Summary
The Sprint 460SP is a self-propelled petrol mower fitted with a 140cc Briggs and Stratton engine and has 4-in-1 cutting options. These options include cut and collect, mulching, side discharge and rear discharge. This mower has a 46cm cutting width, steel deck, 6 cutting heights from 28mm to 92mm and a 60 litre soft mesh grass collection bag.
The Sprint 460SP is a tremendous self-propelled petrol lawn mower that is ideal for medium-sized lawns thanks to its generous 46cm cutting width. But alongside this, you are getting several features, including a Briggs and Stratton engine, that make this mower worth considering for anyone who simply wants to get out there, cut the lawn and get on with their day.
If you were looking for something a little more sophisticated, you might consider its bigger brother, the Sprint 460SPX which has a few additional features such as ReadyStart, an upgraded 575EX Series engine, even larger rear wheels and a wash port. But if you are after something that just gets the job done, you will want to know if this Sprint 460SP performs as well as it looks on paper.
In this review we will take a closer look at this Sprint 460SP and compare it to both the 460SPX and the 460P alternatives. This review will help you, first of all to decide if this mower is right for you and your lawn, and secondly what model variation of this mower to choose.

Engine
The 460SP is powered by a robust and reliable engine from Briggs and Stratton. This trusted company has been making motors since way before any of us were born, so you can feel confident that they know what they are doing. This Sprint 460SP features a 500E series engine which will offer you unrivalled power but in a compact design. This is great if you don’t want bulky equipment, however, if you wanted to go even more powerful, you could go up a model to the 460SPX and get a 575EX engine which will drive the mower even further.
This is a 4-stroke engine which tends to be far quieter so is excellent if you live in a built-up area and they are also far more durable, meaning that it will keep running well into the future.
You also have the reassurance that Briggs and Stratton have authorised Sprint as a dealer, so you are automatically welcomed to the support network that will ensure your engine runs for as many years as you need it to.
To help you understand the different Briggs and Stratton engines that are supplied with the 3 different Sprint 460 options, I have listed them below.
Model | Engine | Displacement (cc) | Fuel Tank Capacity (l) | Gross Torque (Nm) | ReadyStart® | Model Number |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Sprint 460P | Briggs & Stratton 450E Series | 125 | 0.8 | 6,10 | NO | 08P5 |
Sprint 460SP | Briggs & Stratton 500E Series | 140 | 0.8 | 6,78 | NO | 09P6 |
Sprint 460SPX | Briggs & Stratton 575EX Series | 140 | 0,8 | 7,46 | YES | 09P7 |
Performance
It is common knowledge that a petrol-powered mower is always going to give you far more power than anything else, and this is easily demonstrated in the performance of this choppy little machine.
The decent capacity fuel tank keeps it running for a good length of time, so even if your medium-sized garden is erring on the edge of being large, you’ll still get a huge chunk of the work done.
The strong steel blades ensure a clean and more precise cut on each pass so you won’t need to keep going over the same part. In short, it will allow you to get the work done and move on to the next part of your day – nothing has been compromised. Starting is easy via the recoil pull cord and the addition of the ReadyStart on the SPX model makes starting even more of a breeze.
One thing to bare in mind is the lack of an electronic start option with this range of Sprint petrol mowers. This is not such a big issue as the Briggs and Stratton engines are renowned for their easy starting and many do not want the added hassle of charging the starter battery.
Self-propelled Drive
One of the most impressive things about this petrol lawn mower is that it features a self-propelled drive, so all you need to do is guide it around your outdoor space.
It travels at a single speed of 3.6km which is an ideal walking speed – with some petrol mowers, you do have the option to adjust this, but this isn’t a deal-breaker by any stretch of the imagination.
Certainly, when you compare this model to its smaller brother, the Sprint 460P which does not feature a self-propelled drive, you can see why it is a clear choice. So, any Spirit model that has SP in its model number means it DOES have a self-propelled drive.

