The STIGA Combi 55 SQ is a self-propelled petrol lawn mower designed for larger lawns up to 2,000m² thanks to its large 53cm cutting width and huge 70-litre grass collection box. It offers 4-in-1 cutting functions including cut & collect, mulching, side discharge and rear discharge. There is a choice of 5 cutting heights from 25mm and 80mm.

STIGA Combi 55 SQ Review

If you are looking for a petrol mower that exudes power and delivers impeccable performance, then the STIGA Combi is an excellent choice. It is packed with features that make it ideal for large gardens. However, if you have a smaller garden, the mower does have a younger brother, the Stiga Combi 50 SQ which has a 48cm deck.

The features are much the same and when you look at the efficiency of this range, it is not difficult to see why this mower has received such a large amount of praise.

With a huge 70-litre grass box, five cutting heights and a robust steel shell, you are getting durability, convenience and ease of use all rolled into one. On top of this, you are getting a self-propelled drive with dynamic speed control making this a delight to use.

This is also an incredibly diverse machine thanks to the 4-in-1 mowing features allowing you to cut the lawn in a way that suits you.

STIGA Combi 55 SQ Main Features

  • 4-in-1 cutting options
  • 53cm cutting width
  • Five cutting heights
  • Dynamic speed control
  • 70-litre grass box
  • Folding ergonomic handle
  • Larger rear wheels
  • Lightweight

Engine

A petrol mower is known for being the most powerful type of mower and when you purchase one, you expect to see this promise being delivered on.

If that is the case, then you certainly won’t be let down by the engine on this machine. This is a 166cc STIGA engine (ST 170 OHV Autochoke Powered by STIGA ), which is more than powerful enough for a mower of this size, and then some, turning at 2900rpm.

It features a recoil start and a 1-litre fuel tank which gives you enough capacity to get the lawn done without having to refill. The STIGA Combi 55 SQ is single speed (3.8 Km/h) rear wheeled drive.

Please note that the STIGA Combi 55 SQ can be purchased with a Briggs and Stratton 675 EXi Series engine – model number Stiga Combi 55 SQ B

Performance

STIGA Combi 55 SQ Performance

One of the most notable things about this mower is that it is suited for gardens up to 2,000m² and for areas of this size, you need something that is going to make light work of the grass. This is indeed the case with the STIGA Combi, it glides effortlessly along the lawn, cutting precisely so that you don’t need to make more than a single pass.

Thanks to the auto choke system, the engine is easy to start and restart, taking a lot of the stress out of using this type of mower.

Self-Propelled Drive

Many petrol lawn mowers have a self-propelled drive but not all of them are as adept as this one. It features dynamic speed control which means that the drive is engaged gradually to ensure you have much greater traction. This is particularly useful when you are navigating sloped terrain as it minimises wheel spin, most notably on damp grass. The single drive speed is approximately 3.8 Km/h that seems to be about right, without the mower seeming to be pulling you along.

This is a rear-wheel drive petrol mower and this feature allows for much more excellent stability. Couple this with the larger rear wheels and you have a mower that won’t falter, no matter what you put it through.

Blade And Deck

This mower is constructed with a 53cm mowing deck and a solid steel shell. If you are looking for something incredibly durable, look no further. This design means that the mower will stand the test of time and will need far fewer repairs compared to those that are constructed with other materials.

There is also a handy wash port located in the deck allowing you to hook your garden hose up to the machine for easier cleaning, keeping the deck hygienic and fresh after every mow.

Cutting Diameter

STIGA Combi 55 SQ Deck

The cutting width of this model is 53cm. This is suitable for bigger lawned areas and the manufacturer suggests that anything up to 2,000m² will be suitable for this mower.

As I mentioned earlier, there is a smaller version of this lawn mower with a 48cm deck and this might be more suitable for those with a small to medium lawn.

Handles

There are a few things that stand out about the handles on this model. Primarily, you will notice how the front handle is ergonomically designed and exceptionally comfortable to use. It features a soft grip which is critical when mowing larger areas, especially if you want to avoid damage or friction on the hands.

