The Best Eco Friendly Mowers On The Market

There has never been a better time to start considering your impact on the environment. I’ll admit that it isn’t something that’s at the forefront of most people’s minds but when you stop to think, it’s easy to see the damage that’s already been done.

It would be easy to assume that making small changes such as how you care for your lawn wouldn’t have that big of an overall impact. But that’s where we’re going wrong. If each of us took small steps, we could drastically lower the negative effects on the planet.

If you’re keen to change your impact on the environment and want to start caring for your lawn in a more eco-friendly manner then you’re in the right place. I’m going to be giving you tips on how best to care for your lawn and what tools are the most environmentally friendly.

Why Reduce Your Carbon Footprint When Using A Mower

Unless you’ve been living under a rock in recent years, you’ll have heard news reports, read social media posts and seen YouTube or TikTok videos on how the planet is deteriorating. There are several things that are going wrong such as melting ice caps, loss of wildlife habitat and extinction of species, among other things. But did you know that all of these things can be traced back to human activity?

Truth be told, we could all stand to do a little better and understanding why it’s important to reduce your carbon footprint when caring for your lawn is a great place to start. Here are just some of the benefits you’ll notice.

  • In the UK, wildlife species are dwindling in numbers. This includes many garden critters such as hedgehogs, bats, and many bird species. With the use of chemical pesticides and lawn care approaches that aren’t eco-friendly, our precious wildlife is losing habitat.
  • Moreover, insects require favourable conditions to thrive and by promoting eco-friendly lawn care we are able to provide them with that all-important habitat. You might think this is neither here nor there but when you consider that insects like bees pollinate up to 75% of human food crops, it’s easy to see why it’s vital to protect them.
  • If you grow your own fruit and vegetables in your garden then using eco-friendly approaches can increase the quality of your harvest.
  • Without using chemical fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides, you’re making taking care of your garden safer for you.
  • When it comes to your lawn care tools such as mowers, scarifiers, trimmers and any other powered tools, using a petrol model sends harmful fumes into the atmosphere. By reducing your carbon footprint and using electric or manual tools, you’re decreasing the damage you do to the ozone layer and reducing climate change.

Types Of Eco Friendly Lawn Mowers

Types Of Eco Friendly Lawn Mowers

Back in the day, petrol mowers were a common sight in domestic gardens. They’re renowned for their power and performance but there are plenty of downsides. Not only do these tools emit harmful gases into the atmosphere but they’re also difficult to maintain and require a lot of ongoing attention.

Instead of using a petrol powered lawn mower, you might consider using an electric model. There are corded and battery powered electric lawn mowers and while the old versions may not have done everything you would expect, modern models are giving petrol mowers a serious run for their money. The main advantage? They emit no damaging fumes at all.

There is also the option of a robotic lawn mower and within the last year there have been some significant advances on this technology. With boundary wireless robotic lawn mowers, you not only have the peace of mind that they’re eco friendly but they can also be easily set up to mow different zones. I have an in depth guide on robot lawn mowers if you’d like to find out more.

One of the things that I hear a lot of people talking about when using a cordless or robot mower is that disposing of the batteries is harmful to the environment. However, these machines run on lithium ion batteries which are incredibly long lasting, up to five years, so disposal has a minute impact on the planet.

That said, if you’re keen to steer as far away from any type of power as possible then you might opt for a manual push mower. Now, the one thing you’ll need to keep in mind with these mowers is that they require physical exertion from the user. If you have an uneven, sloped or large lawn then this could be problematic if your strength of stamina isn’t good.

But manual lawn mowers are ideal for anyone looking for an eco-friendly approach to lawn care as they emit no fumes and there’s no need to use electricity or dispose of batteries. Not only this but these lawn mowers are as close to silent as you’re going to get so you’re reducing your noise pollution as well.

How To Choose An Eco Friendly Lawn Mower

How To Choose An Eco Friendly Lawn Mower

After you have decided whether to choose an electric or manual lawn mower, there are a few other things to keep in mind to get the most eco-friendly option.

If you’re going for an electric mower then you will need to consider the power. If your grass is long or thick or you have a large garden then you’re going to need to go for something with a higher voltage. Of course, the higher the voltage, the more energy you’re going to use and since we’re considering the environment, it’s important to choose something with the least power possible. In other words, there’s no need for overkill.

Another thing to consider in terms of power is whether you go for a self propelled or push mower. Both models are powered either by mains electricity or batteries but self propelled mowers will require more power and again, this can impact the environment by using more energy. Unless you are unable to push the mower or your lawn is large, uneven or hilly, a push mower will be the most eco-friendly option.

When choosing a battery powered lawn mower, I would recommend choosing one that comes with interchangeable batteries. This will allow you to get the most out of the mower during each session, especially if you have a sizable lawn as you won’t need to worry about running out of power halfway through the mow. What’s more, many brands, such as Ryobi, offer batteries that can be used in any of their tools. It’s also worth considering batteries with as long a run time as possible which means you’ll need to charge them less.

Battery Mowers: Are They Really That Eco Friendly?

Anything that uses energy stands a chance of not being good for the environment. When you consider a battery powered lawn mower, you have to also consider that the power you use to charge it doesn’t come from a renewable source. Unless you’re harvesting your own solar power, for example, you cannot guarantee that the power is as eco-friendly as possible.

However, when we consider our options in terms of lawn mower types, battery powered models have been scientifically proven to do less damage to the environment as their petrol powered counterparts.

According to one study, however, it was noted that, unsurprisingly, cordless lawn mowers are not 100% eco friendly. They run on lithium ion batteries and mining lithium is not an eco-friendly process in itself due to the amount of water required and the toxins released during the process.

