As a keen gardener, I’m always on the lookout for tools that can help maintain my lawn in top condition throughout the year. When Hyundai offered me the chance to test their new HYSC210 petrol scarifier, I jumped at the opportunity.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve put the HYSC210 through its paces on my lawn. I’ve used it for both heavy de-thatching in springtime as well as lighter scarifying in summer to remove moss and organic matter build up. I’ve also prepared a video review documenting my experiences using the scarifier so potential buyers can see it in action.
Overall, I was impressed by the HYSC210’s performance. The powerful 212cc engine made light work of tough thatch and moss. I found the adjustable depth settings and swivel handle also offered good ergonomics.
In this written review, I’ll provide a more detailed overview of the HYSC210’s key features and specifications. I’ll also discuss its handling, effectiveness on different lawn conditions, and value for money. By the end, you’ll have a good idea of whether this Hyundai scarifier is the right choice for your lawn care needs.

It was great to finally get my rear 500m² lawn scarified as it was full of moss and thatch. I had already aerated my front lawn using the electric aerator and scarifier from Hyundai (HYSC1550E) and could not wait to see just how well the Hyundai HYSC210 performed in these larger and more demanding conditions.
In this review and video, I take a look at this Hyundai HYSC210 aerator and show you everything you need to know to decide if this tool is the best choice for you and your lawn. I will be covering the following areas in the video review –
- Unboxing & Assembly
- Fuel & Oil
- Why Scarify The Lawn?

Power & Engine System
This model has a reliable and powerful Hyundai 4-stroke 212cc OHV petrol engine. This makes it easy to operate and improves the effectiveness as well as efficiency. The exact engine model is the Hyundai IC210 and I found it started and performed exceptionally well during my product test. As you can see from my video, the engine never seemed to struggle even in the most demanding areas of my lawn. Starting was easy, you simply needed to turn the starter switch to the “ON” position, engage the choke (if starting from cold), ensure the fuel switch is on, ensure the lever is set to disengage (raise the blade) and pull the recoil cord.
During my test, the engine started easily and first time, every time.
In terms of noise levels, I measured the sound level at just over 100 dB, so it is advisable to wear ear protection just as with any other petrol powered tool.
Although I had already purchased engine oil for the Hyundai HYSC210, it was a pleasant surprise to see Hyundai had included 600ml of oil in the box. Any SA 30 or 15w40 4-stroke engine oil will work with this engine.
Hyundai HYSC210 Video Review
Unboxing & Assembly
As you can see from my video, I cut the box on the side and wheeled the Hyundai HYSC210 out as opposed to trying to lift the 44kg tool out the box. Assembly was easy as I hope you can see from my video. If you do need a more detailed demonstration of the assembly process, then Hyundai have created a video that can be seen here – https://youtu.be/2N2kEvCXDeg
I terms of tools, you only require 13mm spanner that is not supplied with the aerator.
Once assembled, it’s simply a case of adding oil and fuel and you are good to go.
The drum on this Hyundai HYSC210 has 18 tough steel blades and that was what I used during my test. These are effective at removing thatch, dead grass, moss and also aerating the soil to allow moisture, light and nutrients to enter for a healthy and happy looking lawn. It did take me a few goes to get the height to the level I wanted, so start higher and work your way down to get it just right.
The great thing about this Hyundai HYSC210 is that it also comes supplied with an additional 24 metal tines scarify attachment, that will allow you to rake/scarify your lawn. This process provides essential ventilation and oxygen to your lawn, so it can adsorb all the necessary nutrients to encourage growth and a healthy lawn.
Changing the drums is relatively easy, you simply have to remove 4 screws to swap them over.
Remember, if you want to change the blades over, you will need to drain the fuel and oil as the Hyundai HYSC210 will need to be turned over for access. Having 2 blades/drums will provide more options and flexibility for your lawn’s requirements.
There is a user-friendly height adjustment dial that allows you to move through the depths according to your lawn condition and your needs. The heights/depths available are from +15mm to -15mm for optimal effectiveness and a perfect finish.
Adjusting the height does take some getting used to. There are no set heights, so it takes a little practice to know how many turns it takes to make the adjustment you need. This is no big deal, as once you have it set, you are good and set for the entire job.
As you can see from my video, at the beginning, I had to stop 3 times to make the height adjustment that suited my requirements. I wanted the blades to scrape the soil below the lawn, without completely digging it up and leaving me with no grass at all. I also wanted to make sure it was deep enough to lift out the thatch and moss whilst leaving the well rooted and healthy grass in place.
Scarifying & Raking Diameter
The effective width is an impressive 40cm. This makes work faster and easier. The engine has sufficient power to do this effortlessly and I never felt the Hyundai HYSC210 petrol aerator was underpowered or struggled.
The fact I had a 40cm working width, and the freedom and power of a petrol powered machine, meant that for my 500m² lawn, this Hyundai HYSC210 made light work of scarifying and aerating my lawn, much faster than I expected.
I would advise that you use a petrol machine if you have a lawn over 200m², as the cord, power and manoeuvrability of an electric model would not be sufficient.
I’m not saying that an electric scarifier does not have its market, for example, the Hyundai HYSC1500E worked amazingly well on my smaller 160m² front lawn.
Collection Box Capacity
The Hyundai HYSC210 has a polyester grass collection bag with a good 45L capacity. This will save time and effort as you work. It has a quick-release mechanism that makes it easy to remove and again reattach when empty. Yes it was a little tricky to attach at first, but once you get the hang of it, then it is fine.
Again, you will see from my video that the collection bag can never be large enough. I ended up removing the collection bag, as it was filling up after a few seconds of scarifying.
Remember, the hard work is the actual scarifying and aerating, as doing this manually would not be practical and take forever to complete (and nowhere near as effective). I ended up raking the debris into piles before disposing in the compost heap. Some people will also use a leaf blower to blow the debris into piles before being removed.
The one time I did use the collection bag, was to go over the lawn in the opposite direction once the debris had been cleared. This just helped to pick up the remaining thatch and moss I had missed and the 45 litre collection bag was more than adequate for this. So it has its use and will be beneficial in some circumstances.
As you would expect from Hyundai, this HYSC210 is an uber-practical garden tool. The engine has decent power which will reduce the effort needed from your side. The handles are ergonomically designed, have a soft grip and are adjustable for comfort. The handles also fold back easily making it compact for easy storage.
The large wheels make it easy to move around even on soft or uneven parts of the lawn. The cutting width, effective blades and large collection bag will make quick work of most larger lawns.
Changing the height is also an effortless process thanks to the handy dial. The transportation lever also makes moving the unit from one area to the next faster and safer.
Just remember that this is a large machine, so just make sure you have the space to store it.
I think any garden tools are practical if they do the job they are designed to do with minimum amount of effort, and I can confirm that this Hyundai HYSC210 does not disappoint.
Hyundai has paid attention to safety features on this Hyundai HYSC210. The operator presence control (OPC) lever will automatically cut the engine if you let go. Additionally, it has a transport lever on the handle that will allow you to raise the blade if you cross a driveway or path. This is convenient and improves safety for the user as well as the machine.
Model Comparison Table

