Summary

Greenworks G40TL Review

The Greenworks G40TL is a 40 volt cordless battery tiller that has a 260mm working width and is compatible with the G-Max 40v range of batteries from Greenworks. This tiller/rotavator will work to a depth of 200mm, weighs 13.3kg and has foldable handles to reduce the amount of storage required.

The range of Greenworks tools is something that I have always backed, and this is largely thanks to their innovation, ease of use and competitive pricing. Where meeting your gardening needs is concerned, you’d struggle to find anything quite as portable, robust and high-performance as this Greenworks G40TL tiller in the battery-operated field.

The Greenworks G40TL is a nifty bit of kit that boasts unrivalled power, performance and a range of features that are enough to make you jump for joy. But is it right for you and your garden? In this review we will take a look at all its features and functions and how well it performs. I will also highlight any downsides to note, so you can be sure you are spending your hard earned cash on the best tool for the job.

It runs on a 40v lithium-ion battery that is part of the G-Max family meaning that you can power share across the entire Greenworks range. What’s more the 26cm cutting width and 20cm cutting depth makes this the ideal companion for turning over the soil effortlessly, where portability and storage space is important.

The Greenworks G40TL is comfortable to use, thanks to the rubberised handle, and easy to operate. There is little doubt in my mind that this is one of the most effective battery-powered tillers on the market at the moment, however let’s see if it lives up to expectations.

Main Features

  • 40V Lithium-ion G-Max battery power
  • Four robust metal blades
  • Height adjustable wheels
  • Easy start
  • Rubber grip handle
  • 26cm cutting width
  • 20cm cutting depth

Power System

Greenworks G40TL Power System

Before I start raving about how great the power system is on this tool – and it really is, it is important to point out that you do not get a battery or charger included with this tiller. This is great if you already have some G-Max batteries as it will save you money to buy the tool without these. However, if you are new to the range, you will need to purchase the charger and batteries separately.

The Greenworks G40TL tiller works with a powerful 40v lithium-ion battery and you have a choice of either 2.0Ah, 4.0Ah or 6Ah and whilst they will all work well, Greenworks do suggest, for best performance, that a 4.0Ah or 6Ah battery is preferable.

It is common for tools to come without battery and charger, particularly when purchasing cordless tillers, so it would be good to know how much this is going to cost on top of the tiller itself. Below is the current price for both the genuine Greenworks battery and charger for the G-MAX 40V range.

Greenworks G40TL Cordless Tiller Video

To give you a visual representation of the Greenworks G40TL cordless tiller, please see the video below (not English).

Blades

Potentially one of the most impressive things about this tiller is the strong blades, that have been laser cut and are made from durable metal, giving you the assurance that they will stand up to even the most challenging ground.

Furthermore, the blades have gone through a special hardening process that adds to their robust nature.

There are four blades in total which give you a 26cm cutting width and a 20cm cutting depth. Each blade penetrates the ground independently for optimal performance.

Remember, this is a portable and relatively lightweight tiller, when compared to a petrol tiller, which is great for portability. The only downside is that due to its lightweight and size, it will take a little longer to penetrate harder surfaces and larger areas. If you are looking for a larger model you may want to take a look at my review of the TACKLIFE Electric Tiller, 1500w that has a larger adjustable 44cm width.

Height Adjustment

The Greenworks G40TL has fully adjustable wheels whose height can be altered easily and quickly. This allows you to use the tiller in a way which is most comfortable for you and makes moving it around far easier.

Performance

Greenworks G40TL Performance

One of the great things about modern battery-operated tools is that many of them are effectively rivalling the power we see in corded or petrol models, but with far more convenience.

This Greenworks G40TL works with an extremely powerful 40V battery, so you can feel confident that it will perform well, but what is even more impressive is that the blades compliment this.

Since each blade will independently penetrate the earth, you are getting a smooth tilling experience that is unlike anything you would have worked with before.

Just remember that this tiller is not designed for big and demanding areas or commercial use, due to its relative lightweight nature and the fact that this is a battery powered tool. I’m not saying that it is limited by the battery power, just the run time will be reduced significantly, if put under too much strain with difficult terrain. This tiller is designed to be portable, so is ideal for allotments or gardens for quickly and effortlessly turning over and rotavating the soil.

Practicalities

There is very little point in using any sort of gardening equipment if it is not easy and practical to use. One of the best features relating to this is the easy start nature. Get going with just the touch of a button – far more convenient than trying to get a petrol tiller going with the added complications of transporting oil and fuel.

Furthermore, the rubber grip handles have been designed for ultimate comfort and offer an anti-vibration design, that makes the tiller so much more comfortable and enjoyable to use compared to some of its competitors.

If you have used bulky tools in the past, you will know how difficult they can be to move, but this one is far superior. This is mainly thanks to how the weight of the Greenworks G40TL tiller is distributed, offering you a smoother and more rewarding experience.

Safety Features

The Greenworks battery-operated tiller comes with a safety switch that is easy to access and will prevent unwanted use.

It is also very quiet during operation. This is one of the main reasons that battery-powered tools are becoming more popular. Unlike their petrol counterparts, that are extremely noisy and could potentially damage the hearing, not to mention disturb the neighbours, these cordless tools are very quiet.

What’s more there are no emissions, so the Greenworks G40TL is far safer for the environment.

Should You Buy This Model?

Greenworks G40TL Conclusion

If you need a cordless tiller then this is by far one of the better models out there. Thanks to the G-Max 40v battery, this tool is ideal for those who cannot access a power source, perhaps when you are working in the allotment or in a larger garden.

Furthermore, if you are concerned about the trip hazard that a corded tiller poses, the battery version is far more preferable – not to mention how convenient it is if you already own a range of Greenworks tools that make use of this G-Max 40v battery.

If you want something portable, well built, powerful and efficient, then this is definitely a model worth considering. The Greenworks G40TL has four strong laser cut blades that are comparable to some of the more expensive models on the market.

If you simply have to have a German garden tool (and somewhat lighter), then you may want to consider the Einhell GE-CR 30 Cordless Tiller.

Conclusion

Greenworks have gone and done it again and given us a powerful, yet convenient piece of equipment that doesn’t lack on features.

The Greenworks G40TL tiller uses a G-Max battery that can be shared across all of their gardening tools. However, it is worth keeping in mind that you don’t get the battery or charger in the box, so you must buy this separately, if you don’t already have one.

With a cutting width of 26cm and depth of 20cm respectively, this is an ideal tiller for domestic use or down at the allotment. Not forgetting how convenient it is thanks to the lack of a power cord.

Overall, I think that this is a great little addition to your garden shed and when I consider the affordable price, it becomes even more attractive.