Tips For Maintaining Your Lawn For Optimal Eco-Friendliness

Tips For Maintaining Your Lawn For Optimal Eco-Friendliness

Choosing an eco-friendly lawn mower is just one of the ways you can improve your lawn care routine and reduce your impact on the environment. There are several practices you can put into place to make sure that your lawn maintenance is as kind to the planet as it can be.

  • Your lawn produces waste that could be harmful to the environment and simply adjusting your mowing schedule could reduce the amount of waste your lawn produces. It’s important to mow regularly but you don’t need to do it too Mowing the lawn every fortnight and only cutting a third of the length can reduce the risk of pests, diseases and drought.
  • We all know that grass needs water to grow but it is possible to go over the top and this wastes water. For a more eco-friendly approach, it’s best to water your lawn first thing in the morning or early evening as this will reduce the risk of the water evaporating so your lawn will be as hydrated as possible without the need for additional water.
  • Encouraging healthy growth requires a little more than just mowing and a lot of people opt for chemical fertilisers. But these are not good for local wildlife and this has a knock on effect on the environment. However, by using natural options like mulch, you can still have a healthy lawn all the while being eco friendly. You might also opt for compost which you can  make yourself and this prevents chemical run off into local waterways. It’s a win win!

85The WORX WG779E.2 is a cordless lawn mower that charges its two batteries in 120 minutes and produces a 35 minute run time. It has a 30 litre grass collection box, a 34cm cutting width, a rear roller for a stripey lawn and has 6 cutting heights that range from 20mm to 70mm.

I’ve tested a lot of lawn mowers over the years and one I was really keen to try out was the WORX WG779E.2 which has been a UK best seller for a while now. However, I always believe it’s important to see for yourself what all the hype is about and I’ll tell you that, for a budget mower, it didn’t disappoint.

In my YouTube review of the WORX WG779E.2, you’ll see how quickly I was able to unbox and assemble this mower. Once I had it put together, which merely consisted of screwing the handle together (tool-free, might I add) and slotting in the batteries. Of course, they did need to be charged first.

I really wanted to put the WORX WG779E.2 to the test so I ran it over my lawn which is roughly around 350m² as well as testing it on some longer grass in the local park. Again you can see the results in my video review. I blasted through the work on a single charge without any problems.

WORX had a previous 40 v cordless mower and the WORX WG779E.2 is an upgrade on this and comes with some impressive features like two 20 v batteries and six cutting heights.

Main Features

  • Covers areas reaching 350 m² in size
  • 40V (2X20V), 2Ah Li-on battery lawnmower
  • Blade length: 34cm
  • Number of Cutting Height: 6 (20mm-70mm)
  • Grass box capacity: 30 L
  • Charge time: 120 minutes
  • Free run time: 35 minutes

This Mower Is Suitable For

  • People with gardens about 350-400m² in size.
  • Those who like a nice stripey lawn.
  • People who want a smaller deck size to accommodate smaller strips of lawn.
  • People who require a wide range of cutting heights (6 settings from 20mm to 70mm).
  • Storage is limited.
  • Do not want to spend over £250 on a mower.

Conclusion

With this mower you’re getting features normally found in high priced mowers. Taking the decision to split the batteries into 2 x 20v was a great idea, especially if you use other WORX cordless tools as they are interchangeable.

At this price range (less than £200) this really gives great value for money and you would be very hard pressed to find a cordless mower that performs this well, and has such a good build quality for this price.

Overall I think this is a fantastic mower and I encourage everyone with a garden under 350 m² or less to purchase one. In fact I think it’s the best mower at this level you can purchase right now!

Pros
  • 6 Cutting Heights (20mm to 70mm)
  • Very Good Build Quality
  • 30-Litre Grass Box
  • Rear Roller for a Striped Lawn Appearance
  • 2 Batteries - Interchangeable with Other WORX Tools
Cons
  • No Mulching Ability

However, I’ll also be posting separate reviews of the other mowers in the collection to help you decide which is the right model for you.

Known for its German engineering and power, Einhell is a brand that has a fantastic reputation within the garden tools industry. When I heard about the Power X-Change RASARRO range of cordless lawnmowers from the brand, I was incredibly excited to try them out.

There are three mowers in the range and in this Einhell Power X-Change RASARRO 36/34 cordless lawn mower review, I’ll be discussing the features of the smallest model. However, I’ll also be posting separate reviews of the other mowers in the collection to help you decide which is the right model for you.

The Einhell Power X-Change RASARRO 36/34 cordless lawn mower is suitable for lawns up to 300 square metres and comes with a handy array of features to make lawn care easy. What I really like is how powerful a cut you get considering the size of the machine and what uniform results the Einhell Power X-Change RASARRO 36/34 cordless lawn mower creates. Let’s take a closer look at what to expect from this mower.

Main Features

  • 34 cm cutting width (for lawns up to 300 square metres.)
  • 5 cutting height options
  • 30 litre hybrid grass collection box
  • Power X-Change batteries
  • 2 x 3.0Ah 18v batteries included
  • Foldable handle for storage
  • Comes with two chargers
  • Carry handle

Conclusion

I’ve always been a fan of Einhell lawn mowers and I knew that the Einhell Power X-Change RASARRO 36/34 cordless lawn mower was going to impress me. But I couldn’t be prepared for just how impressive it was going to be.

This is the smallest model in the range and is recommended for lawns up to 300 square metres. While the battery capacity would work on even bigger lawns, the 34 cm cutting width might make mowing anything over 300m² a bit of a task.

