Murray lawn mowers always have something special about them and the Murray EQ2-300 is no exception. This is the updated version of the EQ300 and has an upgraded body and some features that are worth getting excited about.
What I love about the Murray EQ2-300 is that it’s a great choice for people who want something diverse yet not overly complicated. The bigger brother, the Murray EQ2-500X, is a self propelled 4 in 1 petrol lawn mower that’s wonderful for its purpose but for some, it might be overkill and that’s where the Murray EQ2-300 excels.
In my Murray EQ2-300 review, I’ll be going over all of the key features and presenting you with all the information you’ll need to decide whether this is the right lawn mower for you.

Engine
If there’s anything that’ll tell you all you need to know about the quality of the 300E E Series engine in the Murray EQ2-300, it’s that it’s made by Briggs and Stratton. This well-known, reputable manufacturer produces powerful engines that are designed to stand the test of time and not let you down.
Running at a maximum torque of 6.1Nm, the 125cc engine delivers immense power that’ll help the Murray EQ2-300 tackle a wide range of cutting conditions.
Performance
When I’m testing a lawn mower, one of the first things that helps me decide whether it’s a worthwhile investment is how it performs. After all, you want a mower that’s going to leave you with a neat and tidy lawn and the Murray EQ2-300 won’t let you down.
I love how well the Murray EQ2-300 performs on rugged terrain. If your garden is a little rough and uneven then the powerful engine will ensure a uniform cut over these areas. However, I would say that this one isn’t quite as suited to slopes as the larger Murray EQ2-500X which boasts a self propelled drive, making it easier to work on inclines.
If you are after a self propelled mower but don’t want something quite as big then there’s also the Murray EQ400 with a 46cm cutting deck. In many ways, this mower is very similar to the Murray EQ2-300.
Blade and Deck
One of the things that Murray improved in the EQ2-300 compared to its predecessor is the design of the body. It’s made from high quality steel to ensure that the deck will not be damaged even when you’re mowing in more trying conditions.
What’s more, the deck comes in a choice of colours which isn’t something you see a lot of with lawn mowers but I think it’s a nice touch.
The Murray EQ2-300 features a 42cm cutting width which makes it ideal for small to medium sized lawns. Again, if you need something larger, the EQ2-500X has a 51cm deck which makes it better for slightly larger gardens.
Handles
Comfort is just as important as performance, especially when you’re using a push mower as you can start to feel it after a while. But the Murray EQ2-300 has an ergonomically designed handle with a soft grip to make it easier on your hands.
Moreover, the handle folds at two points so the Murray EQ2-300 becomes a lot smaller when it’s time to store it. If you don’t have a lot of storage space, this simple feature can make a world of difference.
Height Adjustment
The Murray EQ2-300 is pretty versatile when it comes to height adjustment. You have a choice of six cutting heights with the highest being 75mm and the lowest being 25mm. I have seen mowers with slightly shorter 20mm low heights for people that want a very close cut. However, 25mm is standard and usually more than sufficient for the domestic gardener.
You can change the cutting heights through the use of a central lever. This process is simple and can be done in seconds; no need for tools or complicated processes. Just switch the position according to the current mowing conditions and you’re on your way.
Mowing/Cutting Features
I recently reviewed the larger Murray EQ2-500X which is a 4 in 1 lawn mower. If you want plenty of features then I’d recommend that one. However, for most people, cut and collect is more than enough and the Murray EQ2-300 also benefits from a rear discharge chute so it’s somewhat versatile.
The lack of a mulching plug may be cause for concern if you do like to mulch your clippings so it’s worth considering before you buy.
The grass collection bag on the Murray EQ2-300 is a soft bag so it’s great for easy storage. Plus, this material ensures better airflow so you’ll get more clippings in the bag at any one time. In total, it’ll hold up to 45 litres.
Practicalities
Petrol lawn mowers can be very heavy so I really like that the Murray EQ2-300 weighs just 23kg. That might sound a lot but believe me, there are many that are much heavier. Provided you’re in good health, pushing it around isn’t going to be an almighty task. However, if you do have some physical limitations then the EQ2-500X might be better with its self propelled drive.
The Murray EQ2-300 also comes with a handy wash port where you can connect your garden hose to make cleaning so much easier.
While I’m confident that not a lot will go wrong with this well-made and robust little lawn mower, it does give you peace of mind that it comes with a two year warranty.

Should You Buy this Model?
Another good model that will make short work of a large garden. And thanks to a large collection bag, it is possible to mow a whole garden in one go. The mulching capability would be a good add-on to get.
Murray has not installed a device that not everyone wants and would bump the price up. If you have a garden up to 1000m2 and have no interest in mulching, then this is the mower for you.

Conclusion
The small issue some older operators may have is the fact that it is not self-propelled. Pushing a mower is not a big deal for a small garden, but it is hard work for a 1000m2 garden. And when it comes to the added weight of fuel and wet grass, it may get to the point where pushing it for too long may become tiresome for less able users.
The engine has a good reputation, as does the manufacturer, and in some ways having less strain on the engine may prolong its lifespan. Briggs and Stratton are a big and reputable US company that makes their engine in-house, but of course nothing lasts forever.
Self-propelled mechanisms are potential weak points; complications of using a drive system. This model puts all its efforts into cutting the grass, and it will keep on cutting as fast as you can push it.
