What Is The Best Lawn Mower?

What Is The Best Lawn MowerThere are many lawn mowers currently on the market and choosing the best one for you and your lawn will depend on the power and deck size you want/need for the size of your lawn and the mowing features you prefer. Your mowing schedule will also determine the best type of mower, meaning how often you cut your grass and any other functions needed that will make the mowing sessions faster and more enjoyable. There are many aspects to achieving a perfectly manicured lawn, and the lawn mower you choose is an important element to accomplishing this.

I know that the question of “which type of lawn mower is best” gets asked, however the simple answer is that it depends on so many different factors as well as your budget. So, to help you out I have written a free guide to purchasing the best lawn mower. If you don’t have time to read my comprehensive guide I have designed a tool that will pick your perfect mower in seconds, see the link below. Simply select the mowing features, size of your lawn and any additional functions before the best mower/s are presented.

You will then be able to purchase this mower, or if you need more information simply click on the full review button, that will provide my comprehensive reviews and further information about each mower.

What Is The Best Type Of Lawn Mower?

In summary, I have included some pointers to help you further. In terms of power, some people like the power and reliability of a petrol mower, however, don’t forget about the annual maintenance that will be required.

What Is The Best Type Of Lawn MowerOther homeowners prefer electric lawn mowers, they come as standard corded models that are reasonably priced to purchase, easy to start but naturally you will be restricted by the cord. The popularity of cordless battery mowers is increasing drastically especially in the last 2 years due to the advancement of lithium-ion battery technology. You may be surprised to learn that many cordless mowers now rival petrol mowers, whilst still providing the freedom of movement, but without the need to purchase and store fuel/oil and the necessary annual maintenance. If you would like to learn more about how cordless mowers compare to their petrol counterparts, please see my article – Petrol vs Cordless Lawn Mower – Which Is Best?

Cordless mowers are not cheap to purchase especially if you are purchasing one with long lasting (high Amp Hour) runtime, but the great news is that many of them are able to power-share the batteries from other tools from the same manufacturer.

We must not forget to mention that some people still like the simplicity and lightweight features of manual push mowers. They have certainly advanced massively since the old manual push mowers your grandparents used to have, but also another advantage is that hardly any maintenance is required.

Last but certainly not least, let’s not forget the option of owning a robotic mower. They are an ideal investment for people who do not want to mow the lawn themselves but enjoy having a beautifully manicured lawn at all times. Some may think that having a robotic mower requires a degree in science, but this could not be further from the truth. Once the mower is set up, the perimeter wire installed, the mower is ready to go. You can conveniently control the mower from your mobile phone or iPad, should you want to change the mowing time and cutting heights. This can even be done when you are on holiday. They are certainly not cheap to purchase and will require an annual maintenance, but when you consider the time they save, and time is money, it may suddenly become a viable option for many.

What Is The Number 1 Lawn Mower?

What Is The Number 1 Lawn MowerMany people ask “what is the best lawn mower to purchase?” Again, this depends on your requirements and budget. For example, if you have chosen that a petrol mower is the way to go, consider what other features you require. Do you want a self-propelled mower that will remove the physical effort from mowing? Petrol mowers can be heavy, so in my opinion, a self-propelled feature is definitely worth considering. What about variable speed? Once you have a mower with this feature you will not want to have anything else. The variable speed can be adjusted up or down to ensure the mower matches your walking pace, and again can be reduced further when mowing up or down a hill, for increased balance and safety.

What about considering a hose wash port for easy cleaning of the underside of the deck and blade to prolong the life of your mower? Again, this is not an essential feature, but definitely convenient especially on petrol mowers, where you are not able to turn the mower upside down to see what you are doing.

Do you prefer to cut and collect the grass cuttings, or do you want to enjoy all the other mowing features such as mulching, side and rear discharge? Again, consider the benefits of mulching, as in my opinion it is well worthy to promote the health and condition of your lawn, whilst reducing weeds and disease.

This list could go on, but I think you fully understand what I am trying to put across. In summary, simply consider all the options you want and will utilise, as there is no point paying extra for fancy features you will never use. As you can see there is no simple answer to the question “what is the number 1 lawn mower” as it is down to your situation, personal preferences and budget.

But don’t worry, to make life easy, simply use my easy-to-use mower selection tool above to pick the best mower for you and your lawn.

Are Cheap Mowers Any Good?

People have different specifications when looking to purchase a new lawn mower. Some want the flexibility of features or power; others focus on premium or budget brands.

I am not going to pretend that you don’t get what you pay for, when it comes to purchasing a lawn mower. However, having said that there are some really good quality and effective budget mowers available on the market today.

If you are looking for a cheap and best budget lawn mower, below I have included my top selection for each type of mower.

Before making a decision, of course petrol and cordless budget mowers are going to cost more, compared to electric or push budget mowers. Robotic mowers are not cheap but there are some budget models available too.