What I noticed about the Einhell Power X-Change RASARRO 36/34 cordless lawn mower was the lack of cons. Usually when I review a mower, I’ll find something that makes me question whether this is a worthwhile product. But with this one, there were few drawbacks and even then, they were so minor that they’re hardly worth a mention.

Overall, I’d say that this is a fantastic investment for anyone looking for a cordless mower. It’s not the cheapest model on the market nor is it the most expensive. But what you can guarantee is that it comes from a brand whose reputation you can trust.

Pros
  • Power share with up to 300 other tools
  • Good mid-range German brand
  • 2 chargers included
  • Petrol style starter bar
  • Powerful brushless motor
  • Easy to store
Cons
  • No option to buy as a bare tool
  • Grass box could be larger

84The Hayter Hawk 60V is a cordless lawn mower powered by a range of 60V batteries that will provide enough runtime to cut a lawn up to 300m² with a 4.0Ah battery (7.5Ah battery up to 600m2). It offers either a 36cm or 43cm cutting width with 7 cutting heights that range from 19mm to 70mm and has a rear roller for a striped lawn appearance. The AD model is self-propelled with a variable speed drive between 1.8mph and 2.5mph. This mower comes with a 3 year manufacturer's domestic warranty when serviced annually by an authorised Hayter dealer.

Before I get into the nitty gritty of the batteries for this battery powered lawn mower, I’d like to point out that you do need to purchase the batteries separately. Of course you can also buy the Hayter Hawk as a bare tool if you already have compatible batteries.

What’s great, however, is that you have a good number of options. There are four batteries to choose from; a 2.5Ah battery although this is only suitable for the 36 Push Hayter Hawk, 4.0Ah, 6.0Ah or 7.5Ah batteries which can be used across all of these tools. Moreover, each of these 60V batteries can be power shared with other tools in the Toro garden tool range.

You will need to choose your batteries in line with the size of your lawn. For example, the 4.0Ah battery will handle lawns up to 300 square metres, but Hayter states that it can be used on lawns up to 900m². However, I doubt that this is the case on a single charge even with its adaptable power boost function.

With this battery powered mower, you will need to purchase the battery charger separately, but again, you’ve got options. There is a standard charger which will fully boost the 7.5Ah battery in three hours and the 6.0Ah battery in 2.3 hours. This charger is also suitable for the 2.5Ah battery which it’ll recharge in as little as an hour!

Alternatively, you might opt for the fast charger. Naturally, this will cost a little more, but it comes with the advantage of being able to refill the 7.5Ah battery in just 66 minutes! The 6.0Ah battery will be ready to go again in just shy of an hour with the rapid charger.

Buying the batteries separately should be considered an investment and this can put some people off, but when you consider how efficient they are and that the 7.5Ah can handle up to 900 square metres, it’s an investment worth making.

Main Features

  • Choice of three mowers with cutting decks of 36cm or 43cm
  • Self-propelled or push options available
  • Seven cutting heights ranging from 19mm to 70mm
  • One button height adjustment
  • 40L or 50L grass collection box
  • Rear roller
  • Vertical storage
  • Choice of four batteries
  • Power share batteries across the range, can also be shared with Toro® 60V garden tools
  • Carry handle
  • 3 year warranty

Conclusion

Having spent some time looking at the Hayter Hawk, I can confidently say that this is an excellent piece of equipment. OK, your first thought might be how much? But once you realise what a great litter performer this is and how easy it makes maintaining your lawn, you’ll quickly understand why it’s worth the investment.

Pros
  • Self-propelled variable speed drive model available
  • Good range of 7 cutting heights from 19mm to 70mm
  • Low 19mm cutting height for a bowling green finish
  • Vertical storage space saving feature
  • Powerful 60 volt batteries that are power share across the range

  • Power boost technology - power when needed that extends battery runtime
  • A trusted brand with good after sales service

Cons

  • High initial upfront investment
  • Heavier, but not as much as the Hayter Harrier 60V

  • Those who want a self-propelled variable speed drive.
  • Those that like to power share batteries with other Hayter garden tools and Toro's Flex-Force Power System.
  • People who want generous 7 cutting heights that range from 25mm to 70mm.
  • Those that want a petrol alterative and do not want to store oil and fuel.
  • People that do NOT want to create a stripped lawn appearance.
  • Those who like the convenience of having no power cord or have limited or no access to a power source in the garden.
  • People who like to purchase a trusted premium brand with good after sales support.

Conclusion

Hayter lawn mowers are typically a little more expensive than other brands, but this price is reflected in both the quality and performance of these machines. The Hayter Osprey 46 60v cordless mower is a super convenient, powerful, and easy to use cordless mower that puts a lot of others to shame. I’ve been very impressed with it and despite some very minor flaws, it’s a lawn mower I have no qualms in recommending.

  • Powerful 60 volt batteries that power share across the range

85The Hayter Harrier 41 VS 60V is a cordless lawn mower, powered by a 60v 6.0Ah battery that will provide enough runtime to cut a lawn up to 300m² (7.5Ah battery up to 600m² max). It has a 41cm cutting width and 7 cutting heights that range from 13mm to 60mm, has a rear roller for a striped lawn appearance and a variable speed drive between 1.0 and 3.3mph.

I recently talked about the Hayter Harrier 48 VS cordless mower which is a gigantic cordless lawnmower made for large gardens. But then I got to thinking; does this premium brand offer anything smaller for people with not such large lawns. I’m pleased to say that the answer to that question is yes! The Hayter Harrier 41 VS is great for gardens up to 600m² and aside from having a 1.5kw motor as opposed to the 2.0kw motor on the 48, the deck size is the only difference.

