Summary

The NEXUS NX46SP-18 is a powerful self propelled petrol lawn mower that is fitted with a 140cc Briggs and Stratton engine (500E Series). This mower can be started via a recoil starter, has a single speed sel-propelled drive and has a good sized blade and deck size at 46cm and is designed for medium to large gardens. A large 60 litre grass collection box is supplied and the height of the NEXUS NX46SP-18 can be adjusted to 6 positions from 28mm to 92mm via a central lever.
A lot of petrol mowers are quite cumbersome so if you’re short on space, you may have been put off in the past. But the NEXUS NX46SP-18 is a compact petrol mower with a lot going for it. While you’re only paying just a little over £300 for this lawn mower, you’re getting something that seems far more high end.
Consider the impressive Briggs and Stratton engine, the four mowing modes, the huge grass collection box and the wide range of cutting heights. These are just a few things that got me really excited about the NEXUS NX46SP-18.
In my NEXUS NX46SP-18 review, I’ll be giving you all the details you need to know to determine whether this is the right machine for you and your garden.

Engine
As I touched on earlier, the NEXUS NX46SP-18 comes fitted with a Briggs and Stratton 140cc 500E series engine. If this sounds familiar, it’s probably because it is as this is the same engine featured in the Murray EQ500X. In fact, this is a very similar lawn mower and is actually produced by Murray, just using a different brand name.
One of the great things about this engine is how eco friendly it is compared to many others. B&S have aimed to create an engine with reduced emissions so it’s great if you want a petrol mower but don’t want the nasty fumes and to limit you carbon footprint.
Self Propelled Drive

As with many petrol mowers the NEXUS NX46SP-18 has a self-propelled drive. This helps you if you’ve got a larger lawn or if the ground is sloped or uneven; all you need to do is guide it around.
However, the downside is that the NEXUS NX46SP-18 only has a single speed of 3.6km/h. There are plenty of other mowers out there with variable speed self-propelled drive which allows you to set it to a speed that’s comfortable for you so it’s a shame this one doesn’t have that, when you consider how many other great features are included.
If you don’t need a self-propelled lawn mower then it is worth noting that the NEXUS NX46SP-18 also comes as a 46cm push mower, model number, NEXUS NX46P-18, so you do have options.
Blade And Deck
What I really love about the NEXUS NX46SP-18 is that it has a very durable steel deck. For mowers that will be used on rougher terrain or will see some heavy duty use, this is a must and just gives you the reassurance that it isn’t going to break at the first sign of a challenge.
The NEXUS NX46SP-18 has a 46cm (18 inch) cutting width making it suitable for medium to larger sized lawns. It will perform well on lawns up to 1000 square metres but any larger than this and I’d recommend going for something bigger. That said, if you have a smaller garden and feel that the NEXUS NX46SP-18 will be too big, there is a smaller 41cm version of this mower, model number NEXUS NX42SP.
Handles
One of the major selling points of the NEXUS NX46SP-18 is the adjustable handles. If you have ever tried to mow with a machine whose handles are too tall or too short, you will know how uncomfortable it is.
With a choice of three height settings, you can enjoy your mowing experience rather than coming out of it with a bad back.
Moreover, this NEXUS NX46SP-18 lawn mower has a folding handle making it more compact so storing it between uses is a breeze.
Height Adjustment

Cutting your lawn shouldn’t be a task and having a choice of cutting heights means that you can tackle it regardless of the conditions. It’s great news then that the NEXUS NX46SP-18 comes with a choice of six cutting heights. These range between 28mm and 92mm. On the higher end of the scale, 92mm is considerably higher than many similar mowers which is a nice touch. It is a shame however that the 28mm is not going to be low enough for those who like a shorter closer cut.
Mowing Features
The NEXUS NX46SP-18 is nothing if not versatile. You have a choice of four ways to mow; cut and collect, rear discharge, side discharge and mulching.
If you choose to go with the traditional cut and collect option, then you will benefit from a massive 60 litre grass bag. No more unnecessary trips to the compost bin. It’s a fabric grass bag so you get excellent air circulation meaning that the clippings are more compact, so you have to empty even less!
There’s a mulching plug included which allows you to remove the grass bag and send the clippings back to the lawn. This acts as an organic fertiliser and is perfect for improving the health of your grass.
The rear and side discharge chutes give you the option to deposit the clippings either to the side of the mower or behind it as you mow, making for easier clean up when you’re done. These options work particularly well with longer grass.
Practicalities

The NEXUS NX46SP-18 is a lightweight piece of equipment weighing just 28kg. That sounds like a lot but for a petrol lawn mower, it’s very respectable. If you’ve struggled to move a mower around in the past but want to stay with petrol, it’s well worth considering, especially when you couple the lightweight design with the self-propelled drive.
The NEXUS NX46SP-18 is also incredibly easy to start thanks to the ever popular and reliable Briggs & Stratton engine, so there won’t be any messing around to get started. Plus, you get a two year warranty for improved peace of mind. That said, with the components that are included and the high quality, I wouldn’t have too many concerns about things going wrong.

NEXUS NX46SP-18 Pros and Cons
Should You Buy This Model?

Do I think the NEXUS NX46SP-18 is a worthwhile piece of equipment? Absolutely! I cannot reiterate enough what great value for money this machine is. If you are looking for a well-performing but affordable petrol lawn mower that will do everything but put on a rendition of Les Mis then I’d highly recommend this one.
The NEXUS NX46SP-18 is a perfect choice for larger gardens, although if yours is much bigger than 1000m² then the deck size might be a little too small.
This truly is an all singing, all dancing lawn mower that leaves nothing to be desired. So, I would suggest this for people who want a comprehensive tool that allows them to maintain their garden with as little hassle as possible.
Conclusion
Looking at the NEXUS NX46SP-18, I have to say that I have been very impressed. While it might look like any other petrol lawn mower (and it is very similar the EQ500X by Murray) it has almost every feature you would expect from a higher-end petrol mower for a fraction of the cost.
I’m not messing about when I say that this could become a firm favourite for a lot of homeowners. Yes, I’ll admit, there are a few downsides like the lack of variable speed, but this certainly wouldn’t be enough to put me off and I don’t think it should you either.
