and performance come highly recommended; not just by me but by millions of people around the world. I personally use the smaller WORX WG779E.2 and would not have recommended any WORX mower for larger lawns, but with this WORX WG749E that could be about to change. With the WG749E, you are getting an enormous amount of power in a surprisingly lightweight body and a very decent 46cm cutting width. Self-propelled cordless models are typically a little weightier, but this one handles beautifully. Moreover, it delivers an immaculate cut right up to the edge of the lawn. For fans of the WORX range, you’ll be pleased to know that you’ll receive two 4.0Ah 18v batteries with this model that can be power shared, and a very convenient charging system. There is the option to mulch or cut and collect as well as 7, yes 7, cutting heights making this a rather diverse machine. Main Features
ConclusionI was a little more than excited to review this latest WG749E mower from WORX and I wasn’t disappointed. Being the brand’s very first self-propelled, variable speed cordless mower, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but they have surpassed themselves in terms of power, performance and convenience. While there are not multiple collection modes, there is more than enough features for the average larger lawn and with an incredibly easy to use design, this is what the mower of the future ought to look like. Just like the smaller WORX mower models, I can see this WORX WG749E cordless mower becoming a best seller and constantly selling out. So, if you can get your hands on one, I would do so ASAP. They can be pre ordered now or purchased after the release date in late June 2021. | Pros

It has a 51cm cutting blade, a 60 litre grass collection bag and is designed for medium lawns up to 600m². There are 6 cutting heights available that range from 22mm to 80mm and the mower comes with a two year manufacturer's warranty that includes the batteries. The ways in which you can mow with this self-propelled tool are endless. There are six easy to adjust cutting heights and a choice of four mowing modes. If it is versatility you are after, you won’t find much else quite as adept as the Empress 46 LI. This lawn mower is ideally suited to larger gardens thanks to its generous 51cm cutting width. It will make light work of lawns up to 600m² but it certainly won’t be tiring work thanks to a compact and lightweight design that is fantastically easy to manoeuvre. If you would like to get to know this tool a little better, my Mountfield Empress 51 LI review will tell you all you need to know. Main Features
ConclusionI have been impressed by a lot of the Mountfield mowers in the past but this Mountfield Empress 51 LI really caught my attention and with so much to offer, it is little wonder. This is a robust, powerful and reliable piece of equipment that doesn’t scrimp on features. While it is missing a rear roller, has no foam on the handles and is a little tricky to fold the handles at the lower point, these are minor inconveniences when you think about everything else you are getting. Once you have chosen your batteries and given them a charge, you’ll benefit from a nice running time and excellent operation and performance. For medium to large gardens, this is by far one of the best mowing tools on the market at the moment. | Pros

This is a self-propelled lawn mower that immediately caught my eye thanks to its diversity, practicalities and longer run times. Many modern cordless mowers aren’t able to offer anywhere near as many features as this one for such a reasonable price. Yard Force LM G46D Review - 46cm | 46 | Cut and Collect Mulching Side Discharge | 7 (25mm - 75mm) | Folding Handles Grass Box Full Indicator Larger Rear Wheels Safety Key Self Propelled Vertical Storage | 85 | The Yard Force LM G46D Cordless Self-propelled Lawn Mower features a fast charging 40 volt 5.0Ah battery that provides around 40 minutes of run-time and is suitable for lawns up to 800m². The 7 height adjustments on the Yard Force can be set between 25mm and 75mm and comes supplied with a 55 litre grass box. The Yard Force LM G46D Cordless Rotary Lawn Mower is lightweight at just 33.5kg and has a 46cm cutting width. The Yard Force LM G46D is a lawn mower that offers everything you need to maintain a luscious lawn in a compact and (relatively) lightweight package. New for 2021, this mower is the largest in an upgraded range from the brand, which also includes smaller models with a 34cm (Yard Force LM G34A ) and 37cm (Yard Force LM G37A) deck, respectively. However, for larger lawns, this mighty machine has a lot to offer including a self-propelled drive for ease of movement and a huge cutting width of 46cm, which is ideal for lawns up to 800m². What’s more, it comes with a power system to be reckoned with including a brushless motor and a hefty 40v 5.0Ah battery. If you are someone who likes a little diversity when it comes to cutting the grass, then this model will likely get your attention. The Yard Force LM G46D boasts a seriously impressive cut and collect system as well as the option for side discharge and mulching (3-in-1 cutting functions). If that wasn’t enough, then it also features seven cutting heights and a steel deck to add to its versatility. There’s really nothing that has been left out with this machine and for a cordless, it could be one of the mowers that seriously rivals more robust petrol models. Main Features
ConclusionThe Yard Force LM G46D is a rather impressive little lawn mower. And I use the term little lightly since, while this is a compact and easy to store machine, it certainly thinks big in terms of power. With a 5.0Ah battery, you get a better running time and even when the power runs out, you won’t have to wait an age for it to recharge. Couple this with the battery’s ability to power share and you’ve got something rather innovative. The quiet operation of the brushless motor, the efficiency of the self-propelled drive and the choice of 3-in-1 cutting features make this a pleasure to use. In fact, I found it incredibly difficult to pick out anything that I didn’t like about this lawn mower. | Pros