If you’re looking for a cordless lawn mower that will be a viable petrol alternative then I’d strongly recommend giving this one a chance. OK, it’s something of an investment but you’re paying for superior quality and a cut that’ll blow your socks off!

The main feature of this lawn mower is the heavy rear roller that gives lasting stripes and a wonderfully formal look to the lawn. But there are plenty of other things to get excited about, so let’s take a deep dive with my Hayter Harrier 41 VS review.

Main Features

  • 41cm aluminium cutting deck
  • Power Boost technology
  • Rear roller
  • 60V battery
  • 1.5kw DC motor
  • Leaf collection
  • Large 70 litre grass collection bag
  • 7 cutting heights from 13mm to 60mm
  • Variable speed
  • Folding handles
  • Hose wash port
  • 5 year warranty
  • 3 year battery warranty

This Mower Is Suitable For

  • People with gardens up to 600m2 in size (with 7.5Ah battery). Recommended for 300m2 lawns
  • People who do like a striped lawn.
  • Those who want a self-propelled variable speed drive.
  • Those that like to power share batteries with other garden tools.
  • People who want generous 7 cutting heights that range from 13mm to 60mm.
  • People who like to cut their lawn exceptionally low for formal appearance.
  • Those who like the convenience of having no power cord or have limited or no access to a power source in the garden.
  • People who like to purchase a trusted premium brand with good after sales support.

Conclusion

More and more manufacturers are throwing out cordless mowers and I have to say that some are shockingly inferior. But that is not the case with the Hayter Harrier 41 VS; this is a premium lawn mower that has a range of useful features that make maintaining your garden something of a joy.

The mower has variable speeds, a low cutting height, cuts to the edge of the lawn, a very effective rear roller and so much more. I can’t think of any reason why anyone wouldn’t love using this tool!

Pros
  • Self-propelled variable speed drive
  • Good range of 7 cutting heights from 13mm to 60mm
  • Low 13mm cutting height for a bowling green finish
  • Powerful 60 volt batteries that are power share across the range
  • Split ribbed rear roller for striped lawn appearance and easy turning and manoeuvrability
  • Strong aluminium deck
  • Super easy height adjustment
  • Power boost technology - power when needed that extends battery runtime
  • A trusted brand with good after sales service
  • Excellent 5-year warranty (must be serviced by Hayter authorised dealer)

85The Kärcher LMO 18-33 is a battery cordless lawn mower that has a 33cm cutting deck and a 35 litre grass collection box. The run time is up to 24 minutes from each 5.0Ah battery depending on the condition of the lawn. It is lightweight at only 11.6 kg, has 4 height adjustments settings from 35mm to 65mm and comes supplied with a mulching plug and fast charger.

Cordless mowing is one of the greatest conveniences of modern times and I’m yet to come across a lawn mower that is quite as convenient as this one. Kärcher has given us a simplistic tool that has a range of features that make it perfect for the everyday needs of the modern homeowner.

With a cutting width of 33cm, this lawn mower is ideal for small to medium sized gardens that measure up to 250m²; there is a larger version which I will introduce to you later but for many people, this one is the perfect size. What’s more, with a 2 in 1 mowing function, your garden will reap the benefits of natural fertiliser created from mulching.

In my Kärcher LMO 18-33 review I will be looking over all of the features of this machine as well as diving into the pros and cons, to help you make a more informed choice on whether this is the best appliance for you.

Main Features

  • Comes with 5.0Ah 18v battery and fast charger
  • 33cm cutting width
  • 4 cutting heights from 35mm to 65mm
  • Mulching plug
  • 35 litre grass box
  • Safety key
  • Weighs just 11.6kg
  • Fill level indicator
  • Grass combs

This Mower Is Suitable For

  • People with gardens up to 250m² in size.
  • Those that do NOT require a striped lawn.
  • People that like the option to mulch the grass cuttings.
  • Likes a quicker charge option 80% (94 minutes).
  • Storage is limited as handles and grass box fold flat.
  • People that have other, or plan to get additional Kärcher 18v tools.

Conclusion

The Kärcher LMO 18-33 is an affordable lawn mower that comes with a range of basic features as well as some little added extras that are perfect for domestic lawn mowing. One of the most outstanding things about this machine is that it runs on some extremely powerful 18v 5.0Ah batteries which give it the ultimate boost and a great running time. Couple this with the fast charger and you’ve got a power system to be envious of.

Moreover, this lawn mower boasts a 2 in 1 mowing function that gives you much greater versatility when tending to your garden. It’s lightweight, easy to use and delivers excellent results thanks to the sharp blades and cut to edge feature. Overall, while there are a few setbacks, I’d say this was a mower worth investing in.

Pros
  • Lightweight and easy to use
  • Ideal for small to medium lawns up to 250m²
  • Adjustable handles for comfortable posture
  • Larger 35 L grass box capacity for mower size
  • Quicker charge option to 80% in 94 min
  • Power share batteries with other 18v Kärcher tools

It features a 34cm cutting blade, a 32 litre grass collection bag and is designed for lawns up to 300m²

Having heard so many good comments about this LawnMaster CLMF2434G cordless mower and how great the support offered by LawnMaster is, I decided to give this mower a try myself.

If you’ve got a small to medium sized garden then the last thing you want is a ginormous petrol lawn mower cluttering up the shed. For the most part, cordless is the best option here and I was very pleasantly surprised when I tried out the LawnMaster cordless lawn mower that is bursting with exciting features. When you consider the budget price of this mower compared with everything that is included, it isn’t difficult to see why this is such excellent value for money.

