The Murray EQ2-700X is a powerful self propelled petrol lawn mower that is fitted with a powerful Briggs & Stratton 750EX 161cc engine. It has a large sized blade and deck size at 56cm and is designed for larger gardens. A huge 75 litre grass collection box is supplied and the height of the EQ2-500X can be adjusted to 6 positions from 25mm to 75mm via a central lever. When I saw that Murray had launched an upgraded version of the EQ700X, I couldn’t help but take a look. I’d been highly impressed with the first generation of the petrol lawn mower and had high hopes for the second generation.
I also noticed that the brand has launched several other second gen mowers including the EQ2-500X which is essentially a small version of the Murray EQ2-700X only it has a smaller cutting width of 52 cm.
With 4 in 1 mowing options, a great range of cutting heights, a mighty Briggs and Stratton engine and a robust steel deck, it appears that there’s nothing this mower can’t do. No petrol lawn mower would be complete without a reliable and powerful engine and that’s exactly what you get when you purchase the Murray EQ2-700X. It comes fitted with a Briggs and Stratton E Series 161 cc engine that runs at up to 2900 rpm. It really is ready to face any challenge.
Being a four stroke engine, you will need to make sure that you have the correct stroke engine oil. However, this does not come with the machine and must be purchased separately before use.
The Murray EQ2-700X comes with the Readystart feature which is designed to make the recoil start easier to use. In some cases, customers have talked about how it can be difficult from a cold start and you may need to pull several times before the mower gets up and running.
Performance
The Murray EQ2-700X is not a machine to be messed with; this is a mower that delivers impeccable performance even in tough conditions. What really caught my attention was how it powered through even the thickest grass with no issues whatsoever.
What’s more, the robust design and strong blades mean that you can cut grass on slopes, over bumpy terrain and where things are a little out of control. However, I should point out that the lawn mower is pretty heavy at 34 kg so this could prove to be a little strenuous when you’re working on more demanding ground.
Blade and Deck
The Murray EQ2-700X boasts an incredibly well made steel deck that makes this feel like a much more premium machine than the price suggests. No, it’s not the cheapest mower on the market but it feels indestructible. If you have a more challenging lawn or lots of obstacles then the Murray EQ2-700X will power through.
What’s more, it’s fitted with a durable steel blade that glides effortlessly through even dense or long grass. Having read several reviews, it would seem that this could almost be a commercial mower with how it makes light work of even the most challenging conditions.
Cutting Diameter
If you’re looking for a lawn mower for a medium to large lawn then the Murray EQ2-700X is ideal. It boasts a 56 cm cutting width which will allow you to get the job done in a much faster time.
However, this may be too large for some gardens and that’s fine because Murray offers a range of smaller petrol lawn mowers with many of the same features including the EQ2-500X and the EQ2-300 with a much smaller 42 cm cutting width. There’s really something to suit everyone.
Handles
The Murray EQ2-700X benefits from an ergonomic handle that can be adjusted to suit your height, making mowing more comfortable. All of the controls are within easy reach and this makes using the Murray EQ2-700X that much easier.
What’s more, the handle folds at two points so when the mower is not in use, it’s a lot easier to store and won’t take up as much space in the shed or garage.
Height Adjustment
As you would expect for a larger and more versatile lawn mower, the Murray EQ2-700X comes with a good amount of cutting height options. There are six in total ranging between 25 mm and 75 mm which is versatile enough to meet the changing mowing needs in the UK between the first and last cut of the season.
I also really liked how easy it was to switch between the cutting heights. There’s a simple level located near the back wheel which slides and slots to adjust the height. It’s foolproof!
Mowing Features
One of the things that I really liked about the Murray EQ2-700X was that it’s a 4 in 1 machine. This means that it’s incredibly versatile and allows you to mow your lawn in different ways depending on the conditions.
For example, the Murray EQ2-700X comes with a mulching plug which is great for boosting the health of your lawn. Simply remove the grass catcher and insert the mulching plug and the clippings will be recycled back to the lawn to deliver those all important nutrients.
There is also a side and rear discharge chute if you prefer this method of mowing and of course, the traditional cut and collect option. Since this is a large lawn mower, I was pleased to see that it comes with a 75 litre grass catcher. This is a hybrid design with a cloth bag that’s easy to store and a hard lid for stability. What’s more, it comes with a dust shield and a full indicator so you never need to guess when it’s time to empty.
Practicalities
Cleaning your lawn mower can be a real pain in the backside but with the Murray EQ2-700X it’s not an issue since this mower comes with a wash port. Simply connect your hose and wash away any debris or grass, keeping your mower clean and ready for the next use.
When your Murray EQ2-700X arrives, you will be required to perform some assembly but this is minimal. You may need some basic hand tools to attach the handle and then it’s simply a case of putting the grass box on and adding your oil and fuel before you’re ready to go.
While not really a practicality of the mower, I thought it was worth mentioning that Murray offers a donation to UNICEF for every Murray EQ2-700X they sell. If you like the idea of doing your bit then this is a nice incentive to purchase this machine .

Should You Buy This Model?
After checking out the Murray EQ2-700X, I can see that this is a petrol mower for people who are serious about lawn care. The reason I say this is that it’s such a versatile machine that will easily meet the complex needs of someone who likes to take extra good care of their lawn.
However, if you’re looking to buy your first petrol mower and want something with all (or most) of the bells and whistles then I think the Murray EQ2-700X would also be a good choice. It’s easy enough to use without compromising on features so, while it is versatile, it’s not complicated.
I’d also recommend this lawn mower for anyone with a larger garden since the wide cutting diameter means you won’t have to spend as long tending to your garden.

Conclusion
I’ve really enjoyed looking at the features of the Murray EQ2-700X; it’s certainly an upgrade on the first generation of this model. For example, the grass box on this one holds an extra five litres than the EQ700X and the cutting width is 3 cm wider. However, I did notice that the cutting heights on this one weren’t quite as varied as its predecessor that has 6 options between 28 mm and 92 mm. Is that a deal breaker; I wouldn’t say so.
Overall, I’ve been very happy with the quality of the Murray EQ2-700X and how well made it is. It feels really strong and robust and I’m not worried about using it on challenging terrain. Couple that with the powerful Briggs and Stratton engine and you’ve got a mower that’ll take you through season after season.
