Einhell GC-PM 40 S-P Review – Self Propelled Petrol Lawnmower

Einhell’s GC-PM 40 S-P Review

The Einhell GC-PM 40 S-P is a self-propelled (or optional push) lawn mower with a 40 centimetre blade and a large 50 litre collection box. The mower is propelled by a 1.6-horsepower 99cc OHV engine and weighs in at 22.5 Kg. The Einhell GC-PM 40 S-P is designed for lawns up to 1,000m2 (10,764ft2) and has an easy to use central height adjustment lever that has 5 levels from 25mm to 60mm.

Einhell has gone with Briggs and Stratton designed a four-stroke air-cooled engine, which has a single 99cc cylinder. This is a fixed speed motor that runs at a continuous 2900 rpm, that produces 1.6-horsepower (1.2 kw) of power to the rear wheel and the blade.

The Einhell GC-PM 40 S-P has a 1 litre fuel tank attached to the motor that takes regular unleaded petrol. A stabiliser additive is worth adding if you have any intention of hibernating the mower, to prevent corrosion and clogging. This is also an OHV engine that follows the latest EU emission standards.

Self-Propelled Drive

Einhell’s GC-PM 40 S-P Review

The front wheels on the Einhell GC-PM 40 S-P are freewheeling, 150 mm in diameter. The rear wheels are 210 mm and are driven by the motor with a high level of torque, to allow the user to drive the mower loaded with grass up steep inclines. The rear wheel is where all of the load is balanced and gets the most traction.

Height Adjustment

GC-PM 40 S-P uses a central height lever, making it a lot safer than having to adjust all the wheels, and there is less chance of setting the height unevenly. There are 5 pre-set heights that range from 25mm to 60mm. For lawn-owners, 60mm is high grass, and most gardeners want to see how close they can get the blade to the grass without digging into the dirt.

Cutting Diameter and Features on the Einhell GC-PM 40 S-P

The main deck is a strong plastic composite that houses a 40 centimetre dual-cutting blade, equating to 0.5m2 per rotation. The blade is curved on one side to produce a great uplift in the housing to improve suction and ejection of the grass cuttings. And even though this is a self-propelled and lightweight mower it is rated for large gardens of up to 1000m2.

Roller (Stripes)

There is no roller or striper on this Einhell GC-PM 40 S-P mower, but as with other mowers that do not have them installed, there is an alternative. Aftermarket suppliers make rollers that you can pull by hand, which are easy and quick to use on a small lawn. Or you may be able to find a roller that will attach to the rear wheel if a striped lawn is something you want.

Grass Box Capacity

The grass chute for the mower is at the rear of the machine and aims grass at the 50 litre bag that hangs on the back. The angle of the chute is set extra high, so that the grass hits the back of the bag, reducing the likelihood of clogging.

The mower is intended for large gardens up to 1,000m2, but that is not to say that it cannot cut smaller or even larger lawns. The grass box has a level indicator to make it more obvious when the box is full and needs unloading. The box is built with two handles to make it easier to lift on and off the mower.

Practicalities on the Einhell GC-PM 40 S-P

Even though there is a self-propelling mode, you may not need it. The plastic deck has reduced the weight to such an extent, that the 22 kilo mower is easy to push along level lawns.

This Einhell GC-PM 40 S-P mower has a large set of rear wheels to carry the weight of a fully-loaded grass box and the mower. And as a general rule, larger tires mean better stability and a better ride over uneven gardens.

  • Ergonomic Folding Handle
  • High Rear Wheels

Safety Features

Users need to activate the operator bar mounted on the handlebar as an added safety measure. The operator bar needs to stay activated so that the engine can start. If the presence lever is released, the blade brake will stop the spinning at once, and the engine will stop.

There is no mulching mode on the Einhell GC-PM 40 S-P mower. You could mulch the grass by leaving the collection bag off and going over the area again on a second pass. Or, you can find electric leaf vacuums that will suck up grass cutting, mulch them, and then spit them out of the back of the machine.

Should You Buy this Einhell GC-PM 40 S-P Model?

If you are looking for a safe mower that is not too expensive and does a nice job of trimming your lawn, then this is the model for you. It is a manageable size and weight to store, and quick to set up when you need it.

If you want to get a bit more exercise, you can disengage the self-propelled mode. If you need to push it up an incline, loaded with grass, turn on the engine assisted wheels. This is a good choice for the owners of large gardens that are less concerned with stripes and mulching.

Einhell’s GC-PM 40 S-P Review

The Einhell GC-PM 40 S-P is a model that does what it says it will do, it cuts the grass, and it does it in an efficient and effective manner. There are no extras, where extras were not asked for; they bump up the price. The motor has a reasonable level of power for such a lightweight machine, and it is easy to store.

It seems like, Einhell would not need to make much more effort to add mulching to the unit, but then not everyone like dead grass scattered over their lawn. And the first rule of a good design is if you do not need it, get rid of it.

Einhell has shown that they know their customer base who like their products. They make machines that complete the task expected of them, and you know that it is dependable, durable and safe.