Main Features

  • 2-in-1 cutting options
  • Rear roller
  • Mulching plug
  • Up to 60 minute runtime (both batteries)

It comes with everything you need to stay on top of a well-maintained lawn without the hassle of oil changes, refuelling or extensive maintenance.

I was so impressed with this mower, in terms of both build quality, performance and value for money. So much so, that I believe this is the best value cordless mower of this size on the UK market right now. The WORX WG779E.2 has held this top spot for many months, until now!  You will not be disappointed with this LawnMaster 34cm cordless mower and I really do feel it should be top of your shortlist when considering a new cordless mower.

84The Bosch CityMower 18 is a cordless lawn mower with 3 cutting heights ranging from 30mm to 60mm, has a 32cm cutting width and a 31 litre solid two piece grass collection box. This mower is supplied with 1 x 4.0Ah 18v battery that charges in around 95 minutes and is designed for lawns up to 300m² in size.

A lot of the mowers that I look at have an array of fantastic features, but the Bosch CityMower 18 is the simplest lawn mower from the brand and is ideal for those with very basic mowing needs. If you’re after something that is going to mow the lawn and then go off and make you a cup of tea; this won’t be the machine for you. However, if you want a tool to cut the grass quickly and efficiently, look no further.

While the Bosch CityMower 18 may not be packed with features, it does perform excellently with cut to edge technology and a comfortable user experience, thanks to the ErgoFlex handles. Compared to the more diverse mowers in the Bosch range like the EasyRotak, UniversalRotak and AdvancedRotak, the CityMower might be seen as the laid-back cousin.

There are a few things that might set you back when mowing, such as the lower number of cutting heights and the inability to mulch, but overall for a no frills lawn mower, I was pretty happy with it. In this Bosch cordless lawn mower CityMower 18 review, I will delve a little deeper into the pros and cons of this easy to use tool.

Main Features

  • 32cm cutting deck
  • 3 cutting heights
  • ErgoFlex handle
  • Suitable for small to medium lawns up to 300m²
  • Supplied with 1 x 4.0Ah 18v battery (or available as bare tool)
  • Lightweight at 9.9kg
  • Battery charges in 95 minutes

This Mower Is Suitable For

  • People with lawns up to 300m² in size.
  • Those that want to power share batteries with other 18 volt power tools from Bosch.
  • People that want a premium brand mower that has a very good build quality.
  • Those looking for a lightweight mower that is easy to manoeuvre.
  • Those that DON'T require a mulching function.
  • Those that like a simple mower without a plethora of unnecessary features.
  • People who like an ergonomically designed mower for increased comfort whilst mowing.

Conclusion

Bosch has a great range of mowers and they cater for all needs. Their CityMower 18 is ideal for smaller gardens where the needs are limited. I believe this is a great choice for people who want something that they can take out of the shed and get to work.

The mower doesn’t have the most impressive range of features, but you shouldn’t let that put you off because what it does do, it does very well.

Pros
  • Lightweight and easy to manoeuvre
  • Ergonomic handles promotes better posture
  • Simple and well placed controls
  • Great for lawns up to 300m²
  • Grass edge combs for close to edge cutting
  • Power share battery with range of 18v Bosch tools
  • Easy to assemble mower
Cons
  • Solid grass box doesn’t collapse for storage
  • No mulching option
  • Limited cutting heights
  • No rear roller for striped lawn appearance

94The Bosch EasyRotak 36-550 is a cordless lawn mower with 5 cutting heights ranging from 25mm to 70mm, has a 37cm cutting width and a 40 litre hybrid grass collection box. The mower is supplied with 2 x 2.0Ah batteries that charge in around 65 minutes and is designed for lawns up to 550m² in size.

As far as basic cordless lawn mowers go, the Bosch EasyRotak 36-550 has everything you would need for quick and convenient garden maintenance. One of the things that irks a lot of buyers is that these cordless models come with a world of features that can be difficult to get to grips with and as a result add unnecessary cost. I mean, if you like that then great; there are some excellent options, but for people who want something a little simpler, this mower may well be just what you are looking for.

The mower is designed for small to medium gardens measuring up to 550m² hence its name. In fact, usually, the mower model number will refer to the cutting width rather than the area it is designed to cover, so this is a nice bit of additional information that can help you decide whether this mower is suitable for your needs. If you do need something a little smaller, it does have a younger brother; the Bosch City Mower 18 with a 32cm cutting deck ideal for spaces up to 300 square metres, that runs on an 18v battery, where this one operates on a 36v.

While there aren’t any complex functions, the Bosch 36-550 is designed for ease of use. It boasts superior ErgoFlex handles that give the mower a more comfortable position when working as well as being lightweight and beautifully easy to manoeuvre. But it doesn’t end there, take a look over my detailed Bosch EasyRotak 36-550 review and let’s discover more.

Main Features

  • 37cm cutting deck
  • 5 cutting heights
  • ErgoFlex handles
  • Batteries can be shared across other Bosch 36v tools
  • Easy to store grass box
  • Fast charging times
  • Grass combs for close to edge cutting

This Mower Is Suitable For

  • People with lawns up to 550m² in size.
  • Those who like their mower to also collect the leaves whilst mowing.
  • People that want a premium brand mower that has a very good build quality.
  • Those that like a simple mower without a plethora of unnecessary features.
  • People who like an ergonomically designed mower for increased comfort whilst mowing.
  • People who like a striped lawn (Rear Roller).

