Summary
This was my first test of a Hyundai electric corded lawn mower, and I was keen to see if it lived up to the high quality and performance of its petrol cousins. At the moment I am so impressed with Hyundai as they are such good value for money. With Hyundai garden products you get so much for your money without the compromise on quality that you can find with other brands.
Hyundai HYM3800E is a compact but powerful electric striping lawn mower for a small to medium-sized lawn.
The HYM3800E’s various features help the mower to cut grass with ease and precision. And the final result from this unassuming and inexpensive mulching mower will turn your neighbours green with envy.

Power System
The HYM3800E spins at a fast 3700 rpm under no load — faster than a standard petrol mower, so the resulting cut is that much cleaner. Though the sound production at the motor, 96 decibels, is around what you would have with a petrol mower.

I found that the 1600w motor was powerful enough to deal with tough overgrown grass effectively and never seemed to struggle. Now a 1600w motor and a 38cm deck size may be a little overkill for your lawn size. Not to worry, Hyundai have two smaller options for you to choose from shown below.

In terms of the noise levels on this mower, it seemed to my ears to be no louder or quieter than any other electric mower I have tested. The only mowers I can say was definitely quieter was the Bosch AdvancedRotak range.

Hyundai HYM3800E Video Review
My full video review below of this Hyundai HYM3800E, will demonstrate all the features and performance of this electric mower.
Blades
As mentioned, this mower has a mulching ability and therefore the blade is designed to allow this function. The blade acts like a food blender blade, ensuring the grass is cut multiple times into tiny pieces and then disperse deep into the lawn.
The blade is of good quality and provides a clean and precise cut. All mower blades will become blunt over time, so it is important to sharpen them periodically or alternatively replace them.
Height Adjustment
There is a 5-point central height control lever, which sets an even deck height across all four wheels. This lever is set up high, between the front and rear left wheels. The lever is also large and easy to grab, so you can reach it while standing behind the handlebar.
As you can see from my video above the height adjustment was very easy to use. This is naturally helped by the mower being lightweight and the larger than normal handle Hyundai provide for this purpose.
I’m often disappointed by the range of cutting heights offered by some other mowers I have tested. You should not cut your lawn too short, but some like a bowling green finish. As some mowers only go down to 35mm so this would be difficult to achieve. It’s great to see that this Hyundai HYM3800E goes all the way down to 20mm.
It is also possible to adjust the angle of the bars to 3 different positions. This is again a feature normally found on higher end and higher priced mowers. This is a really useful feature that allows you to get the position of the bars just right for your posture, therefore prolonged use is not going to cause backache. If you take a look at my video above you can see this in action.
Cutting Diameter
The 38-centimetre blade width works out to a cutting area of 0.45m2 per rotation. And this area, combined with the high-speed motor, means that you perform cleaner cuts in less time than many other small electric mowers.
And this cutting diameter extends beyond the width of the blade thanks to the grass combs behind the front wheels. The grass comb redirects and draws in the grass from the edge of the deck, in, towards the blade.
Roller (Stripes)
The Hyundai HYM3800E has a small and smooth plastic roller set between the rear wheels of the mower. This roller begins to work well once the grass box begins to fill due to the extra weight.
And the width of the roller is a few centimetres shorter than the blade width, so you may need to overlap cut areas by half if you want a neat striping effect.
It’s quite rare to see an electric mower with both a roller and mulching plug included out of the box, nice one Hyundai.
You will see from my video that the roller did not stripe the grass on this occasion. This was due to the poor condition of the uneven lawn and the light weight of this mower.
Mulching
You can remove the grass box and take the option of mulching instead. Hyundai includes a mulching plug with the HYM3800E if you prefer to recycle the clippings back into your lawn. The mulching plug clips easily into the rear chute of the mower, just remember to remove it if you decide to use the grass collection box.
For smaller lawns, consider the smaller Hyundai HYM3300E that also stripes, mulches, and weighs a little over 9kg. The HYM3300E has a 33-centimetre blade and a smaller grass box than the HYM3800E.

Grass Box Capacity
If you prefer a flawless lawn without millions of clippings spoiling your stripes, the HYM3800E comes with a 40-litre grass box.
You notice the benefits of a solid top on your grass collection when the grass is dry and dusty. Dust and debris tend to get thrown up into the operator’s face with all cloth collection bags, so having a solid top prevents this but still allows it to be folded flat.
The mesh material is of good quality but care will be needed around thorny bushes as this will damage the material and in extreme case will allow the grass cuttings to escape whilst mowing.
As you will see from my video above, the grass collection box fits on and removes very easily and once it is attached it will not bounce off when you hit the first bump in your lawn. The blue plastic flap fits snugly over the grass collection box, making a tight and secure fit.
And if you are not interested in extras, the HYM3200E is a simple, lightweight mower, with the same level of reliability as the larger models. The HYM3200E has a 32-centimetre blade and a solid 25-litre grass box.

