Summary
The Ryobi RLM18X33B40 is a battery powered cordless lawn mower that is supplied with a 4.0Ah 18v lithium-ion battery that provides up to 30 minutes of runtime. It has a 33cm deck size, a 35 litre grass collection box, 5 cutting heights from 25mm to 65mm, and is lightweight at just 9Kg. The Ryobi 18V ONE+ is supplied with a mulching plug and is covered by a 3 year Ryobi warranty when you register your mower within 30 days of purchase.
The Ryobi RLM18X33B40 (or OLM1833B – body only) is a nifty little cordless mower that has a cutting width suitable for smaller lawns, but boasts a wealth of features that make this a model worth considering.
What’s even better is that there is an excellent range of options when it comes to choosing which version of this mower will meet your needs best. If you already have a battery and charger, there is the option to purchase the body only, look for the OLM1833B. However, if you’re in the market for mower and power, there are two further choices – the RLM18X33B40 which comes with a 4.0Ah battery, or the slightly less 2.5Ah battery that comes with the RLM18C33B25 – you certainly aren’t limited on choice.
Once you’ve decided on the model, you can get down to looking at the nitty-gritty in terms of features and with this one, you’re looking at an impressive 5 cutting heights, an EasyEdge system which allows you to cut right to the edge of the lawn and a mower that is lightweight and easily stored when not in use.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Main Features
- 33cm cutting width
- EasyEdge system
- 5 cutting heights
- Ergonomic, foldable handle
- Powerful 4.0Ah battery
- 35-litre grass collection bag
Power System & Batteries

As I mentioned earlier, this model, the Ryobi RLM18X33B40 comes with a 4.0Ah battery which offers, on average around 30 minutes of mowing performance time on each charge. The great feature of the batteries supplied with this mower is their compatibility with over 100 other Ryobi power tools. Any Ryobi tool that displays the ONE+ logo, means it is compatible. So what this does mean is, if you already own Ryobi tools you may well be able to purchase this mower as a bare tool only (Ryobi OLM1833B – body only).
If you have a really small lawn, then there is the option to go for the RLM18C33B25 which comes with a 2.5Ah battery which offers a run time of around 15-20 minutes. My advice would be to opt for at least the 4.0Ah battery and even better would be a 5.0Ah battery (this battery is available to purchase separately).
Many manufactures will not give you the option to purchase their mowers with no battery (bare tool), so it’s nice to see that Ryobi have given the flexibility to purchase this mower to suit your own needs.
These lithium-ion batteries are well-known for their longevity and deliver smooth power throughout the mow. Each battery will require 120 minutes of charging time.
Summary of Battery Options
- Ryobi OLM1833B – Body Only – No Battery
- Ryobi RLM18C33B25 – 2.5Ah Battery
- Ryobi RLM18X33B40 – 4.0Ah Battery
Battery Charger
The mower comes complete with its own battery charger, which, as I discussed above, will give full juice to the battery within 120 minutes.
Once the battery is charged to 80%, a handy ready-to-go light lets you know that it’s time to mow.

Features In Detail
Deck & Blade
The deck is made from plastic, which is a common mower material and whilst in days gone by, this material may have been substandard, modern plastics are far more durable and hard-wearing. Furthermore, plastic is not subject to corrosion or rust so is ideal for outdoor use.
The blades offer impeccable cutting but what is most interesting is the EasyEdge feature which allows the blades to cut right up to the edge of the lawn, whether there is a wall or a fence. This dynamic little mower will get right up there and make light work of what is usually a challenging task.
As you will know, Ryobi is a trusted and widely used brand so obtaining spare blades, other parts and support is not going to be an issue like some other lesser known brands.

Cutting Diameter
You’re getting a 33cm cutting width with the mower and whilst this is on the smaller side compared to some other models, it is perfect if you have a smaller lawn that doesn’t require a hefty, wide mower.
Ryobi claims that this is the ideal piece of equipment for tackling lawned areas up to 150 square metres, anything more and you are going to want a larger model. See the comparison chart below to compare this model to other larger Ryobi lawn mowers.
Handles
One of the most notable features of the handle on this mower is that it has an adjustable height with three different settings. The handle is easy to alter so you won’t be spending hours trying to figure it out.
The ergonomic handle design provides comfortable use and the easy to reach controls make for a simple mowing experience. There is a lever on both the left and right side of the bars and only one handle needs to be pressed to start the mower. This is useful for turning the mower single handed either for both left and right turns.
The handles do fold as you would expect, but only at the mid point. If you want to fold the handles completely then you will need to unscrew the lower retaining bolts and pull the bars back out from the deck. No big deal, but not as easy as some other mowers, should you want to remove it.
Wheels
The Ryobi RLM18X33B40 features four plastic wheels, that make light work going over the lawn, adding to the easy experience. The rear wheels are slightly larger for extra grip, manoeuvrability and stability.
Height Adjustment

This mower has a very good range of cutting heights giving you the freedom to cut your lawn to a level that suits you.
The single point central adjustment is easy to operate with a single lever and offers cutting heights between 25mm and 65mm. To have 5 cutting height options with such a good range is extremely diverse for a mower of this size.
Roller (Stripes)
This model does not have a roller for creating a striped lawn.
Mulching
The Ryobi RLM18X33B40 comes with a mulching plug so that you have the option to switch to the mulching mode when you need it.
Mulching allows the grass cuttings to be delivered back to the lawn and acts as a great natural fertiliser giving your lawn a green and healthy appearance.

Grass Collection Box
A smaller model such as this that features a smaller cutting width is bound to have a smaller capacity where grass collection is concerned. But for the size of the mower, the 33-litre grass bag is ideal.
This is a fabric bag with a plastic top that makes emptying a cinch. It is easily detached from the body of the mower, adding even more to the easy-use of this machine. Attaching the grass collection box was not so easy, you will get used to attaching it but it does seem a little tricky at first.
Having fabric sides means this grass collection box will fold flat for easy and reduced storage. Furthermore, it will also ensure good air circulation to improve the collection performance.
Practicalities

I have already touched on how easy this mower is to work with thanks to the simple controls and ergonomic design, but practically, it doesn’t stop delivering there.
The handle folds down for easy storage, but what I find most impressive with this one is its super lightweight design which weighs in at just 9kg. This makes it perfect for people who don’t want to or cannot haul around a bulky mower.
What’s more, the grass collection bag can be easily collapsed giving you even less need for a big storage space.
Safety Features
One of the most obvious things in terms of safety is how comfortable the mower is to use. Thanks to the wide range of comfort features such as the adjustable handle and lightness of the body, mowing the lawn doesn’t pose any risk of physical exertion or harm.
Like most battery powered mowers, the Ryobi RLM18X33B40 has the central safety button that must be pressed with one hand whilst the other hand starts the mower using one of the plastic handles. As soon as the operator presence control lever (OPC) is released, the mower stops almost instantly.
The battery comes in a tough outer shell that offers protection – it’s no secret that a damaged battery casing can be dangerous but you needn’t be fearful about that with this model.

hi, just used this mower for the first time and the grass cuttings are not being collected in the bag, any ideas why please?
Hi Pauline
Have you removed the mulching plug? The mulching plug is inserted in the machine when you receive it.
If this plug is still in the machine, it will not collect the cuttings.
Kind regards
Mark
