Summary
The Bosch EasyRotak 36-550 is a cordless lawn mower with 5 cutting heights ranging from 25mm to 70mm, has a 37cm cutting width and a 40 litre solid grass collection box. The mower is supplied with 2 x 2.0Ah batteries that charge in around 65 minutes and is designed for lawns up to 550m² in size.
As far as basic cordless lawn mowers go, the Bosch EasyRotak 36-550 has everything you would need for quick and convenient garden maintenance. One of the things that irks a lot of buyers is that these cordless models come with a world of features that can be difficult to get to grips with and as a result add unnecessary cost. I mean, if you like that then great; there are some excellent options, but for people who want something a little simpler, this mower may well be just what you are looking for.
The mower is designed for small to medium gardens measuring up to 550m² hence its name. In fact, usually, the mower model number will refer to the cutting width rather than the area it is designed to cover, so this is a nice bit of additional information that can help you decide whether this mower is suitable for your needs. If you do need something a little smaller, it does have a younger brother; the Bosch City Mower 18 with a 32cm cutting deck ideal for spaces up to 300 square metres, that runs on an 18v battery, where this one operates on a 36v.
While there aren’t any complex functions, the Bosch 36-550 is designed for ease of use. It boasts superior ErgoFlex handles that give the mower a more comfortable position when working as well as being lightweight and beautifully easy to manoeuvre. But it doesn’t end there, take a look over my detailed Bosch EasyRotak 36-550 review and let’s discover more.
Main Features
- 37cm cutting deck
- 5 cutting heights
- ErgoFlex handles
- Batteries can be shared across other Bosch 36v tools
- Easy to store grass box
- Fast charging times
- Grass combs for close to edge cutting
Power System And Batteries
Before I dig into the power behind this Bosch EasyRotak 36-550 mower, I have to point out that you do have the option to buy this as a bare tool, if you prefer. Since this uses the Bosch 36v battery range, if you already have a lot of these tools, you might not need another battery. However, if you’re new to the range, the charger and batteries come included as standard. Now, this may sound somewhat bizarre, but if you do purchase this mower “bare tool” it will NOT come supplied with a rear roller.
What impressed me most was how quickly the batteries charged. I’d barely had time to finish my sandwich and cup of tea before it was up to 80% – in just 30 minutes! If you’re willing to wait an hour then you’ll be rewarded with a fully charged battery. There is also an option to upgrade to a fast charger which will see the batteries charge time reduced in half the time; I told you this was a convenient mower!
Your also have the option to purchase a 4.0Ah battery and is the maximum for this mower. The 4.0Ah hour battery will take around 125 minutes to charge to 100% using the standard charger supplied.
A fully charged 2.0Ah battery will give you around 25 minutes of runtime, naturally depending on the condition of the lawn.