Blade And Deck
The Sprint 460SP comes with a sturdy and robust steel deck and blade. You can feel confident that not only will this stand the test of time, but it will be no match for the elements thanks to the nature of this metal.
It has a high lift blade which allows for better airflow under the deck – great for mulching and mowing when the grass is slightly damp.
Replacement blades are readily available or can be sharpened by anyone with basic DIY skills and a few tools.
Cutting Diameter
Any type of medium lawn would benefit from this generous 46cm cutting width. It would be suitable for larger gardens too, but you might wish to consider a larger model for this reason.
As the name suggests all three 460 models have the same 46cm deck size.
Handles
One of the most notable things about the handles of this mower is that it can be easily adjusted. This is essential since some mowers don’t have this option and this can make cutting the lawn an unpleasant and uncomfortable experience, depending on your height.
Furthermore, the handle easily folds down so that storing the mower is straightforward.
One minor downside on both the 460P and the 460SP, is that there is no foam on the handle bars. This is not only for comfort, but also to absorb some of the vibration from the engine. Its a shame Sprint did not include this useful feature as it would not cost a great deal to do so. You will need to purchase the 460SPX if a foam grip is a must.
Height Adjustment
It can be difficult on some mowers to adjust the cutting height, but with the simple two-lever system on this model, it has never been easier.
You have a choice of six cutting heights so nobody can say that this isn’t a versatile petrol mower. These range between 28mm and 92mm, once again demonstrating its diverse nature.
Again, the height options are consistent across the Sprint 460 range.
Mowing Features
If there is anything that really impresses me about this lawn mower, it is the incredible versatility, which we discussed above. This is genuinely a mower that keeps on giving, and the range of mowing features and 4 in 1 nature means it can be used in so many ways.
You have the choice of side and rear discharge as well as mulching mode and collection in the grass bag. There is a slight variation on the number of mowing features across the 460 range, but basically the Sprint 460P does not have the mulching and side discharge option. I have created a table below to make this clear.
Model | Collecting | Rear Discharge | Side Discharge | Mulching |
---|---|---|---|---|
Sprint 460P | YES | YES | NO | NO |
Sprint 460SP | YES | YES | YES | YES |
Sprint 460SPX | YES | YES | YES | YES |
Mulching
If you aren’t too fussed about whether a mower has a mulching option, then you might go for the smaller model in this range, the 460P which does not have an opportunity to mulch. But if this is something that matters to you and the health of your lawn, then you will be pleased to note that a mulching plug is included, so that you can give your lawn that all-important nitrogen boost!
To lean more about the benefits of mulching the lawn please see my article The Benefits of Mulching Lawn Mowers – Complete Guide.
Grass Box
The Sprint 460SP comes with a very large capacity grass bag that can hold up to 60 litres making it ideal for medium lawns. The last thing you want is to have to keep stopping to empty the contents, you don’t need to worry too much about this with this model.
The soft mesh collection bag ensures good air circulation and thus effective grass collection and mulching. The down side to this type of all cloth bag is that it’s more prone to damage. This is particularly so if you need to cut along side thorny bushes or hedgerow.
Practicalities
This is an incredibly practical petrol mower when you think about the foldable handle and easy to use functions. As I have mentioned, it is ideal for anyone who doesn’t want an overly complex mower.
It has the self-propelled drive (not the smaller brother – 460P) which makes it perfect for anyone who can’t or doesn’t want to push a manually driven mower around the garden.
However, if you wanted a few additional features, you might think about the next model up, the 460SPX which has ReadyStart. This is a feature that takes the stress out of starting a recoil start mower, such as this one. It also has a handy wash port which can be connected to your hose for easy cleaning.
This model does have a good-sized 0.8 litre fuel tank so you will get plenty of run time on one fill.
The higher the model the larger the rear wheels. Larger rear wheel make the mower more stable, easier to manoeuvre and ensures it can work effectively over uneven and bumpy lawns. Below I have shown the different rear wheel sizes across the Sprint 460 range.
- Sprint 460P – Front: 18cm / Rear: 18cm
- Sprint 460SP – Front: 18cm / Rear: 20cm
- Sprint 460SPX – Front: 18cm / Rear: 28cm

Sprint 460SP Pros and Cons
Should You Buy This Model?
This is an excellent choice for anyone with a medium lawn that does not want the hassle of running a complex mower overrun with features. But that isn’t to say that this petrol mower doesn’t have a good number of features. It certainly does and is ideally suited to anyone who wants the added advantage of having a self-propelled drive and multiple cutting options as detailed above.
You would also benefit from this model if you are used to starting/priming a petrol mower with ease, because unlike the next model up, it does not have ReadyStart.
How does this petrol mower compete with other brands? Well, very well indeed. Remember this Sprint has a quality Briggs and Stratton engine and the build quality compares well to the competition. Sprint include both the mulching plug and the side discharge chute as standard in the box, with other brands this can be an optional extra.
Conclusion
The Sprint 460SP is a great lawn mower and indeed a good choice for people who want a reliable self-propelled model at an affordable price. It comes with several impressive features, including a 4 in 1 design that allows you to mow in a variety of ways, easy to adjust dual point height adjustment and larger rear wheels. One thing is for sure: this Sprint 460SP will not disappoint and will make a wise purchase.
Also, it has a good-sized grass collection bag, a good mid-sized cutting width that is perfect for your medium lawns. In addition the ease of use is this mower’s strongest point.
Overall, I’d say that this petrol mower is seriously worth your consideration and investment, just be aware of the few minor downsides listed above to ensure they are not an issue for you.
