Flymo Lawnrake Compact 3400 Electric Lawnrake Review, 750 W, Cutting Width 34 cm
Summary
The Flymo Lawnrake Compact 3400 Electric Lawnrake is a very handy, lightweight electric lawnrake with a powerful 750W motor with 34cm working width. The Flymo Lawnrake Compact 3400 comes with a large 34 litre collection box with innovative vision window so you can see when the collection box needs emptying. This lawnrake has a very respectable 6 rake heights from -5mm to +8mm and a cable length of 12 metres.
In my review of the Flymo Lawnrake Compact 3400 Electric Lawnrake you will lean about the pros and cons of this lawnrake and by the end of this review you will be in a position to know if this is the best choice of lawnrake for you and your lawn.
It’s that time of year when we look at the grass clippings left on our lawn from mowing over the Spring and Summer period and see how it has made our gardens appear generally untidy. In the past, picking up the leaves, grass clippings and all kinds of leftover debris was the job we all dreaded. That is until now!
Flymo has been around for over 50 years and have produced some outstanding gardening tools and equipment that helps to make gardening a pleasure and not a chore. Flymo certainly lived up to my expectations by producing this powerful and versatile electric Flymo Lawnrake Compact 3400.
Whilst the Flymo Lawnrake Compact 3400 looks like your normal lawnmower, this lawnrake aerates your lawn by removing build-ups of moss and thatch with speed and efficiency. Although this model isn’t ideal for larger lawns, the aerating function is very important for maintaining a healthy lawn.
The lawnrake easily removes moss and thatch for a much improved looking lawn and all the debris is left in the large collection box, so I didn’t have to empty it as often. This in my opinion makes it the perfect gadget to use in early Spring and late Autumn.
In my review, I will cover the unique characteristics and features that make this Flymo Lawnrake Compact 3400 such a practical and necessary tool.

Motor – 750 watt motor
With a powerful cylinder rake, the Flymo makes it easy to free your garden from moss and thatch. Although the 750W isn’t perhaps as powerful as other models, I found it was still sufficient if you have an average sized garden.
Should you require a more powerful Lawnrake for larger and more challenging lawns, then Bosch offer equivalent products with the Bosch ALR Electric Lawn Raker 900w or Bosch AVR 1100w Verticutter.

Blade/Line Type: Sprung Tines
This lawnrake uses sprung tines to remove deeply embedded thatch, moss and other organic growth found below the surface. During the scarifying process, slits are created which further aerate the lawn which enables water and air to get in.
Height Adjustment
Despite only having a smaller motor compared to other more expensive models, the Flymo brand really excels when it comes to the raking heights. Whilst some rakes only offer four different heights, this electric Lawnrake has a range of six settings available. These can be adjusted using a single lever, ranging from -5mm (below the surface) to +8mm (above the surface).
- Settings 1-3 are for pulling out the moss and thatch and raking the soil.
- Settings 4-5 are designed for light removal.
- Setting 6 is for collecting your grass cuttings, twigs, autumn leaves or any other lawn debris.
Raking Width
In addition to the height settings, the Flymo Lawnrake also excels with its cutting width of 34cm. When compared to other models in this section of the market, this width is slightly larger than the Bosch models such as the Bosch ALR 900 which has a 32cm width. Of course, continue to do your own research and you will probably find cutting width of up to 43cm but there’s no reason why 34cm can’t work with a normal-sized garden. Only those of you with a larger garden will need to consider the widest cutting widths.
Collection box capacity – 34 litre collection capacity
Included with the Lawnrake is a uniquely designed compact collection box which comes with a vision window so you will be able to see when the collection box needs emptying. With its 34 litre collection capacity, I know that some people will be disappointed as they are used to larger collection boxes. However, from my perspective, due to its clever design, the box compacts what it collects which enables the 34 litre volume to hold more and reduce the need to empty the box as frequently.
For those who prefer a larger collection box of 50 litres, then the Bosch ALR 900 or Bosch AVR 1100 would be worth looking at as they are almost 50% larger. On the bright side, the Vision Window means you can keep an eye on the capacity without stopping, unhooking the box and putting it back on.

Practicalities
This Lawnrake is easy to assemble. I managed to assemble it within 15 minutes but found that the instructions weren’t easy to follow. All you need to do is to clip on the wheels and handles.
Once assembled, I was able to adjust the height of the raking tynes with one simple lever. Once this was done, then I simply plugged in and was off.
I would avoid assembling this item in the front room as the tines may damage your carpet whilst being assembled.
Once I started using the machine, I was amazed by the amount of moss and thatch that this machine removed from the lawn. This Flymo Lawnrake Compact 3400 really is worth its weight in gold as it saved me many hours of hard work raking the lawn by hand. It simply does what it is supposed to do and provides a real sense of satisfaction.
Safety Features
As with most lawnrakes the Flymo is supplied with a Standard Operator Presence switch. The mower starter handles will not work until this button is held down.

Pros & Cons
Conclusion
In my opinion the Flymo Lawnrake is extremely competitively priced for the marketplace. I found it to be a lightweight but sturdy piece of equipment which was easy to manoeuvre around the lawn and very effective for home use. It is also a great machine for removing moss, weeds and thatch from your lawn.
The lawnrake does its job quickly and efficiently. In fact, I went through my whole lawn within minutes, which is something that could never be achieved using a traditional hand rake, leaving my lawn looking nicer and healthier than it ever did before. It is also easy for everyone in the family to use.
Should You Buy This Model?
The best lawnrakers are able to effectively pull moss and thatch from the ground, which helps your lawn breath again as well as cut the lateral shoots (stolons) of grass. This encourages them to root and create new grass plants which ultimately make your lawn thicker and lusher.
I therefore feel that the Flymo Lawnrake Compact 3400 Electric Lawnrake is well worth the investment. Compared to other models and brands available, it offers a more affordable lawnrake with a better specification compared to the other brands available.
In my opinion it is good to buy from a trusted brand like Flymo because you know you will receive great customer service should anything go wrong with it. Also, it is easy to pick up replacement tines on websites like Amazon whenever required.

FAQs
Does this really lift the moss without damaging the lawn?
In my opinion, the first use always appears the worst as it may appear as if it had damaged your lawn. This is especially if you have concentrated patches of moss, once the rake gets rid of the debris, then it can leave bare patches making it look worse than it is. This can be easily sorted by re-sowing seeds at the start of the season. However, it is for the best and your lawn will soon recover.
I would also recommend that you focus on treating the moss first otherwise you could spread the moss all over the lawn.
What is the difference between a scarifier and rake?
An electric scarifier has blades as opposed to tines which cut deeper into the soil removing compact layer of thatch and moss that starve your lawn of vital nutrients and air.
The rake will scrape the top of the lawn using the tines arranged on a drum removing thatch, moss and debris from the surface of the lawn, however it will not cut as deep as a scarifier.
Is there a warranty?
Yes you are provided with a 12 months manufacturer warranty with the Lawnrake.
Can you replace the tines without having to purchase a new machine?
Yes, you can and it is a fairly easy job to do. I would recommend a quick spray of the tines with oil after each use as they tend to corrode and weaken after lifting the damp moss and thatch.
Please note that spares are supplied in the box. However, I was able to purchase more spares through Amazon or Flymo’s websites.
What is the noise level for this machine?
According to the manufacturer the noise level is 95 dB. In my opinion, the noise level was much lower than that made by petrol lawn rakes.
Can the lawnrake be folded up?
Yes, both the upper and lower part of the handle bars can be loosened and folded down to reduce the amount of storage.