Conclusion

Where compact mowers that pack a punch are concerned, you’ll struggle to find anything quite as impressive as the Bosch EasyRotak 36-550. While this isn’t a mower that is going to give you a multitude of options, it is perfect for everyday mowing in a small to medium sized garden.

With incredibly fast charging batteries that can be power shared across the entire Bosch 36v range, this is hugely convenient for Bosch fans. Moreover, for anyone that has previously found mowing to be an uncomfortable experience, the ErgoFlex handle system will transform how you feel about mowing the lawn.

Pros
  • Lightweight and easy to manoeuvre
  • Rear roller for striped lawn
  • Ergonomic handles promotes better posture
  • Simple and well placed controls
  • Great for gardens up to 550m²
  • Grass edge combs for close to edge cutting
  • Fast charging, power share battery
Cons
  • No mulching or side discharge
  • Lacks features of larger Universal and Advanced Rotak models

86The Mountfield Electress 30 Li is an electric cordless lawn mower weighing just 11kg and is powered by one 4Ah battery. It has a 30cm cutting blade, a 30 litre grass collection bag and is designed for smaller lawns up to 150m². There are 3 cutting heights available that range from 25mm to 75mm and the mower comes with a two year manufactures warranty.

While I would always suggest investing in a lawnmower if you want power and quality, this same power and quality can often be found in smaller mowers for a much more affordable cost. A prime example of this is the Mountfield Electress 30 Li which is a well-built, reliable and compact little mower ideal for smaller gardens. If you don’t want the hassle of a petrol mower but want similar power, something like this won’t disappoint.

While it may be compact, the Electress 30 Li runs on a powerful 4.0Ah STIGA battery and runs incredibly well. You might only want to cover a smaller area with this model since it is designed for lawns up to 150m² and has a shorter run time. But if you’re tackling a small patch, I couldn’t recommend much else for the job.

Main Features

  • 30cm cutting width
  • 1 x 4.0Ah STIGA battery
  • Durable polypropylene deck
  • 30-litre grass box
  • up to 20 minutes running time
  • 2-year warranty

Conclusion

The Freedom 100 series is designed for affordability and performance. This is the smallest lawn mower from the range but small is definitely mighty in this case. The Mountfield Electress 30 Li runs on a powerful battery that gives it that spring in its step that many mowers are missing.

It is perfect for gardens up to 150 square metres and comes with a choice of three cutting heights. It might not be the most diverse mower with only cut and collect but it offers you more than enough to keep the grass looking its best.

Pros
  • 30 litre grass bag is more than enough for small gardens.
  • Lightweight and compact at only 11kg.
  • Excellent traction for slippery or uneven lawns.
  • Excellent build quality.
  • Comes supplied with 1 x 4.0Ah battery and charger.
  • Batteries can be shared with other Freedom 100 Series garden tools.
Cons
  • No option to mulch the grass cuttings.
  • No central lever to adjust the limited 3 height settings.
  • No rear roller for a striped lawn appearance.
  • Limited range of other tools to share the battery (expanding in future).

There are 6 cutting heights that range from 25mm to 75mm and the mower comes with a two year manufactures warranty. .

If you are looking for a well built lawn mower then one of the first brands that I would always suggest would be Mountfield. The brand is owned by Stiga, so you can feel confident of the build quality, but there is a lot more to get excited about. This might be a budget lawn mower but you’d never know when you look at the impressive range of features.

The Electress 34 has a great range of cutting heights, central adjustment, excellent traction and powerful lithium ion batteries plus much more besides. I’m really excited to share the ins and outs of this product with you so let’s dive into my Mountfield Electress 34 Li review to find out more.

Conclusion

Within the Freedom 100 series, there are three lawn mowers, all with different area sizes in mind. Right in the middle of this is the Electress 34 Li which is a reliable and powerful little lawn mower designed for everyday use in the small garden. While it doesn’t have as many features as some of the more high end models such as mulching or a rear roller, it does provide you with everything you need to have a nicely maintained garden with very little effort.

84The WORX WG730E is a cordless lawn mower that is supplied with a 4Ah battery and charger that produces 35 minutes of run time. It has a 30 litre grass collection box, a 30cm cutting width and has 3 cutting heights that range from 30mm to 70mm.

If you know me, you will know that I rate the WORX lawn mowers very highly, so when I heard about the release of their latest budget cordless mower for 2021, needless to say, I was more than excited - and I wasn’t left disappointed. While there are some drawbacks to this model, if you are looking for something quick, efficient and easy to use, then this might be worth considering.

The WORX WG730E is ideal for smaller gardens thanks to the 30cm cutting width and compact design. It also has a 30-litre grass collection box made from durable plastic, which is perfect for anything below 200m². It comes with three cutting heights, which admittedly, isn’t the most generous number, but it’s more than enough to get the job done in a reasonably versatile manner.

For what you are paying, the lack of fancy features isn’t really an issue especially when you consider that you are getting the battery and the charger in with your purchase. In my WORX WG730E review, I’ll be taking a more in-depth look at this exciting new lawn mower.

Main Features

  • 30cm cutting width
  • 3 cutting heights
  • Plastic 30-litre grass collection box
  • Safety key
  • Power share battery
  • Brushless motor
  • Cut to edge
  • Foldable padded handle

This Mower Is Suitable For

  • People with lawns about 200m² in size.
  • Those that want a lightweight and compact cordless lawn mower that is easy to manoeuvre.
  • People who want a smaller deck size to accommodate smaller strips of lawn.
  • Those that DON'T require mulching or rear discharge.
  • Storage is limited.
  • Do not want to spend over £200 on a mower.