Ensure that your budget mower has the features and function you require. You may be surprised to learn that some budget mowers provide features such as mulching, rear discharge or even a rear roller for that beautiful striped lawn appearance. Yes it is true that the build and material quality may not match up to the more expensive and premium brands, however, if you maintain a regular lawn care maintenance schedule and are not going to be cutting grass that is knee high in length, then a budget model may well be the way to go.

Which Is The Most Reliable Lawn Mower?

There are many reliable mowers currently available on the UK market. In general, the premium brands and models are more reliable and have a better build quality. Mowers that are built in Europe and the UK are of a higher build quality and will tend to last longer, if maintained, compared to those built in China. This was more so the case several years ago, however, some of the brands such as WORX and Hyundai, for example, will compete favourably with those built closer to home.

Sales and customer satisfaction is most certainly on the increase for lawn mowers that are manufactured in China. I personally use both a WORX Cordless lawn mower and a robotic mower and must say that I am very impressed with the long-term quality and reliability of these products.

How to Choose a Good Mower?

How to Choose a Good MowerConsider what features and functions you need your mower to have, but mainly what you will use on a regular basis. Consider the power type of your mower and the size of your lawn, as purchasing a heavy petrol mower for a small garden will not be suitable. The wider the cutting width or width of the blade, the more grass will be cut on a single pass, therefore getting the job done quicker. If you have small areas in your garden or have many curved edges, then perhaps a smaller blade will be more suitable.

Consider what storage you have available. Most mowers have folding handles and grass collection boxes, but only some offer a vertical storage, saving up to 70% of your valuable space.

Having a rear roller is also another very popular feature as many people want to create that beautifully manicured striped lawn appearance. Just remember that to create long lasting stripes the mower needs to be on the heavier side.

It is also worth considering what support the brand offers, and if spare parts are readily available. Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to purchase a new replacement blade for your mower. Warranty is also important as for example some manufacturers will not cover the batteries as long as the warranty of the mower itself. On the other hand, some manufacturers provide a generous 5-year warranty, but will require product registration.

How Much Do I Need To Pay For a Good Lawn Mower?

Again, this will depend on the type of mower you are purchasing. Manual push mowers and electric mowers are considerably cheaper compared to cordless, petrol or robotic mowers.

In general terms, good petrol mowers will cost around £300 to £400 depending on the size, good cordless mowers will set you back around £350. To purchase a good robotic mower for a medium sized garden you will need to pay around £700, good push and electric mowers are the cheapest option that will set you back as little as £80 to £100.

Before purchasing a mower, use my best mower selection tool based on your specific requirements and then read my comprehensive reviews, that will provide all the pros and cons together with other things you should consider.

What Size Cutting Width Do I Need On My Mower?

The size of the blade has a direct correlation to the size of your lawn. The bigger the lawn you have the larger the size of the blade / deck will need to be to cut more grass on a single pass, therefore getting the job done quicker. Just remember even if you have a larger lawn but have narrow strips of grass, make sure that the mower is not wider than the narrowest point you want to cut. This will prevent you from having to get the trimmer out to finish the job.

If storage is at a premium, you may want to consider a mower with a smaller deck. Some models even provide the option of vertical storage, that will save even more valuable space.

Large lawn1000m² to 1500m²45cm to 53cm

Conclusion

How to Choose a Good Mower ConclusionRemember that the best lawn mower for one person may not be the best mower for another. Consider the size of your lawn, the power type of your new mower, what features and functions you need and will utilise.

You may purchase a perfect mower, but that mower will only be as good long-term if it is looked after and well maintained. This is the same as with any other power tool to prolong its life and ensure it functions reliably, efficiently and effectively. Many people forget about the blade. It is important that the blade is in good condition and sharp to provide a clean cut. Blades can easily be sharpened or replaced, by anyone with a few basic tools and knowledge.

Use the mower selection tool above to select the perfect mower for you and your garden based on your specific requirements. You can then directly purchase the mower or if you need more information, click on the full review I have written about each one.

  1. Hello Mark, interesting to read all the information you have provided. I am looking for an electric mower for my lawns, approx 300Msq, rear lawn is up some steps. The HyundaiHYM3800E,Mountfield Princess38 and Flymo speed-mo 36 all get good reviews and seem similar. Which would be your choice Many Thanks
    Chris

    1. Hi Chris, thanks for the positive feedback.

The Flymo may be a little small for your 300msq lawn, but is great value for money.

Personally I would go for the Mountfield 38 and possibly even consider the larger 42 model due to the build quality, it is only 1 kg heavier than the 38 so will not be a problem lifting up the steps. Also you get a rear roller and the option to mulch. The grass box is a little fiddly to put together but if you persevere is then it is very sturdy. It does cost little more than the Flymo and Hyundai, but if cost is not an issue then this would be my choice for your circumstances. Link to my full review below –

      Hope this helps