Features In Detail
Performance
If you have a lot of walls or fences in the garden, you’ll know that it can be difficult to cut right to the edge of the lawn. That’s why Bosch has included grass combs which lift and pull the grass into the path of the blade, comes handy especially in trickier areas, giving you a much cleaner and more even cut. This is further enhanced by the fact that the rear wheels do not protrude beyond the width of the deck.
Moreover, this is an effortlessly lightweight piece of equipment so even though it isn’t self-propelled, it won’t feel like a terribly laborious task.
Deck and Blade
To get that lightweight feel that I have discussed, the EasyRotak boasts a plastic deck. Now, OK, you could be forgiven for thinking that plastic isn’t going to give you the durability of steel, but modern materials have come a long way and as such, the polymers used to create these decks are pretty robust. Although most cordless mowers have polypropylene decks, the Bosch deck is notably of a higher grade and quality compared to that of cheaper models and brands.
With a cutting diameter of 37cm, this fits in perfect with the notion that this is a mower designed for small to medium gardens.
Mulching
This mower doesn’t come with a mulching plug and unlike the Universal and Advanced Rotak models, a mulching plug cannot be purchased separately.
Handles
There has been a lot of thought and innovation in the creation of the handles on this mower and as such, you get a very comfortable experience. With ErgoFlex, the handle features four adjustment switches that allow you to position it in a way that feels good for you.
If you’ve struggled with uncomfortable mowers in the past then this is an excellent option. The whole point of this design is that the user stands in a more natural position and reduces strain which could go a long way in easing pain and discomfort that is exacerbated by other mowers.
Moreover, the handle features dual folding hinges meaning that storing it becomes much less of a hassle. There is also a handy carry handle in the middle of the mower to make moving it from the shed to the lawn much simpler.
Rear Roller (Stripes)
This Bosch EasyRotak 36-550 is supplied with a rear roller, however due to the lightweight nature of this mower, the stripes will not be long lasting as you would achieve with a heavier petrol lawn mower or a dedicated lawn roller.
**Please Note: If you purchase any Bosch battery mower complete with the battery and charger, it will be fitted with a rear roller. If you purchase the Bosch mower as a “Bare Tool” then NO rear roller is fitted.
Height Adjustment
While this is quite a basic lawn mower, it does come with a choice of five cutting heights that range between 25mm and 70mm, so you’ve got a good degree of versatility in how you cut. What’s more, there’s no fiddly adjustments, the single lever located on the top of the mower deck is quick and effortless to use.
Grass Collection Box
One of the things that really caught my eye when I looked at the Bosch EasyRotak 36-550 was the grass collection box. I know, it might not seem like much but this nifty little feature is stackable and splits into two pieces, folding flat for storage. If you’re short on shed space, this is an innovation that cannot be missed. This is great because I normally advice against a solid grass collection box in favour of a hybrid for the very reason of limited storage.
The grass box will hold up to 40 litres, so it isn’t the biggest on the market but it’s certainly enough to aid you around a smaller garden.
Practicalities
If you’ve had it with noisy lawn mowers, the EasyRotak 36-550 will be right up your street. This mower is surprisingly quiet even though it does not have ProSilence (up to 30% quieter) like its bigger brothers the Universal and Advanced Rotak. This is great if you lead a busy lifestyle and only tend to have time to mow at the very beginning or end of the day and don’t want to disturb the neighbours.
Furthermore, provided that you register your machine, you will get a three-year warranty. There isn’t a lot that could go wrong with the mower, it’s pretty low maintenance and practically runs itself. But in the event that something did run amok, you’ve got the confidence that it’ll be repaired or replaced.
I also couldn’t ignore how easy the mower was to start. With a simple push button control, you can get going in no time at all. If you’re looking to move to a cordless after having used a petrol mower, you may be losing some power but this simplicity will be a massive gain.

Pros and Cons
Should You Buy This Model?
Do I think you should buy this lawn mower? If you’re looking for something uber-simple yet fully functional, then without a doubt, I would recommend this mower.
That said, there will be those of you reading this that want something with a few more features. If you like the look of this but want a little more, you can upgrade to the Universal Rotak range. To go that one step further, Bosch also offers the Advanced Rotak mower range, which is ideal for more complex needs and also includes a leaf collection blade as well as larger decks, ErgoFlex handles to name a few.
Now, I’m not saying this mower is skimping on features, because that is what the EasyRotak range is designed for. For those that want a mower that is well built and will cut the lawn effectively and cleanly, without features you will not use and don’t want to pay for, then this Bosch EasyRotak 36-550 may well be the perfect mower for you.
This Mower Is Suitable For
- People with lawns up to 550m² in size.
- People that want a premium brand mower that has a very good build quality.
- Those that like a simple mower without a plethora of unnecessary features.
- People who like an ergonomically designed mower for increased comfort whilst mowing.
- People who like a striped lawn (rear roller).
Conclusion
Where compact mowers that pack a punch are concerned, you’ll struggle to find anything quite as impressive as the Bosch EasyRotak 36-550. While this isn’t a mower that is going to give you a multitude of options, it is perfect for everyday mowing in a small to medium sized garden.
With incredibly fast charging batteries that can be power shared across the entire Bosch 36v range, this is hugely convenient for Bosch fans. Moreover, for anyone that has previously found mowing to be an uncomfortable experience, the ErgoFlex handle system will transform how you feel about mowing the lawn.

Having purchased this model with battery and charger here in NZ, I was disappointed not to receive it with the rear roller fitted or supplied.
When I questioned this with Bosch Australia I have been given to believe that the models sold here are different, and a roller cannot be fitted.
I find that hard to believe, and wonder if what I’m told is actually fact, but am unable to get Bosch head office in Germany to confirm.
I would like somebody to explain why they would vary from region to region, given they are essentially the same model number and specs