Practicalities
Folding Handles
A really great practical feature with this Hyundai HYM3800E is the foldable foam grip handles. Now, you may be saying, most mower handles fold down, yes that is true, but it is not as easy as with this Hyundai. Remember the handles fold both at the central point and at the lower deck point. It so frustrating having to unscrew nuts and bolts to fold down the lower section with other mowers, this is not the case with this HYM3800E. Simply release off the large handle on each side, and fold for compact storage.
The operator presence control lever is located on both the left and right side of the bars, making it suitable for both left and right handed operators, and also for manoeuvring around corners.
Upright Storage
It took me a while to work out, but you can pin the handles behind the height adjustment lever to hold the handles in place when stored vertically. If you are not too sure how to do this, take a look at my video above. (it is easy but you need to know how)
Warranty
I have always found Hyundai garden products to be of good build quality and combined with the competitive pricing, make them great value.
It’s still good to know that should things go wrong you have a good and long warranty. This Hyundai HYM3800E is covered by Hyundai 3 year warranty.
Power Cord
Hyundai provide 10 metres of power-cable to give you a head start, but you may find, depending on the size of your lawn, that you need an extension cable to plug into your house’s wall socket. There is a cable clip on the handlebar to prevent the cable from pulling on the mower’s power box.
Maintenance
This is an electric mower, so no oil changes or servicing will be needed. You will need to sharpen the blade on a regular basis or if you notice that the grass blades are not cut cleanly. And the blade will need changing if it gets chipped or bent, to prevent it from damaging the motor.
Deck
The deck is solid plastic, so there is no chance of it rusting. Plastic is much lighter than metal, but the plastic deck will scuff on a concrete wall. There are also “fins” on each side of the deck to help guide the grass into the path of the blade so you have less trimming to do around the boundary of your lawn. This is by no means perfect and some trimming against walls and fences will always be required.
I was so impressed with the quality of the double skin deck. It felt strong and sturdy, was rigid and seemed to be of good quality. I will keep you updated over time in the comments below as to how well this mower performs in the long run, and if it is indeed built to last.
Safety Features
The operator must depress the safety button on the handlebar before they can pull on the throttle. On releasing the throttle, the blade stops quickly, the operator must again press the safety button, before continuing to use the machine.
Being a push mower, the throttle controls the power to the blade motor and nothing else.

Pros and Cons
Should You Buy this Model?
Electric mowers are great for those that do not want to spend time checking oil levels and changing spark plugs. Often, to get a mower with a roller, you will need to get a petrol mower. But, both the Hyundai HYM3800E and the Hyundai HYM3300E have the instruments to leave a professional finish.
I hope you could see from my video how well this mower dealt with the longer grass, it never seemed to be under-powered and struggling with the job at hand. You will need to ensure the grass collection box does not get too full as I found it starting to leave grass cuttings on the lawn due to reduced circulation.
The quality of the plastic and components is better than what you would expect from an electric mower at this price point. Hyundai have even included foam on the handle bars for comfort and to reduces vibrations, something not all manufactures have on their models.
Though Hyundai is less expensive than many other brands, it is still rare to hear people complain about short lifespans. This is backed up by a very respectable 3 year warranty. The HYM3800 is simple to start and low on maintenance. The Hyundai HYM3800E is a great machine for those that want to get the lawn cut with minimal effort and move on.

Remember, a battery mower is going to weigh more than its corded counterpart, however you have freedom not to be tethered to the socket and having to keep stopping to move the cable out of the mower’s path.

Conclusion
12.5 kilograms is a low weight for a mower that can do all the things the HYM3800 can achieve. Mulching, striping, and collecting are the three main functions a gardener looks for in a mower, and this little Hyundai can do it all.
The mulching option worked very well for me and the grass cuttings were cut finely and dispersed effectively into the lawn.
A rear roller on a mower of this weight (12.5 kg) is not going to be as effective at striping the lawn as a heavier petrol mower or dedicated lawn roller. It does work, but will not last for days on end.
The Hyundai HYM3800 is a good design, put together with competence and care. A good choice of cutting heights and a large easy to reach height-handle to choose them by. A fine choice for the small to medium sized-lawn owner that wants a simple life.
You simply cannot go wrong with this mower and it is such good value for money. Not only does it have all the features listed above, gets the job done with no fuss, it also has complete folding handles and vertical storage.

Agree with the comments here. This mower is great at cutting but it’s awful at collecting the grass. Tiny bit of dampness and you may as well take the basket off. Worst lawnmower I’ve had and a proper waste of money. Bought it last summer and I’m so annoyed with it I’m looking to buy a new mower now. I quite enjoy mowing the lawn, but not with this one.

I found the deck to be acceptable quality, as Hyundai have opted for the double skin, which to me seemed to be adequate and made it smooth and easy to clean. Simply doesn’t work if the grass is slightly damp. Grass doesn’t get thrown into the box just congregates underneath. Practically useless in any conditions other than perfect, so not really made for British lawns.
