The Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E is a self-propelled petrol mower fitted with the 139cc 1-cylinder, 4-stroke engine and has a 46cm cutting deck. This Einhell mower has an electric start option, powder-coated steel deck, 6 cutting heights from 30mm to 80mm, a large 70 litre soft mesh grass collection bag and larger rear wheels (280mm).
Some of the older petrol lawn mowers were fraught with problems, such as a pull cord start that was anything but reliable, not to mention being incredibly expensive. The Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E petrol lawn mower is a relatively affordable piece of equipment that is packed with modern features to allow today’s homeowners to tackle their garden with very little hassle.
Made for larger lawns up to 1400m², the 46cm cutting width of the Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E will make light work of your lawn. And of course, without a pesky cable getting in the way, your freedom of movement is excellent. But, as always, there are some downsides to this mower that I will go into later in this review.
This isn’t a petrol mower that has a lot of frills, but it does have some pretty impressive functions that make cutting dense or tall grass a breeze; even right up to the edge. I’ve been looking at the features of this mower and am excited to share this Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E review with you.
- 46cm cutting width
- Single speed self-propelled drive
- Electric start
- Robust steel deck
- 6 x cutting heights
- 70 litre grass collection bag
- 139cc, 1900w 4 stroke engine
- Folding handle
- Larger rear wheels
One of the things that massively stands out about the Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E is that it is an incredibly powerful piece of equipment. It runs on its own Einhell 1900 watt 4 stroke 139cc engine, that is made to keep going even when the conditions become more demanding.
Not only is this 4 stroke engine much more environmentally friendly, but it boasts an excellent balance of power and reliability.
Moreover, the internal battery is completely maintenance free and while it can be charged at the mains, it will charge during the mow, meaning less work for you.
Speaking of less work, the Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E comes with an electric key start which takes the hassle out of starting a petrol mower. If you’ve struggled in the past with the recoil pull cord start, then this will make a welcome change and will allow you to get started without having had a workout first.

If your lawn is a little more demanding or has been neglected, then the Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E is a worthwhile consideration. Thanks to its superior power, it’ll cut through tall grass with ease and the power won’t ever be reduced.
What’s more, this lawn mower features grass combs meaning that it will cut much closer to the edge of the lawn. If you want to save yourself time after the mow, this feature will prevent you from having to do too much work with the trimmer.
This is the High Wheel version of this mower, so the rear wheels are large at 280mm (compared to 204mm on the front). As this mower is rear wheel drive with excellent grip, it performs very well in terms of manoeuvrability and performance on slopes and uneven terrain.
One thing to bear in mind is, this mower is not the lightest on the market. Weighing in at a hefty 37.8 kg you are sure to be utilising the self-propelled option, especially on any slopes in the lawn.
Like most petrol mowers, the Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E features a self-propelled drive making it far easier to manoeuvre around the garden. However, there have been a lot of user reports that the mower does pick up some serious speed leaving the operator to chase it around the garden. The mower does operate at a mid range walking pace, but does indeed get to this speed more quickly.
The rear wheel drive can be engaged and disengaged as you see fit, giving you more versatility on how you mow your lawn.
Features In Detail
Blade And Deck
Something that really sets the Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E apart from the rest, is that this is an amazingly heavy-duty bit of kit. Made from incredibly strong powder coated steel, the Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E is a robust machine that can take on some seriously heavy-duty domestic use.
What’s more the wide 46cm cutting deck offers capacity to cut much larger lawns, up to an area of 1400 square metres. However, if you have a larger garden, there is a bigger brother; the Einhell GC PM 56 S HW or the Einhell GH PM 56 S HW, both of which have 56cm cutting decks for even larger lawns. Both models also have slightly larger grass collection bags to compensate for this larger size.
One of the things I liked best about the handles on the Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E was that the controls are all within easy reach and the ergonomic design makes operating the mower an extremely pleasant experience, with the exception of the grip. The soft grip on the handles is a little disappointing, as it does not feel the most comfortable or best quality when compared to other mowers I have tested.
The angle of the handles can be adjusted to 3 varying degrees, this will ensure that you can position the handles, so you are mowing with the correct posture.
The handles are also fully foldable which means that you won’t need to find such a big storage space for the lawn mower as it can be made more compact, including the collection bag.
The Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E comes with a choice of six cutting heights that range between 30mm and 80mm. Now, I will admit that I was a little disappointed with this since I would have expected slightly more. Not so much in terms of how many cutting heights there are, but that the lowest is a little higher than you’d typically see.
That said, 30mm will work well for a lot of situations and the fact that changing the height is as simple as moving the central lever, does make up for this. What’s more, if you go for the Einhell GC PM 56 S HW, that I mentioned earlier, this comes with a minimum cutting height of 25mm, which is more standard.
Many petrol lawn mowers come with a versatile range of mowing options like mulching or side discharge. This isn’t the case with this Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E, since it only has the option for cut and collect. If you only want to cut your grass in the traditional way, then this isn’t an issue and what you do get is a large collection box which vastly limits how often you’ll need to stop and empty.
At 70 litres, this hybrid grass bag gives you plenty of room to store the grass clippings. The fabric sides improve air flow, so they’ll compact much better meaning even fewer stops.
The Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E does not have a rear roller, so therefore will NOT produce a striped lawn appearance. If you simply have to have a striped lawn, then take a look at my Best Petrol Lawn Mowers For A Striped Lawn.
Grass Collection Bag
As already mentioned, at 70 litres, there is plenty of room for lots of clippings and the handy full flap indicator will let you know when it is time to empty – not that that will be very often thanks to the decent size!
When it does come to emptying, its not the easiest collection bag to empty. This is common for all cloth collection bags. There just seems to be a lack of convenient handles to aid in, not only in its removal, but also shaking the cuttings out of the bag. Having said that, the circulation is very good and compacts the cuttings well thanks to the all mesh construction.

You will need to remember, that this is a good value petrol mower and as a result, the components and build quality, whilst very good, are not up to commercial use standards. I’m not saying the quality is poor, and for normal domestic use is perfectly adequate.
You are getting a very respectable 2 year warranty, that can be extended to 3 years at no additional cost, if registered with Einhell within 30 days of purchase.
In summary, this Einhell GC-PM 46/2 S HW-E petrol mower will make a great purchase and will perform perfectly well for medium lawns up to 1400m².
