Mountfield has been a leading UK lawnmower maker for more than 5 decades so their products have stood the test of time and are a popular choice. They have established a reputation for well-made products that are durable and reliable. They are also very good value for money.
The Mountfield HP41 has an RS100 OHV 4-stroke engine that is easy to start and delivers decent power. The engine delivers 1.55kW at 2800rpm. It is not self-propelled but light and nifty enough to manoeuvre easily.
The polypropylene deck on the Mountfield HP41 is light but durable and this lawnmower is highly economical to use. Aftersales service is great. The cutting width is 39cm so it is ideal for small to medium gardens. There are 5 height settings from 25mm to 70mm. The grass collection box is 40 L.
The design is comfortable and ergonomic on the Mountfield HP41 mower and is light enough to move easily around curves and flower beds.
If you are looking for the self propelled model of the this mower, then please see my full review of the MountField SP41 by clicking here.
Engine
Mountfield provide the HP41 in two different engine types, the ST120 OHV and the RS100 OHV shown below. Please note that in my video review I tested STIGA ST120 engine 123cc.
Mountfield ST120 Engine
Engine Brand | STIGA |
Engine Type | ST120 OHV Autochoke |
Engine Capacity | 123cc |
Net Power Output | 1.55kW @ 2800rpm |
Starting Method | Recoil |
Mountfield RS100 Engine
Engine Brand | Mountfield |
Engine Type | RS100 OHV |
Engine Capacity | 100cc |
Net Power Output | 2.0kW @ 3600rpm |
Starting Method | Recoil |
Both the Mountfield engines are 4 stroke and run on regular 95 unleaded petrol and separate standard SAE30 engine oil, so no need to mix. The manufacturers recommend fuel stabilisers in any machine that spends a lot of time sitting in storage. A stabiliser will prevent corrosion and keep the internals of the engine clean.
The engine oil goes into a separate tank; SAE30 4-stroke for lawn mowers is ideal. The mower will work with other brands of SAE30 oils; engine oil is not supplied in the kit. The RS100 OHV is a 100cc recoil (or pull cord) start engine, which produces a respectable peak 2.1-horsepower. To put it into perspective, the very first motor car had 3-horsepower.
As mentioned above there is also ST120 Autochoke engine available, and you can compare the power output in the tables below.

I’m having a problem with mine too. Just purchased. Followed all instructions and just won’t turn over. Have tried starting on a level surface, positioned the blades higher and tilted it to no avail. Any helpful advice greatly appreciated.
Hi Mark can you tell me in your opinion whats the best mower either the mountfield HP41 or the Hyundai HYM 400p
They both look similar and have good reviews.
Thanks
Hi Paula
It really is so close to call as both mowers are so similar in terms of features, functions and performance.
You will not be disappointed with either mower. The Hyundai does have a single lever to adjust the height, where the Mountfield has 3, but you are not constantly adjusting the height anyway.
After sales support is equally as good and I found the build quality equally good on both mowers.
Sorry I can’t help more as both mowers will make a good purchase and both are great value.
Please let me know what you choose and how you get on.
Thanks
Mark
Thanks Mark Ill let you know and how I get on .
Hi Mark
I chose the Hyundai, I shall order.
Thanks
Paula
Thanks Paula for letting me know. It would be great if you can post some feedback on how you get on. It is for sure a great mower.
Kind regards
Mark
Good Morning, I have just purchased the HP 41 and found there is no primer button. And I have tried lots of times to start the machine and it is not working. I have checked the oil and petrol and both are ok?
Hi Alex
Yes, mine also had no primer button, but did start first time.
Make sure to tilt the mower back slightly so the blade is free from the grass and try again.
Please let me know how you get on.
Thanks

Could you please explain why there is no primer on an HP42 model. Many thanks.
Hi Gareth
It is a self priming engine and it doesn’t need one.
Thanks
Mark
