Summary
The Hyundai HYM400P is a petrol lawn mower that has a respectable 79cc Hyundai OHV 4-stroke engine and a 40cm width of cut using a hardened steel blade designed for small to medium sized lawns. It is equipped with a 40 litre quick release cloth grass bag, has 7 cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm, and comes complete with a 3 year warranty. The Hyundai HYM400P has 2-in-1 cutting options including cut & collect, and cut & drop.
This is another reliable and easy to use lawn mower from Hyundai. The company has a reputation for quality products at affordable prices. While light and nifty it has good power from the 79 cc four-stroke overhead valve engine (OHV). This makes it light on petrol and therefore very economical to operate. It is ideal for small to medium lawns and has a 40cm cutting width. The generous 40 L grass collection bag means fewer trips to empty it out and makes for faster cutting. It is quick and easy to release and attach the tough polyester grass collection bag.
The durable polypropylene chassis on the Hyundai HYM400P means rust will not be an issue and Hyundai have kept it ultra light at only 19 kg net / 22 kg gross. The low weight and great design make it easy and comfortable to use. Comfort is further enhanced by the adjustable soft grip handles that fold down, at the mid point, for easy storage.
Another feature that makes this mower more comfortable and convenient is the pull starter that runs towards and is attached to the handles within arms length, meaning you do not have to bend down every time you want to start the mower. Starting is easy and reliable. (After assembly, during the first start you will have to press the primer a few times before the engine starts).
As with other models, Hyundai has used an Operator Presence Control (OPC) lever for added safety. Cutting height is easy to adjust and can be set from 25mm to 75mm depending on your needs. It has a 40cm cutting width.
The Hyundai HYM400P is a fairly basic model but is well made and gets the job done. It is not self-propelled but thanks to the weight and design it is really easy to move around and will get your lawn cut with minimal time and effort.
It comes with the standard Hyundai 3-year warranty.

Hyundai HYM400P Video Review
To give you a visual representation of the Hyundai HYM400P Petrol Lawn mower please watch my video below:
Cutting Diameter and Features
The first thing I noticed about the deck on the HYM400P was the quality, the polypropylene deck is thick and feels like it is going to last. The fact that this deck is not steel helps to keep the weight of this mower to a mere 19kg.
The 40cm deck is not going to suite some with large gardens, but that is not what this mower is designed for. Together with the 79cc Hyundai Euro 5 engine, this deck size will suite lawns up to 190m² in size (about the size of a tennis court).
There is no option to mulch or side discharge with this mower, so the two options available are to “cut and collect” + “cut and drop”.
I would normally recommend a cordless mower for smaller lawns, however this Hyundai HYM400P is so compact and lightweight that it makes it a real option for small to medium sized lawns.
Height Adjustment
You get 6 height adjustments on this mower from 25mm to 75mm and is what you would expect from any petrol mower. The HYM400P model I tested seemed to have 7 height settings, one more than stated in the specifications. There is a single height adjustment lever mounted at the rear of the mower that was very easy to use and adjusts all 4 wheels simultaneously, even raising the mower was a breeze (see my video above).
I have contacted Hyundai to ask why my HYM400P had the additional height setting and larger rear wheels, I will feedback here when I receive their answer.
- 400mm / 16" cutting width: Ideal for small to medium lawns
- 79cc Hyundai 4-stroke petrol engine: Provides easy starting and low fuel consumption
- 6 adjustable cutting heights: Get the perfect finish on your lawn
- 40L grass collector bag: Minimises time spent emptying cuttings
- Lightweight at only 19kg: Easy to push around your garden
- Foldable handles: Compact to transport and store in your shed or garage

Grass Box Capacity
The Hyundai HYM400P has a respectable 40L polyester grass collection bag that was easy to add and remove from the mower. I had no issues with the collection bag falling off the mower as I have experienced with some other brands.
Having an all cloth collection bag ensures the circulation is better, and therefore collection of the cuttings is much improved. All cloth collection bags are more prone to damage over solid boxes, however the material on this mower is good quality. There is no “grass box full” indicator on this collection bag.
Practicalities
What I really like about this Hyundai HYM400P is just how compact and lightweight it is for a petrol mower. Yes, it is not self propelled, but it doesn’t need to be. Remember this mower is ideal for small to medium sized lawns and combined with its easy to start 79cc, Euro 5 engine and its lightweight design make it a pleasure to use whilst providing a great cut.
I hope you could see from my video above how well this mower dealt with the toughest conditions. Yes, you will need to start on a higher setting and then lower it for the final cut on really long or damp grass, but it never felt under powered.
For easy storage, the soft grip handles can be folded forward at the central point helping to reduce storage.
Assembly of the mower was a little tricky, but once I actually read the instructions there was no issues. I did not go into too much detail on the assembly of this HYM400P as Hyundai Power Equipment have already produced a video showing the process. Overall, the assembly will take about 10 minutes, and a cross headed screwdriver is all you will need.
Power System / Engine
The Hyundai HYM400P has a Hyundai 79cc Euro 5 Engine that is easy to start as you can see from my video, and did a good job with the longer grass. This is a 4-stroke OHV petrol engine providing impressive power whilst ensuring low noise levels; running costs are also kept to a minimum.
Standard unleaded petrol and oil are required to start the engine. Please note that the oil is supplied with this mower.
If you are looking for this mower with a more powerful engine and perhaps a slightly larger deck size, please see my comparison table below for alternatives.

Safety Features
The Hyundai HYM400P mower has an Operator Presence Control system to ensure if you let go of the handle the engine will stop running.

- The Hyundai HYM400P 40cm Petrol Lawnmower
- 40 L Polyester Grass Bag
- Oil
- Assembly Tools
- User Manual
Conclusion
This Hyundai mower is such great value for money and makes it a real option over battery or electric mowers for smaller lawns. It is lightweight, compact, well built, easy to start and comes with great after sales care, support and parts here in the UK.
The deck is polypropylene so you will not have issues over time with rust, besides you get a very good 3-year warranty should you have any issues.
Overall, I found this Hyundai HYM400P has the convenience of electric and cordless mowers but with the power of petrol. You get a trouble free, lightweight, compact mower that just gets the job done with no fuss or issues.
If you are looking for this mower with a more powerful engine and perhaps a slightly larger deck size, please see my comparison table above for alternatives.

I had the mower from new and used only 4 times, Ill try to put some fuel stabiliser in.
Thank you
Overall a very good mower , however very difficult to start, takes about 6 pulls.
Hi Paula, thanks for your comments, I didn’t have any difficulties. Make sure that you tilt the mower slightly back when starting, or have it on a higher height setting.
How long have you had the machine? Did you have it from new? Did you put any fuel stabiliser in? (highly recommended)
Thanks
