The Gtech Robot Lawnmower RLM50 is a robotic mower designed for larger lawns up to 625m². It has a cutting width of 18cm, 7 height adjustments from 25mm to 55mm and 3 good quality pivoting razor blades for a precise and clean cut. The Gtech RLM50 has an onboard keypad and LCD display and comes supplied with a charging station, 100m of boundary wire, 120 pegs and 6 spare blades.
The world of robot lawn mowing seems to be opening up more and more and if you have been considering jumping on the bandwagon, then I’d have to say that the Gtech RLM50 Robot Lawnmower is a great place to start. I’ll admit, it isn’t a cheap piece of equipment, but if you’re willing to make an investment, then you will benefit from a wealth of exciting features. What’s more, I’ve seen quite a few handsome offers that allow you to get as much as £200 off, which is nothing to be sniffed at.
The Gtech RLM50 is a nifty robotic mower that is super intelligent. It’ll sense rain and obstacles and will head back to its charger when the battery drains to 30%, meaning it’ll never run out of juice. What’s more, once it has finished charging, it’ll get back out there moving in a different pattern to ensure a consistent and complete cut.
Setting up is beautifully easy thanks to a clear LCD control panel and a clear user interface. Moreover, with three mowing modes and seven cutting heights, you’re getting a great deal of versatility. But don’t assume that this is all that’s on offer, in my Gtech RLM50 review, I’m going to dive into the nitty gritty and help you get better acquainted with this new for 2021 robotic mower from Gtech.

The Gtech RLM50 is an intelligent robotic mower that is perfect for people who want something that will navigate the garden without any hassle. It comes with 100 metres of boundary wire allowing you to initially mark off the boundary areas you want it to cover. If you have more than one patch of grass that needs cutting, the Gtech RLM50 is also able to move across paths between these areas, so you really won’t have to do a thing after setting it up and configuring.
In addition to this, the Gtech RLM50 continually monitors the state of the grass, checking for any changes and watching out for obstacles with its motion detection sensor. Should it encounter anything, it will automatically stop and change direction, making it incredibly safe for gardens where there may be children and pets present. There are other good safety features on this mower, but I’ll go into those in more detail later on.
If you have a hilly garden, this is an excellent option as the Gtech RLM50 has the ability to tackle steeper inclines up to 30%. What’s more, even if this wears it out a little more quickly, it performs regular battery checks and will return to its charging station when the juice runs below 30%. What really impressed me was that the mower will take a new route after every charge. This smart navigation means that no area of the lawn will receive more or less attention giving you a more consistent and comprehensive cut.

Power System
Cutting the lawn continuously bit by bit on a daily basis means that you will be left with a greener and lusher lawn, but this is going to take a lot of power. Fortunately, the Gtech RLM50 has a handsome run time of up to 90 minutes meaning more can be done between charges. Of course, you will need to keep in mind that the type of lawn and its current condition will impact how long the mower will run for, but even at the worst end of the spectrum, you’ll get an hour out of it.
Charging Station
The Gtech RLM50 comes with its own charging station which also comes with ground screws to keep it secure. As I have already mentioned, the mower will take itself back to the charging station any time the charge runs below 30% or if it finishes a program.
Blade
A lot of people worry that a robot mower simply won’t do as good a job at cutting the lawn, but the opposite couldn’t be more true. These powerful mowers often come with impressive blades and the Gtech RLM50 is no exception.
Fitted with durable and sharp carbon steel razor blades, you get an incredible clean cut. What’s even better is that there are six replacement blades included in the box.
It is well known that the blades on robotic mowers will become more blunt over time, and therefore changing the blades needs to be a simple and straightforward process. This is the case with this Gtech robotic mower. What’s more replacement blades, when needed, are cheap and readily available.
Control Panel and Setup
If you’re toying with the idea of using a robotic lawn mower, but are worried about a complicated setup process then you’ll be pleased to hear that the Gtech RLM50 is incredibly user friendly. The boundary wires are easy to set up and come with more than enough pegs to keep them secure. Moreover, using the LCD control panel is quick and easy. All you need to do is choose your mowing mode and let the mower charge. After this, it will head off and get the job done. There is also the option to set a timer so that the Gtech RLM50 doesn’t begin cutting until a pre-programmed time period. This is great to avoid times when the lawn is most used i.e. during the weekend when you are enjoying your BBQ.
One thing that did disappoint me a little, however, was the lack of a smartphone app. A lot of other robotic mowers have this and it can make setting up a whole lot easier, not to mention being able to remotely control the device. Having said that those that do not want to program their mower and simply want it to cut the lawn, then this Gtech is a simpler option.
Mowing Features
If it is versatility you’re after then I’d highly recommend the Gtech RLM50 since it comes with three mowing modes. Before I get into these, I should point out that this mower, same as all robotic mowers, doesn’t come with a grass collection box and relies solely on mulching mode. But that isn’t a bad thing since the grass clippings will be finely chopped and returned to the lawn providing it with essential nutrients and moisture, keeping it looking dense, healthy and weed free.
There is the standard mode in which the mower will move around the lawn in random patterns. Over time, this will result in an even and well maintained lawn. If you prefer to place a focus on one area, you might opt for the zonal mode, which is great if there are problems areas of the lawn. Finally, there is spot mode which allows the mower to start in one place and work radially.
Height Adjustment
As well as having several mowing modes, the versatility of the Gtech RLM50 is extended by a choice of seven cutting heights. These range between 2.5cm and 5.5cm which I personally think is a pretty decent range. What’s even more impressive is how easy it is to change the cutting height. If you have been used to using a fiddly petrol mower then the simple adjustment knob will feel like the stuff of dreams.
Rain Sensor
To avoid water damage, the Gtech RLM50 has a handy rain sensor. When it detects rain, the mower will move back to its charging station and remain there until the bad weather passes.
Rain covers for your robotic mower can be purchased separately, however these are not required. Click here to see my article on the best robotic garage ideas.
Safety Features
A lot of people worry about having a robot mower whizzing around the garden if they have children or pets; it could be dangerous. This is true but since the Gtech RLM50 is packed with safety features, you really don’t need to worry that much.
For starters, it has a lift and tilt sensor. If the robot is moved off the ground, an alarm will sound alerting you to this. Moreover, with a 4 digit PIN, nobody will be able to change the settings and this is also a good anti-theft feature, since if it was taken, they’d never be able to operate it, rendering the whole thing pointless.
The Gtech RLM50 is fitted with motion sensors so if anything crosses its path, it will automatically stop. At times when you need it to cease mowing quickly, there is an emergency stop button.
Accessories
The Gtech RLM50 doesn’t come with any accessories. This is something of a disappointment since other brands such as the WORX robotic mowers can be expanded with the use of accessories. Things like a off limits, GPS tracking and anti collision systems would have been nice to have, but then again simplicity provided by the technology of Gtech is likely to be a more attractive solution for some.
Warranty
Knowing that your device is covered by a lengthy warranty gives you excellent peace of mind. Gtech offers a 2 year warranty and as a company are generally very good at assisting you when things go wrong or support is required.

How do you set the lift alarm.
Hi John
The lift sensor is on by default, so should be working out of the box. Are you having issues with yours?
Thanks
