Ryobi is one of the best consumer brands out there with a huge range of garden and power tools that are reliable and effective. So, when I heard about the Ryobi RY18LM37A-140 cordless lawn mower, I just had to check it out. It is one of a range of garden tools that use the ONE+ battery system and comes with enough features to satisfy the needs of most domestic users, and some handy storage quirks that make it perfect for anyone who is limited on space.
Designed for medium sized lawns up to 225m² with a single 4.0Ah battery (supplied), if you purchase a 5.0Ah battery for this mower it will provide larger coverage up to 375m². The Ryobi RY18LM37A-140 has a 37cm cutting width and a selection of six cutting heights ranging from 25mm to 70mm. It is great to see that Ryobi have also included a mulching plug as standard together with the EasyEdge™ system for close to edge cutting.
But what’s this mower like to operate and what is the quality of cut it produces? Well, let’s take a look and also see if there are any negatives you should be aware of.
- 37cm cutting deck
- 45 litre grass box
- Brushless motor – quieter with better performance
- Folding padded handles
- Left and right starter handles
- Power-share batteries with over 150 other tools
- Six cutting heights
- Mulching plug
- EasyEdge™ – cut closer to the edge with less trimming required
Power System & Batteries
The Ryobi RY18LM37A-140 is a cordless lawn mower that comes supplied with a powerful 18 volt 4.0Ah battery, that will provide around 20 minutes of mowing time on a single battery charge. Most cordless lawn mowers will come supplied with just a 2.5Ah battery, so this one could be considered slightly more powerful with a longer run-time compared to its competition. In any case, it will certainly give you the get up and go you need to tackle a medium lawn, about the size of a tennis court, with ease.
Just bear in mind that the longer your grass, the less run-time you will achieve from the battery.
You may notice that there are two battery ports on this mower, only one is “live” and powers the mower. The second port is to allow you to store a second optional spare battery, that will need to be swapped over when the first is depleted.
As mentioned earlier, this mower is part of the ONE+ range of home and garden tools. This means you can share the battery with over 150 other 18v Ryobi tools.
Already have Ryobi 18v batteries? Great as this mower can also be purchased without the battery and charger as a “bare tool” model.
Summary of Battery Options
- Ryobi RY18LMX37A-0 – Body Only – No Battery
- Ryobi RY18LM37A-140 – 4.0Ah Battery
The mower comes complete with its own battery charger, which, as I discussed above, will give full juice to the battery within 120 minutes.
Once the battery is charged to 80%, a handy ready-to-go light lets you know that it’s time to mow.

One of the things that really jumped out at me about the RY18LM37A-140 was how conveniently it cuts. It makes use of EasyEdge™ technology, which causes the blades of grass to be pulled into the blade’s path meaning that nothing goes uncut. This is perfect for getting right up to the edges along fences, walls and pathways.
The 18 volt 4.0Ah battery together with the brushless motor is powerful enough to produce a clean and precise cut, even on longer grass.
Features In Detail
Deck & Blade
The deck is made from plastic, which is a common mower material and whilst in days gone by, this material may have been substandard, modern plastics are far more durable and hard-wearing. Furthermore, plastic is not subject to corrosion or rust so is ideal for outdoor use. The smooth plastic surface inside of the deck helps to make removing grass and cleaning easy.
The blades offer impeccable cutting, but what is most interesting is the EasyEdge™ feature, which allows the blades to cut right up to the edge of the lawn, whether there is a wall or a fence. This manoeuvrable, compact mower will get right up there and make light work of what is usually a challenging task.
As you will know, Ryobi is a trusted and widely used brand so obtaining spare blades, other parts and support is not going to be an issue like some other lesser known brands.
The Ryobi RY18LM37A-140 features a 37cm cutting width, which is ideal for small to medium sized lawns. However, Ryobi hasn’t stopped there; by purchasing additional batteries you will be able to mow for an extended period of time, therefore covering a greater area. There does however, come a point when a mower with a larger deck is better suited to larger lawns to reduce the number of passes.
If you do have a larger lawn, and are looking for a lager deck, then the bigger model Ryobi RY18LMX40A-0 with its 40cm deck may be a better choice for you.
If on the other hand you have a smaller lawn and need a mower with a smaller deck, then Ryobi offer the smaller brother the RLM18X33B40 with its 33cm cutting width. A full review of the Ryobi RLM18X33B40 can be seen here.
Ryobi has paid real attention to detail when it comes to the handles. Primarily, you will notice that they are padded, and offer you the choice of positioning the handles depending on what you find most comfortable, in terms of length and angle.
As well as this, the handles fold down at the mid and lower points making storing the lawn mower much more convenient, especially when you are pushed for space. This function uses a quick release mechanism at the lower point for added ease of use. That said, the midpoint can be a little trickier and time-consuming to use, since you must make sure that it is unscrewed far enough to allow the handles to fold. But once you get used to it, the process will become second nature.
The Ryobi RY18LM37A-140 features a choice of six cutting heights. While this isn’t the largest number, I’ve ever seen on a cordless mower, it is definitely enough to tackle your lawn over the course of the year to accommodate the varying seasons.
What’s more, switching between the cutting heights is beautifully simple as the mower boasts a single point adjustment to set the height anywhere between 25mm and 75mm.
Rear Roller (Stripes)
This model does not have a rear roller for creating a striped lawn.
The Ryobi RY18LM37A-140 comes with a mulching plug. This can be inserted at the back of the mower and will change how the clippings are disposed of. Rather than being sent to the grass collection box, they will be circulated around the deck and delivered back to the lawn acting as a natural fertiliser.