A slightly less expensive option is the Sherpa 2-in-1 Petrol Scarifier STS40-S. This model has a similar sized engine and some comparable features.
The 40cm effective width is also identical to the Hyundai.
The single most important distinction comes down to the brand and engine. Hyundai is a well-established brand and they work hard to ensure their customers are satisfied. Replacement parts are easy to source and readily available, one does not have the same peace of mind with the Sherpa product.

Pros & Cons
In conclusion, I have been highly impressed by the Hyundai HYSC210 scarifier during my testing. It demonstrated powerful and effective performance for tackling thatch and moss removal, with minimal effort required from the user. The build quality feels robust, while the ergonomic handle and adjustable settings provided a comfortable operation. Additionally, fuel consumption was excellent given the heavy-duty 212cc engine.
With its wide 40cm cutting deck and sizable 45L collection bag, the HYSC210 made light work of scarifying large lawn areas quickly and efficiently. Starting was simple, while the adjustable height control allowed customising the scarification level as needed. As an owner of a sizeable lawn myself, I can thoroughly recommend this scarifier for anyone seeking a high-quality tool for regular lawn maintenance tasks. The benefits of scarifying, such as promoting new grass growth and improving water drainage, are well established. In the HYSC210, Hyundai have delivered a professional-standard product at an affordable price.
Should You Buy This Model?
In my opinion, and one shared by the majority of owners, the answer is a resounding yes. It is a reliable and dependable scarifier that is easy to use and highly effective. It is a durable machine that should last you many years and keep your lawn looking at its best, whilst maintaining its health.