Conclusion

The WORX WG730E is a lightweight, compact and nifty little lawn mower that is perfect for small spaces and people who want something budget friendly. But despite its low cost, this lawn mower is still bursting with features that make it ideal for day-to-day use. A 30cm cutting deck and cut to edge design makes tackling your small lawn almost effortless.

Yes, it may not have various mowing modes or loads of cutting heights, but what it lacks in versatility, it more than makes up for in power thanks to its 20v 4.0Ah battery and its 3500rpm. You’ll get a clean, accurate cut in very little time, allowing you to get on with more important things than gardening chores. This is a new mower for 2021 so make sure you get in quick as I have a feeling these are going to sell like the proverbial hotcakes!

  • Safety key included
  • Cut to edge deck design

84The Greenworks 40V is a cordless lawn mower that has a deck size of 35cm, covers lawns up to 300m² and has 5 cutting heights between 20mm and 80mm. This Greenworks cordless lawn mower has a large 40 litre grass collection box, charges in a very respectable 30 minutes, provides up to 30 minutes of run time and has the ability to mulch the lawn clippings without having to purchase any additional accessories.

The Greenworks 40V Cordless Lawn Mower 35cm (14") is one of the best selling cordless lawn mowers in the UK.

The mower is indeed packed with features you would expect to see in higher end cordless mowers and certainly has the ability to cut a lawn around 300 meters square (roughly slightly larger than the size of a tennis court).

Main Features

  • Covers areas up to 300m² in size per battery
  • 1 x 40V, 2Ah Li-on battery (optional second 40V, 2Ah battery)
  • Blade length: 35 cm
  • Number of Cutting Height: 5 (20mm-80mm)
  • Grass box capacity: 40 litre
  • Charge time: impressive 30 minutes
  • Free run time: 30 minutes per 2Ah battery
  • Mulching option

This Mower Is Suitable For

  • People with lawns up to 300m² in size.
  • Those who require a quick battery charge time (30mins).
  • People who want a battery that is interchangeable with other Greenworks garden tools.
  • Those who want the option to mulch and cut grass with the same mower.
  • Those who require a medium size cutting deck (35cm) that can work efficiently in small, medium and large gardens.
  • People who want a large grass collection box (40L) to reduce the amount of stops.
  • People who have limited storage as this mower is compact with folding handles.

Conclusion

Overall this is a very good mower, I actually rate it very slightly higher than the Flymo Mighti-Mo 300 Li due to its portability, good build quality, slightly larger deck size, faster charge time and above all great value for money.

The extra features like the removable safety key is a nice touch but one that you will most probably never use. Besides you want features that will help you achieve a lovely looking lawn with least amount of work and effort.

The  Greenworks 40V is very proficient at cutting varying lengths and thickness of grass for such a lightweight cordless mower this is very impressive. It’s worth mentioning that by cutting more regularly and avoiding very long or wet grass this should avoid putting too much strain on the battery. Remember to always keep the battery charged and stored in a dry place over winter.

With this mower you’re getting features normally found in high priced cordless mowers, so this is a very reasonable price for such a well performing, durable and reliable lawn mover.

But do I think it’s better than its closest competitors? Yes I do!

Pros
  • Mulching Facility
  • Battery is Interchangeable with Other Greenworks Tools
  • 40 Litre Grass Box
  • Number of Cutting Height: 5 (20mm-80mm)
  • Impressive 30 minutes Charge Time
Cons
  • No Rear Roller for a Striped Lawn Appearance

The Flymo Mighti-Mo 300 Li Cordless Battery lawn mower is one of the best selling cordless lawn mowers in the UK for small lawns. It has the ability to cut a lawn up to 250 meters square (roughly the size of a tennis court).

Main Features

  • Covers areas reaching 250m² in size
  • 40V, 2Ah Li-on battery lawnmower
  • Blade length: 30 cm
  • Number of Cutting Height: 5 (25mm-65mm)
  • Grass box capacity: 30 L
  • Charge time: 120 minutes
  • Free run time: 25 minutes

This Mower Is Suitable For

  • People with lawns up to 250m² in size.
  • Those who require a narrow cutting width (30cm).
  • People with lawns that are split into different areas, with smaller strips of lawn.
  • People who require a light-weight easy to manoeuvre cordless mower.
  • Those who have limited storage space.
  • Those who want a well known brand that is excellent value for money under £250.

Conclusion

Well, in terms of functionality it's not quite as good as the WORX WG776E. What is outstanding about this mower is the price and value for money. This cordless mower is currently priced at around £200 which is similar price to that of the WORX, that makes the Flymo a genuine option when choosing a cordless mower. To be honest they both cut equally as good as each other, so if you can live with the longer charge times and a few functions missing (that you will most probably not need anyway) then please consider this mower seriously.

Overall, I think this is a fantastic mower that has a good build quality and I would encourage everyone with a garden under 250 m² to consider purchasing one. In fact, I think it's the best value mower you can purchase right now.

Pros
  • Narrow Cutting Width
  • Light Weight (9.4 KG)
  • 30 Litre Grass Box
  • Safety Key
  • Excellent Value
Cons
  • Slower Charge Time
  • Not for Larger Lawns

85The Bosch Rotak 32 LI includes features such as a 32cm blade, rear roller for striped lawns, three cutting heights, a charge time of 90 minutes and a free run time of 30 minutes. The Bosch 32 LI cordless lawn mower weighs just 10.2 kg and covers a lawn reaching up to 300 metres squared and is supplied with a 31 litre grass box.