Grass Collection Box
Considering that this lawn mower is designed for small to medium lawns, it still comes with a pretty decent sized grass box at 45 litres. What I really liked was that Ryobi designers have clearly continued the idea of easy storage over to the grass box and as such, you get a fully collapsible box that is a breeze to store, even when space is limited.
One thing missing from this grass collection box is a “Full Flap” indicator to tell you when it needs emptying.
When you invest in any home or garden product, you want to feel rest assured that you are going to receive excellent customer service should anything go wrong. Now, as I mentioned earlier, Ryobi is typically a reliable brand but as with anything, there are going to be problems from time to time. But most importantly, it is what a company does about it that sets them apart from the rest. Well, imagine my joy when I discovered the excellent support and customer service offered by Ryobi, as well as easy access to spare parts.
Something else that really stood out to me when it comes to practicalities was how lightweight the Ryobi RY18LM37A-140 is. At just a little over 15kg, it is far from being the heaviest cordless mower out there, which makes it easy to manoeuvre and effortless to carry.
A safety key is provided that needs to be inserted in the battery compartment in order for the mower to be started.
Like most battery powered mowers, the Ryobi RY18LM37A-140 has the central safety button that must be pressed with one hand, whilst the other hand starts the mower using one of the well positioned bar handles. As soon as the operator presence control lever (OPC) is released, the mower stops almost instantly.

Should You Buy This Model?
When it comes to the kind of person that would suit this mower, I would have to recommend it to anyone who wants convenience of cordless and a superior cut. Thanks to the EasyEdge™ feature, it’s great for walled or fenced gardens and will limit the amount of additional trimming work you need to do.
If you already have 18v Ryobi tools, then the bare tool model of this mower would make an ideal addition to your armoury of garden tools.
I’d also say that this was a good choice for someone who wants a cordless mower with a fair amount of features, but not one that is showy. You have a good degree of versatility in that there are six cutting heights and the option to mulch. For people with a smaller to medium sized lawns, this is a compact package with much to offer.
Are there cheaper mowers with this deck size on the market? Well, yes there sure is. Take the LawnMaster 34cm Cordless Lawn Mower – CLMF2434G, that is supplied with two, not one, 18v 4.0Ah batteries and the mulching plug is included like the Ryobi. But, this LawnMaster will cost £70 less than the Ryobi even with the extra battery. Having said that, LawnMaster do not have 150+ other tools available to share the battery with.
Remember, this mower comes with a 2 year warranty as standard, and can be extended to 3 years for free if you register your product within 30 days of purchase. To register your new mower, visit https://uk.ryobitools.eu/header/support/product-registration/warranty-information/
The Ryobi RY18LM37A-140 is a compact lawn mower that folds down for easy storage and comes with a good choice of mowing options, mulching ability as well as being easy to use. One of the most impressive things about the mower is its ability to share the battery with over 150 other home and garden tools. You simply will not get that flexibility with any other brand of lawn mower. It also boasts great cordless power for such a compact machine and gives you an immaculate finish to your lawn.