The handle folds down with a quick release action so it is super-easy to store. If you are limited on shed space, this is a vital feature and something you should always look at when choosing a lawn mower.

Height Adjustment

Having an adjustable height is one of the most important aspects of any mower; it enables you to cut the lawn differently at different times, according to the season and lawn requirements, and makes the machine more versatile.

The STIGA Combi has a choice of five cutting heights ranging between 25mm and 80mm. These can be easily changed with the central cutting height adjustment lever; no messing around, just switch it up or down and get on with the job.

STIGA Combi 55 SQ Mowing Features

STIGA Combi 55 SQ Mowing Features

For anyone who is looking for a versatile model that gives you the option to mow in a variety of ways, this is an incredible choice. The 4-in-1 design gives you the ability to cut the lawn and collect the grass clippings in a huge grass bag. Furthermore, you will get a mulching plug if you want to deliver the grass clippings back to the lawn, a side deflector and the option for rear discharge. It doesn’t get any more diverse than that.

Mulching

Mulching is a great way of recycling your grass clippings and putting them back onto the lawn to act as a natural fertiliser.

A lot of modern mowers have this feature but not all. In the case of the STIGA Combi, you will get a handy mulching plug which can be fitted once the grass bag has been removed, allowing you to mulch with ease.

If you would like to learn more about mulching you can read my article “The Benefits of Mulching Lawn Mowers – Complete Guide”. https://easylawnmowing.co.uk/the-benefits-of-mulching-grass/

Grass Box

A large garden needs a grass collection bag to match – you won’t be stopping every two minutes with this one since it boasts an enormous 70-litre grass bag. This is made from fabric with a plastic lid and is easy to take on and off. These hybrid boxes are my favourite design as they are easily collapsible for compact storage, strong but also allow good air circulation for efficient grass collection.

Furthermore, there is a handy grass bag indicator located on the top of the bag, which lets you know when it is full and needs emptying.

STIGA Combi 55 SQ Practicalities

STIGA Combi 55 SQ Practicalities

This is an exceptionally practical machine and has a lot of features to demonstrate this. The large cutting deck and grass collection bag make this the perfect choice for anyone with a bigger garden and the size will make what could be a challenging job, much more simple.

Another thing that I noted about this one is that it is extremely lightweight for a petrol mower at just 39kg. In addition, this is a self-propelled petrol mower meaning that in terms of manoeuvrability it is nimble and easy to navigate around beds and obstacles.

Often, these hefty petrol mowers can be pretty cumbersome and difficult to handle, not this one, it’s almost comparable to pushing an electric mower – almost!

In addition to this, the large rear wheels offer excellent stability. If you are mowing on uneven ground or tackling slopes this is even more important.

This mower also has low noise and vibrations, which can be a problem in some petrol models, making it more pleasurable to use.

Should You Buy This Model?

If you are looking for something that is robust yet lightweight, then this is potentially one of the best choices on the market. It runs smoothly and has an incredible amount of power that will make cutting the lawn a breeze. If your garden is on the large side, then this will make the job a lot less challenging thanks to the variety of features designed for bigger spaces.

For those who have not used a petrol mower before, this might be a good place to start since it has an auto choke system that takes a lot of the hassle out of starting a petrol mower; something that puts a lot of people off.

This is also a good choice for anyone who is short on storage space thanks to the folding handle.

Conclusion

STIGA Combi 55 SQ Conclusion

The STIGA Combi 55 SQ is a lightweight yet incredibly durable piece of equipment that has been designed with more significant lawn spaces in mind. It has a handsome cutting width and a range of cutting heights that are easy to adjust, making this a versatile machine. But that versatility doesn’t end there.

This mower also allows you to cut the grass in several ways such as collection in the large grass bag, side and rear discharge and it comes with a mulching plug.

It is powerful and performs incredibly well. It has a 166cc engine which is ideal for this type of equipment and a self-propelled drive that is second to none.

There isn’t a lot that you could say to put this mower down, it just does what you would expect it to do and it does it without a fuss.