The Bosch Rotak 32 LI Ergo-Flex Cordless lawn mower is quite easily the most feature rich, high quality model currently on the market.

I would say that it competes very well with the likes of the Flymo Mighti-Mo 300 and the WORX WG779E.2. They are all very similar in terms of deck size and cover a similar amount of ground, but are they all as good as each other?

By the end of this review you will know exactly which one is the perfect mower for your garden.

The Bosch Rotak 32 LI Ergo-Flex is indeed packed with features found in more higher end cordless mowers and certainly has the ability to cut a lawn up to 300 metres square (roughly a little larger than the size of a tennis court), but it needs to be compared to its nearest rival, the Flymo Mighti-Mo 300, to judge how good this mower really is.

This mower is built in the UK. Why does this matter? Well, customer service, warranty, quality and the availability of spare parts are second to none.

Below I’ll be detailing all the features and functions of the Bosch Rotak 32 LI Ergo-Flex, both good and not so good and then comparing to the Flymo Mighti-Mo 300 so you understand exactly what you’re getting for your money.

Main Features

  • Covers areas reaching 300m² in size
  • 36-volt/2.6 Ah lithium-ion battery
  • Blade length: 32 cm
  • Roller for stripey lawn
  • Weight: 10.2 kg
  • Number of Cutting Height: 3 (30mm – 60mm)
  • Grass box capacity: 31 L
  • Charge time: 90 minutes (80% charge in only 45 minutes)
  • Free run time: 30 minutes

This Mower Is Suitable For

  • People with gardens up to 300m² in size.
  • People who like a stripey lawn as it is supplied with a rear roller.
  • People who want a smaller deck size to accommodate smaller strips of lawn.
  • Those who like a light weight mower that has a good build quality.
  • People with garden split up into different areas, with smaller strips of lawn.

Conclusion

At this price range, this really gives great value for money and you would be very hard pressed to find a cordless mower that performs this well and has such a good build quality for this price. To get the best out of this mower you will need to cut your lawn more regularly and not let the grass grow too high or dense as it may struggle to cut it, this is however common with all cordless mowers at this price point and specification.

Overall I think this is a fantastic mower and I encourage everyone with a garden under 300 m² to purchase one. In fact, I think it’s the best mower at this level you can purchase right now!

FAQ

How Can I Reduce The Carbon Footprint Of My Mower?

One of the most obvious ways to reduce the carbon footprint of your lawn mower is to use a manual or electric model as these emit no fumes.

However, if you’re keen to stick with a petrol powered lawn mower then there are a few things you can do to limit the carbon footprint of your machine.

  • Be careful when refuelling your lawn mower so that you don’t spill any petrol. It’s been quoted that there are more than 17 millions gallons of mower fuel spilled each year and when this evaporates, it is harmful to the environment.
  • When buying a petrol lawn mower, try to opt for a four stroke engine as these are known to be less damaging to the environment. If you have to use a two stroke engine then it’s vital to get the correct fuel to oil ratio for maximum eco friendliness.
  • Good maintenance is one of the best ways to limit the number of emissions your petrol lawn mower puts out. Dedicate some time in your lawn care schedule to tending to your machine.
  • It’s best to use a petrol lawn mower early in the morning or in the early evening. On high ozone days, where the levels of pollution combined with the weather could be more damaging to the environment, it’s best not to mow at all.

What Are The Alternative To Petrol Powered Lawn Mowers?

If you’re keen to reduce your carbon footprint when mowing then switching from a petrol mower is the best thing you can do. There are several alternatives including a range of electric lawn mowers like corded, battery powered and robotic.

There are also manual push lawn mowers which require no power at all and are the most eco-friendly option. However, they do require some more physical effort from the user.

What Are The Environmental Impacts Of Using A Petrol Powered Lawn Mower?

The emissions from a petrol powered lawn mower include hydrocarbons which are one of the main contributors to pollutants in the air and climate change. Other toxins in the emissions include nitrogen oxide, methane, ethanol and ethane which can cause things like acid rain.

When refilling a petrol powered lawn mower, there is a high risk of spilling the fuel. When this sits on the ground it will evaporate into the atmosphere causing further damage.

Moreover, petrol lawn mowers are the noisiest of all mowers so contribute significantly to noise pollution.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Electric Lawn Mowers?

I’ve heard a lot of people talking about the fact that petrol powered lawn mowers are the best option. However, this is something of an outdated mindset because modern electric models are easily rivalling their petrol cousins. Here are just some of the benefits of using an electric lawn mower, in a nutshell.

  • Electric lawn mowers, whether mains powered or battery powered, do not emit any harmful gases into the atmosphere.
  • Modern electric lawn mowers have some serious power that enables them to cut the lawn in a clean, precise and neat way that is just as good as a petrol model.
  • Being lightweight, electric mowers are often much easier and more comfortable to use and easier to manoeuvre, especially when you have a large garden or your physical fitness isn’t great.
  • Unlike petrol lawn mowers, the amount of maintenance when using an electric lawn mower is minimal. It often requires nothing more than brushing away grass clippings and debris and sharpening/replacing the blades periodically.
  • Electric lawn mowers are much quieter than petrol ones.
  • In many cases, electric lawn mowers are much more affordable than petrol models as they are less expensive to manufacture. Not to mention that, due to the lower amount of maintenance, the running costs are much lower.

What Steps Can I Take To Make My Lawn Mower More Eco Friendly?

The best way to make your lawn mower more eco-friendly is to use a model that doesn’t emit harmful fumes such as a manual, electric or robotic lawn mower.
